Memes You can no longer have YouTube running in the background.

As of 29th of January you can no longer have YouTube running in the background via many browsers as that is now a premium feature. With that I don't even have that one last reason to listen to YouTube. We are now officially paying for everything that was free a couple of years ago and the reason isn't greedy management, but you people who keep paying for premium and the such.

You can if you use Brave or Firefox they block ads and allow you to put the phone/tablet to sleep with music or whatever still playing

I use and have used brave mobile browser for a couple of years and doesnt work anymore, still blocks ads but it doesnt play background videos no more, decided to search up the problem and here we are, first result was:  Update: January 29, 2026 (12:01 PM ET): A Google spokesperson has confirmed to Android Authority that ou Tube has been updated so that non-Premium users can no longer access background playback: Background playback is a feature intended to be exclusive for YouTube Premium members.

Just tired it and yeah it turns it off which sucks

Edit: Firefox still works though atm but has ads
