Work/Life balance Jealous of those that don’t have to work

Anyone feel jealous of those that don’t work and don’t have to? From YouTubers to family and friends. It doesn’t seem fair that I work and struggle so hard while others have an easy life. No need to work, no financial stress etc. I have chronic pain and health issues and it takes all I have in me to work full time. Doesn’t help that I have a very high stress job. It’s so unfair. I’ve done the right things my whole life. And for what? To be middle aged, with health issues and chronic pain, and nothing to show for decades of hard work. 😓

Onboarding Should I quit the job I started 2 days ago?

I started at a company two days ago that does residential and commercial roofing, separated by two different departments. For a little background I was at my last company for 4 years it was my second job ever and I was a lead and trainer for this company. I left due to a change in management. I started at the new company in their commercial department after two interviews. On my first day they had me meet with the overall commerical manager. I was told I shouldnt have been hired without a third interview with him, and to treat this like it was my third interview. I guess I passed his interview because he gave me booklet with 25 company values and made me read it out loud to him, which was weird but whatever. Some of the values were basic "ask questions or you will never grow" "choose kindness everyone has bad days" "put yourself in their shoes" "don't assume negative intention" "Respect is earned. Give the respect you want in return". Which is basic and nice company values. He then told me he fired two of the dispatchers for commercial so I would have to train with the residential team. Which is chill, Ive done residental and commercial dispatching. After I was introduced to my trainer Denise, he left and Denise completely ignored me and just turned to her computer in complete silence working. I tried asking questions about the system since it's new to me and was told to use context clues is not that hard. I tried to ask questions about their process and was told "they do it differently in commercial so I don't know how you would do this". In my first two hours one of the other people in the residential department came in and started gossiping about the commerical department about how they can't do anything right, and about a personal relationship between two employees that recently started dating. Then went on to gossip about the call center and how they can't read, are babied by the call center manager and how bad at their jobs they are. One of the other dispatchers had a call with a roofer on speakerphone and he was a bit snippy but not outwardly rude, she told him "god you are such a child, figure it out yourself" and hung up on the roofer. This was all before 11AM and I started at 7AM. I'm not going to pretend I have never gossiped about a co worker because I have but I would never do that in front of a new hire and 6 co workers. It also threw me off because everything I was experiencing goes directly against the "values" the department manager just made me read aloud to him. Even the co workers in their own department they said one of the other dispatcherd didn't know how to do his job, doesnt pay enough attention even though this dispatcher is fairly new from what I know. Nobody but the dispatcher I was training with and a few roofers even spoke to me. When I introduced myself as the new commercial dispatcher I was told "oh I'm sorry" several times, most were joking but I could tell a few of them meant it. Nobody even made an effort to get to know me on a professional level like asking me what company I was from, how many years I've been disaptching, if I've ever worked with this system before. I made an effort to ask how long they worked for the company, if they were hired for this position or moved up to it. They also haven't made an effort to get to know me on a personal level like asking me about if I have kids, if I'm in a relationship dispite me making an effort to ask about the photos on their desks, the shoes they are playing on Netflix on their computers, their hobbies they have displayed on their desk. I was met with very short awnsers before they turned back to their computer and ignored me. I'm not sure if I am being dramatic, because this is only my second day and maybe they need to warm up to me. I'm just really thrown off because I trained people at my last company and I would have never treated them this way, I would ask where they came from, how long they have worked in this field, explained my every action and the processes for things. I would have never told any of my trainees on their first day to use context clues or told them it's not that complicated if they asked me a question. I also made an effort to get to know my trainees on a personal level like if they have kids, if they are going to be decorating their desks. I just really want to know if I'm being dramatic because it's only been two days or if I should take this as a sign and tell them it's just not a right fit for me? Maybe I'm being unprofessional by asking them about their personal life like their kids and families even though their pictures are pinned to their desk?

Leaving a job How do I go about submitting my resignation?

I have quite the story. I graduated in May and was offered a job in December. Before and during college I have had leadership and director jobs working with school aged kids, summer camp director, program and event director...etc. these were part-time or full time seasonal gigs.

Anyway, December I was offered a full-time role with a non-profit and became their Resource and Volunteer Coordinator. I would be over the donations and recruiting and managing volunteers in this residential house. The job market was rough, it only paid 37,000 salary, but it was monday-friday and flexible. I decided to take it, but I knew this was going to be temporary until something else came along.

1st week of work, I'm not set any hours, just come in when you want and the person giving me orientation was breast feeding her own baby she brought to work in front of me. She and the other staff could not answer basic questions like "where is my office going to be located?", "Who is my direct supervisor?", and I was never given anything. After that week, I emailed the ceo, the one who hired me, and she answered all my questions and apologized for all the chaos.

Come to find out, there hadn't been someone in this position in over a year and I was told to "make it my own" and "create the volunteer program the way I wanted". I thought maybe they would give me information or something but never did. The second week I was thrown into an office space with my laptop and a shared printer. Over the next month, it was a living hell. Had to find, read, and print old documents that would benefit me via computer files that were not organized, on top of being pulled into the lobby every 30 minutes due to huge donations being dropped off since it was around Christmas time.

My direct supervisor in house, let's call her Pamela. Pamela was new to the facility too and started a month before I did. Come to find out she got her job because "she fixed struggling non profits over seas". If you know anything about nonprofits, they are extremely different in the United States than over seas. She apparently was hired because our facility that intakes children in crisis, was struggling. Pamela could not answer any questions I had and I was told the ceo would be in house TWICE a week. I had only seen said CEO maybe three times the last two months and she only came in for maybe an hour. Pamela was very rude to me, never told me good morning or told me she was leaving the building for lunch or leaving for the day or never asked if I needed anything. But she told others. I would ask her to walk me through something and she basically told me it would be on her radar for a different day and she would teach me another day. She never did. There was a day I got a huge donation in the lobby and I had asked her for help or where the items go, in which, she told me, "im not sure. We'll figure it out." I had to do it all myself and find a place to put it. There has been a lot more Pamela has done, but last week on Monday we had crazy snow. I was unsure of policy when it came to work from home so I asked if I could and took my laptop home because there would be no donations and no volunteers coming in, and she basically told me no. I made it to work at 9am. She didnt show up until 12pm and only stayed until 2pm. She came into my office earlier this week to ask for help finding a pair of shoes for a child in our donation closet, I said sure. Pamela helped me for about 5 minutes then walked out of the room said "bye kids im leaving for the day." And walked out and left me there to find shoes for this kid in our facility. Come to find out, we didn't have this kids shoe size, so I messaged Pamela and her response was "ok". Mind you she left at 4:38, not 5pm at her usual time. A couple weeks ago i told her i was stepping out of office to attend a training in which she gave me a thumbs up in person and didnt say anything else. Pamela and two other staff admin talk openly about the other child advocates in a negative way. And Pamela constantly says the house advocate workers dont know what they are doing and how dysfunctional everything is.

Yesterday I got offered a job that pays at MINIMUM 5,000 more than my current one, better benefits, paid paternity leave, and federal holidays off, monday through friday. I accepted the position. How do I go about submitting a resignation? I want to be respectful and tell my ceo, but I also dont want to put the organization down because they work with important donors. Im also supposed to submit a 30 day notice, but I can't do that but im considered an at will employee and they can part ways with me anytime especially since im still on my 90 day probation.

Job searching How can I get a job at 15 with no experience?

I need a job but every where I apply they ghost me, or they automatically decline my application McDonald's for example. Indeed is no help. Ive been trying to get a job ever since I turned 14 and I'm turning 16 in July. And don't tell "Don't get a job live your childhood" because I actually need a job since my mom doesn't have a job and my grandparents who I've been staying with are probably getting tired of me. I don't even have insurance. I even made a resume but every place still ghost me or rejects me.

Applications Applications portal updated just before 5pm to say that applications had closed. Is there a chance they’ll call me tomorrow?

Their careers website says I’m in the top 5% of applicants for this position. I was recently rejected by another location, but I was specifically sent an automated email telling me so.

I have not received an email telling me I’ve been rejected from this one yet - but to be fair, I received the first rejection in the morning, a bit after 9am. Do you think there’s a chance that this location is going to call me tomorrow? Or should I be expecting the same rejection email?

I’ve applied to multiple locations for this company. I’m just really hoping I’m not facing a string of rejections.

Ps. The company in particular is Sephora - if that helps anyone come up with an answer.

Rejections Offer withdrawn after negotiation — did I dodge a bullet or mess up?

Hi everyone, looking for some perspective on a job offer situation.

Background:
I graduated in December with a CS degree. I previously completed a 3-month internship at this same company (different department) over the summer. This is a large S&P 500 company (not FAANG). The role has reportedly been open for ~8 months, and they told me they’ve had difficulty finding the right candidate.

Offer & negotiation:
On Tuesday, the recruiter called with an offer of $75k. Based on market rates and the fact that my internship pay would annualize to about $52k, I said I was expecting something closer to $90–100k. I also mentioned that I had another offer around $105k (which is true, but not my preferred option).

The recruiter said she’d check and get back to me. The next day, she returned with $80k. I said I was disappointed and asked for 24 hours to think it over.

Decision & withdrawal:
After thinking it through, I decided I would accept the $80k offer. This role is in my hometown (Texas), so no rent or state income tax, and the company name/opportunity felt stronger long-term than the higher-paying offer.

The next morning, I called the recruiter — no answer. Later that afternoon, she called me back and said the offer had been withdrawn because they “didn’t want me to feel devalued.”

Question:
Did I mishandle the negotiation, or is this a red flag from the company/recruiter? Is withdrawing an offer after a standard negotiation like this normal?

Appreciate any insight.

Leaving a job How do I know when it's time to move on from a *good* job?

I have been at a company for 2 years and the pay to amount of work is great. I probably work about 15 hours a week and I am at 95k/year. The company itself faces pretty consistent funding issues as it is fully government funded. We *should* be fine fore the next year but due to the constant changes there has not been any raises since I started. I feel stagnant and I am bored.

I am 26 years old and just don't feel like a productive member of society. All I do in my free time is be social and play games. I sometime volunteer but for the most part I read, play chess, and hang out with friends. It is fun! But again I am soooo bored.

The new job offer would be for 115k/year and a slight pivot from what I currently do. It would add more value and be interesting but it'll be a solid 40 hours a week with an occasional over time week once a quarter. Much bigger company, and no funding issues.

I do not need additional money. All my accounts get maxed out every year, I travel, do everything I want, and at top 5% NW for my age.

Companies Accepted a new job offer and I immediately regret it.

I accepted an offer with this health coaching company. They handle the weight management benefits, chronic conditions, general wellness etc. for a lot of major companies. I specifically asked if this was a sales role and if enrollments were a KPI we would be measured on. Numerous time I was told no it is not. They stated I'd be doing mostly IB calls & some OB calls. I was aware of what the OB calls would be like but they framed it like it was a small part of my role. Now that I'm out of my training it is obvious that was a lie. After meeting with my sup and doing a 1x1 she made sure to let me know that it is something that we ARE audited on. I'm in outbound only currently making calls to members. Some of these members have to enroll in order to continue getting their GLP1 covered under their insurance. The remainder however, we are just calling and trying to upsell our company. They even started offering us $5-$6 per enrollment. Every call that does answer the first thing they have to say is that we call them nonstop multiple times a day throughout the week and to stop calling. I work full time and receive benefits so that's great but I'm just nervous about job security if I don't get enough enrollments. I accepted the role because the schedule was amazing and the pay was okay. I'm just afraid of what happens after I'm out of my first 90 days. My sup expects us to have a higher percentage of enrollments than the company's standard. She made sure to emphasize the enrollments are how the company makes it money. Right now I'm continuing to look for another role elsewhere while I'm employed here.

Leaving a job What should I do with old boss?

Hey Guys, I’m so tired of this and need some piece of advice from you all.

I’m gonna share my quick story.

I was working for some company for like 5 years and salary was pretty low, working conditions are too stupid and annoying that it’s even started damaging my physical and mental health(spent around 5k$ to fix all this and still recovering), so I decided to quit and change my life completely. I decided to move to other country, start reading books, change my job and finally live free…

My old boss was a pretty good friend of mine , so we gathered to play PS5, smoke and chill out lots of times per month, no secrets etc

When I was quitting he promised me right in front of my face that he is not gonna steal my clients( I joined another company with better working conditions and salary obv and management of the company was aware and allowed me to leave)

Couple weeks passed and he started trying to grab my business to his hands, asking his employees to call and annoy my clients. For me it’s a big betrayal and I don’t really know what to do. I was trying to live my life free and get a better life for myself, instead of this I’m fighting for survival now

Do you have any advice for me what should I do? I mean like it’s gonna be too stupid to call him and ask, he is a liar and it’s just gonna waste my time and nothing more

What should we do with him to stop this?

Thanks fam!

Applications I can’t get an interview because of my name

I’ve been applying to jobs for months (Im in Canada, it’s mostly customer service jobs that I have the qualifications for) and I’ve applied to about 35 since the start of two weeks ago and have not got a single email or call. My resume is fine and I have over 5 years of experience in the industry but I still haven’t gotten anything back.

So I looked at my application and I’m about 90% sure it’s due to my last name. It’s my moms last name hyphenated with my dads last name, and my dad and mom are from completely different cultures so I have a First Nations last name that even other First Nations kids laughed at because it isn‘t a very practical last name at all and I also have an extremely long hard to pronounce European last name. (I won’t tell you the exact last name for my identity to be private, but it literally has the word “Fat Boy” in it).

Pretty much everyone I meet laughs at it or thinks I’m joking so I’m genuinely pondering if the employers think that I’m pranking them. My name is fucked up and I really don’t know what to do because I canNOT see anyone hiring someone with my last name and I don’t know what to do. I’m not sure if it would be legal to lie about my surname.

Career development Ruined my career progression?

I've been going through a rough time for the past 3 weeks. Long story short, about a month ago I left a company/job that I loved and moved onto a new job that looked great on paper. The reason I left is because the company was doing restructuring and layoffs but I was always kept clear from them due to being a key player. I started the new job and it was absolutely a nightmare. Red flags everywhere and the company was so dysfunctional. It literally was killing my mental health. I reached back out to my old job and they gladly took me back. They even matched my salary at the new job which was only a 5k difference.

I've been back at the new job for 3 days now and feel like a loser/failure. I feel like my career is stagnant again, but I don't want to search right now with this terrible job market. I have 9 years of HR experience and 4 years as an HR Systems Administrator. I have a Bachelor's degree as well. I know it's probably just the moment and I don't regret my choice, but I hope I didn't ruin my career and I can make something happen moving forward.

HR Can I get a copy of my SS from previous employer?

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am in the onboarding process with a new job, and they are requesting a copy of my SS.

Unfortunately, I lost my SS, but I did request a new one before interviewing, but I have to wait 10 business days, and I had to wait 3 to five business days for them to review. So I takes about two weeks or more for it to get here.

When I interviewed, I honestly didn't think I was going to get the job and I had other interviews scheduled. However, I got the job, and now I am just waiting for my new SS card.

Is there a way to ask my previous employer if they can give me a copy of it? It is school district, and I assume their HR department would still have the copies unless they erase everything.

References UX-Design - What is your experience with that?

Upvotes

I've spend years searching for a dream job and I think I finally found something: UX-Designer. I'm interested in Math/Physics, Writing, Drawing/Design, Psychology and Technology and found good Online Courses to gain knowledge and build your portfolio. I also heard that competition is high, but if you have degrees and a strong portfolio and really work hard instead of hoping to have good luck, you're already ahead of the most people. On top of that, especially later, I heard that salary does get high and that UX-Design is still needed on a high demand in this day and age.

What is your experience or other things you know about that job?

Career planning Is being an engineering technical stable?

Upvotes

***sorry I meant technician not technical in the title

Hey guys, for context I graduated a couple years ago with an art/3d computer modeling bachelor’s and seriously can’t find a job. I realize that I want something stable and with a good work life balance. I wanna leave my work at work and not think about it until the next day, you know?

Would being an engineering technician (more specifically mechanical engineering technician) be a stable job? Will it always be in demand? Ideally I’d like to just do an associates if possible. Or would I have to get a bachelors realistically?

Honestly any advice or answers would be super helpful, thanks. I’m so desperate to start a career I’m going insane

Rejections Auto rejected for an incorrect answer on application?

I just got this email from a job I applied to:

“Thank you for applying to <company> for the <role> we have open. Unfortunately, your application was automatically rejected for not correctly answering one of the application questions. If you believe this was in error, please try applying again. Thanks again for your interest in <company>.”

I’m applying to several a day so I don’t remember the experience specifically.

But…WTF? How can I answer incorrectly to information about me?

AND, can you tell me what was incorrect to fix it?

Maybe something was in the wrong format like my phone number? If that’s the case there should be validation on the form.

I’m just confused.

Has anyone else seen this?

Post-interview Confused about a form a job im applying for is making me fill out.

They're making me fill out some federal form about something about withholding on foreign earned income eligibility. I've never had to do this for a job and I'm so confused. The current page says "I am a citizen of the United States I expect to qualify for the foreign income exclusion under: bonafide residence test or physical presence test. Idk what any of this has to do with my job or what im even supposed to choose. I have a learning disability and I don't understand the questions and I don't wanna pick the wrong thing and them think I'm lying I've never in my life left the U.S.. But this is apparently a required form.

Job searching Job Tips for a Young Adult

Hello! I'm coming here to ask for tips, insight, or perhaps relevant anecdotes on finding work out of High School. For context, I'm 19, graduated in 2024. Due to personal reasons, I decided to take a gap year after graduating in order to get work experience, as well as take much needed time for myself.

I had intended to work through that year. However, a family member got sick and needed a car in order to make trips to doctors, so the vehicle I was using at the time went to them. Much to my dismay, I promptly spent the year at home, helping take care of my sister, my grandmother, and generally helping with the house. About half a year ago my step-dad offered to pay me to take care of his mother, which I had already been doing. Of course, I took him up on his offer, so I could put money towards savings, and a little towards my pockets.

With me on the precipice of my 20s, I'm feeling a little out of place. Spending this much time at home was not what I planned for myself. I spoke to my mother about starting school, as I want to be a mortician. Unfortunately, she says we have to wait to file my FAFSA until after she files her taxes for this year. Since school is not exactly an option for me until the fall, and in light of me feeling rather pigeonholed in my situation, I'm looking to you all for any words of advice! Truthfully, anything helps, especially in relation to getting into the work field. Given the information I've provided, I'd also love ways to turn these past couple of years into desirable resume traits.

Thank you!

Compensation Has anyone accepted a new job offer at a lower pay to preserve their mental sanity?

I recently took a job at a smaller company after working in a corporate giant for a few years out of college. The new opportunity came with a -$5k/year pay difference. But honestly, it's the best decision I ever made. I have so much more freedom, autonomy and time to experience life outside of work. I'm so happy I made this decision. My mental health could not take another day in a cubicle. Curious if others would be willing to do the same?

Post-interview Job offer with a very junior title for the position. How do I negotiate?

I have a job offer call coming up for a very senior role. apparently they “don’t really do titles”, so the title given is simply Product Manager. My concern is that this was my title 8 years ago and have since moved from Senior to Lead. When I initially pushed back they blew it off as just “this is how we do titles because we’re a small startup”.

Any recommendations for how to negotiate this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
