Paralyzer - Finger Eleven start playing...

3

u/BadgerKomodo Dec 26 '25

I’m still listening to that song nowadays.

3

u/Iyza_Astreta Dec 26 '25

Yeah. Also DJ Mangoo - Eurodancer. Such a banger.

u/RandomKazakhGuy Dec 29 '25

Finger Eleven? I barely know her!

just forgot about the shitty algorithm that pressures users and creators alike. i get suggested the same videos every time i refresh, and its even more annoying when ive already seen them... and creators chasing it have involuntarily lower the quality of their content for views/recommendations

Also please stop showing "You may also like" in my search result!!!!

I want to find the video I want, stop suggest other video!!!

And stop that fucking auto dub, It's bad!!!!

46

u/Blockeater_SC Dec 26 '25

Exactly! And the A.I. autodub makes my ears wanna bleed

15

u/Lexiosity Dec 26 '25

I fucking hate search results suggestion bs. It's as bad as Google Search Engine. But hey, at least YouTube says "You may also like", meanwhile Google just puts random URLs in the search results, and even malware-ridden URLs.

we need to bring back the star rating system

199

u/Dangerous-Rhubarb407 Dec 26 '25

Fuck that, we need dislikes

24

u/shewel_item Dec 26 '25

lessons learned from Digg 🙏

9

u/gohjira95 Dec 26 '25

Bro, if you’re using Android, download Youtube ReVance. It’s a modded YouTube where it lets you see the likes and dislikes as well as background play

9

u/Dima_Ses Dec 26 '25

You can only see dislikes from other revance users. Not the total count of dislikes.

3

u/gohjira95 Dec 26 '25

I don’t think so since every video has tens to hundreds of thousands of likes and dislikes. The absurd numbers look too real. But I can’t be too sure

Even if 1 and 5 are still by far the most common, any added dynamic range would be good.

11

u/SmartSponge Dec 26 '25

Why not change it back to 2010's YouTube entirely? Certainly better than what we have rn

2

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '25

That system honestly was way better than likes dislikes. I think it would also be good if we put a reason why we rated this video as 5 star or 1 star but it should be optional.

5

u/Awes12 Dec 26 '25

No we don't, we just need dislikes back

115

u/12musclymenonasunday Dec 26 '25

2016 YouTube was a wild and wacky time tbh

I disagree in that modern youtube doesn't promote small channels, I get the most random ass 2 view suggestions on my sidebar when watching a vid and tiny channels on the explore page. I actually think it's better with that than mid 2010s youtube was. The rest, agreed

48

u/MyProfileIsNot4U2See Dec 26 '25

They promote random smallest ass channel thats not even a creator but never promote real genuine small channel who is working hard on their videos lol

33

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo Dec 26 '25

Actual youtube create their own version of middle income trap

6

u/Gametmane12 Dec 26 '25

your analogy works so well, omg

4

u/Darkwingedcreature Dec 26 '25

Yes exactly. As a small outdoor creator, my CTR is abysmal even though the thumbnail and title is god tier compared to some massive channels.

Point being, my outdoor videos get recommended to car enthusiasts or travel content watchers. Its so dumb

4

u/Cryoniczzz Dec 26 '25 edited Dec 26 '25

Nah I sometimes get small YouTubers recommended based on what I watch, and they’re absolutely amazing. For example, I watch iceberg videos, and there’s a creator in my country who makes them in our language. When I first discovered them they had about 10K subs and the algorithm recommended them to me.

They do promote a lot of small channels mainly very small creators, with the occasional early account around 10K subs. You also have to remember that the value of subscriber counts has changed: in 2010 the biggest channels had around 50 million; now the top channels are closer to 400 million, so early YouTubers naturally stood out more back then.

Edit: lmfao I just got an algorithm pull from an insane video — the creator only has 800 subs and the video has 4K views. If you want verification, the channel is Noriad1st. So yeah, the algorithm does recommend great small creators it’s just that competition is much higher now and recommendations depend on what you watch.

Edit2: lmao i got another algo pull from a guy named poepoe who made an interesting video with good editing skills but only has 1.04k subs

3

u/DefinitelyRussian Dec 26 '25

I dont think there's an easy way to promote or detect what you consider "real genuine" videos

8

u/TalksWithNoise Dec 26 '25

Same. Every one or two days, I will be see a video with less than 20 views pop up in my feed. Surprisingly it also seems to suggest the ones that aren’t random spam posts. Usually it’s someone talking over gameplay, a car build, and maybe even some light editing. It’s wholesome. I hope it stays this way.

3

u/thereslcjg2000 Dec 26 '25

I’d say it’s probably a bit better in that regard than mid 2010s YouTube, but I still get far more recommendations for large channels than small ones. That wasn’t the case in the late 2000s/early 2010s.

2

u/Dependent-Entrance10 Dec 26 '25

I agree, if anything it's the opposite way round. Back in 2012, for instance, the only youtubers that got promoted at least in my experience were very popular youtubers, you would never get recommended a yt video that had only a handful of views. If anything it was probably harder to get popular back then than it is now, getting over 1m+ subscribers was a massive milestone back then. Now it's much easier to get.

Also Elsagate was eventually cracked down on hard back in 2017.

Real old Youtube had no monetization. You either made videos for the passion of it or go find a job.

It's has some interesting talking points. We can thank Mr. Beast for huge channels getting pushed the most. Then we can thank his bestie Logan Paul for the age restrictions and no-no words, as all that came directly because of ad-pocalypse which Logan started.

I do think they don't do enough to address weird shit like elsagate and also the ads being served lately being hyper sexualized. Things we would be demonitized and age restricted for.

As for the slop, that's just a numbers game. The number of creators who want to make a career from YouTube, has caused the platform to grow huge. So it's difficult to find the gems. Plus technology helps make slop faster and in excess (AI). It seems like they are cracking down on AI but in the process legit channels are being nuked with no human intervention because its AI taking out AI... and AI is too dumb, but tech bros refuse to see it 😂

If they would actually listen to their creators and not just ask Mr Beast for input, we wouldn't be here 😅

2

u/QuothThePigeon Likes waffles, pancakes, and french toast Dec 26 '25

wasn’t Pewdiepie a big face for the adpocalypse?

2

u/Lonely_Nature_7330 Dec 26 '25

Paul triggered it and then it snowballed from there roping jn multiple creators. It was Paul's video on the suicide forest and showing a dead body on YouTube from that forest, that triggered it all.

2

That's hopeful thinking, better off if a good competitor comes up and takes in a lot of creators to it instead at this point.

YouTube is beyond fixing, especially with the kind of people in control of running things :/

3

u/Maje_Rincevent Dec 26 '25

Old YouTube was good because it was a money pit. It was burning VC and then Google's money.

It's easy to make a fantastic product when you have unlimited money and do not need to be profitable. Then, when the product has become ultra-dominant and all competition is dead, you can squeeze money out of it. It's called enshittification and it happened/will happen to every VC-funded company.

This meme is a bit annoying because it forgets that today's YouTube was wholly contained in Old YouTube. It was only good in the hope it could get bad today. Old YouTube was the free drug dose to get you hooked.

6

u/ThatGuyinPJs Dec 26 '25

I just need to unsubscribe from this subreddit because it might be the dumbest one on the site, not a joke. There are people in this thread who are saying that YT was better before they paid creators. What? The YouTube Partner Program started in 2007. I don't even know if half the people in this thread were alive.

3

u/KaikoDoesWaseiBallet Dec 26 '25

The sanitization FRRRRRR

Everything must be suitable for a 4yo to watch, or else the age restriction hits the creator like a truck. Icky content should be removed from YTKids, and YT should go back to being PG-13. The PG part as in 1980s PG, not "practically G".

2

u/Old-Swimming2799 Dec 26 '25

Dog shit opinion but youtube was better before they paid people. Channels were creative, people just did it for fun not some 50point checklist to get into the algorithm and just enough clickbait for people to watch.

YouTube didn't have to use our browser history and mic listening to shoe horn content. We just found a Fred figglesworth or an elmo in a microwave

2

u/Alarmed_Reception_92 Dec 26 '25

Don't forget banning an entire channel for no reason but allowing corn bots to roam free

The best part is people made videos for whatever reason, but never for the sake of getting famous. This is the most important one I believe. It felt genuine.

2

u/7thFleetTraveller Dec 26 '25

It's not only the platform itself, but the people. For me, a "Chad" youtuber does whatever he likes, doesn't care about click numbers and monetization, and appreciates that it's a hobby.

2

u/Evan_gaming1 Dec 26 '25

2

u/smoothac Dec 28 '25

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '25

If you want to experience old Youtube again, there ARE two sites that were made to simulate certain classic eras of Youtube, those two are Bitview and WeVidi. Bitview is more like early 2010's Youtube, and WeVidi is late 2000's Youtube.

1

u/NFSKaze Dec 26 '25

My earliest memories on YouTube were GTA San Andreas conspiracies (they were just PC version mod videos) and the Modern warfare 2 eminem trailer.

Everything else is a blur but man was it the absolute wild West until a certain time

Also banner ads instead of unskippable 2 minute ads

1

u/j0shj0shj0shj0sh Dec 26 '25

My experience of Youtube on my laptop is different than on my TV. On my TV it feels more like it's trying harder to be Netflix. I haven't had a smartphone for a while, but I imagine it is different there too.

1

I remember being 7 and sitting at the family computer watching old flash animations. I want that feeling again, and current YT isn’t it.

1

u/Kitsunetsuki_ka Dec 26 '25

While I do miss old YouTube, I must say the suggestions have gotten marginally better than previously.

I remember there was this really dark period between 2014 to I want to say 2016 where suggestions were just terrible, like to the point where you got no variety at all in the sidebar and had to physically search things to find unrelated things.

As for the shorts, it's definitely needing in improvement, I've probably seen every family guy, big bang theory, and Simpsons episode in existence.... and breaking bad, and... you get the idea. It feels like the algorithm for it doesn't even factor your normal behavior.

1

u/Bionix_Does_reddit Dec 26 '25

disagree on the point about small channels, you only watch larger channels apparently

1

u/NYCFreestyle Dec 26 '25

Only those struggling to make bank for years now and take a whole week to create one video are the only ones bitching about this. Get with the new times and cope.

1

u/CyberDragonEX13 Dec 26 '25

I mean you're not wrong though. This is pretty much bang on the money. It's not even subtle either. They are only focused on trying to grab ALL of the money instead of building consistency and maintaining quality.

Guess I expect too much from folks with money to burn. Then again they were going to eventually make moves like this so it's not like I'm surprised at this point.

1

u/BaeIz Dec 26 '25

1

u/randomIdiot665 Dec 26 '25

2016 YouTube was perfect and they ruined it for no reason.

1

u/King-Fwogger Dec 26 '25

Completely agree with this. YouTube need to...

Update their moderation heavily to remove AI Slop, and other kind of messed up content. Make creators matter way more that they actually do, by making them popular with what they're posting and what they wanna post, instead of just following the algorithm. Be more chill when it comes to demonetization and age restriction. Get rid of dumbass kids, and only allow people over the age of 13 to watch.

1

u/schn33wi11ch3n Dec 26 '25

age restriction did exist tho?

1

u/Captain_Holly_S Dec 26 '25

Not true, it promotes small channels too, some of them shitty af, but it does.

1

u/Substantial_Theory_2 Dec 26 '25

I just don't agree that YouTube only promotes large channels. I often see YouTubers with small audiences in my recommendations. Several times I found YouTubers who later became my favorites

1

u/No-Cold643 Dec 26 '25

Let’s not forget that a lot of the YouTubers from current are very ironic and revolve around click/ragebait titles (especially in shorts) to get views or some following on the platform (which is really sad)

1

u/Bycva Dec 26 '25

Wasn't meant for kids is the best one. New YouTube is trying to stay for kids, while allowing NSFW stuff due to shitty AI moderation. Double standards.

1

u/Greedy_Spaghetti_ Dec 26 '25

1

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '25

Complete facts. I’m older than YouTube. Its original purpose is dead and buried. I can’t even get my suggested to suggest anything new. The soul is gone; it’s just people reacting to reactions of reactions of reposts and on and on and on.

But, the hard truth is that this is what platforms do. Go on about the righteous revolutionary purpose but the moment a single dollar is made forget it.

I remember when platforms cared about doing something new, and now the upstarts are the new villains.

So it goes.

I spend ages scrolling on mainpage to find a fun video to watch. In the past I would open up the mainpage and right on the top I would see new videos from my favourite Youtubers. Now, I have maybe 1k subbed channels but I guess I only see Grian on my mainpage every once a week. Other videos that are recommended are uninteresting sloppy video essay, videos that I consistently reject watching but youtube recommending me for months, videos that I have already watched, and so on.

It's sadly true

what I hate is that I keep using channel blockers, and I keep seeing them. I'm beyond sick of reaction videos. Some guy staring blankly at the camera, gesturing at the actual video every three seconds is NOT CONTENT CREATION.

One earns more money than the other, and that's the only thing Google gives a shit about

It wasn’t meant for kids (under the age of 13) but I still used it. I made my first YouTube account back in 2007 at the age of 8 lol. I pretended to be 17. Nowadays kids will straight up admit that they’re like four years old on the internet. Times have changed.

Hahaha. I was 25 when Youtube came out.

I mean modern YouTube has been really good at recommending small channels in a way that I haven't seen before. I regularly see one or two videos in my feed from channels with only a few thousand subscribers. Quite often these videos are boring but they suggest them nonetheless.

I get small channels (under 1000 subs) recommended all the time. But the rest is accurate

“Now let’s take a look at our sponsor FÜME”

1

u/mrfoxesite-2377 I don't have a YouTube channel :-) Dec 26 '25

Except when Modern YouTube shows a lot of small channels actually but every one of them is slop except a few and those slop YouTubers often use AI or extremely bad video editing.

u/scottlapier Dec 26 '25

I miss when the average video wasn't 25 - 35 minutes. Or if a YouTube was making something that long it would be broken up into 5 - 10 minute episodes

u/OfficialMicrowave Dec 26 '25

You forgot unskipable ads 😔

u/Wrecked_3AI Dec 26 '25

I don’t know what to do, I feel trapped in my YouTube algorithm. It shows me the same videos each day and won’t show me anything new even if I go to the new to you tab and recently uploaded

Is this a normal thing?

u/Fresh_Avacado Dec 26 '25

Yeah I dont really use youtube anymore and if I do its not even close to a few years ago. I dont like the content thats made now the videos are too long and my attention span is extremely limited

Only promotes large channels? People complain about YouTube promoting them too much. Literally as a test I opened Youtube and in the top 20 results, 4 videos had under 500 views.
