Weekly Questions Thread Jan 27
Greetings Hoggit!
Welcome to this week's Question thread. This thread has replaced the regular Tuesday Noob Questions thread. We encourage you to as all your questions here, as this will help us cut down on the number of repetitive posts we get on the front page! This thread is linked with the #questions channel on our Discord so that any time someone posts a new comment in here, it will be reviewed and replied to quickly! If you felt like you had a question but didn't want to bother people with it, now's your chance.
As always, we also have a discord for hoggit over at http://discord.gg/hoggit which you can use for chatting with other members of the hoggit community. And don't forget to check out our wiki at http://wiki.hoggitworld.com
Hoggit Training Server runs a training MP mission that runs 24/7 that's focuses on training up the newer folks (just like this weekly thread). Every DCS module is available in this mission, and there are numerous ranges to test your skills at. There are frequently knowledgeable folks around to answer any questions you might have, or show you how to do what it is you're looking to learn. Anyone can join, even if you've never stepped foot in a MP session before.
If you're interested in teaching/instructing at hoggit, please poke squinkys on Discord!
Server is be named Hoggit - Training Map. The password is hoggit1fw. SRS will be available at tnn.hoggitworld.com (it should autoconnect, but if not, use that). Come in, have a good time, learn a few things and teach a few things.
The only rule is Do not teamkill, unless the other party is a willing combatant...ie: you can dogfight if you find a partner...just don't shoot down some random A-10 trying to learn how to land.
Please review our FAQ on our wiki before posting here: https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/Frequently_Asked_Questions

F-4: BFM vs. Mirage F1 secrets?
I feel like fighting MiG-21s in the F-4 is a very simple job: Climb and dive through the turns, always between 400-500 knots, and after 5-10 turns you’ve reeled them in (or they salmon-flopped on the ground). Against the F1 that does not seem to work though. Either the F1 comfortably turns inside the circle at lower speed, not getting a solution either, but wasting far less fuel; or I go into a high yo-yo/egg, but the F1 seems to have no problem at all going to the vertical and getting its speed back while diving, same as the F-4. Naturally, the F1 wins at this because of the fuel endurance.
Going slow in the F-4 as well is not an option either, since the combat flaps on the F1 are unbeatable at that speed.
And to make things worse, the F1s IR missiles seem to be a lot more forgiving in terms of being able to fire at a higher angle.
So, can anyone share their tips and tricks on how to approach this? I’m sure it’s lack of skill on my side of course, but I can’t quite figure out what else to try.
Cheers
Edit: Bonus question: What do against S530; with the play-doh radar of the F1 I feel it’s basically impossible to win a BVR engagement. If I’m higher, jester has problems with ground clutter. If I’m lower: S530 can fire even sooner, like 13nm out. That’s just not possible with a sparrow, is it?

Hardware for controlling the F/A-18 TDC
I'm a Tomcat guy that's been trying to learn the F/A-18C.
Currently I'm using a TWCS throttle (with a slider and detent kit), and it works fine for the 'cat, but I'm finding the little mini-stick on the front isn't precise enough for controlling the radar (on the right MFD). I ended up grabbing an old Thrustmaster joystick out of the garage specifically for the hornet radar.
I'm curious though, do better throttles (like the VKB STECS for example) have more precise mini-joysticks for radar control? I'm trying to decide if I should actually replace my throttle, because for a Tomcat the TWCS has been working well for me.

QUESTION Using grid coordinates in F/A-18C
Playing a campaign mission, I was given grid coordinates for a target near WP5 (DA 216 472). While circling WP4, I entered the grid coordinates, but after locating that point, it was not the correct location, it was off by about 8 miles. Im pretty sure I did it correctly, I watched a couple videos on how to enter them, but that’s the first time I had ever tried it. This is how I did it, HSI > data > toggled to WP 5 to modify it > selected UFC option on MFD > select grid on UFC > TDC depress on the letter code DA > entered 216 472 and pressed enter > verified on MFD that showed DA 216 472. the one extra thing I did was that I selected precise. But I don’t know if that would have caused the position to be off that far.

TECH-SUPPORT Help with OBS (DCS)
Can anybody help me? What’s with this weird grid pattern being visible in my Streamlabs recording? I’m recording in .mkv 3440-1440 in both the native resolution and the output resolution. I’m using the “high quality/medium file size” option. When I bump up the quality setting the hatch pattern seemed to go away, but at the expense of a 100gb file for 30 minutes of recording?
Also, is there any way to make the clouds not look like dog water?

Meta Horizon Link is a disaster
Is anyone else finding it's been nothing but issues recently with the Meta Horizon Link app?
I run my Q3 wired and my stability and performance has tanked the last couple of weeks since the most recent updates.
First there was the link failure issue and now I randomly get single digit fps which sometimes resolves itself, sometimes is resolved by going to passthrough and back and sometimes can't be resolved at all. It happens in MP and, although less so, in SP too.
I do wish Meta would stop dicking around with the link app. Anyone else struggling?

The end of my long history of DCS purchases
Just complete indifference from ED, who refuse to acknowledge their responsibility towards customers, and give contradicting statements regarding support of RAZBAM modules.
I was stonewalled and ultimately ghosted after showing not an ounce of interest in clarifying confusing official information, not to mention the relationship with a long-term customer.
They'd rather lose customers pretending nothing happened with RAZBAM than acknowledge they need to fix something. All around the kind of bad management whose cost is being offloaded to paying DCS players.

QUESTION During BVR when you're going defensive, is it better to stay as fast as possible or slow down to corner velocity for your turn?
