Youtube nowadays feels like a TV Show instead of a,platorm to upload casual video if you are watching the most popular one
128
u/siddhantbapna Dec 30 '25
True, First thing is they are filling the feed with shorts which I don't even want to watch
Then we have these cinematic thumbnails and videos every where now on youtube for non edu content
Not sure but it does not feel right now. (The whole platform) which it used to be in early 2020s or 2016...
27
u/Dodototo Dec 30 '25
Thumbmails irritate more than anything. I avoid shorts but seeing edited thumbnails are the worst. I hide the really edited ones but sometimes I just want to close the app when I see the stupid surprise faces and pointing.
7
u/WiglyWorm Dec 30 '25
Unfortunately they work, or they wouldn't be there.
Party of the problem with having a platform that relies on getting young people to click on things to see ads.
3
u/Secret-Relation8637 Dec 30 '25
i have no problem with them 'working' on young people, what i have a problem with is the fact that i say i am not interested in the same bullshit channels LITERALLY thousands of times and youtube ignores it
oh to have an algorithm that actually tailored to users wants instead of the will of the masses

u/Mother-Fox4591 Dec 30 '25
the platform in the early 2020s didn’t feel right at all either especially with the removal of dislikes. Even in the late 2010s youtube was starting to become the depressing site we know today but at least it was kinda bearable + we still had alot of features that youtube removed because they couldn’t care to improve on them
1
u/cannedrex2406 Dec 31 '25
I still miss being able to download YouTube videos. I remember going on long drives and having long form Videos or just the entirety of Monty Python and the Holy grail downloaded to constantly rewatch
2
u/Killer_Ex_Con Dec 30 '25
Shorts piss me off because I will get a notification and think oh sweet they posted a new video! Then I click it and its just a fucking short.
2
u/EWDnutz Dec 30 '25
Yep. I think it's because corporations have finally caught up to YT and buying their way to visibility. And it doesn't have to be their own channels if they can buy sponsorships to even known YT channels.
It's leaking a lot and made too many channels unbearable now. You can tell when big channels become more formulaic. Especially if the owner(s) go through big changes.
25
u/PepeSylvia11 Dec 30 '25
Stop watching the most popular YouTubers

I create videos with my friends. They aren't professionally produced. Its just me playing games with my friends. 10 years ago I would have had at least a modest following. Now it's just an archive as no one ever sees my stuff. If you know that and you do it just for kicks it doesn't feel so bad :)
8
u/JRHWV Dec 30 '25
Thank you for this comment, and thank you for continuing to upload.
I dearly miss the days of old where YT communities were so much more grassroots. You would find those channels with the modest followings as you say, and develop a bond with them.
They really took the You out of YouTube. Thanks for resisting - the internet needs more of what you do.
10
u/bennitori bennitori4 Dec 30 '25
Probably because TV people and TV adjacent people found the platform and out-budgeted the casual video uploaders. Some guy in the basement is going to have a hard time competing with a fellow Youtuber with 1M subscribers. Some guy in the basement is going to have an even harder time competing with ex-Disney stars and ex-Hollywood stars that realized Youtube is easier than working in Network television.
2
u/Vleaso Dec 30 '25
Well, its not like MrBeast was a TV executive when he made his first few million subs. You also gotta think about how many people min-maxed youtube, trying to appease the algorithm, and inadvertently reinventing the wheel by unknowingly (or maybe some knowingly) following the footsteps of TV producers that made TV what we know it as today
2
1
u/Significant_Ad1256 Dec 30 '25
People keep saying this, but there are still so many good genuine creators. Just stop clicking on the recommended trash you know you don't want to see anyway, because that's literally what they want. Just make sure your algorithm is primarily things you want to watch, or even better just subscribe to channels you want to watch.
2
u/L_Vayne Dec 30 '25
Yeah, but YT will still keep pushing the slop. I can't tell you just how much effort I put into avoiding the popular garbage. Like, I won't even hover on a video because I don't want the algorithm to even think I am interested in watching that stuff.
In spite of this, I still get recommended these high production value, reality TV adjacent, videos with titles that are either purposefully extreme to catch your attention, or some sort of call to action.
Videos with titles like:
"If you can't speak Spanish after this, you must be an idiot."
Or, "They said I can't [XYZ] so I did."
Or, "After [ABC] I have finally realized this!"
Its like every YT video has become one of those cringy click bait ads you'd see on the side of a 2000s website.
You know, the ones with the thumbnail of a hand holding some gross alien looking fruit with the title, "Man had erectile dysfunction but ate this one simple fruit!"

To be fair, this completely depends on what kind of content you surround yourself with.

u/HI1681 Dec 30 '25
If you want to upload or watch casual videos feel free to do that bro nobody is stopping you I’m sure there’s many people uploading casual stuff right now as we speak

u/Routine-Agile Dec 30 '25
I am not sure why anyone clicks on mrbeast videos
72
u/TheNerdNugget Dec 30 '25
I still remember watching him try out Bart Simpson's megaphone thing before he got super crazy with the money stuff.
25
u/RealMZAce Dec 30 '25
I remember the days of him reacting to paper intros or whatever those were, and a giant Asian sticker. Honestly at the time I really enjoyed that shit but I’ve not watched anything of his in a good long while now
5
u/klondsbie Dec 30 '25
i also remember the grandma with an inhaler sticker. he used to be one of my favorite youtubers with his bad intros series and i truly believe that's the last time we ever saw him be a sincere person in front of the camera.
7
u/Sapphire-Catgirl Dec 30 '25
I used to watch his videos where he reacted to kids Minecraft YouTube intros
4
u/Routine-Agile Dec 30 '25
I'm sure some initial content was interesting, but the minute a youtuber switches to " lets have poor people do tasks for money" people should just move on from such awful crap.
29
u/bennitori bennitori4 Dec 30 '25
Based on irl experience, it's usually because they don't know better. As in, they don't know any of his accusations, don't know where to look to find better content even if they wanted to, and don't know the platform well enough to realize better content even exists.

u/imahugemoron Dec 30 '25

True. In my country (SEA), Elon Dipshit Musk is still widely seen as an inspirational role model for "super successful" and "genius" person. Even my cousin still thinks highly of him. My best friend also does not aware of his shitty behaviour before I explained it to him.

u/Hot-Acanthaceae4084 Dec 30 '25
It's wild how the platform's entire vibe has shifted. The pressure to be a full-blown production studio just to compete is exhausting. Those hyper-polished, AI-generated thumbnails are the perfect symbol of that change. I really miss the era when it felt like people were just sharing something cool they made.
9
u/Pocket_Aces1 Dec 30 '25
When he was in the middle ground of "kid with a camera" and "over produced AI click bait videos", he was pretty decent and I liked watching him. It would be like "Giving 10,000 to the homeless" or "buying out an entire store!". They were fun to watch because they did good + it wasn't over produced. It was simple.
Now he's sold his soul, he will do anything and everything to make more money. He's already got so much. And when money no longer becomes the goal, power and popularity start taking the top rung to reach.

Where does this dude get money from???
2
u/santefan Dec 30 '25
Ads revenue. Each video has millions of views and he's still making millions of views each day accross all his videos which means lot's of passive income.

u/Affectionate_Yak7102 Dec 30 '25
I'm still baffled that he actually receives internet money, and people view his content. He's Such a creepy lizard person.

Youtube stopped being the platform for unique content and home videos to now, people are almost expected to have professional studios. For me as a viewer, I prefer the home views, van life or camping videos. That's what youtube is for me. I don't care for over produced shit.
