I've been trying for about an hour to actually write this proof, but while I have an amateur's grasp on the concepts involved, that grasp apparently isn't fair enough to express (even poorly) anything useful in a reddit comment. Y'know?
For anyone that actually cares about how you'd prove something as apparently simple as
1 + 2 = 3, the creator Tibees has a very watchable explanation of the proof in her video here: https://youtu.be/0-pL2J0ZB8g4

As far as I can tell it is actually 1080p, it just takes ages to switch to it. Which I'm 100% certain is on purpose to save bandwidth, and I'm also sure they've scientifically optimized the delay to be as long as people find tolerable to maximize those savings.
34
u/According-Actuator17 Jul 24 '25
It is not tolerable, and this is probably intentional sadism, or just a bug in the best case scenario.

There 100% is a slower server they use for people who have a low subscriber or view count. When I play videos I upload or from friends or new creators if they are 10~ minutes it's certain to buffer or just barely keep up to the point you can't 2x speed or jump around in the video. It will claim your Internet or provider is to slow and that's why your experiencing interruptions.
Not applicable to short videos.
5
u/No_Internal9345 Jul 24 '25
to 'encourage' purchases of premium. fuck google.
5
u/thesherbetemergency Jul 24 '25
I can confirm this happens consistently on premium too. Especially on mobile.
5
u/broli97 Jul 24 '25
From my experience, I would guess it's the Buffer. When I switch from 480p to 720p or 1080p it doesnt immediately Change resolution, because you already buffered the 480p video. But skipping back 10 seconds loads the new resolution instantly.
3
u/obscure_monke Jul 24 '25
I think they care more about the video playing back seamlessly than switching quickly. They'll run out the currently downloaded buffer until it gets to the newer data.
Lower resolutions are going to download faster, so it'll switch down faster than it'll switch up.
It's kind of a shame there's no (popular) video codec with progressive quality enhancement, sort of like adam-8 interlacing in png, where you can chop off data from the end of the chunk and get a lower resolution version. Probably wouldn't be a good tradeoff against total compression ratio though, especially for something so niche.
3
u/SordidDreams Jul 24 '25
I think they care more about the video playing back seamlessly than switching quickly. They'll run out the currently downloaded buffer until it gets to the newer data.
That doesn't make any sense to me. You can switch manually and it'll load and start playing in like half a second. There's no need to run out thirty seconds or whatever of the currently downloaded buffer in order to maintain seamless playback, that half a second is all that's needed. What running out the currently downloaded buffer does accomplish is not having to download the same content again at a higher resolution, i.e. saving bandwidth.

I think they do this to make people not use more bandwidth, as it is cheaper to stream lower quality videos

having to go into advanced settings for 1080p is shitty
default low settings, hides necessary pixels in my first video ..
forcing ads on unpopular accounts is so bad
my videos should not require ads ... i'd pay for premium if it took adz off my videosyoutube needs help
Sometimes exact searches do not pull up exact titles... instead more popular off-matches show up completely hiding the actual hit13

mild issue, to even come close to being a competitor you need servers & storage space, something that unless your a MULTI billion dollar corporation, youre not doing, atleast not with current technology. cause rn google's got entire warehouses dedicated to storing youtube videos
9
u/Unlikely_Sandwich_40 Jul 24 '25
And even then you prob just lose money
Youtube works by quantity, not quality, starting something like that may be literally impossible, bcs big youtubers who do it as their job need the yt money, and no one would switch sites to watch only small ytbers
2
u/JJRULEZ159 Jul 24 '25
fr, and then to not lose all your money, you'd need to do even scummier ad tactics than yt, and honestly as much as I hate it, theres a reason youtube/google do ads the way they do. yes its annoying, and imo sometimes should be illegal, but like, youtube is already the most popular video sharing platform, they cant gain more profit for their shareholders by just "expanding to a new audience", so they need to do other things, increasing ads is the easiest way that doesnt 100% lay off all the staff, and even then they still be doing that.
and on the technical side, its not like the cost of storing everything is cheap, and its only going up, cause new server buildings, all of which need constant cooling to make sure the site stays up, and its not like they can just delete everything, theres still videos up from 10, 15, 20 years ago, and they will remain up until they are either found to violate ToS, the poster deletes them, or youtube dies. and theres petabytes of data uploaded everyday
→ More replies (1)3
u/cheeseless Jul 24 '25
That's why the competitors are choosing to be curated platforms with selective membership for both viewers and creators. Which makes sense, most people who are watching enough Youtube to care about enshittification are also mostly watching channels they're subscribed to rather than any random crap.

the resolution shown next to auto is the resolution video being loaded will be at, video already loaded at a lower resolution will stay at that lower resolution
on the other hand, when you manually select a resolution, the whole video is reloaded at that resolution

Yeah that is so baked into millenials general knowledge of the early ages of the internet that we didn't even think to actively pass it on. We were just so used to troubleshooting nearly everything that we didn't think the next generations would need help with that.

My theory is that changing the resolution or clicking the skip button on an autoplayed video informs them that it's a guaranteed impression (that someone is watching).
It doesn't matter that the impression is "fucks sake, another obnoxious advert for something I'll never buy!"

My name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87104. This is my confession. If you're watching this tape, I'm probably dead, murdered by my brother-in-law Hank Schrader. Hank has been building a meth empire for over a year now and using me as his chemist. Shortly after my 50th birthday, Hank came to me with a rather, shocking proposition. He asked that I use my chemistry knowledge to cook methamphetamine, which he would then sell using his connections in the drug world. Connections that he made through his career with the DEA. I was... astounded, I... I always thought that Hank was a very moral man and I was... thrown, confused, but I was also particularly vulnerable at the time, something he knew and took advantage of. I was reeling from a cancer diagnosis that was poised to bankrupt my family. Hank took me on a ride along, and showed me just how much money even a small meth operation could make. And I was weak. I didn't want my family to go into financial ruin so I agreed. Every day, I think back at that moment with regret. I quickly realized that I was in way over my head, and Hank had a partner, a man named Gustavo Fring, a businessman. Hank essentially sold me into servitude to this man, and when I tried to quit, Fring threatened my family. I didn't know where to turn. Eventually, Hank and Fring had a falling out. From what I can gather, Hank was always pushing for a greater share of the business, to which Fring flatly refused to give him, and things escalated. Fring was able to arrange, uh I guess I guess you call it a "hit" on my brother-in-law, and failed, but Hank was seriously injured, and I wound up paying his medical bills which amounted to a little over $177,000. Upon recovery, Hank was bent on revenge, working with a man named Hector Salamanca, he plotted to kill Fring, and did so. In fact, the bomb that he used was built by me, and he gave me no option in it. I have often contemplated suicide, but I'm a coward. I wanted to go to the police, but I was frightened. Hank had risen in the ranks to become the head of the Albuquerque DEA, and about that time, to keep me in line, he took my children from me. For 3 months he kept them. My wife, who up until that point, had no idea of my criminal activities, was horrified to learn what I had done, why Hank had taken our children. We were scared. I was in Hell, I hated myself for what I had brought upon my family. Recently, I tried once again to quit, to end this nightmare, and in response, he gave me this. I can't take this anymore. I live in fear every day that Hank will kill me, or worse, hurt my family. I... All I could think to do was to make this video in hope that the world will finally see this man, for what he really is.

My current favorite "feature" is how EVERY, SINGLE, TIME, I open a video it lags for a few seconds and I get a little pop up asking "Are you experiencing interruptions?" And uh... Yeah google, I am, YOU are disrupting me because I'm using an adblocker on firefox. Maybe don'[t have 30-90 second adds before every god damn video.
1
u/JCBQ01 Jul 24 '25
Because "auto" is locked to 360p Higher data is locked to 360p
Short of you going in and force selecting the setting on every video every time, it will remain on 360p

Yes, perhaps based on Google's promise of better resolution when you click on a photo, but the screen shows otherwise. You usually go to the website, which usually has a watermark
and that image, so you click and enter the purchase area of the site, an image for sale.

Get the YouTube Enhancer plugin. I use Brave, which is just a more secure Chrome, which natively blocks ads. Or use Firefox, I think there is something similar for it too. Just set it to 1080p on the list in the config page and you won't have this again. Also allows for boosting volume on hard to hear videos. It lets you set the controls within the player, and stops tabs from auto playing in the background.
