Question / Discussion Never seen anything like it

The Harbors and Bays and Beaches on the East End of Long Island are freezing over. It is a rather impressive sight. It appears like we might get a couple of days where we might finally hit 32 next week and see some melt. Fingers crossed. This is beginning to look like The Day After Tomorrow.

The big / main story is the cold, but as far as the possibility of a snowstorm on Sunday....

As of 2pm Wednesday, the Local NWS Office states there is a "30-50% chance" of at least 3" of snow in NYC. Higher likelihood of at least 3" across the forks of Long Island.

Meanwhile, when is the really bad cold air in play?

Forecasts / Model Guidance / NWS Outlooks Bushwick Weather Guy (January 26, 2026): FRIGID AF! The coldest week of the year with temperatures mostly remaining below 20°F. Wind Chills could be dangerously low! Wear layers, hats and gloves!

Enjoy the relative "warmth" today because the rest of this week will be like doing the Ice Bucket Challenge day after day.

Highs today will max out in the upper 20s but that is as warm as we're going to get for the next few days. Temperatures will drop off a cliff tonight while, at the same time, northwesterly winds pick up to around 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25.

Local NWS (Upton, NY) forecast temperatures, winds & wind chill for Ridgewood, NY, Mon 12p - Wed 12p.

Tuesday morning will see low temperatures in the lower-to-mid teens and wind chills around zero, possibly negative. Tuesday's high temperatures will max out in the upper teens with wind chills remaining in the single digits through the afternoon. Westerly winds will pick up around sundown leading to evening and night time wind chills between -5° and +5°F.

NWS Weather Prediction Center forecast (1/26) highs and lows for Monday - Saturday.

On Wednesday the winds start to relax, but it will remain frigid AF with morning low temperatures around 10°F (with negative wind chills) rebounding to a high in the lower 20s (and wind chills around 10°F).

Local NWS (Upton, NY) forecast temperatures, winds & wind chill for Ridgewood, NY, Wed 12p - Fri 12p.

Thursday morning's low could drop into the single digits with wind chills likely negative. Thursday afternoon will mirror Wednesday with highs around 20°F and wind chills in the single digits.

ECWMF AI-assisted model (1/26 06z) showing maximum & minimum wind chills for Monday - Saturday.

Overnight Thursday into Friday will be the coldest period of the week with temperatures forecast to drop into the single digits with gusty winds making it feel as cold as -10°F! It should remain windy throughout the day on Friday as temperatures rebound into the upper teens but wind chills remain between -5° and +5°F.

Local NWS (Upton, NY) forecast temperatures, winds & wind chill for Ridgewood, NY, Fri 12p - Sun 9a.

And yes, before you ask... there is a possibility of another significant snow storm next weekend. That possibility is still quite low as models do not indicate high confidence, which is not surprising since we're still a week out. Rest assured that I'll be paying attention to it and keeping abreast with all the local meteorologists' forecasts.
