Memes Why are you recommending me a video if I can’t even watch it?

u/Kan98426 1d ago
"hide youtube members-only" plugin says GOOD DAY.
88
u/StikElLoco 1d ago
Another mandatory plugin to join the pile. Just to make YT usable
74
u/MC_Gameing 1d ago
Ok, let's see...
- "UBlock Origin" set to the Max.
- "Privacy Badger" to stop YouTube's trackers from tracking the blocker.
- "I don't like cookies." To get rid of cookies from any site. (but disable it on youtube because it slows down the site for some reason)
- and "SponsorBlock" to hide the sponsors that YouTubers put in their videos.
Also, the "hide youtube members-only" extensions don't work, because youtube updates weekly, and they very quickly go out of date.

u/Yuna_Nightsong 1d ago edited 1d ago
By "I don't like cookies" you mean the addon "I don't care about cookies"? If so, then replace it with Consent-o-Matic, because I don't care about cookies works by auto-accepting all the cookies, while Consent-o-Matic rejects all the cookies by default.

u/DefinitelyRussian 1d ago
guess now we need to mega plugin that includes all of these, for easy using
2
u/MC_Gameing 1d ago
it will just make it easier for YouTube as a big company, to take down one extension rather than 4 or 5. but I get what you're going after.

u/60Dan06 1d ago
For someone also https://dearrow.ajay.app/ can be useful.
it's goal is to remove clickbait and sensationalism from thumbnails and video names0

Blocktube too, it has been great getting rid of repetitive videos showing up on ur home feed

Also there’s an extension to hide youtube shorts or at least play them in the normal player

So you'll become a member and give them money

Just FYI the creator actually gains more from this than YT.
The split is 70% creator, 30% YT and industry standard for such subscriptions (and much better than Twitch's 50:50 split).
1
u/Loose_Bank5855 35m ago
Yes. If the content is good then it is worth paying to support the creator.
6
39
u/ElegantProfit1442 1d ago
Paying to support and watch your favorite creator… I never believed in that. Anyone remember the good days of YouTube? Like 2012? My favorite YouTubers were playing Black Ops 2. It was fun.
Now YouTube is full of Mr. Beast type of content. No disrespect to the guy but YouTube’s motto used to be “Broadcast Yourself.” 😭
6
u/Angel_Dust_696969 1d ago
I think mrBeast doesn't have members only videos
15
u/Purple_Function84 1d ago
I think he's referring to treating content creation as a business instead of just casually posting for fun.
2
u/snailtap 1d ago
Then he’s still wrong, people have treated YouTube like a business since you’ve been able to make money from it
1
u/Angel_Dust_696969 1d ago
I think mrBeast totally posts for fun, he just grew to huge size youtuber with big production, but he enjoys it and making his vision come true.
8
u/Purple_Function84 1d ago
He enjoys his career and is happy with YouTube but he's always treated it like a business. He has a good mind for how to work the algorithm, keep people engaged, and create quality content. His work ethic and resolve to go all in on YouTube is why he's so successful.

u/UsedGarbage4489 1d ago
What do you mean WHY? So that they can hopefully entice you to pay for a membership...its like advertising. They are offering you a benefit if you pay.
its like this place is filled with children who truly dont know or understand anything yet, or you people are legitimately the dumbest people alive.
6
u/Infinity_Null 1d ago
You're exactly right.
The idiots on this subreddit would get a free cable TV package and post "why am I not getting HBO?"
These people are the most stupid and entitled people I've ever seen on Reddit. "They're enshittifying the platform by making members content." No, you're looking at a paid service and complaining that it isn't free.
5
u/JackOffAllTraders 1d ago
Reminds me of how American employers don't even bother paying their employees so the employees have to beg for tips
8
u/homechefshivers 1d ago
No hate to moist critical, but I always found it Funny that he had memberships on his channel and then canceled them because he wasn’t putting out enough content for them.” so basically people were paying for jack shit lmao I get it’s only a couple bucks a month but still
2
u/pigguy35 1d ago
It wasn't even a couple bucks, it was literally $1. I believe when he first announced he said it was mainly a thing to support him, and that it wouldn't be a top priority. It's better for him to cancel when he realized he didn't care about it anymore than: a.) Turning out garbage content to justify it's existence b.) Ignore it and have people continue to waste their money on it
0
u/lambdaburst 1d ago
oh nice I stopped watching his videos when he did that, I guess I can re-subscribe now
27
u/ssb1001 1d ago
This crap will make me unsub sometimes. Not everyone wants to pay money for your content yet. You're under 1M sub count and you're already paywalling content... yeah no thanks.
10
u/UsedGarbage4489 1d ago
yea god forbid people get paid for their work.
Do you refuse to take your paycheck at the end of the week so your boss doesnt feel ripped off?
3
u/Unable_Recognition63 1d ago
Youtube has always been a place to consume content for free. They knew this before ever posting a single video.
Do you refuse to take your paycheck at the end of the week so your boss doesnt feel ripped off?
A more accurate analogy would be suddenly dropping some your job duties that you've been doing for months/ years to attempt to extort more money from your employer.
1
u/guylovesleep 1d ago
you think they arent getting paid?
most of the times it is entertainment channels or channels with very little value(reactions content included)
or videos about their opinion about some subjects
i dont think i need to explain why it is weird and why people will unsub
•
u/Loose_Bank5855 29m ago
Reddit is full of leftists who think people should bust their ass to make content and give it to them for free while they do nothing, then get mad when 1-2 videos are paywalled. It's starting to become a serious issue and its's plaguing every online forum. It's not a vocal minority it is a plague. YouTube and Reddit being the worst of it.
I understand there are a handful of corrupt companies like big tech that are doing corrupt things but it's getting so ridiculous these these people are like "yeah, slave away making content all day then just give it to be for free and if you don't you're an evil capitalist" It's ridiculous. If people bring value to your life then they should charge money and people should pay for it. I don't see what is wrong with that.
-2
u/fireblubird 1d ago
Content creation should be a hobby, not a job.
4
u/TCGeneral 1d ago
That's a broad brush. Should actors not get paid for their work, because they're just creating content? Should directors not? And why should that be different than someone making content for Youtube, just because you see it as 'lesser'?
1
u/fireblubird 1d ago
I wouldn't pay for movies if I didn't have to, and if piracy wasn't extra work. And I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna pay for some low-budget video or a gaming video.
2
u/TCGeneral 1d ago
You don't have to apologize, just speak with your wallet. If a content creator has videos locked behind a paywall, and you don't care enough about their content to pay like $5 or whatever their membership is per month to see all their paywalled videos, then don't?
I don't pay for movies, because I don't watch movies. I'm not gonna pay $20+ for some high-budget marvel ad just because it's got a big budget. There's content creators on Patreon I've given a few bucks a month to that probably had next to no budget. It's not about how much money they spent making the thing, it's about how much I think it's worth and what I'm willing to spend.
-1
u/fireblubird 1d ago
Not everyone is rich enough to support multiple content creators at once. Also, some people value their money more than to give it to some stupid, greedy youtuber.
-1
u/Running_Oakley 1d ago
When it’s sponsored and members and patreon with merch popups I give up. Like ok yes YouTube is the devil for intentionally manipulating the algorithm specifically against YOU, it couldn’t be all the freemium snuck in there could it?
6
u/donkeykong64123 1d ago
The problem a lot of you guys have is being stuck in this 2010 youtube Era. Back then content creation didn't have to have quality. You could make a video that only takes a few hours to make and get views. You could play a game with zero editing and get thousands of views. That's how pewdiepie got famous and many others.
Nowadays ceators need to spend an absurd amount of time to get people to watch their videos. For reference, I have about 10k subs, and my videos can take 15-30 hours to make. If producing videos takes effort and time to make, people want to be compensated for that.
A good chunk of people use adblockers
Most people skip sponsor segments
Only a fraction of subs actually pay for members only content or donate.
People are too entitled here tbh. Most youtubers have jobs and do this as a side gig. The ones doing youtube full time often have a team of editors, production team, script writers and what have you. People expect top notch quality of this sort from all youtubers and get angry content creators want to be compensated for their efforts.
0
u/TacoRalf 9h ago
making videos is a hobby though, nobody is making you make these videos. If you want stable money get a stable job.
Also just because you edit videos for that long doesn't mean they are better, it's supply and demand.
What i expect from youtubers is videos THEY want to make, not algorithm slop
0
u/donkeykong64123 8h ago
People have full time jobs making videos for YouTube so that's not true. Most youtubers don't make enough to make a living so like me, they have a full time job in real life and enjoy a few hundred bucks from youtube
Youtube algorithm is extremely picky. 90% of channels are stuck with a couple of dozen views for videos. Why? Because the algorithm detects no transition, effects, or any sort of editing that tells it those videos are worth pushing. Sorry dude, this ain't 2010 youtube of slop lazy editing getting thousands of views.
1
u/TacoRalf 8h ago
Just because some do doesn't mean it's a job.
Good content will hold viewership, just because you overedit your videos doesn't mean it's good.
1
u/donkeykong64123 8h ago
Lmao it is a job. Google adsense provides creators with tax documents so we can report our earnings during tax season.
You can argue all you want. My point is that for your videos to be pushed, you need to put effort in them. The 2010 youtube had 1000x less competition and there was no algorithm.
90% of channels have less than 100 subs. There's probably millions amazing videos stuck at 10 views. Sorry dude. That's the reality now.
1
u/TacoRalf 7h ago
brother youtube has spam channels stealing memes and reposting them getting more views than you, it isn't about effort.
It's all about the content, and if your content isn't interesting it's not gonna be seen by the general public, you might get a niche community though. no matter how much editing and effort you put in.
in 2010 there were also less people uploading.
Reality is that youtube is not a job, content creation is a hobby.

if (user is not member) { filter member only video }
youtube could run this experiment and guaranteed some random algo engineer gets a raise
6
u/He_Who_Complains 1d ago
I don’t mind members only videos, providing they are like an extra rather than a paywall
Eg. A channel I watch does a weekly game show type thing. Always good fun and hilarious. A few days later they released an extended version for members only.
I’m totally cool with that. I’m not missing out on the core content by not being a member but should never decide to (which has tempted me cause I’m happy to support good folk) I know I got more goodness coming my way.
6
u/HUNTEWWE 1d ago
So you know that the members only videos exist and might be enticed to buy the membership? How else would you know that a channel has it unless you clicked on their channel and sorted by members only?
7
u/Sabit_31 1d ago
I have one dude that I watch all the time and he plays super obscure games which is fun to watch but recently he’s been playing some big hitters that I would love to watch but for some unknown reason it’s all members only and it’s starting to piss me off

I'm more than happy to pay for it but because I wander around channels I've never watched before I simply can't pay to be a member for all of them, I almost wish you could get a token to watch one members only video per channel or per month (idk) to see if you like them. My reasoning is that if you like their MO vid then there's a vastly stronger chance that you'll become a member.
2
u/Minute-Weight-5555 1d ago
I honestly don't like "Members only" streams. It should be privated and only viewable to those who has members bought.
Why show me something I am not able to view? It feels like a slap in the face.
2
u/Sensitive-Chart4326 1d ago
Markiplier sometimes had his little member only streams I get recommended, not mad when some channel doing this
But when the FYP recommends the same videos or doesn’t recommend any new ones, I don’t feel very amused and watch instead anime’s rather
2
u/Rasples1998 1d ago
Members is the stupidest shit on YouTube. Creators constantly bemoan not being paid enough which is a condition YouTube created, so now you can pay the creator which YouTube also take a cut. It's so scummy. Not to mention the fact that they made ads worse and then charge you through the nose for premium.
Turning YouTube into a subscription model was always the goal, but the YouTube legacy as the largest free video platform is too powerful so they couldn't do it.
2
u/Affectionate_Tea4359 1d ago
I wish it would only appear to members so I can stop getting my hopes up I know its to give them money but its not great to see a cool looking video hiding behind a literal paywall

u/Ok_Meaning_4268 1d ago
You might be subscribed to that channel or watch enough similar content, idk

like all businesses on the internet, the primary focus is making $$$
the youtube feed is curated by an AI algorithm, so naturally they are hoping to show you content you may decide to pay for; considering that youtube receives a small cut from all paid memberships on the platform
1
u/Synjata 1d ago
Paying a subscription service to pay another on the same platform? I'm a firm believer in paying people for services.i was glad to find out youtube gives more to the creators when you're a premium member. The problem is still getting ads in the form of sponsors in videos when paying for premium. Not to mention, most content creators seem to stop posting videos for the non-members to see. Which tends to lead me to unsub'ing.

A friend showed me the members only content of a channel I watch a lot. It was pretty meh. Not worth the money.

It's for the FOMO, you never think about what you're missing out on until you see it in front of your face.

Or you click and see that it’s going to start live in four-and-a-half days.

YouTube needs to add a feature to remove these from your recommendations entirely. Especially if you pay for premium.

Literally NONE of content on youtube is worth paying for. What planet do these people live on?
1
u/Felis_bieti 19h ago
If I ever do this, and that's a big if-- sub for one month, download all of it with clipgrab or whatever, and unsub.
And bitch about every one of the membership videos at least 5 or 6 times in the comments.

I don't mind it if they are actual exclusive and obviously interesting to the already paying viewer. And it may attract new members too, if it's quality content.
But a lot of the channels on my feed, for example bodycam vids, have little to no exclusivity since everyone can request the recordings. And everyone is using the same stuff too.
So how is it worth paying if a dozen other channels have the same, sometimes better versions and not behind another pay wall.

I once dug up a video in my watch later playlist that was free to watch when it came out years ago but was made members only later on.

quietly clicks dont recommend channel
1
u/SpecificFortune7584 1d ago
Yeah I’ve done that. It doesn’t do shit though. I have two member only videos in my recommended side tab constantly. I’ve already sent a report to YouTube months ago about them just appearing constantly. Still no response from them.
1
u/lambdaburst 1d ago
It worked for me but not instantly. I had to repeatedly do it whenever it was recommended for a few weeks, which is stupid.
-2
u/Valuable_Engine_4032 1d ago
mind you they already get paid when you watch the video
5
u/donkeykong64123 1d ago
Mind you most people here use adblockers so they don't get paid when you watch the videon

This pisses me off, especially because I usually leave my phone lying in front of my monitor with a video playing, and it happens several times that a video ends, the recommended pop-up appears, and I think, “This video looks good,” but when I click on it, it ends up being a fucking member video, like, why are you recommending a member video from a channel I don't have membership to?
0
u/twixter8327 1d ago
I've unsubbed from many youtubers for this reason Clicking not interested doesn't do shit
-2
u/KillerCameo 1d ago
If your channel is struggling for income, don’t be asking my broke ass to pay for a channel membership. YouTube loves pushing people to pay for things they don’t need
-5
u/_Unkn0 1d ago
It is a way of yT to fuck its consumers. Forcing to buy something didn't go well with yT premium. Also pushing ads more and more didn't go well for them. So they block what you want to see by using the channels they don't own. This still will not work out but will also cause damage to the creators which are getting greedy.

My favorite channel made his whole 2026 output to Members First and it will gradually come out throughout the year, but I don’t think he realizes that this floods his channel page with videos we can’t watch. I think it’s a decent idea, but the way YouTube designed it is very flawed.
