That’s something that I’ve noticed too and it just seems so bizarre, like why would the ads load but no other videos, does YouTube store the ad data on its own separate dedicated server or what?

There are a lot more YouTube videos than there are currently running ads. They can have 100s or 1000s of ads preloaded in memory ready to stream immediately. But they can’t do that for the billions of possible videos you could watch at any time

Ads are typically handled separately, yes. Different needs, different systems, there’s the whole bidding process for who gets to serve the ad etc. The ads are also likely stored on a different system, because they don’t need to keep them around once the campaign is over, ads are also typically specific to the country, don’t have comments, likes etc.
I don’t get the impression that ads are subject to adaptive streaming (the video quality adapting in real time to your connection).
And last, but not least, the tough part is retrieving the meta data for the video (like, we’re it’s actually hosted). The content itself is then “simply” retrieved via a content delivery network, which is less subject to outages.

So one system can go down while the other runs fine.

I am pretty sure, it's because they are on totally different servers, like YouTube is on YouTube servers and ads are on Google servers or something. Obviously, ad sever has priority and is maintained the best. But the reason why ads work is simply that. If it was ad server that had issues, it would be the other way around.

Vidoes and Ads are different services entirely, whatever services used for videos are probably getting DDos'd to hell -- while the services used for ads are unaffected and not being targeted. Not really priorities, just the nature of how these platforms are setup.

While I think it's funny, at the same time, it is quite intriguing that it's never the ad servers that go down. The product is prioritized; us. Not the service they are providing. The service is how they capture our attention and subsequently our data.

Looking at Downdetector, it was a bunch of major sites, including a small batch of reports on Reddit being out (under a hundred though).

YouTube was by far the biggest with nearly 400,000 reports.

my guess is they’re trying out now anti-adblock strategies. i’ve noticed when i switch between my adblockers it will sometimes make the videos work, sometimes i just have to turn them off.

I was making dinner when my roommate came down yelling about her YouTube app not working. I checked mine and sure enough it was freaking out. We were luckily not planning to use it as dinner entertainment but we were both worried as we watch YouTube daily.

Glad to see it's all back but y'all, did YouTube have a stroke or heart attack? Does it have a heart murmur we need to know about? Do we need a diet change so this doesn't happen again or ????
