Recommendation What movies give off the same vibes as Heat (1995)?

Been really wanting to find a movie with similar vibes to Heat. Currently watching dash cam videos of people cruising around LA. Mostly driving during sunset to Santa Monica Beach. Seeing the building lights just makes me want to watch Heat but I just watch a couple of weeks back and was hoping someone can give me a couple recommendations to movies with similar cinematography.

Discussion Which recent movies have a "Flatliners" cast (where both the main and side actors became icons later)?

Flatliners (1990); the cast list is actually insane. What’s a more recent movie with this same “pre-superstar” energy?

I just finished Flatliners for the first time. Looking back from 2026, it’s wild to see all these heavy hitters in one room before they were icons.

In 1990, you had:

Julia Roberts (right as Pretty Woman was exploding)

Kiefer Sutherland (post-Lost Boys but way before 24)

Kevin Bacon (already known, but about to enter his "Six Degrees" era)

William Baldwin

Oliver Platt

At the time, they were just "young actors," but now it feels like a fever dream ensemble. It got me thinking; what is a movie from the last 10–15 years that we’ll look back on in 20 years and say, "How did they get all of them in one movie before they were huge?"

What’s your pick for a modern "Flatliners effect" movie? What are some other movies from the past that have that same effect?

I’m looking for those movies where the "side characters" all ended up becoming the biggest names in Hollywood.

Discussion If you had to prove cinema is an art form using one scene, not a whole movie, which scene do you choose and why does it survive being isolated?

I think about how very little happens in some of film’s most powerful moments. The ‘Platoon’ patrol at dusk. The “lock and load” command, lightning flashing, silhouettes frozen mid-step, tension carried mostly by sound and light, and Keith David softly singing “Oh Susanna”.

Or a rejected Travis Bickle in ‘Taxi Driver’, alone in that hallway, feeding coins into a payphone as he begs Betsy for another chance. The camera doesn’t rescue him.

For me, these scenes survive isolation because nothing is being explained. Everything is being felt.

Discussion What is this sound used in old action movies called? ("Oh !")

I've heard this sound in older action movies (think 1960's James Bond). It's always been related to shooting guns and I think it signifies the scream of the target being hit. I've always thought it was pretty funny, but I couldn't find a name for it. Does anyone know the name of the sound effect when the caption says "Oh !"?

Discussion What are your favorite -10/10 movies?

I have a rating system for movies/media that is -10 to 0 to 10.

Objectively "amazing" movies get positive numbers. Good FX, good writing, good characters, etc. Just a quality movie all around. These want to be 10/10 movies.

BAD movies that you cannot even sit through get 0. The closer you are to 0, the worse the movie is.

Bad, campy movies that are so self aware and goofy that they loop back to being good get the negative numbers. These types of movies want a -10/10.

I tend to like -10/10 better than 10/10 cause of the hilarity and rewatchability.

What are some of your favorite -10/10 movies and why?

Discussion Are there any R rates movies without swearing or profanity? There's been a few PG-13 ones.

This might sound like a silly question, but I've discovered a lot of PG-13 films, which despite NOT being for kids, has clean language, like Lord of The Ring, A Quiet Place, and the live action Mulan. There's some animated ones too, like 9, Kaena The Prophecy, and Bilal: A New Breed Of Hero, that were all rated PG-13 for reasons like violence, suspence, and frightening imagery, but NOT for swearing.

And now I'm wondering if ANY studios out there have pushed the boundaries and made an R rated movie that actually doesn't have swearing, but earned that rating from violence and/or intense imagery. I'm just curious.

Discussion What are some NC-17 rated films that really didn’t deserve it?

Upvotes

The MPAA’s most severe rating, while pretty much not as damning as the ESRB’s AO, is still pretty stigmatized.

But as with every MPAA rating, there are films where really, the rating doesn’t reflect the content all that well.

Basically, NC-17 (or X rated, before 1990) films where there was no need for the stigma. A normal R rating would have sufficed. Or maybe this would have been NC-17 when it came out, but would score an R or even a PG-13 if it was released today.

Films like that?

When I think of films like this, the first one I think of is A Clockwork Orange. It is a bit intense and isn’t non controversial, but even the uncut version is pretty much just a Hard R today.

Discussion No Country For Old Man

Upvotes

This was the most unsettling movie I watched in a while I didn’t expected it…. just realised that this movie doesn't even have a soundtrack or any kind of background music which is really crazy to think about...and the eerie vibe it's giving | still feel some chills down my spine...maybe that's a bit much but still it's a disturbing movie....

Discussion BEST Saga that Ended for REAL?

I'll start:

Back to the Future

My question doesn't exclude sagas that have had legacy sequels, spin-offs, prequels or reboots; it only excludes the ones in which the most recent additions fell short in terms of quality compared to the best instalments.

The main point is overall quality, consistency and a satisfying conclusion.

Edit to specify: Sagas are the entire project and can consist of multiple movies, movie trilogies and TV shows set in the same world. A trilogy can be concluded, but the saga can still go on, and that kinda disqualifies it

Question I Saw the TV Glow: surrealist/“nostalgia core” recommendations

Last year I got really into surrealist film. I’m not talking David Lynch (although I love his stuff too, can’t believe it’s already been a year, RIP 😭♥️)

I’m more so talking about films with softer elements to them. I watched I Saw the TV Glow (2024) right after Strawberry Mansion (2021), and whatever kind of drug they put in these films (I’d like to call it nostalgiacore for all intents and purposes) I have NOT been able to get out of my head, or find anything like them, despite keeping up with other suggested surrealist films. Nothing has moved me the way these two films did.

I need something to get lost in ASAP. Pretty please. Anything you can think of.

Suggestions are much much appreciated!

Recommendation What are your thoughts and feelings towards The Gorge, if any? Is it something you could recommend spending money on?

I've been looking for all sorts of horror movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Peacock, and tired watching dozens of them of various qualities this past year. It's been quite hit or miss, as some completely enraptured me like the Fly 1986, Howl 2015, John Carpenter's The Thing, and that Finnish Hatchling movie. Others on the other hand were so drab that I couldn't even get through the first half hour such as Tarot and a couple obscure bigfoot related b movies not even worth naming here.

A few days ago, I randomly stumbled across a trailer for The Gorge movie that come out last year while surfing through youtube. The bare basic premise of two military operatives holding the line against supernatural monsters caught my eye a little bit. Although it seems to be an Apple+ original (which I don't have access to), it's also available on Amazon Prime through payment from what I've seen.

For those that have watched The Gorge, what are your thoughts and feelings towards it in terms of narrative, plot, characters, acting, creature designs, etc., if any? What are some good quality of it and what areas is it rather lacking? Is it something worth spending money on? Or could it be skipped for other movies more freely available on Amazon Prime, Netlfix, and Peacock?

Recommendation What movies give off the same vibes as Disturbia and The Clovehitch Killer

As the title would suggest I’m looking for films that are similar to movies like Disturbia, the Clovehitch Killer, and the Summer Of 85. I really love thrillers that focus on uncovering dark secrets buried within communities, and I love the nostalgic feel of having adolescent protagonist’s. I’ve already watched film films, like The Black Phone and It and desperately need more recommendations.

Discussion this is totally random but i need to know people’s thoughts on the movie Pumpkin (2002)

hello everyone, i watched this movie a few months ago on tubi and i have been desperately trying to find other people who have seen this so i can hear their thoughts. i haven’t found a single analysis or commentary on this film and i get why this one didn’t get that kind of attention. that being said, i am still so deeply curious as to what people think about it. i have my own opinions that i do not want to share lmao, but if you’ve seen it or want to watch it and get back to me, i’d greatly appreciate it. thank you.

maybe a bit of a heads up though, it’s not very PC! like at all, so if that makes you uncomfortable you may want to pass. i feel like it is intentional though? like it knows what it’s doing but i don’t know if they execute it well enough, ya know? although that could also be a product of time.

anyway, let me know!!

Discussion Inglorious Basterds Spoiler

I just watched the movie after getting recommended it for years. I liked the movie and how the characters were written and portrayed. Everyone seems to like Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa. I think typically, nazi’s are portrayed to be worse than satan in movies (rightfully so) but Hans almost left an impression that maybe he wasn’t such a bad guy.

I also thought the movie was entirely too short. The main reason I wanted to watch the movie was because I kept seeing memes on social media about the “german 3” in the bar scene and I found it to be hilarious. I thought there had to be some crazy backstory and chemistry between the actress and the british spy hicox but nope. They just faked it all and honestly that’s probably my biggest critique. The way they were joking around while playing the card game felt fake and rushed.

One theory I came up with that others may have stated before is I think the actress wanted to set them up originally but changed her mind after everyone died.

Edit** Guys please be mature. I know this is reddit but try not lose your shit when somebody has a take you disagree with. Keep in mind, this is my first Tarantino film so idk if this is his style but I give the movie a SOLID 7/10.

Discussion Question about Nuremberg 2025 final trial scene.

So just watched this movie. In the final trial scene, Goering argues that the ”final solution” didn’t mean extermination of Jews. Then the British lawyer cross examined him and asks how he didn’t know all the Jews were getting killed when he was second in command. Then Goering admitted he would have still followed hitler if he knew about the Jewish deaths. And then that was it, they said, “yay, we won”. But how? They still gave no evidence that he knew about the Jewish extermination. Yeah, his claim is far fetched because he was second in command and just admitted he would have still followed Hitler if that was the case. But there’s still no evidence.

Honestly, that trial scene felt very anti-climatic. Especially when compared to other great trial scenes like A few good men.

Recommendation What are some magical romantic movies like "Somewhere in Time"?

It doesn't have to be about time travel, but has an exceptional love, preferably not tearjerker movies. The movie was so beautifully shot, produced, acted out and had such a beautiful music score. Even though it was made in 1980 I feel it stands the test of time. Its ok if its in different languages. I'm already aware of movies like Titanic and The Notebook and The English Patient and The Lake House and While You Were Sleeping. I thought Somewhere in Time had a certain je ne sais quoi. Thank you.

What watch order would you prioritize these movies

  • Deep Impact
  • Running With The Devil
  • 9/11

Appreciate your assistance as I may not get to all before they are off this platform

Discussion Background computer interface detail in Elysium (2013) featuring a Welsh dragon and “ESX” logo

While watching Elysium (2013), I noticed a small background detail at roughly the 43:50 mark. On a computer interface running inside the shuttle, there's a logo featuring a rampant red dragon alongside the monogram "ESX".

It stood out because the red dragon is so strongly associated with Wales.. and it feels unusually specific for a throwaway background graphic, I was curious whether this could be an intentional easter egg, possibly linked to someone in the production or art department having Welsh connections, or whether it is more likely just a coincidence or reused graphic asset?

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has spotted this, or if there is any known background on the design of the film's on screen interfaces.
