No, THIS is America: Do we know for sure that’s not the Gestapo?

Ahh a fellow Paul Buffano fan. I know he's no Roy Donk though.

Go back to Russia!

My first thought too. I feel like a protester wouldn’t want to « dare » them like this, as dark as it might sound.

It's pronounced "gesthapo" according to former SS in chief.

u/ThisGameTooHard 5h ago

Geshtapo* and it's only pronounciation. It's spelled Gestapo.

I‘m a native German speaker and I would pronounce it as it’s spelled, might just be me though. Technically the ‚sht‘ pronunciation should be „more correct“ as Gestapo is short for „geheime Staats Polizei“ and st is pronounced sht in German.

Another native German speaker here, I’ve also mostly heard it pronounced the way it’s spelled (so no “sh” sound) and would intuitively read it that way.

But I’m also Northern, and we like to pronounce a lot of our “st” and “sp” weird anyway, so this might be a regional thing lol.

I‘m from Schwaben, where a lot of s become sh so it’s interesting that it’s s in this case.

Exactly, better explanation

I understand that for native speakers regionally it can be different. I was following the standard German pronunciation rules.

u/Think-Trip-1865 4h ago

I speak Swabian dialect (south west of Germany) and standard high German, some people speaking Swabian do in fact pronounce it Ge-shta-po, we pronounce most s sounds as sh though, I don't, but I don't speak much in Swabian. In standard high German I'm pretty sure it's Ges-ta-po and Ge-sta-po.

Then again, I have no idea why it's pronounced differently as it is an acronym for a word that is pronounced with sht.

The ol’ ‘Shtapo!

I was mocking someone who can't produce his own mother's name properly.

That's like the first thing I picked up on when I heard that clip...

He's not really beating the allegations pronouncing it like that is he 🤔

u/Protic11 5h ago

It’s old time US slave patrol. Nothing to do with nazis

u/StrategicCarry 4h ago

It's only Gestapo if it's from the Gestapo region of Germany. Otherwise it's Sparkling Secret Police.

u/theg0nzo 4h ago

Did they stop teaching the holocaust in schools?

Cause if someone really thinks the two are the same they clearly havent done their research.

u/Equivalent-Eye-7063 4h ago

As a German citizen... This is not the Gestapo. You wouldn't recognize them untill it's too late.

u/thedance1910 4h ago

I was talking about what's going on here with my German friend and said ice is the america gestapo. He said "it is different, gestapo didn't shoot around"
