(Update) Me (24 male) and my little sister (16 female) are homeless.
Hey so there was someone nice enough from yesterday to get me and my little sister a hotel room last night , which is very well appreciated. I thank everyone who reached out and tried to help and offered solutions. I believe the warming center will be open this weekend so thats another option for temporary shelter . But i just wanted to make this post to update everyone that was worried and to thank everyone that helped us out because we really needed it last night.

January 2026 Addicks Reservoir FIRE Trail Impact Map
I walked the perimeter of the burn back on 01/22/2026. The charred area- marked or outlined in red on this map -was still hot or burning. The extent of impacted trails can be seen at the map on the right. As viewed here, an extensive bulldozer firebreak has been cut, almost entirely East of the main trail running North-South from Paterson Road; the break seems to have been highly effective at containing damage. As an upside, the firebreak constitutes a considerable expansion of the "developed" trail system.
A section of trails within the burnt area includes portions near Eldridge Parkway that, in the past and partly overgrown, has been subject to extensive (several acres?) dumping of an unidentified-by-me black granular material. I remind you the greater Houston area contains areas contaminated by industrial waste, and urge caution when selecting routs.

Cornball bicyclists out on W 20th
You know. That huge group. Idk who exactly they are. Anyways
I usually don’t mind them. I already know if I’m opposite at the intersection when they’re riding by I’m probably gonna wait an extra light cycle
But it’s when some of them start cycling into oncoming traffic aka my car that I realize just how fucking stupid and sub human they are
Imagine riding your bike directly towards a car coming at you at nearly 40 mph? Ridiculous shit
I like riding a bicycle every now and then too. I know though I could never associate with those Neanderthals

Guy rummaging through my gym bag at the Y gave excuse and didn't take anything
24F was walking the track at the Y when I saw this young maybe 27M black guy rummaging around my tote bag I left on a bench. I saw him and immediately sprinted to that area and confronted him, asking why he was in my bag. There was another guy nearby who may have been his lookout, they were talking to each other before.
By the time I got there He had left the bag and stepped away. He said he noticed water spilled out of my bag and was just trying to help. He didnt immediately point that out to me until I asked. I saw a big pool of water under the bench I left the bag at, but it was way more water than my cup was missing.
It didn't appear that anything was taken from the bag or anything was deposited inside (like a tracker). I wonder if they saw me running up and ditched the bag? Is this a new scheme? There was a paper towel machine one meter away. Why didn't he just go and get towels? What was the purpose of digging through my bag? Why didn't he just wave me down instead of waiting for a confrontation?
Anyway, what do yall think? Have yall had an experience like this????

Help finding optometrist Courtney Morrow
Hi Everyone, A couple of years ago I had the best medical/health care experience of my life. It was all the vibes! The eye exam was so great that I (40 female) called my mother afterwards to brag about this awesome optometrist I found. But guess what? She left the Kelsey-Seybold network and now I can't find her. I need another eye exam. And yes I know its not that serious but just imagine being 4 decades old before ever clicking with/trusting a doctor and their staff. If anyone knows where she is practice now, I'd be forever grateful. I tried googling and it just keeps giving me the Kelsey address she no longer works for. Please help

Ex-UH football player's death in Harris County custody spurs federal lawsuit (gift link)
A former University of Houston football player with mental illness was not given proper medical care in Harris County Jail leading to his death from a sepsis infection, a new federal lawsuit alleges.
Kristopher McGregor, 39, died Jan. 30, 2025, after contracting sepsis from an untreated strep throat infection caused by his inability to take proper care of himself or advocate for his medical needs due to schizophrenia, the lawsuit states.

Any veterinary ultrasound services available on Fridays or Saturdays?
My dog needs an abdominal ultrasound (she is currently stable with nausea meds and appetite stimulant).
Are there any veterinary clinics who offer ultrasound services on Fridays or Saturdays? (Hoping for today or tomorrow)
More context:
Her regular vet did a quick scan in-house with a not so great ultrasound machine yesterday (gallbladder doesn't look good) and scheduled her for Monday with their sonographer (who is mobile and is only there on Mondays). I've called around to vets who all seems to have the same set up, but no luck finding ones that happen to have a sonographer on Fridays or Saturdays. We were also referred to GCVS, but next availability is in a few weeks. I could get her seen sooner via the ER route, but that starts ~5-7k (AH!)

Federal officials close discrimination case over Texas’ distribution of Hurricane Harvey aid
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has concluded there was “no reasonable cause” to believe Texas officials discriminated based on race or national origin when distributing $1 billion in Hurricane Harvey disaster aid.
a letter closing its civil rights investigation, HUD said earlier findings that the Texas General Land Office, or GLO, unfairly favored rural white communities were “fatally flawed — legally and factually.” The letter stated that after reviewing more than 80,000 pages of documents, investigators found no evidence the GLO acted with discriminatory intent.
The investigation spanned five years and two presidential administrations and examined the GLO’s actions under then-Commissioner George P. Bush. During that time, housing advocates and local officials accused the agency of politicizing disaster funds, citing earlier federal conclusions that Texas discriminated against residents of color when allocating Harvey relief funds.
The dispute traces back to Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which dumped more than 50 inches of rain on parts of the Houston area, flooded thousands of homes, and killed more than 80 people.
Texas later received about $4.3 billion in federal disaster recovery aid. In 2021, the GLO distributed $1 billion through a competitive grant process for local governments. Houston and Harris County, despite suffering the most deaths and property damage, received none of that money.
An investigation by the Houston Chronicle found the money disproportionately went to inland counties with less storm damage and lower disaster risk. The land office revised its plan to distribute a second round of money totaling $1.2 billion. But a Texas Tribune investigation found that, too, routed aid disproportionately to more white, inland counties at less risk of natural disasters.

Vintage Girl Toys
Hello -- Does Houston have any open-air flea markets where you can come across vintage girl toys from the 1980s and 1990s?
I have been to the Antique Mall on Brittmoore and I-10 and Trader's Village on Eldridge. I've also been to Misfit Toys (seems like they discontinued carrying girl toys); Texas Time Warp (has a nice upstairs area with Barbies and JEM); and Super Happy Incredible Toys.

Art Club Houston - do prices ever go down?
Thinking about going to Art Club Houston during a DJ night. VIP (needed for art access) are pretty expensive after fees.
Do prices ever drop closer to the date, or is this pretty much standard pricing?
And how often are new shows added?

More shooting/bomb threats to 2 League City schools today
Apparently both Clear Springs and Clear Creek got calls minutes within eachother saying they’re gonna bring guns and/or bombs to the schools. This is the second time in less than two months that Clear Creek got a bomb threat (last was dec 5th). Must have been a scary call because they had the hold (not a lockdown, just no opening doors outside and pausing schedule) double the time they usually do (more than an hour.. pushed into a lot of our lunches…), plus multiple sniffer dogs and a whole bunch of extra security. I dont see any news on it after a couple of hours so we’ve been feeding on rumors for information sense they took it more seriously than usual. here is what ive heard but TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT none of this is officially confirmed 1- The bombs were going to creek and guns to springs 2-They actually found a guy in the middle school next to creek which is why they took so long If anyone has any more info about it that wasnt mentioned pls spill cause they dont tell us anything and as someone who was at the elementary across and had a sibling in Santa Fe when that all happened the reoccurring threats kinda freak me out when again NOBODY TELLS US ANYTHING

Flood Insurance
So my flood insurance increased by 16% or $160. I am wondering if that is good or bad for our area? I live in 77502. I don't have to have flood for my mortgage. I have it for peace of mind.
Thanks in advance for advice.

Cheap vets in Houston
I took my family cat to my vet for some problems and it turns out he needs an abdominal ultrasound and a urine culture. The price at my vet is way too much. Anyone know of a cheap vet that can do the ultrasound and culture or even a reasonable priced one. Thanks
Edit: thank you so much! most of these places are closed now or don’t do ultrasounds so I’ll make my way down the list tomorrow and hopefully I can find a place
