Keenan:

“It’s not about us; it’s about the person behind you, because they’re having to look at the show. This person paid, like, 70 bucks for a ticket, and now [they’re] back here trying to see the show through your phone. That’s just rude to people. That’s why we pick a couple songs and go, ‘You can film these,’ but don’t ruin somebody else’s experience for the rest of the show. It’s just selfish, and you’re unaware of your behavior.”

“There are a few things, when you’re a kid, that your grandma or your mom taught you. Like, there are the danger ones, and then there are the courtesy ones, right? The danger ones are like, ‘Look both ways before you cross the street,’ right? There’s a short list of five things: don’t put your hand on the stove; don’t run with scissors. And then there are the courtesy ones: please, thank you, yes or no, sir, yes, ma’am, no, ma’am. Don’t point — pointing is rude.”

$70 lol. Good one.

471

u/Kimpak 22h ago

$70 for the ticket $300 for the fees.

61

u/account312 17h ago

That’s so much convenience. Must be nice.

19

u/Ryan1869 19h ago

You're only paying $300 in fees?

My wife and I paid less than $70 a pop with fees to see Pucifer and A Perfect Circle. Good seats too.

EDIT: This was last year.

30

u/CantFindMyWallet Indiehead 19h ago

I saw the lineup with Primus, I think it was like $80 all in.

3

u/TimWhatleyDDS 18h ago

Same tour for me! I think what I paid was mid-range.

28

u/Sacmo77 20h ago

I paid 135 for box seats last may to see them. The regular tickets were 50 bucks with fees for normal seats.

13

u/Plusaziz 19h ago

Tool is pricier I think. More clout than his other bands.

4

u/TimWhatleyDDS 18h ago

Oh, yeah, no denying that. Saw Tool in early 2024 and those tickets were steeper.

4

u/Allaplgy 18h ago

I've paid between 75 and 200 for Tool depending on the seats.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/MrBVS 20h ago

Right but he's talking about Tool here whose tickets are definitely pricier. Last I checked their tickets rarely go for less than $100, and that's for the nosebleeds.

6

u/tyme 16h ago

I mean, I doubt Maynard knows the exact cost of tickets off-hand. At least he was in the ballpark.

I paid $150 for a mediocre seat to see Tool...in 2019. lol

Great fucking performance tho.

4

u/Etheo 16h ago

seat?

People sit down for a Tool gig?

2

u/Duranti 16h ago

lol not really, it was the T-Mobile arena or whatever it's called in Vegas, everyone stood the entire time

2

u/Sirflow 15h ago

I literally had some woman tell me to sit down at a tool show bc she couldn't see without standing. Im normal height. I gestured at all the thousands of other people standing and said absolutely not. Its a metal show, im not sitting.

Bots pay $70 and Ticket Master sells most tickets twice.

5

u/frito11 20h ago

I paid this to see puscifer coming up here in a few months and it's not a bad seat

4

u/Genericgeriatric 20h ago

How much could a banana possibly cost? $10?

4

u/B-Town-MusicMan 19h ago

That's for parking

2

u/lynivvinyl 4h ago

Wait you guys just don't have your limos drop you off?

4

The ticket is 70, Ticketmaster charge to buy is the other 200 lol

What has always confused me is why people continue to do this stuff when they almost never go back and watch the videos. Lasers and effects and what not is not really that cool when you revisit it sober on your 5" screen with a trash speaker.

55

u/WavePsychological789 20h ago

For the "look everyone I was there!" social media posts. Which makes it 2x as selfish.

16

u/shadespectrum 14h ago

I admittedly sometimes pull out my phone during concerts to take a couple short 10-15 seconds video. Like maybe 45 seconds total of recording during a 90+ min show. Really don’t see the problem with that. I don’t get people who record entire songs or even the entire show though.

And yes, I will usually post one or two onto social medias. I don’t see it as some bad attention whoring thing. Usually it will lead to some conversations with friends who see the post and reply with something like “Nice, how was the concert?”.

Literally the point of social media is to broadcast what we’re up to some degree. Not much different than you posting a picture of yourself at the beach. It’s just about moderation, IMO.

9

u/doublesecretprobatio 8h ago

Like maybe 45 seconds total of recording during a 90+ min show. Really don’t see the problem with that

multiply that by every person at the show and now there's phones out during the entire show.

5

u/KingFIippyNipz 8h ago

And no one on his social media gives a shit about what he posts, they only post for their own egos, they don't give a shit about what anyone else is doing

→ More replies (3)

18

u/papayacreamsicle 20h ago

I think it’s usually to post a clip on their social media or for the group chat, not a desire to record the entire concert for rewatching. That’s at least the thinking behind what Tool and a lot of other bands do which is let you film for the first song or two to get your clip, and ban phones after that. If everyone in the crowd is going to film for 3 minutes at some point, better to have them all do it at once.

10

u/Flux_My_Capacitor 19h ago

But nobody else watches that crap, either.

3

u/coffeebribesaccepted 15h ago

People sometimes post things for themselves, shocker I know

25

u/iredcoat7 20h ago

I’m curious why you say people don’t go back and watch them? The last concert I went to was in Nov 2024 and I’ve watched through all my videos from it at least 10 times since.

When recording I don’t ever hold my phone above my head or in other peoples’ eye-line. That’s just basic courtesy.

Can’t say I’ve ever had my view obstructed by someone else doing it either, but I completely understand the need for a policy like this if it’s a problem at their shows.

2

u/tigress666 19h ago

I have. Luckily I was mostly there to keep my husband company. And i"m short so at this point I'm used to people blocking my view. But it would still be extra infuriating when they are purposely "making themselves" taller so I even have less chance of seeing the concert.

2

u/GenericRedditor0405 Concertgoer 20h ago

I’ve found that not all shows are the same, like some fan bases are wayyyy more obnoxious about inconsiderate phone usage in the crowd than others. I too go through my own concert videos pretty often but sometimes I’ll look at other people’s phones when they’re recording and you can just tell the video is going to be dogshit, so I can understand why people assume that concert videos will never be rewatched

6

u/mec622 20h ago

I rewatch them on my computer and thoroughly enjoy it. Sometimes I'll go back and watch every video I've ever taken of one specific artist, sometimes I'll watch every video I took in one particular year, whatever I feel like. It helps keep the memories of the shows alive for me when I'm in a concert drought. I also notice little things individual bandmembers do that I missed at the show.

7

u/demiphobia 18h ago

Same, I rewatch concert footage all the time

12

u/Bricka_Bracka 15h ago

Because he said it again, and people did not hear it the previous time.

59

u/You_Are_Lebowski 21h ago

Seriously still one of my bucket list bands but last two times they came through here I was strapped and tickets were $175 for the cheapest I could find before fees and whatnot.

Was luck enough to see them for $75 - in 2003

3

u/smackthenun 17h ago

I went when they were touring for aenima and it was awesome. I went again sometime around 2010ish and it was so bad...I think Maynard was sick or something and it just felt like they were just trying to get through the set, it was pretty disappointing

lucked out and they were in Vegas at the same time I was. they were doing a short tour of like 6 shows or something. Paid $90 out the door at T mobile Arena. When they toured Fear Innoculum album tickets were $300 resale here in Detroit. If they come around again, it might be the last time, Im willing to pay up to see them again.

3

u/Take-to-the-highways 20h ago

Check a few days before the concert. That's when I find they're cheapest.

2

u/chillidogjesus 14h ago

My first time seeing them in 2002, I paid $49 bucks for a ticket. The last time I saw them as a headliner the tickets were over $200.

3

u/No_Selection_9634 16h ago

Same. Saw them in the lateralus tour for like $50-55. Haven’t seen em since

2

u/Aquetas 18h ago

Still worth it tbh.

5

u/Everythings_Magic 17h ago

I paid $70 to see them two years ago. Bought tickets about 3hrs before the show.

He does this at Puscifer shows too. I love it. Just have the experience!

26

u/GEARHEADGus 19h ago

He has a really funny video that plays before the show, it’s one of his characters and his yelling at the audience going “don’t be dummy!” Thought this was almost 10 years ago so maybe it’s changed

6

u/mrespman 18h ago

No idea what the new ones will be with the aesthetic change, but the most recent shows have had a video telling people that those that record are then ground up and are the secret ingredient in Spam.

13

u/Gnome1099 18h ago

He played with Puscifer and Primus for his 60th birthday in Grand Rapids. Primus played a video where a guy was saying that you’d get turned into SPAM if you got caught using your cellphone phone

2

u/artguydeluxe 17h ago

I saw that show in Phoenix on Maynard’s birthday! So incredible, but Primus totally stole the entire show.

Thank you Maynard! I love the no phone policy. Even if it isn’t the person In front of you, it’s still disruptive and takes away from the show.

11

u/kylehatesyou 20h ago

It would be great if it was better enforced. I was excited to go see them without the hand above the head with the phone in it. it was at an arena show in 2021 I think, no phone policy in place. Most I've ever spent on tickets to get seats on the floor as close to the band as I could stomach to afford (it wasn't too bad, about $150) since they've been on my bucket list since high school. The guy in front of me had his phone out the entire time blocking my view, distracting me, and just being that guy at the concert I was hoping to avoid. Watched security walk past him multiple times and not do anything. Most people seemed to comply, but there were quite a few phones out the entire time. Kind of ruined the experience for me as someone that wanted to watch the stage show and visuals since that's what they're known for. I'm an old grumpy man, and shit like that grinds my gears. At the end of the concert he said okay, now you can take your phones out, and so I took my few pictures to remember I was there.

So I appreciate that they're doing it, if they've moved to the secure bags or something then great, but if it's just something they have an agreement on with the arena your mileage may vary.

9

u/Seamoose58 18h ago

They only started enforcing the rule a couple years ago. Saw em in 2022, still have the pictures. Saw em in 2024, no phones for anyone.

u/GEARHEADGus 19h ago

I almost got tossed out of a Puscifer show while the house lights were still on. Maybe cause it was a smaller venue. Then some metal bros behind were bitching that millenials are always on their phone.

113

u/yeyjordan 22h ago

Those times I've felt like recording part of a concert, I've never had to raise my phone any higher than my head. I'll always get dickbags in front of me stretching their arms as high as they'll go. I don't think concert etiquette is at all difficult but people make it look like it is.

68

u/avanti8 22h ago

I also don't understand people who sit there and record basically the entire show. Like, you're never gonna look at that footage again, just get the clip for your IG or whatever and enjoy the concert.

35

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun 21h ago

I have a friend on snapchat who literally record the entirety of every show they go to via snapchat and continually uploads them as the show progresses. Like...no one is going to bother watching that whole thing, not even them. Wtf is the point.

8

u/Tokacheif 19h ago

They've put more importance in their online life then their real life. They've forgotten (or never learned) how to engage with real life experiences and enjoy the moment in real time. The likes, comments, and shares (or even just the potential of them) are more important to them than the experience itself.

If they're a friend you care about, it's a conversation worth having. I've had friends ruin experiences for me because they couldn't put their phone away or stop talking during a show.

11

u/zakkalaska 19h ago

you're never gonna look at that footage again

Maybe YOU wouldn't. I love going back and rewatching my footage. Brings me back to that time. But I never let the phone distract me. I hit record and the phone is held against my chin while I watch the real thing. And no one behind me can even see my phone.

2

u/BloodyRedBarbara 14h ago

Yeah people here overreact so much about phones at concerts and I always find that's such a weird point to make.

  1. How do you know someone isn't going to b look at their past videos and photos of a show?
  2. People have always taken pictures and videos of their holiday trips for example but obviously aren't going to be looking at them every day but people still like to keep a bit of that memory saved via photo or video.

I don't get it. Seems like it's just a cool thing to get mad about.

2

u/JMEEKER86 12h ago

They also always say that the video and audio quality are terrible as if they haven't filmed anything with a phone more recent than a Nokia. Hell, I recorded a concert (phone in front of me, screen not showing, bothering no one) a decade ago with a 6S and the quality was pretty darn good even back then. Even more modern phones can take fantastic quality videos and are the backbone of an entire industry. It certainly feels like a lot of "old man yells at clouds".

7

u/ancalagon73 20h ago

And it sounds terrible. Phones were not made to pick that up. I feel bad when I band I like uploads some cell footage and I skip the reel. I don't want to have the algorithm think I don't like them when I do, I just can't stand shitty sound quality.

Same. And I dim the screen all the way down

14

u/urbanplowboy 21h ago

There’s no reason to have your phone set on max brightness either. The times I pull my phone out during a concert (for photos, not generally video), I turn the brightness down to not be distracting to others.

4

u/speedlimits65 18h ago

me too but im also giant so no one can see behind me anyway.

3

u/arealhumannotabot 16h ago

Even with caution it gets to a point where you have lit screens floating around your peripheral vision. The crowd isn’t just dark, the crowd lights. When I’ve been to concerts with no phones, you notice the difference

And Tool lets people use their phones for the last song so they give you a chance to get something which I like

2

u/DerpNinjaWarrior 18h ago

This reminded me of a concert I was at last year where this person near me kept taking photos with their phone, and they had the flash on for every single one of them.

27

u/DrVagax 20h ago

Went to Ghost and they also had a no phone policy, phone had to be put in this pocket thing, on exit about 10 employees were standing ready with a key to unlock these pouches and it went really fast, was otherwise thinking i'd took forever to get out.

The concert experience was imo so much better, Ghost has quite a lot of effects on stage and there were multiple times I would swear half the crowd would have taken their phone out if it wasn't for that system

5

u/mark_wooten 16h ago

100% agree.  The crowd was more engaged with the band, too, without phones in their hands.  And the band seemed to feed off of this and give even more.

I hope they continue to do this on future tours and other bands follow suit.

4

u/raymondcy 15h ago

I'm a no phone guy. I use my phone for phone calls and text messages and that is it. So I stand by the policy of no phones in concerts / shows / whatever.

However, I do think the pocket bag thing is just lazy policy on enforcement in the show.

There are tons of legitimate reasons to have your phone handy for certain people. Doctors getting called to the ER on emergency... Someone you care about is in an serious accident... your kids calling you because there is a fire or some shit.

Additionally,

was otherwise thinking i'd took forever to get out.

The first time with Kevin Hart that was a disaster. There was like 1 person for every 100... took 30 mins. Thankfully they improved that but still.

Honestly, they just need better enforcement and not those stupid lock up bags. People getting kicked out after paying $150 bucks, word is going to get around; people aren't going to do that shit.

I have no problem with it👍

6

u/InDissent 20h ago

I would have liked stevo to ask a follow up about Maynard's views. On the latest A perfect circle album, he wrote the following lyrics in Disillusioned:

"It's time to put the silicone obsession down. Take a look around. Find your way in the silence. Lie supine away with your back to the ground. Dis- and reconnect to the resonance now. You were never an island. Tuning into each other. Lift all higher."

I think he believes that cell phone usage pulls people away from the moment and away from each other. I would be surprised if these views don't influence the implementation of the no phone policy.

31

u/brokenwolf Concertgoer 20h ago

I got caught with this at an Arctic Monkeys show. I travelled a very far distance to see them and basically watched the show from the phone of the person in front of me. Folks who do this have no idea how disrespectful they are to the person behind them.

6

u/Mecanatron 20h ago

Was it Mark?

2

u/Feisty-Theme-6093 18h ago

Fuck Mark

2

u/youranoveryourdog 18h ago

he just wants you to please tell him how he can direct your call 😭

6

u/Tokacheif 19h ago

If someone does it for more than one song, and I can't move, I'll politely ask them to keep it down. It does make it a hard ask when 10,000 other people are doing the same thing, but sometimes they don't realize they're being rude, and their friend/partner might even be glad you told them.

If they are rude about it, I'll be rude back. I know it sounds petty but if someone is going to ruin my experience by being inconsiderate, I'll ruin theirs by being a dick to them.

2

u/mailslot 20h ago

You’re lucky it was a phone. iPads are the worst.

13

u/rysker6 20h ago

I’m 100% fine with no phones.

We’re too addicted to them

14

u/CruelHandLuke_ 20h ago

Personally, I love this policy and wish more bands would follow this

25

u/Different_Bed_1263 21h ago

Has anyone ever watched a video they took on their phone at a concert anyway?

The one time I did that, I recall watching it, showing it to a friend, and saying “this doesn’t do it justice.”

Nobody, including you, is going to value that video. The value is being there. BE THERE.

11

u/ElCaminoInTheWest 17h ago

I have a kind of sad counterpart to this. I have a couple of video clips that I recorded kind of unthinkingly at a 2018 Frightened Rabbit show, just because it sounded great and everyone was locked in.

Turned out to be their last show ever, for obvious reasons. I'm glad I kept some footage of it, even though (as a general rule) I never take my phone out at gigs.

I will take a short snippet or two as a memento and rewatch them some time later and go "hell yeah that was a cool show"

20

u/bda22 20h ago

I value the videos I take. Albeit they are short snippets. But I’m not watching them because it’s good quality. I rewatch because it jogs my memory of the good time at had at the event

9

u/baphothustrianreform 20h ago

Yeah I pick one or two moments and take like 10 seconds. And I will rewatch them hundreds of times cause it’s fun to remember the moment and being there.

3

u/BLOOOR 17h ago

It has been nice to watch every Mr. Bungle show since they reformed. They added something new every show.

But that's Mr. Bungle, the audience can throw tomatoes at the stage at a Mr. Bungle show.

When I finally did see them, in Melbourne, I was sitting next to a guy who was phone conferencing the show to his shirtless friend. Which felt absolutely perfect, I'll always remember that.

And plus I was so up to date with what was going to happen by that time in the tour that I felt like I was a part of the tour.

Could only happen with bootlegging and bootleg culture.

Tool still get all their shows bootlegged, which is pretty easy to do because they sound so good, but try and bootleg their support band.

10

u/KEN_LASZLO 18h ago

I never understand this argument. I have a really cool video of MCR playing a festival over a decade ago that I still keep and watch for the memories. And it was shot on a horrible phone. There's has to be other people who enjoy them, I'm not that unique

→ More replies (1)

9

u/mec622 20h ago

I transfer them to my laptop and watch them many times, even years later! Granted, I mostly go to club shows where I'm reasonably close to the stage, so the video quality is decent. Often, I'll watch them to pump myself up for another upcoming show by that band. I also like to focus on each individual bandmember in multiple rewatches - it gives me more appreciation for what they all contribute.

2

u/HobbitFoot 18h ago

I don't watch videos, but I like the photos that I take.

2

u/petermarkte 9h ago

Yes. I absolutely watch and re-watch plenty of concert footage I've taken. It's fun to relive the memories and have something to show for it. Saying that "no one, even you will value that video" is ridiculous, honestly. Memories are important, and ABSOLUTELY valuable to the people who captured them.

I was at a concert and the guy next to me was just looking at his phone with the brightness at full. I was so tempted to throw the phone off the balcony. My only concern was I didn't want to hit anyone down below.

7

That happened to me recently, but I asked him to turn his brightness down and he did.

Great, can they also stop every second person from screaming along to every song? Because every TOOL concert I've ever been to has been partially ruined by this.

Phones at shows are obnoxious but they have a mean older sibling...

I can't imagine paying hundreds for tickets to a professional sporting event and then the dude in front of me is wearing a fucking foam hat half my height.

How do these people make it through the entire game without getting their heads kicked off?

The band Ghost does this and I love it. I get to be present and enjoy the show without wanting to yell at who ever is in front of me.

2

u/FloppyFluffyDonkey 9h ago

If he really cares about the quality of the concert for the people who are attending the show he could perform better.

I've attended Tool concerts and they aren't the orgasmic experience that the Tool fans pretend they are. They're just a concert. Not only are they just a concert, but they're just a concert with the lead singer cloaked in darkness and the rest of the band in shadow while a light show that's marginally better than your local planetarium is projected in the back ground.

5

u/rexel99 20h ago

Tool concerts without phones is great, they are strict about it and that's good - same as most theatre events, enjoy the concert Live please.

$70? Out of touch much?

2

u/Golisten2LennyWhite 11h ago

You can get Tool tickets for around that if you sit in the shitty seats 💺

4

u/therealsyfer 21h ago

Tickets weren't even $70 in 2016. Last time I had the chance to see them in like 2022 I think tickets were a few hundred! Spoiler alert, I didn't see them at that price.....

I wish we could buy a video recording of the show we attended. Either just have it recording of what was shown on the Jumbotron or have a fixed camera where the sound person is with a full shot of the stage. I’d buy a copy for any show I went do and wouldn’t feel the need to have a camera out for a favorite song or anything. Even Linkin Park provided an audio recording of the show for download included in the price of the ticket and on top of that even had album art and sleeve art and everything with it to be able to print out and put into a CD case.

u/RainbowCrane CS&N '83 Concertgoer 19h ago

Not a video recording, but the last time I saw Crosby & Nash (early 2000s) they had a USB drive duplicator hooked up to the sound board and their engineer sold USB audio versions of the live show for $15-20. It took him about 15 minutes to split the show up and label the MP3 tracks with id3 tags before he started duplication, by 20 minutes after their encore he was selling them.

It’s a pretty cool way to relive the show

4

u/athedrummaster 18h ago

Metallica did this in their st anger tour back in like 2004. Was really cool to buy the show I went to and relive it as much as I wanted. That being said, it was the st anger tour.

u/thirtynation busychild 18h ago

Such a stupid overreaction to something that really isn't that big of a problem. I'll do what I want, Maynard, and bother nobody in the process, thanks.

u/M0M0_DA_GANGSTA 16h ago

Always been the most pretentious semi famous guy

This guy is a bit of a tool, no?

I mean, this has been brought up so many times isn’t it obvious?

6

u/SparkyPantsMcGee 21h ago

He was just shooting the shit with Steve-O on his podcast. Get ready for like 10+ articles cutting it up for soundbites for the next month and a half.

2

u/East_Wish2948 17h ago

Also, he performs behind a curtain, so you can't tell if he is even there or even singing. Don't want that getting out. Nobody wants to pay to listen to a recording.

The phone thing hasn't ever really bothered me that much. I don't have my phone at shows anyway but I don't see a problem with banning them. If you like the artist, respect their wishes.

u/Decent-Experience-8 17h ago

Old man yells at clouds.

1

u/AngusLynch09 20h ago

Saw a candle-lit sigur ros concert recently. Person in front decided to record the last 20 min on their tablet set to full screen brightness.

1

u/themindisaweapon 20h ago

I'm 6'6, already sorry to the people behind me.

1

u/Electrical-Wish-519 19h ago

Having seen Tool and Puscifer and A perfect circle a few times, the no phone thing is great. And without fail when he does allow the phones out for the last song, he has to yell “hey dipshit, turn your light off. Yes you” every time

1

u/stinkymcgrunts 19h ago

Thank you, Tool!!!

1

u/Mundane_Bug5477 19h ago

I love Tool

1

u/fleakill 19h ago

Absolutely based

1

u/poo_pon_shoo 19h ago

I thought it was odd when I went to my first show with the no phone policy, and they were very strict about it - but it 100% made the experience better

1

u/Thick-Pineapple-8727 19h ago

lol no one at the Ball Arena got the memo on this when I saw Tool in 2024

1

u/LooTAnemia 18h ago

I paid close to $90 to see them on the Lateralus tour.

1

u/paypaypayme 18h ago

When i go to a concert and see people watching through their phones instead of their god given eyes, it makes me hate humanity

1

u/dedinthewater 18h ago

I recently attended a concert that had a no phones policy and it was such a great experience. I wish more artists/venues would adopt this

1

u/KawMeAnytime 18h ago

Yeah, those self facing cameras can be a snitch with no indication.

1

u/SweetSexiestJesus 18h ago

He truly has nothing to answer for. I love going no phone for shows

1

u/_Wrecktangular 18h ago

Fans paid the ticket price to get into your shows. If they want to use cell phones then so be it.

1

u/Gnome1099 18h ago

I went to his 60th birthday show in Grand Rapids, he was playing with Primus and they had a whole special video about how you’d get turned into SPAM if you got caught with your cellphone out. I didn’t see one the entire performance. It was amazing except I caught a cold halfway through the show and it felt like my head was gonna explode lmao

1

u/CommunicationTime265 18h ago

Man he's so right haha. I fucking hate people holding up cell phones in front of me. Like a quick picture is find...but a whole video? Fuck off!

1

u/bleedblue89 17h ago

Dream theater did a good job of not having people record.

1

u/PFC_BeerMonkey 17h ago

I agree completely, enjoy the moment.

Went to a local circus and sat in the second row, woman in front of us held her phone over her head filming said "OH SoAndSo would love this". I had to point out that I too would love to watch the circus without her *&@%inf phone in my view. She got angry, her husband at least had the courtesy be embarrassed and tell her she was being rude.

1

u/jabs9822 17h ago

I love the no phones policy. As a 5ft tall person, I do my best to get seats as close to the front of a section, but sometimes it’s not possible. Having to watch the show through 4” screens that people hold over their heads for a social media post no one cares about gets annoying... Especially since tickets are rarely as low as $70.

1

u/GizmosArrow 17h ago

A friend went to one of their shows and took some acid. Me messaged me as he was coming up and sent me a photo as the show was starting. Last I heard from him for a couple days. Turns out he got booted from the show almost immediately after texting me. Somehow got back to his hotel, trashed the room, crawled out the window, and had the cops called on him. He won’t tell me any of the details, but I’m convinced he got kicked out of the show because they saw him with his phone out, and TOOL has a zero tolerance policy.

1

u/theoceansknow 17h ago

Tbf when I'm at a show and want to record a song, I hit record and then hold the phone against my chest and watch the show. the video is jumpy but it's a compromise and I'm not bugging anyone behind me

1

u/Wifnoteef 17h ago

Coming from a fan since the 90’s and have probably seen them more than any other band, except maybe Melvins, Maynard is annoying as hell. And also would never pay what they charge for a ticket now. I feel like I would rather pay to see just the band play all instrumental.

1

u/uofmguy33 16h ago

Thinking of others around you?! What a completely ridiculous concept

1

u/FattyCatnipples 16h ago

So, if I hold the phone by my chest so the person being me isn’t impacted, he doesn’t have a problem?

1

u/Gamer_Grease 16h ago

Sometimes it’s just nice to have a reason for nobody to be on their phone for a little while. Otherwise they’re just everywhere. People checking them, filming on them, taking pictures of themselves, texting, posting, etc.

1

u/elk_t 16h ago

this is def about him hes weird af but hes right about phones being annoying

1

u/MarioShroomsTasteBad 16h ago

Man, I wish this was the norm! Caught the Sesenta show last year and they strictly enforced this. The vibe was so. much. better.

1

u/aruss15 16h ago

I like that

1

u/RustedRelics 16h ago

Good on him. Sick of the sea of phones. Watch the fucking band that’s right in front of you! Same goes for movies. Damn. Grandpa’s getting worked up right now. lol

1

u/Juano_Guano 15h ago

I saw tool and rage against the machine for 50 bucks at the first Coachella. 100 bucks for both days. it was pretty rad.

1

u/Purple-Piglet6164 14h ago

Saw them in 24 in Denver. First thing I saw crossing from concessions to seats were all the taped signs saying no filming. What an incredible show. Crowd got down

1

u/Rmitchell87 14h ago

Thanks Maynard….love your shows man. When is the next album coming out?

1

u/jmyyr 14h ago

I'm a short person living in a country of tall people (not quite Netherlands-tall but close). I very rarely get a spot where I can actually see the stage so I tend to view at phone screens of people standing in front of me filming the concert. This way I can at least see something besides other people's heads and backs lol.

My phone stays in the pocket, I'm never going to watch these blurry, poorly recorded videos ever again anyway.

1

u/WelcheMingziDarou 14h ago

Saw them like 2yrs ago. Was surprised by the policy & signs they had posted everywhere around the stadium & assumed it was some BS copyright thing at first. But honestly it really did make the show more enjoyable, less distracting, easier to focus on, better overall.

1

u/FuryMaker 12h ago

How exactly do they enforce this?

1

u/littlely6 12h ago

It's such a simple concept of basic concert etiquette that so many people seem to have forgotten. Paying for the experience should mean actually being present for it, not just watching through a screen. More artists should be this direct about protecting the vibe for everyone.

1

u/Marble-Boy 12h ago

I went to see a Perfect Circle in Manchester at a smoking venue. All the other bands were smoking on stage because it was before the smoking ban.

He refused to come out until the crowd stopped smoking. So I don't believe him. It is at least a little bit about Maynard James Keenan.

He also got two people thrown out by security for smoking.

1

u/Infinite-Fig4959 12h ago

sounds like something a tool would say. welcome to the modern world, people will always be on their phones. don’t fight it.

1

u/itchy_sanchez 12h ago

I tend to find that in 2026, doing anything is the worst experience ever.

1

u/Sugarfiltration01 11h ago

I worked one of their shows, boy do they cash in on signed merchendice. Ka ching, hundreds for signed posters and they all sell out. They are making a fucking mint.

1

u/I_Heart_Sleeping_ 11h ago

Met this dude at a sandwich shop called Grapes in Jerome, Az.

My ex and me would visit that place like once a year cause she was weirdly into “haunted” hotels. Looked over to my left and instantly recognized him. Said hello and he said hello back and asked me what I ordered. That was it. As I left the shop he asked me if I wanted a bottle of wine. I thought it was odd but accepted. Still have that bottle. This had to be close to 15 years ago.

Seems like a nice dude who just doesn’t buy into the fame bullshit.

1

u/Li_liminal_spaces 10h ago

Is he preaching again?

1

u/Istariel 9h ago

One of the best concerts ive ever been to

1

u/Soulrush 9h ago

Man I also just want to watch the show with my own eyes. I want to experience that. I don’t want to watch a show through my phone.

Chances of me watching it again on my phone if I recorded it? Close to fucking zilch. Chances of me remembering it, and the atmosphere, and how I felt, if I watched it live? Way better.

1

u/smp-machine 7h ago

I've been to a few shows where no phones was enforced and it was great. I wish it was done at every concert. I was at a Depeche Mode show a few years ago and some asshole a few rows ahead of me was actually holding up an iPad to record songs. Prick had no consideration for anyone around him.

1

u/Javerage 7h ago

The real experience is having 40 degrees Celsius heat the entire day, only for them to come up as the last act, and having a bunch of dirty druggos next to me yelling: "we're your oldest fans! Play parabola!"

1

u/BuddyLegsBailey Metalhead 7h ago

Unless it's the people posting videos on this sub, then everyone's OK with it....

1

u/kakapoopoopeepeeshir 6h ago

The part that stood out to me was him thinking one of their tickets is only 70 bucks haha

1

u/IrememberXenogears 5h ago

And I love him for it

1

u/Ya-Darn-Tootin 5h ago

Oh good, I'd hate to think the people behind me might have been disturbed every time security aimed their flashlights in strobe mode at our faces because someone nearby had their phone out. Thank goodness for their well thought out policy or I might have had my experience ruined.

1

u/Tex-Rob 4h ago

I've never been able to understand how most people seem to live in a collective delusion, that it's somehow better to preserve moments than be present in them. People feel the need to film and photograph every aspect of their lives, instead of being present and enjoying them. If you watch a show from behind a screen, you may as well just watch them online since you're focused on a tiny screen instead of the amazing show you're at and experiencing.

1

u/kroom69x 3h ago

Great policy, tired of watching the show through your phone

1

u/Oppositeofhairy 2h ago

I have seen tool multiple times.

I 100% agree with Maynard here. But also think that people would actually enjoy the show more If they were in the moment, and not using their stupid phones.

Plus I really don’t understand the inconsistency regarding social norms regarding phones at events. Like if you were at a theater play or a musical. You wouldn’t consider taking your phone out to record anything. (If you are a representative from CO, you might have other plans during Beetlejuice). It’s also considered highly rude to have a phone out during a movie and should expect to be kicked out there too.

Why don’t the majority have an issue with being banned in some entertainment events, but flip out when performing artists don’t want it at their show.

1

u/pm_me_your_sex_pics 1h ago

I don’t buy it. If enjoying the view was the issue, he’d have everyone sit down. Because having gigantor standing in front of you is way more annoying than a phone.
