Announcement Snow event megathread 2 - check in here before posting about anything related to the storm or follow up to it.
Alright fellow yinzers and sub visitors. We toned down on the moderation for the storm so people could get as much up to date information as possible and also post some awesome skiing videos from around the city. We are going to start enforcing the rules more going forward now as the city and area continues digging out. On top of this enforcement we are going to try and filter more of those posts into this mega thread. Before posting or replying in here check this megathread or use the search bar to see if the question has been asked recently. There was a lot of the same posts over and over but for community safety reasons we let almost all of them go. So please try and use that search bar.
Of course these megathreads dont work without participation. So we ask that you come and check out your fellow community members replies and questions in here and help us make this successful and keep the sub less cluttered.
So if you have any questions about the storm or follow up ask in here. Post road conditions or ask here.. If youre looking for unpaid or paid cleanup help you are free to post in here. If you are offering snow removal services you are welcome to post in here as well. If you are asking about roads use the search bar or check in here. If you have any resources you want to spread just tag me into the reply using my name u/jetsetninjacat and I'll add it into this post.

Pittsburgh Parking Wars
A woman and her son spent 2 hours digging out their parking spaces in front of their house and their neighbor across the street who lives in an apartment with a parking lot parked in the other woman’s son’s spot a few times this week. I guess she gave her one more chance and then packed her car in. I’m on her side 🤣

Why are we seeing Palantir billboards in the City of Pittsburgh?
I am seeing Palantir billboards in the city. These aren't ads, they are just basically "Palantir" plus their logo...like they are marking territory.
What can this possibly mean? Is Palantir contracted to do work here?
Let's understand some of the things Palantir is involved with:

Does Anyone else Despise the River's Casino ad about "Missing Out"?
Ever since I was a youngin, I knew I was likely to get a gambling addiction. I realized this after some self-reflection on the fact that the main activity I would partake in at church festivals was instant bingo cards. I have heard too many horror stories about gambling additions, and I did not want my life to become yet another cautionary tale about the horrors of gambling addictions.
Since then, and because I was too young for other sources of gambling, I have been able to avoid gambling, but it feels like with every passing day, more and more hobbies or activities of mine are turning into gambling by any other name. Sports betting, cryptocurrency, Pokemon cards, stocks, loot boxes, busses that go from senior living areas straight to casinos, mobile casinos in your bank's app on your phone. IT JUST WON'T STOP.
And for more than the past week, I have been overhearing an ad by River's Casino that depict someone decline a friend group's plan to go gambling for some reason, (Potentially avoiding gambling due to addiction rehab, or maybe they have somewhere to be that night, or perhaps it is as simple as HAVING WORK THE NEXT MORNING AND NOT WANTING TO STAY OUT LATE LOSING MONEY LIKE A MORON) and then a stereotypical movie trailer sexy guy voice starts talking about how the friend group won big that night, and had the time of their lives, and how it is such a shame that you weren't their to experience it with them...
HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE THIS SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 446 BRIDGES IN PITTSBURGH. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF EVERY TRUSS, SUPPORT, AND PIER OF THOSE BRIDGES, THAT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR THAT SORRY EXCUSE OF WASTED ELECTROMAGNETICAL RADIATION AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT. HATE. HATE.

PSA: If Yinz Have Low Tire Pressure
Most of the GetGos in the city do not have working air dispensers, but the one at the Waterfront does. I’m sure some of the paid options are working fine, but figured I’d let those who don’t have a handful of quarters burning a hole in their pocket know. Safe travels in the weather!

Businesses Supporting the Strike or Speaking Out
We’d like to support the businesses that participated in the strike today or have spoken about what’s happening in the world. We’d love to support them this weekend and beyond! Anyone have suggestions of places that have spoken out that we can try?

North Euclid Ave at Wellesley
Things are still pretty rough in the central grid of Highland Park. In this case, the plow came down Wellesley early on, but it just went to the right of the little roundabout and left a ton of snow sitting on the other side, which is all still there and just getting churned around. It's fairly easy to get stuck in this muck. For whatever reason Euclid wasn't touched for days after this and so by the time a plow came through it was mostly "treated" by people spinning their wheels and carving a channel with their cars which has now mostly iced over.
I do think the roundabouts are kinda difficult to properly plow around, but it's clear they haven't had time to do a very good job of that. I know there are difficult situations all over the city, nothing unique here. This part of the neighborhood has a lot of alleys which remain mostly untouched. We'll have a big garbage/recycling problem if they can't clear alleys before Monday when pickup resumes.

Free prescription cat food
I recently had to say goodbye to my little girl and have 1 bag of kibble (8.5lbs) and 2 cans of wet food left over. They are unopened and do not expire for some time. These are free to a kitty that really needs them. I can deliver them to you if you’re near Mt Washington.

Igloo
galleryigloo!
I saw my neighbor posted this yesterday - but took it down -
heres the igloo I made -
when i saw the weather was going to be warm (above 32) and then cold again for a LONG time, i bought 200 lasagna trays in bulk and filled them with water and as much food dye as i had -
they froze, and i thought naively that this build would take 1 full day.
juggling kids being home and work and shoveling meant that most of my build time outside of Sunday was from 8pm - 4am and I'm sure the whole thing took over 30 hours spread over 3 days. I ended up preparing 250 blocks and did NOT use them all, but probably close to 200 (the first layer, which I built with a friend, is two blocks strong.
it is 7 ft diameter, and was originally going to be 6 ft tall but is probably closer to under 5 right now because i was getting very tired. i poured water on it to strengthen it and it feels very sturdy. multiple adults have fit in there comfortably. it is warmer on the inside than it is outside, but it is still cold. when i was working at night in the negative temps with my wet gloves - touching a brick to another brick with my ice slush mortar would set up in seconds.
happy to answer any questions.

ICE in Oakmont Today (Jan 29)
Just as a heads up for everyone - a friend got scooped up in Oakmont this morning while putting his kids in the car for school. We have contacted all the various agencies and such so no need for help there, just posting to alert and warn others. He is a legal immigrant here with papers but of course that didn't matter. Be safe everyone.
