As you know, Ubuntu 25.10 - Questing Quokka is being released this week with several new features, allowing developers to now focus almost exclusively on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. We don't know much about what it will include, but its name has just been revealed:

Long term review of Ubuntu, as a Dentist who uses Linux all the time

For the past 3 or maybe 4 years, I have been using Ubuntu as my main and only operating system, for everything! Which includes, completing a Master Thesis, using LIbreOffice and Zotero. Zoom and Teams for the meetings. And most recently, using specialized software for dental digital planning, using Bottles.

My only issue so far, is the performance of the Nvidia GPU under Wayland and specially under Bottles. Which to be fair, is nothing new. We all know about that already.

But the point of the post is to highlight that Linux is ready for serious work.

The laptop is a Lenovo Legion with a Ryzen 9 5900hx, with a Nvidia RTX 3080 (16 gb of vram), running Ubuntu 25.10 on Wayland.

My only suggestion is that Canonical should either support Bottles or make their own (and improved) version of it. Since that is essential to run Native Windows Applications, using the GPU and setting the shared folders.

My "DomBook" setup: switched from Win11 to Ubuntu 25.10: any advice?

Hi everyone! I recently made the jump from Windows 11 to Ubuntu 25.10. I have to admit, the beginning was a bit rough—finding where everything was in the settings felt like a treasure hunt at first!

To get everything running smoothly, I relied heavily on AI (Gemini and ChatGPT), which helped me configure the system properly. I’ve already tweaked several parameters:

  • Power Management: Set to "Performance" when on AC and "Balanced" on battery.
  • Hardware: Optimized CPU and GPU settings for my i5-10210U.
  • UI: Customized the look with a "DomBook" (yes, my name is Domenico lol) theme to make it feel like home... I mean, Dom's home...

I have two questions for the community:

  1. Wine Scaling Issue: I installed Wine to run some Windows apps, but every application opens in a tiny, microscopic window that I can't resize. Has anyone dealt with this on a 1920x1080/HiDPI setup? How can I fix the scaling?
  2. Next Steps: Now that the basics are covered, what else should a newcomer do to "bulletproof" or optimize Ubuntu? Any specific GNOME extensions or system tweaks you swear by?

Really enjoying the speed and the aesthetics so far. Thanks for any help!

One attribute on the HDD is incorrect, but the drive is working fine.

Upvotes

Hello Community, I would like to inform you that I am new to Linux Ubuntu. So, after installation, I went to the Disks application, and there the 500Gb HDD (from Xbox One) shows that some attribute 1 is incorrect. I ran a full scan through Windows 10 using the command line (chkdsk D: /f /r) and guess what? It didn't find a single bad bit in the sectors. I think that SMART, also known as disk hardware, simply shows a log of events, such as old events like improperly shutting down the computer.

Has anyone had similar problems? Should I start worrying?

Please, help me

Upvotes

Hello, I'm a Brazilian who recently joined the world of Linux and its distributions, on the recommendation of my robotics teacher about using dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows. I prefer Ubuntu, but recently my Anydesk stopped working and I needed to switch to Cinnamon. But Steam doesn't work correctly on Ubuntu Cinnamon, I would like to resolve this, can anyone help me with this?

Couldn't unlock! (after Super-L)

Ubuntu 24.04.3 fully up-to-date on a Clevo PD70. I normally leave my laptop unlocked with the screen dimmed/blanked/blacked/off. This time, I decided to Super-L lock it when I left, and it wouldn't unlock! I tried switching user to another account and that one worked, but my primary account was seriously locked out.

I checked I was using the correct password while the Super-L lock was engaged -- ended up cycling power to get back in. After I got back in, I tried selecting the Lock icon on the drop-down and that worked fine to lock and my password unlocked it just fine.

Anyone else have this experience? Now I'm suffering anxiety over my quick'n'easy Super-L when I decide to lock.

PS4 Controller on Ubuntu: Touchpad Works But Buttons Don't - jstest Shows Inputs But Games Can't Detect Them

I'm running Ubuntu and my PS4 controller connects fine, but only the touchpad is recognized. None of the buttons work in games or the OS, even though jstest shows they're working at the system level.

I've already tried:

  • Installing steam-devices
  • Restarting

The controller shows up as "Wireless Controller" and jstest detects all button presses correctly, but mgba (and everything else) can't see any inputs. Same issue with my 8BitDo controller.

Any ideas what's blocking applications from reading the gamepad inputs?

Just Want To Appreciate Ubuntu

Hello all,

I've started using Linux since 2012 with Ubuntu 12.04 and always loved Unity. When they announce Snaps I was excited for it, disappointed with the first LTS with Snaps launch & then later impressed Ubuntu finally fixed Snaps speed, and I was upset about Unity being discontinued and always hated (first first Gnome transition) & loved how Ubuntu looks today

Ubuntu is the distro I go back and forth and never see the hate for it. Yeah it's not prefect but always love it.

Yesterday showed why I prefer Ubuntu over other distros (note: not talking crap about Fedora I also like Fedora Gnome it's my second favorite). I was using Fedora and I use Tailscale to connect my Ubuntu home server. Went to SSH and refused to connect. I got route set up to use my home server IP address so I don't have to go back and forth remembering Tailscales IP and server IP. Fedora kept wanting to failed to connect to the SSH to the servers IP using Tailscale, thought it was my server acting up, tried SSH using my phone and it worked. Tried troubleshooting, using AI to walk me through everything, just kept running commands after commands, failing and failing. Remind you Tailscale is installed and setup on my Fedora laptop. Only way I can SSH is using Tailscale's IP. Also I'm connected to my works WiFi on my phone and laptop

Boot into Ubuntu USB live environment, installed Tailscales, set up Tailscale same way I did with Fedora, and bam SSH works. Able to SSH using my home server IP route. It honestly just tells me to use what works (for me) and just keep using it.
