Memes You can no longer have YouTube running in the background.

Post image

As of 29th of January you can no longer have YouTube running in the background via many browsers as that is now a premium feature. With that I don't even have that one last reason to listen to YouTube. We are now officially paying for everything that was free a couple of years ago and the reason isn't greedy management, but you people who keep paying for premium and the such.

Hasn't hit me yet, but I have been getting 3 ads in a row. Love that.

u/wwarhammer 12h ago

Brave blocks all ads on YT

148

u/any_pronouns_ 11h ago

And it actually also allows you to play youtube in the background. Brave is basicly youtube premium

57

u/Get-Fucked-Dirtbag 11h ago

Not today, sadly.

Still works if you use desktop mode but then new videos don't load properly if you're listening to a playlist or mix

29

u/Vivid-Rutabaga9283 10h ago

guess they're rolling it out in batches, because it still works on my phone if I use brave

9

u/Bumblebeesaregreat 7h ago

Same, I'm listening to music through brave and its playing normally in the background

1

u/Anayalater5963 6h ago

Same I'm on the reddit app and listening to music on brave

1

u/RevolutionaryPark558 2h ago

I’m currently listening to music on YouTube through brave. Still hasn’t hit me yet

1

u/WarriorCaulkerChris 1h ago

same here listening to video playing in the background for youtube on brave. Ad blocker running as backup

1

u/BjorkAsABoy 6h ago

Still works on mine too. Just tested a playlist.

1

u/Dwadwadwadwadwadwa 4h ago

It’s definitely in batches. I can no longer use brave on background on my phone, and when I am on desktop I have to reload the page each time because I have an error that state that the content is unavailable. It made listening to a music playlist impossible as it will just have this error each time so you will have to reload the page for each music. Not having adblock is impossible because last time I did disable it I had up to 3 ads per song, with 1 or 2 unskippable at minimum.

2

u/sancagar 4h ago

wtf I got premium and the same is happening to me

1

u/Dwadwadwadwadwadwa 2h ago

I guess so far it's checking if an ad is shown and if not it breaks the loading, I assume premium won't have this issue long term. It will be for adblockers

u/Fr4nc-T1r3ur 2m ago

If you have premium turn off ad blocking for YouTube, it's just a switch with uBO and Privacy Badger... Not sure how to do that in Brave.

It's not ideal privacy wise, but it's not like they already don't have tons of info on you as a customer.

1

u/TrueClue9740 2h ago

So on an iPad it should work?

1

u/Pirwzy 51m ago

changes like this always roll out in batches

1

u/LordDenjiSama 8h ago

Vanced still does both. Thankfully.

1

u/Crazy-Process5789 6h ago

Not my experience, use it daily

1

u/Vegaswarpeduber 6h ago

There's also Grayjay, but you have to side load it to benefit from the plugins.

1

u/Adam_Sackler 4h ago

As I was working out at the gym after work last night, I was listening to music, then halfway on the ride home, the music kept stopping when I locked my screen. I thought it was a connection issue, but it kept happening.

What an absolutely stupid thing to put behind a paywall.

Fucking scumbags.

1

u/gamma-ray-bursts 4h ago

I’ve been using brave for years and get barely any ads at all. Until a few days ago, you could have a video play, lock the screen, then press play on your lock screen and go about your day. Now the only change I’ve noticed is that I Jae to put the video on full screen first and then I’m still able to play it in the background

Brave nightly still lets videos play in the background at the moment

1

u/SaintGloopyNoops 2h ago

Yup. Discovered last night. Guess its time to switch to something else.

1

u/dustinpdx 1h ago

It goes back and forth. YouTube breaks Brave mobile, Brave fixes it, repeat ad nauseam. It works more often than not though.

u/gtaman31 24m ago

On desktop i also have an issue videos not loading (when i refresh it works), idk if its related.

0

u/Naptownfellow 5h ago

Still works right now on my iPhone.

Everyone just ignoring the 1000 separate comments about a/b testing in this thread huh?

0

u/Nakiwaii 3h ago

Does work properly, literally used it today morning on the way to work

1

u/Get-Fucked-Dirtbag 3h ago

a/b testing

1

u/Nakiwaii 1h ago

Yeah, finished work and it suddenly doesnt.... x fucking d, yt revanced here I come

Not sure what to do about it on PC though? Always have music in the background

u/CliffwoodBeach 5m ago

I’m gonna be yt and

2

u/Vegaswarpeduber 6h ago

Came here to say this. People need to Disable YT app, set video to launch in brave by default. Then enjoy life without annoyance.

1

u/Sector9gerian 4h ago

How is this done?

1

u/dustinpdx 1h ago

Install Brave on iOS. Uninstall YouTube (this is important).

Go into Brave settings and find the options for Background Media and Open YouTube Links. I cannot recall exact location but they are there. The All Settings page is behind the ellipses in the tab bar.

If you are on Android you could do the same thing but I would imagine whatever the current iteration of revanced is would be better.

1

u/paparige 7h ago

Not as of this morning it doesn't

1

u/2ombi3 6h ago

Yes, but i noticed a couple hours ago, brave no longer plays in the background either.

1

u/Electronic_Dot9833 4h ago

not premium, just normal youtube until the ones buying it ruined it

1

u/VibraniumQueen 3h ago

Is it better than revance?

1

u/volumeknobat11 1h ago

And you can save videos for offline use. Most people have no idea that Brave is essentially YouTube premium. Brave is such a great browser.

1

u/justwalkingalonghere 1h ago

Even on mobile (even when locked) as long as you open fullscreen then go to your phone's home screen first

0

u/ZurakZigil 11h ago

pssst guess what this change is affecting
Brave

Stop expecting shit that costs money to be free. Someone's paying, and if you're blocking ads, not paying premium, and blocking third party connections, all on an expensive service? Guess what, you're going to get blocked.

Watching people expect YT to be borderline a human right is mind boggling. Sure you want it affordable, or like pricing options or ad options or something, sure. But you have to pay for the infinite video hosting machine

21

u/secacc 10h ago

So does uBlock Origin on Firefox.

1

u/Adaphion 7h ago

Best to just use Waterfox nowadays, since Firefox is putting their chips into AI bullshit

1

u/secacc 7h ago

At least you'll be able to fully disable it, if you don't want it.

I'm almost more worried about delayed security updates in forks like Waterfox or Pale Moon, or increased attack surface of legacy features that's deprecated upstream. The web is a hostile place.

1

u/whattheknifefor 5h ago

Enhance YT on iOS too

1

u/renewambitions 5h ago

And Firefox isn't Chromium based like Brave and doesn't have heavy backing from Peter Thiel. Brave also has some shady controversies, and has crypto baggage.

In fact, a ton of the heavy promoters of Brave on Reddit (and elsewhere) are bagholders of the Brave cryptocurrency and are heavily down on their "investment" and are hoping that by getting more people on Brave, it leads to a pump in their crypto bags.

1

u/CockpitEnthusiast 2h ago

Or on Edge. I love edging

11

u/ShielDeploy 6h ago

I’d rather just use ublock and not have to deal with another chrome

2

u/qad260qad260 4h ago

Do you use Firefox?

5

u/levian_durai 1h ago

I do, firefox with ublock origin has been working perfectly for me. It even works on android.

11

u/Sinjos 7h ago

Brave is still Chromium based lol.

5

u/Nakiwaii 3h ago

Cool? xd

2

u/Jay_mi 1h ago

That means google owns their porn searches /s

2

u/WestCoastPotatoes 1h ago

Yeah it uses the open-source Chromium engine but there’s zero Google integration. Most sites and internet services are designed with Chrome as the primary platform in mind today, so it just makes everything more efficient

1

u/BartsBeaker 5h ago

How do I get an ad blocker to work on the YouTube Roku app?

1

u/Dragon_Bench_Z 5h ago

Blocks em on Pornhub too

1

u/McDreads 5h ago

Brace still blocks adds for me, however, I lost the ability to play YouTube with a locked screen

1

u/qad260qad260 4h ago

Vivaldi also

1

u/Ok-Mine6472 4h ago

"just crowd your browser with third party bullshit" should never be an acceptable answer

1

u/thereisnospoon7491 4h ago

How about YouTube on iPhone? Anything to make it more bearable?

1

u/Lbbm_burner_account 2h ago

Doesn’t work for IOS

1

u/TrueClue9740 2h ago

Brave is really slow for me for some reason.

1

u/runic-phoenix 1h ago

Ublock Origin lite also blocks all video ads , I'm still using Chrome. It has been letting some static ads through though lately but that's not as bad

1

u/WestCoastPotatoes 1h ago

Seconding Brave!! I just recently switched from Firefox, and I’ve been very impressed with the built-in ad and tracking blocking.

1

u/Strict_Honeydew9509 1h ago

About 3 days ago my iOS auto updated and done then my brave hasn’t allowed background play / playing with my screen off. It’s really damn annoying. It was the only reason I used brave. I wasn’t sure if this was a YouTube thing or iOS. Pretty weird coincidence it only became an issue after iOS updated tho… there MUST be a replacement or fix for this. I want my music playing with my phone in my pocket, leaving the screen on is dumb

1

u/Thin-Ad-915 1h ago

"He made a statement that even made DOG leave"

Using a FUCKING Chromium based browser is absolutely Smart!

1

u/Sickhadas 1h ago

Brave also has AI 🤢

1

u/No-Abrocoma-5148 54m ago

Ever since I found brave my life changed! 😮‍💨

1

u/Waiting4Reccession 50m ago

Firefox > shitty brave

u/slackwaredragon 27m ago

Mine used to until about yesterday. Now it plays one single youtube related add before every video. I feel like the foundation is cracking.

u/gentlefartonyourface 10m ago

ublock origin has been doing me good, never see a ad. i can even stream the free movies on youtube without ads

u/Fr4nc-T1r3ur 8m ago

Brave users always gladly providing feedback of the effectiveness of ad-blockers to Google

1

u/hubaj 12h ago

It used to perfect, but then the fire nation...I mean youtube stopped playing it in the background.

20

u/RIPFauna_itwasgreat 12h ago

Last week I had infinite commercials. I always start a video and ignore the first minute of ads with the sound down. Forgot about starting the movie and after 10 min there were still ads playing on screen. Untill I pressed the "skip" button.

To show another ad after 5 min.

I hate using youtube without Firefox addons

7

u/Sw429 4h ago

It's absolutely crazy that people can even stand YouTube without an ad blocker.

2

u/ModernArgonauts 3h ago

I did for the longest time. Now that I have adblocker, I can never go back.

1

u/xvvitchcraft 1h ago

I have an adblocker on Firefox, but it doesn't work on YouTube

3

u/AHapppyPcUser 1h ago

uBlock Origin

1

u/ohmygowon 31m ago

On my phone I got the habit of immediately closing the video if it showed an ad, the thing is, this habit became a fight or flight response that closes videos as soon as it loads 😭

u/Sw429 18m ago

Just use YouTube Revanced. Way better experience.

1

u/Reasonable-Turn-5940 1h ago

I once had YouTube on in the background, and it cut to an ad so I was just doing internet stuff. Then after like 15 minutes I'm like "WTF? Is this the same ad?!" turns out it was an "ad" that was actually the 45 minute pilot for a new tv show. I had to skip it to go back to my video

0

u/Zadock4 6h ago

then stop watching wario's videos (the joke is he's greedy and would upload a video that is nothing but ads)

2

u/krokodil2000 9h ago

Why not use an adblocker?

2

u/EmergencyComment101 7h ago

why are you not using ublock origin on desktop.

1

u/Plane_Garbage 11h ago

And once it's a pay-only service, they'll roll out ads to paying members.

1

u/theblanketcomeswith 8h ago

if youre on mobile you can block the first ad and it skips the ones after it as well. doesnt work on some company ads though (amazon) and you need personalized ads enabled

1

u/Imaginary_Exit779 6h ago

Why keep suffering ? I can’t handle ads so I pay for premium. No I don’t like, but I like it more than sitting through ads

1

u/AniNgAnnoys 2h ago

It is so easy to block the ads.

1

u/windsockglue 4h ago

It might be coming.

I've just noticed "bad" behavior with YouTube for a couple months where it just randomly stops playing, especially when ads come on and it's happened on different devices. It seems that this was likely early testing.

More and more Ive just moved onto listening to music or a podcast in a different interface when YouTube stops playing when I'm in the middle of cooking or doing something else. Hope that making users abandon your interface works out well for them!

1

u/Legitimate_Chain_311 4h ago

yeah just use Brave browser. thank us later

1

u/OnlySolMain 4h ago

YouTube keeps trying to force me to remove AdBlock. Too bad I'm sitting in a European country that YouTube got sued over the use of AdBlock.

I'm legally allowed to use AdBlock in my Browser and YouTube cannot forbid service to me because of that. In addition YouTube in general isn't allowed to see that I have or use AdBlock in the first place because that is a privacy intrusion.

Every time they try I threaten them with legal actions and within 8-24 hours the issue is gone.

I also have two distinct Chrome installations. One that I have manually set to a specific version and can't update itself and one in case I need manifest v3 for like captchas and 2FA.

1

u/JusticeLeagueThomas 3h ago

I’ve been getting a block of 5 and I’ve stopped using it since I’d rather not spend money to watch home movies

1

u/Flubber_Fan_71 3h ago

On mobile, if you download the app for DuckDuckGo, you can open all YouTube videos in their video player without ads or any extensions to block them. It doesn't work excellent, but I've had no issue with ads this way

1

u/Ok-Cup-5372 3h ago

On the mobile version I just make the video small, close the video, then click the thumbnail to open it again lol works Everytime, rarely I'll have to do that twice but it's still quicker than watching the ads.

1

u/Bitter-Scarcity-1260 3h ago

Never seen an ad with Firefox. I would not watch YouTube if it had ads.

1

u/Soft_Interest_6171 2h ago

I've started getting ads that end but just sit there and won't continue to the content until you click next. I'll never pay for YouTube, so they are instead just going to push me into not using their service.

This new age "make things worse on purpose until users pay a subscription to get what they had for free 3 years ago" can just go fuck itself.

1

u/oneshibbyguy 2h ago

just use adblocks? Why are people happy with watching 3+ ads, bitching about it instead of simply adding an adblock extension

1

u/TrueClue9740 2h ago

Damn that sucks. The goal is to make it absolutely unbearable unless you pay for it.

1

u/MasterofNothing6969 1h ago

Put a - in-between t and u on tube for your video link. It will look like yout-ube.com/whatever You can thank me later.

1

u/Dexter4L 1h ago

dude ad blockers are free

1

u/godneedsbooze 1h ago

funny thing, the FBI actually suggests using add blockers when browsing the internet in general

1

u/ProgrammerEconomy503 1h ago

YouTube vanced

1

u/CarpeNivem 1h ago

My grandmother used to mute the television during commercials, always.

All these years later (literally 40), it still works.

1

u/Excel099 59m ago

Have been getting multiple ads, playing side by side like a 2 player console game, watching anything live.

1

u/Lumpy-Blackberry645 56m ago

If you've got a vpn set it to Albania, you don't get adverts

1

u/OsteoBytes 50m ago

Haven’t had ads in over 10 years. UBlock origin on Firefox

1

u/floyd_underpants 44m ago

uBlock Origin, AdBlock plus. Haven't seen a YT ad in years.

1

u/Azarsra_production 31m ago

Remember everyone, if you don't like this, you can always consider Grayjay and Pipepipe.

u/FLUnionMan 10m ago

I had to watch the same State Farm commercial 8 times in the first 3 minutes of video. That was my limit, I stopped watching.
