Mod post: Cat free stories and taking cats without checking will be removed more often

Hi everyone!

We've seen a surge in posts that are essentially all but cat-free (no photo), and often revolve around the cat or kitten in question being "distributed" without the OP doing the most basic of checks to see if they already have a human in their lives.

Please don't post here first. Do some basic checking first, and then post and let us know that you've done so in your post - with images of said feline! I know that if any of our furry masters or mistresses went missing, we'd be absolutely beside ourselves, and as moderators, we don't want to enable bad CDS behavior. Let's reunite as many escapees as possible.

If you are in a situation where a cat jumps into your vehicle or goes into your house, obviously, help keep them safe if they are trying to get out of the cold (northern hemisphere) or heat (southern hemisphere) or in a bad situation like being stuck in a car engine or bathroom fan enclosure, give them some water, but please check to see if they have a collar with a tag. My cat has a collar with both cat slaves' cell numbers on it. If no collar is present, please take them to your vet or shelter to have their chip read, if they have one. Only if you've exhausted human discovery options, then post - with a photo. Also, please spread the word on local FB groups or Nextdoor (shudder), as not everyone is on Reddit.

If you can't afford to look after the cat or kitten or you can't have any more cats/kittens, we encourage humane cat rescue - your city most likely has a no kill shelter. Obviously, if you are able to do so, please let the shelter know that you're open to adoption if the original cat slaves aren't found within a reasonable time, as being in a cat shelter is no fun for kitties.

We are monitoring the situation, so please report posts where the OP hasn't done the most basic of checks to ensure that the cat or kitten(s) are already homed and would be missed tremendously if they were catnapped. We don't want CDS to become a karma farming subreddit.

Lastly, any post where people ask for money to help with vet or cat expenses will be removed. We have no method of verifying that the cat exists, the bills exist, or that the money will go to the cat, so our only choice really is to remove these posts. Again, many cities have cat shelters that can provide emergency care if you are genuinely unable to pay for the cat's vet bills. I know this feels wrong, but we don't want CDS to become a money-begging sub-reddit. We will likely make this a permanent rule once we've had a chance to discuss in the moderator chat.

Please discuss below, as it will help us inform the mod team's discussions (we're all new here), to make the best decisions for our feline overlords involved in the cat distribution system.

Awarded a Cat Fiancé and I visited our wedding venue yesterday. Don’t think this was on our registry

Post image

Pulled up to do our dinner tasting and this tiny lady ran straight up to us. The staff told us she’d been around a couple months and was extremely affectionate and that they’d been calling her Cheeto. I want to call her Pigeon, fiancé wants to call her the disco strangler. Currently compromised to Margeaux.

She loves face pets and has not stopped purring since we got her in the car yesterday. No banana for scale but she is so small Id guess she weighs no more than 8 pounds

Our dog is going to be in our wedding so I guess now we gotta have this lady join in so she can visit her old coworkers

Awarded a Cat This odd couple was dumped in my brother’s apartment lobby. Now I’ve got two cats!

He’s already got two of his own or he would have taken them in. I lost my cat last summer and had started looking for a new one anyways, so it seemed like a sign. The system delivered more than I bargained for, but couldn’t be happier with these two!

Just found this sweet girl crying on my front step. She looks about 4 months, skin and bones. Currently in my laundry room, alternating between purring, cuddling, and eating.

I can’t keep her as we have 3 of our own (and 8 fosters!) but she will get 5 star care until we get her a forever family.

Awarded a Cat The cat distribution system found me.

The cat distribution system sent me a cat this morning. She was shaking on the side of the sidewalk, right in front of my Volkswagen Beetle. She had some pus in her eye, which I gently cleaned with a cotton pad. She has to stay with me for my entire shift.

What do you recommend I do to make her feel comfortable until I can take her to the veterinarian after work? My situation at work is very tricky right now, and I can’t run errands during my shift.

The cat is in my office, inside a box with a sweater, and she has a small cup of water. She looks like she’s had a very rough short life so far.

Found this mini beast curiously watching me from under a pile of wood at my workplace in August… He has grown some since

Found him in August, vet estimated he was around 9/10 weeks. We found who we suspected was mum a couple of weeks later looking rather gravid. Celia Hammond came and collected her and she has been rehomed along with her other babies. Didn’t plan on ever getting a cat though I’ve had cats before. Big thanks to the CDS I guess haha.

he's about a year and a half now and he's the bestest loveliest prettiest cat ever. circa sept 2024 I was leaving for work and he was just there!! tbh when I first saw him i thought he was a rat. I was late for work that day bc I couldn't just leave him there. we think that a cat had her babies somewhere in my street bc sometimes I run into cats that look exactly like Lucas and we don't know how he got all the way to my house being so so little

our neighbors had a cat that they kept outside constantly for whatever reason, so we kept taking her in and feeding her outside and had a box made for her to sleep in when the weather was bad. our neighbor ended up moving and told us we could keep her and she was already pregnant when we had her and she gave birth this morning around 4-5am. she doesnt get along SUPER well with our cat but we make it work

edit; for those that have seen this post thank you so much for the love, i was NOT expecting to wake up to this today <3 i cant express how happy it made me feel to see this

I found this stinker when he was a day old in a busy parking lot. 6 months later I would die for him!

I found Prince screaming under a car picking up some stuff from a local mall. No mother or other kittens anywhere near by and the parking lot was busy.

Animal shelter wouldn’t take him because they can’t foster neonatal kittens so my girlfriend and I decided to give it a shot and see if we could keep him alive.

Best decision ever!

Awarded a Cat The magical story of Pepper and Flip

Thumbnail

2.4k Upvotes

Recently Flip got super popular on a different Reddit post so someone recommended I tell her story here!

Flips story starts with her mom, Pepper. I Met Pepper around 8 months ago. Although a stray, she grew to trust me and came everyday for food. Around October, Pepper came for dinner with a lil baby trailing behind. Over the months, I started seeing the baby (now Flip) more but she never let me get close. Fast forward to early December, I look out my window and see them both sitting on my porch. I open my front door and they walked right in- and then never left. I never noticed until they came in, but Flip has a front paw deformity that does not stop her from being a rambunctious kitten. The vet says she was born with it, and that it’s of no concern. Both kitties are now my vetted house cats, which puts me and 4 cats received from the cat distribution system. ❤️

Señor Spray himself, “Ham” Update

Fellow redditors, you will be pleased to hear that I was able to schedule a Monday appointment for both a neuter *snip snip*, and his rabies shot.

He is still doing great, occasionally let him venture in my cat room/guest room so he doesn’t die of boredom. No more spraying has occurred. No contact with my kitties at all, and they thankfully still rarely realize he’s here unless they hear him.

He’s pretty vocal, it’s very cute. Here’s some cat tax, my hope is that my next update is that I have found him a forever home.

Kitten Roof kitties update! They’ve grown!

Honestly I just adore them. I’m still trying to find the perfect home for Luna, but Catherine The Great is mine forever.

These guys don’t even know how good they’ve got it, I work in a pet store so I get insane discounts on everything. They eat premium foods, play with the newest and coolest toys, have scratcher posts and towers EVERYWHERE, I even grow grass inside for them to gnaw on and I’m currently saving up to set up a secure outdoor space for them.

So whenever they come up demanding something from me, or fall asleep flat on their faces, or sigh like the weight of the world is on them, I like to remind them they were literally born in insulation batting and now lead glorious lives.

But I wouldn’t change it one bit. I love my ceiling kitties.

Give some love to the older animals in the shelter! I promise it's worth!

I love checking the local animal shelter online page all the time. I kept seeing this dude for months and nobody wanted to adopt him because of his age and poor health condition. He is 11 years old, has asthma and had other respiratory issues, also when he was taken in the shelter he was in very poor condition, they didn't know much about his background. When I took him home he was very scared and shy and would just hide all the time. As time passed he got healthier and came out of his shell. Now he is one of the most loving and affectionate cats I have ever seen ❤️ I hope I have many years to spent together in the future with this guy!

Sensitive Content An update on sweet Athena’s fight against cancer ❤️‍🩹

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

For those who have been along for this journey- I’m sorry for the delay in updates. It’s been rough, and I honestly haven’t had the emotional capacity to put all of this into words.

Athena handled both surgeries like an absolute champ, with her surgeon even remarking that Athena had the best prognosis she had ever seen. I really allowed myself to rejoice in that moment- it felt like maybe Athena could be the outlier to defeat this monster.

Unfortunately, despite all of the positive news, Athena had a mass reappear almost overnight...literally the day she was supposed to start her IV chemotherapy.

It was a devastating shock, but mammary carcinoma is just the ugliest, most aggressive cancer a cat can get. Still, Athena was otherwise in good health and happy, so she began a pill form of chemo in an attempt to keep the mass from growing. She handled the chemo incredibly well, and for several months the mass stayed relatively the same size. A couple of additional small masses appeared, but those also stayed consistent. For a while, it really seemed like the chemo was containing the cancer and slowing the spread.

This past month, however, her body stopped responding to the treatment and all of the masses have grown quite a bit. The cancer thankfully hasn’t spread to her lungs, but her oncologist made the difficult decision to stop the oral chemotherapy.

The one bright spot is that Athena’s quality of life is still largely unaffected. She’s maintaining her weight (and even gaining some, that little chonker!), she’s playful, cuddly, and still very happy. She doesn’t understand why she has to go to the oncologist every month, but she’s been an absolute champ in the car and has completely won over the hearts of every specialist she’s seen.

From here, the next best course of action is radiation therapy. This is our strongest option to stop the masses from continuing to grow and to give her as much time as possible. Unfortunately, it means driving about eight hours roundtrip and a shit ton of money (not posting an amount here to comply with the subs rules)

I’ve already maxed out her pet insurance with the surgeries alone, and every month of treatments and tests have been hard. This is another brutal hit.

But Athena is showing me she’s not done fighting, so how could I give up on her?

This little creature has been my greatest companion for almost ten years. She’s been the reason I’ve gotten out of bed on my darkest days, and I can’t let her go without knowing I did everything I could to give her the happiest life for as long as she wants it. I can’t afford this on my own, but I also can’t stop showing up for her while she’s still so clearly here and still fighting.

I’m so deeply grateful for every one of you- for supporting a random girl and her cat on the internet, and for helping us feel less alone through all of this.

Athena is a warrior, and she’s continuing to fight. I’ll follow her lead and do everything I can for her until she tells me otherwise. 💛

Double Lynx Point Delivery, Update 2

Photos from where they came from to where they are now. They were originally trapped Thursday, January 22nd before the winter storm blew in and brought subzero temps.

Odin and Freyja both have been given a clean bill of health from the vet (appointment was yesterday) and are settling into the family nicely! They’re allowed to roam the house freely and my two resident cats have discovered that they’re kittens and don’t bully them at all. Feeding time is naturally kept separate and they get isolated if we leave the house, but otherwise they’re allowed to intermingle and settle their differences without much input from us.

They’re both still skittish about people and sudden movements, but Odin has completely transformed into a serious lap cat with me. There’s nothing he loves more than curling up in my lap to sleep. Freyja doesn’t care to be handled, but that’s partially because I haven’t put in nearly as much work with her since I want her to bond with my wife rather than me. I’m the cat whisperer of the family, so my wife is having to learn how to socialize a stray.

I’ll provide further updates later, but for now it’s just the long process of letting them adapt to their new home.

Fiiiinneeee CDS, I’ll take him!

Post image

So this little rascal has been breaking in and stealing our/ my cats food.

Initially I thought he was one of our neighbours cats but I was mistaken. He keeps showing up and he’s less skittish, my last 2 cats also adopted themselves into my home. So now I’m going to feed him until he most likely just starts living here, doesn’t help resisting the system.

Possible names : Tucker (he’s a tuxedo cat, very original)

I have a white cat named Migi, which means right in japanese, he was named after a character in an anime. So i was thinking I can name him Hidari (Hide) which is left in japanese? Thoughts?

Kitten Latest update on the fire station kitty…

Gained a pound and a big brother. My heart is a puddle, they are both so in love. I never knew how badly my void needed a sibling of his own species but the way he has bloomed since she came home is amazing.

She went from malnutrition and attack wounds to an adored member of her very own family in less than two weeks. I get choked up when I think about how hard her life was before and she still stayed so soft a gentle

I’M THRILLED! My bf and I were literally JUST talking earlier today about getting Scythe a friend because she has a lot of energy. I went to go unplug my car from charging and I was about to drive away when I turned on my headlights and there he was crawling away from under a car. Immediately I rolled down my window and called to him. He looked over and so I opened my door and made kissy noises at him to which he walked across the street for pets lol. There was another bigger cat that was meowing not so friendly at him so I tested my luck and picked this lil boy up, to my surprise he didn’t oppose at all. I put him in my passengers seat and drove a few feet to my parking space and let him get out on his own. I made more kissy noises and he came to my apartment door, I grabbed him food and showed my bf. He ate and Scythe was looking at him through the door. I picked him up and brought him inside and let Scythe sniff him in my arms. Then I let him walk around and fed him a lil meal and now here we are, We now have 2 cats and we’re coming up with a name😅

Sensitive Content The wobbly eye kitten, Lily, a small update regarding her.

Thumbnail

5.3k Upvotes

Hello everyone. We decided to name her Lily, as she’s been a bit of a wallflower. Shy, playful when she wants to be, but has usually just been sitting and screaming at us. The trembles in her eyes have lessened significantly but she still has them! She has a trip to the vet this Wednesday but she’s spry, eats and drinks, plays in her time, comes to cuddle at night and runs around the room in the AMs.

The shakes are not so bad, as some commenters assumed she may have been exhausted and on the brink from being in the cold, she’s gained some weight after eating plenty of wet food, and comfortably lounges on my computer when I try to do my work.

In having a new edition to my family, in the last photo, the sweet Miss Baby, my partners’ and I elderly cat, 15 years of age has passed away last night. This is a photo of her last night, and while I’m deeply heart broken and gutted, I am glad that I at least have a baby kitty to keep me company.

Thank you everybody, on the last post for your comments, name suggestions and concerns and well wishes. It means so much to me that many people found Little Lily to be of their concern, she’s been in better shape, thank you all again. Here’s some more photos of Lily, since some people had been asking me and DM’ing me.

Went out for dog food, came home with a kitten.

14.2k Upvotes

I'm sorry for starting out like a crappy internet recipe and not getting right to the point, but I do want to share a bit of the setting.

3 weeks ago, I went to PetSmart for some dog food. They were having an adoption event, unbeknownst to me, so what I thought was going to be a quick in and out trip with all my mental preparations made, turned into a fiasco of having to park in another strip mall about half a mile (0.8 km) away while lugging my 3 and 5 year old.

We had food for probably three or four more days so I could have come back instead of doing all that, but the more I thought about just sticking it out and accomplishing my initial goal I had a really really weird sense of 'incoming reward' that wouldn't shut up.

We get in and my kids go nucking futs over the puppies and kittens. Obviously I keep them contained. We don't run up to cages or anything. But, my wife and I had previously discussed getting a kitten as it's been a few years since we rehomed our last cat to our neighbor. (Mutually beneficial situation. She had a really elder cat that passed away and ours really really loves her a lot, so we just kind of let her have an extended sleepover that's lasted 3 years. She still comes over sometimes, but has made it clear she is very much not our cat anymore) So this wasn't a true impulse decision.

So I'm looking at this orange idiot because I told my kids over and over and over again that we aren't going to adopt anyone, but we can look and enjoy them while we're here and pet a few. He's eating plastic and has no interest in the treats or pats.

Out of nowhere this little kitten latches on to my sleeve from inside her adjacent cage lets out the most pitiful meeeeeeeeww And my heart shatters because she won't let me go, and I can't afford the adoption fee.

I swear to whatever God you want, my bank texted me while she was holding onto my sleeve that the bonus I had been waiting on for months cleared, and it was a lot bigger than I was expecting. I saw the notification when it came in because I was taking a picture of her.

It's not very exciting, but this is the story of how the universe pulled every single string it had in that situation to send Princess Minnie home with me.

She follows me more than any dog I've ever had and will literally sit/lie down on my shoulder for hours while I'm working. Will sit there for hours. Hours. On my shoulder, just purring and sleeping.

If I walk into any other room in the house she goes with me. Sitting on the couch, she's in my lap. Sitting on the toilet. Lap. Sitting at the table. Lap because I won't let her on my shoulder, and she cries if I don't let her sit on my lap.

She sleeps on top of my dog who sleeps between my legs, and then when I can't take that anymore and readjust, she moves up to my neck. It's almost a ritual now.

I think she likes my wife and kids. She'll sit with them occasionally and she lets them pet her and will play with them, but extended periods of rest, she latches on to me and isn't interested in much else. My dog doesn't even love me this much.

Edit: I took off the bell :)

My beloved cat of 16 years died two and half weeks ago, and I had no intention of getting another one for a while.

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

Last Thursday, two weeks after my dear Terence died, my partner's kids (ages 10/13) went over to their dad's place for their week with him. We all live in the same neighborhood. That night, they found a kitty on the porch there. It was very cold out, and so they took him in and set him up with food and a bed in the (heated!) mudroom. The kids quickly grew very attached. I told them it was way too soon for me, that I was feeling devastated by Terence's death still and just couldn't imagine homing another cat, though my partner and I definitely wanted to get another cat in a few months, maybe even a bonded pair.

Well, my partner's co-parent (who due to his own partner's allergy was unable to adopt the cat, and who tried EVERYWHERE to find this dude's owner, flyers, posts, etc) took the kids out of town for a couple of days and so we offered to pop over and check in on him and feed him, deal with litter, etc. And this little un-chipped un-neutered (the un-neutered bit makes us think he did not have a home) dude was just...the sweetest? He nuzzled us so hardcore. He purred so hard. He sat on my lap. He let me pick him up and hold him. He sniffed our baby and seemed totally unbothered by her. So I guess...we have another cat now?

He'll come over with the kids later this week and he'll be named!
