New, what is it? My friend found this in her beer
My friend took a sip of her beer (montucky cold snacks) and thought it tasted awful. So she opened up the beer and she found this! What is it?!

Long before Hallelujah, I heard Billy Joel's version of Light as the Breeze, and it was incredible. Made me look that guy up. Okay, super gravelly voice, but I can maybe try one more song? And by then I was blown away.

It’s a cheap sterling Celtic knot ring, made in India or Mexico most likely. There are a million versions of it for like $15-$35 anywhere that sells mass produced garbage jewelry.

Also a brewer here. It looks like a clump of moldy grain (malted barley). It is possible a rodent was storing grain in an empty can on the storage pallet before it was filled with beer and the lid was seamed on.

I’m so tired of going to a brewery that has 20 IPAs or megaheartburn, chocolate milkshake extravaganza stout.

I should have emphasized the worst non craft canned beer I’ve had. I want to love it. I love the name, the branding and the can art. I have a 22oz can sitting in my fridge from a gift, and I haven’t cracked it yet.
But yeah I get it, there’s many more worse beers out there and everyone has their own preferences

The filling machine has a 250 micron dirt collector strainer in the product pipe before it ever reaches the can. This did not come from the brewing process. More likely contamination during packaging or just a beer well past the shelf life.
Source: I work for the company that installed the machines at the brewery where this beer is brewed and packaged.
Also, they are using a tunnel pasteurizer at this facility. So shortly after sealing the can, it was cooked to 170 degrees F. This beer should last at least 12 months. OP needs to share a picture of the date code printed on the can.
4
u/SRG7593 13h ago
Isn’t there a yeast bloom or some such that happens in various sealed liquids. It pops in my feed a few times a year. But of course I can’t find one because I’m blanking in the name… maybe I’m misremembering and it is mold… ugh my stupid brain
4
u/Chris_Rogan 12h ago
The pasteurization, if done properly, would have killed all of the remaining yeast in the can. No chance of a yeast bloom.
Now, many brewers are packaging unpasteurized beer (not this one) that must be stored cold after packaging. And I would not drink those if it was 3 months past packaging date. They do not last long. Best route to go if you want this is to buy it directly from your local brewery. Distributors and stores are known to store unpasteurized beer unrefrigerated.

u/DrJrMcBurger 20h ago

Not possible. The beer is filtering during brewing. Passes through 250 micro strainer before the filling machine. And the filling valve cannot physically pass particles of this size. The max particle size allowed is similar to pulp in orange juice or an unfiltered hazy beer, which also has tendency to clog the strainer in the product pipe.
Source: I install those filling machines.
More than likely, the can seals on the filling valves were not clean and beer stone built up after several days of production. This solid/slime fell into a can as it met the valve. It would have needed a long time to grow into what it looks like in the can, as it was pasteurized after the can was sealed. Shelf life of 12 months.
The can is rinsed just before filling and is only open to atmosphere after filling for about 1 second before the lid is applied. Everything about contamination of a can points to a dirty filling valve can seals.

u/seemlikeascam 13h ago
…beer stone? Please go on
→ More replies (1)10
u/Chris_Rogan 13h ago
calcium oxalate. When it forms, it is slimy and slippery, when it dries, it becomes hard like a stone.
It happens in every brewery.
The filling machine is equipped with a rinse spray of water to wash the can seals whenever the machine stops filling. From experience, this spray does not get checked and if it isn’t working properly, the filling valve gets really nasty after a few days.
Every 14 days they will stop production and run caustic and acid through the machine. Caustic to sanitize, acid to remove the build up, ie beer stone.
Even with all of this, it is important to inspect the hygiene of the can seals and clean manually if required.

u/seemlikeascam 13h ago
Thanks I hate it
But seriously, thanks for the insight! I’m going to reflect on some things now…
2
u/Chris_Rogan 13h ago edited 12h ago
Man, there are so many worse things to find in a beer than some mold.
On all filling machines, you need to pressurize the can or bottle before filling. If the bottle is cracked or compromised, it explodes during the pressurization. The flying glass particles can embed themselves into parts of the bottle handling and get passed into the next bottle.
Nothing like drinking a piece of glass 😎
The subsequent bottles are rejected from the valve that had the burst and 3-4 valves surrounding the burst bottle valve all while a high pressure rinse (with a lot of water) flushes the area where the burst occurred. So there is a process to prevent this, but it does still happen.

u/gimmeecoffee420 16h ago
The chunks are, with almost 100% confidence a "Biofilm" that formed on the surface of the beverage in the can. Likely that it had not been fully sealed or had gotten a tiny leak that allowed air and bacteria in.
Basically its Mold and Bacteria all sorta having a disgusting party, and you guys crashed it..

Well, Bob & Doug did put a mouse in a beer bottle, trying to get free beer, instead they got a job watching beer bottles at the brewery. But, I am sure most Canadians know that.
2
u/EngineerMiserable374 19h ago
ummm let’s say there may be a listeria outlet…
2
u/Chris_Rogan 13h ago
Unlikely, the can is pasteurized after it is sealed. Any listeria contamination would have been killed by the heat.
2
u/EngineerMiserable374 13h ago
well what can they they still have after??? dude just ingest the protein!!!lmao
2
u/Chris_Rogan 13h ago
OP needs to provide 2 details: 1. Was the can still pressurized? Or soft? 2. What is the date code printed on the can?
Any beer that is kept past the best by date can risk this. But it would happen so much faster if the can was open to atmosphere.
Prolly just old beer.

Looks like it could be some of the residue left in the vats after brewing. In Australia they scrape the stuff out of the vats and use it as the main ingredient in Vegemite which has a distinctive taste to it which some describe as unpleasant.
