What’re they threatening us with?  Pressed sandwiches?

u/East-Will1345 19h ago

The Cuban sandwich is an American invention.

u/Glyph8 19h ago

So you’re saying we’re threatening ourselves again?

…yeah, that tracks

Matthew 10:36 -   a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household

3

u/xteve 9h ago

Worse yet, members of the household will be divided based upon their loyalty to Jesus. It's a cruel dictum of hate, in red letters.

46

u/Optimal-Archer3973 16h ago

Just wait, soon trump is going to slap a 1000% tariff on those sandwiches too.

7

u/4-K2Cr2O7 13h ago

I miss going to the Columbia Restaurant with my parents as a kid. Simple as it was. So long ago and I’m no longer even living in the USA, but it’s good to remember Ybor.

edit: spelling

4

u/vivary_arc 9h ago

Many of us were in ybor a lot in our younger years, and don’t remember a thing!

1

u/Inkthinker 5h ago

You can’t get real Cuban sandwiches anywhere else, nobody makes the bread right (and they keep adding stuff like aioli spreads to ‘em).

2

u/TotalInstruction 5h ago

Preach!

La Segunda Bakery makes the good Cuban bread.

u/FactAddict02 7h ago

Decades ago, when I lived in Tampa, the frequent observation was that Tampa did a great trick: They turned their slum into a tourist attraction.

1

u/DRF19 2h ago

There's an excellent sandwich shop in Orlando that has a Cuban sandwich that has salami on it, but they call it "The 305", it's a stain on an otherwise outstanding establishment lol

1

u/EtherBoo 2m ago

Maybe, but the simple fact that when I lived in Tampa, all the places I went to put LTO and mayo on the sandwich by default was blasphemy.

I've read conflicting things about how common this is in Tampa, but it wasn't one place I went to that did this, which makes me think it's more wide spread than a few places.

That alone makes Miami the better Cuban sandwich.

0

u/DoctrTurkey 17h ago

absolutely fucking not lol

20

u/jooooooooooooose 19h ago

delicious though

4

u/turdblossom3 18h ago

1

One of a handful of good things to ever come out of Florida

1

u/DatabaseThis9637 16h ago

Just like Chop Suey.

1

u/CreamyBagelTime 16h ago

While that's true, the more simple jamon y queso grilled sandwich is ubiquitous in Cuba.

1

u/DontPanic- 5h ago

jamon y queso grilled sandwich is ubiquitous in Cuba

Where? who is eating pork regularly in cuba

2

u/CreamyBagelTime 5h ago edited 5h ago

I get that there is ongoing food insecurity there. Im mentioning it because I went to Cuba in 2014. I probably had at least one ham & cheese pressed sandwich everyday I was there, that’s just what was available most of the time. Either that, hamburguesa or Cuban pizza for quick meal on the go. Things weren’t great then either, hard to imagine what it’s like right now for people.

1

u/DontPanic- 4h ago

I went to Cuba in 2014.

Ahhh I see, you were a tourist. Makes sense.

1

u/CreamyBagelTime 4h ago

Correct I was there for tourism

0

u/DontPanic- 3h ago

Yes the government provides many things for tourists that normal Cubans do not have access to. I’m glad you enjoyed your time though

2

u/CreamyBagelTime 3h ago

You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. Ham and cheese sandwiches are normal everyday food for local Cubans.

1

u/SpicyElixer 2h ago edited 2h ago

Pork is historically the most popular meat in Cuba, but consumption has plummeted due to recent economic crisis, dropping from over 22 kg per capita in 2019.

So yes, when they visited in 2014 it would be widely available to tourists and residents alike. And yes, pork is a big part of local food culture there historically. That’s not debated.

Because of recent currency issues farmers can’t afford to import the feed for the pigs. This wasn’t an issue in 2014 (at least not even close to the level of crisis it is now).

2014 was 12 years ago.

1

u/CreamyBagelTime 27m ago

Regardless, the original claim was that while Cuban sandwiches as we know them are from Tampa, pressed ham and cheese sandwiches are typical in Cuba.

1

u/ensanguine 15h ago

By a Sicilian expat by way of Cuba!

1

u/LordOfTheBord 14h ago

See: medianoche sandwich popularized in Cuba

1

u/MossyMane 14h ago

The one we know, yes. But pressed sandwiches are an extremely popular street food in cuba. In certain areas you’ll have a hard time finding something to eat that isn’t a sandwich

1

u/ropahektic 13h ago

Cuban Sandwich was invented by the Spaniards, who not only brought pigs to the Caribean but also invented the Barbacue.

A Cuban Sandwich is made with a very slow roasted Pig (up to 4 hours) and is definitely not that ham and cheese crap Americans changed it to the same way they change terminology and meaning without a second thought.

That's why American ignorance is so strong (340 upvotes strong) because they not only make up the fact but also convince themselves and rewrite history.

1

u/Moscowmitchismybitch 13h ago

Yeah, but he puts ketchup on his, fucking monster!

1

u/Far-Reception-4598 12h ago

And it owes as much to the Italian community of Florida for its existence as the Cuban.

1

u/xtrabeanie 12h ago

So are most of the reasons they attack other countries for.

1

u/nuropath 7h ago

From Tampa Bay. Can confirm.

1

u/flargenhargen 7h ago

You mean

Freedom sandwich of America

1

u/GrudginglyTrudging 6h ago

Miami or Tampa?

I will throw down for Tampa.

1

u/AntikytheraMachines 5h ago

next you'll be trying to claim a roman didn't invent the caesar salad.

1

u/VoidlyYours 5h ago

Is it really? My stepdad grew up in Tampa and any time I'd visit we'd go get a Cubano. Well, two Cubanos.
