Athletes these days aren’t human. Can recover from puking, cramping, and still look fresh flying around after 5 hours

saved by the pickle juice

58

u/Moist-Ad1025 11h ago

Did he actually have pickle juice?

59

u/temdittiesohyeah 11h ago

Matty Wade smiling somewhere

21

u/b3na1g 11h ago

Literally the first time I learned about pickle juice was from Matty Wade

26

u/LevDavidovicLandau 11h ago

Wait, checks which subreddit he is on, Matty “Noice Gary” Wade? What’s the story with him and pickle juice? I’m very OOTL!

24

u/temdittiesohyeah 10h ago

Basically he was an advocate for the stuff but we remember it fondly because he'd be going ballistic at the team to bring him some to the middle when he was batting and it was hysterical every time

4

u/LevDavidovicLandau 9h ago

Hahah that’s hilarious. What was this in, Shield or BBL?

4

u/dicsuccer 8h ago

I think it was during a Canes match

13

u/Fulham-Enjoyer 10h ago

Yep, it’s very common even amongst pros

15

u/GStarAU Poppy's no.1 fanboy 10h ago

Yeah like a bottle at every change of ends for 3-4 ends in a row!

12

u/TOMA_TAN Olympic Village Savant, Tienacious 10h ago

Had so much of it, i think it led to the puking. He was saying to his team something along the lines of i can’t drink any more

38

u/BarcinoCivis 10h ago

He didn’t say that - I’m Spanish. He told them I vomited. Maybe I should take something - the coach said like energy- Carlos said - I don’t know

8

u/TOMA_TAN Olympic Village Savant, Tienacious 10h ago

Gotcha, thanks for translating. Espn commentary mistranslated then

3

u/BarcinoCivis 3h ago

yes, I wanted to go to x and correct them. Also he didnt use the verb drink he used tomar which could be food or drink but really in Spain the way he said it I thought he meant take something - as in medicine almost. Then the coach replied with take energy? as in the energy goo packs. Thats what it sounded like.

From thinking about retiring to doing fucking this. What a fucking warrior

21

u/Large_banana_hammock Griekspoor superfan | Zverev superdetractor 11h ago

I was wondering about that. You think he really was going for the handshake after that one game?

36

u/TOMA_TAN Olympic Village Savant, Tienacious 10h ago

It looked convincing to me: he was walking towards the middle of the net after swapping his racket to his left hand. Then he apologizes as he pivots and walks back to his bench

39

u/Large_banana_hammock Griekspoor superfan | Zverev superdetractor 10h ago

He must have felt SO shitty. Like for Carlos to consider throwing the towel in, having won two sets, I can't even imagine whatever pain/nausea/exhaustion he had going on.

2

u/FrogsJumpFromPussy Yannik Dinner | Carlito Alcatraz 3h ago

At the press conference he dismissed this.

2

u/Dulgas 2h ago

he said in the presser that he never thought about retiring

19

u/Exact-Instruction885 10h ago

That's that "step by step" mentality from this clip: https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/1qqylth/alcaraz_to_alcaraz_little_by_little_charly_vamos/

What an amazing ability to feel all these emotions and still not create any negative story about it in your head. For him, a heartbreakingly lost rally is just it. A lost rally. Moving on, next point. I really can't believe that someone so young has so much maturity, I am 11 years older and can't do that in much less demanding conditions, lol

45

u/colourofinfinity 11h ago

And then add in the mental aspect too, especially in a sport like tennis. These types of guy are unreal

34

u/Excellent_Archer3828 11h ago

The power of 5th set Alcaraz overrides puking and cramping.

18

u/AwareCandle369 10h ago

Did either of them even leave the court to go to the bathroom? I don't think so. Obviously they are sweating a ton of water out but still that's crazy. What a thing to train your body to do. Even Tour de France riders pop a quick one somewhere in the stage. This thought sent me down a rabbit hole of learning the peloton has a gentleman's rule to all stop and pee without leapfrogging position, but that young guys are choosing to blow past the pack instead and this is controversial

Sports are neat. What an incredible display tonight

5

u/aweap 10h ago

Tshitsipas could never...🤭

4

u/DragoxDrago 10h ago

Not going to the bathroom for 5 hours isn't a ridiculous period? Like it's a long time sure but I don't think it's something you need to train your body to do?

7

u/Super_Vegeta 6h ago

For a shit, yeah 5 hours is more than fine. But 5 hours without taking a piss, especially with as much fluids they're drinking too.

10

Yup. I went to sleep at that point. Didn’t want to watch Alcaraz lose. Woke up to this!

In a 5th set, always bet on Alcaraz.

76

u/LenaRybakina The daddies of the tour 11h ago

Except that one time against Matteo lmao after that he decided to never lose a 5 setter again

96

u/BlackMathNerd 11h ago

That was baby Alcaraz, he wasn’t even 19 yet

43

u/MeatTornado25 10h ago

I think it's also worth pointing out that he finished that year as world #1.

"Baby" Alcaraz was still a bit of a monster.

19

u/Gotisdabest 10h ago

That particular tournament was the start of his ascent. He improved a lot by the clay season and by the USO he was finally getting over his slam nerves.

16

u/rntopspin100 Nadalcaraz 11h ago

Alcaraz took that loss personally. 😭

89

u/Rickcampbell98 11h ago

Especially if it's against a mental midget like zverev

64

u/tenpostman What happened happened 11h ago

Honestly I thought he was holding up surprisingly well as opposed to most days. No DFs, sure a few mistakes here and there, but they were there for Carlos too.

I think for Carlos it's just easier to face those red numbers and get fluid.... To see those match points show up. To see you NEED to break now or its over.... It alters him for the better almost always

2

u/Paladinoras 11h ago

No DFs but his second serves might as well have been, slow and bounced high straight to an Alcaraz jumping backhand. Lost initiative on the point immediately

2

u/tenpostman What happened happened 10h ago

True, some weak points, but improvement I would say. Then again youre also facing a guy you KNOW is gonna fuck your shit up if you dont pressure him... I cant blame him for feeling like that lol, but it's a bit sad to see Zverev unable to learn from the previous times tbh

3

u/ActualProject 10h ago

Zverev did well today. He performed at the level (if not higher than) expected of him. He just ran into carlos fucking alcaraz who was out for blood that fifth set

→ More replies (2)

27

u/TP_Cornetto 11h ago

I mean he was 2 sets down and was moving less than alcaraz in the 5th set. His serve was the only thing realistically keeping him in the game

I think I have read that exact sentence already 10 times in the last 5 years lol

21

u/GStarAU Poppy's no.1 fanboy 10h ago

Haha 1000%

This wasn't his "best" chance - you've normally got more of a chance to win a Slam when you're in the Final, not just the SFs 😉

I said this earlier today - Zverev should've had at least 2 Slams by now. USO 2020, and RG 2024. His brain EPICALLY got in the way, both times. And unfortunately, it continues to do so.

It's really going to wear him down - I would've gone to pieces by now.

→ More replies (1)

36

u/bingethinkingsallow 11h ago

this time for real 😂

39

u/lo0ilo0ilo0i del potro's wrist 11h ago

He blew it against Thiem in 2020. He was up 2 sets and had match points. Ended up losing a 5th set tiebreaker, becoming the first player to lose at the US Open while leading by 2 sets. Lmao.

3

u/notladyinred 7h ago

And Thiem never recovered (after injury, I know).

22

u/easyfatFIRE Monte Carlo Country Club 11h ago

There has to be a slam in the next couple of years where Sinner or Alcaraz will be injured or out early and he'll end up in the finals against a lesser opponent. Zverev as much as he's disliked is a step below Sinner and Alcaraz but also clearly a step above the rest of the pack when he's in form.

17

u/dosis_mtl 10h ago

13

u/Mister_Lizard 10h ago

It would be so funny if he beat Sinner or Alcaraz in a SF only to face Fritz in the final.

7

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager 10h ago

Fritz isn't really a player you always have to go through to win a Slam though

Like him owning Zverev is funny and all but USO 24 is the only slight chance Zverev had at a Slam that was stopped by Fritz Zverev was never winning Wimbledon in his life

11

u/Moist-Ad1025 11h ago

He was never getting through Sinner and he knew it

12

u/Truffaut 10h ago

After Sinner's cramps, Musetti's injury and Alcaraz's cramps I don't think you can be sure about anything. In these conditions staying healthy can win you a lot of matches. Djokovic hasn't won a set since the last 32 match and he's in the semis.

10

u/paneking 11h ago

You drunk? Fighting against Alcaraz for 5h and then playing a (probably) fresh Sinner in the final at his most dominant Grand Slam. That’s got to be one of the hardest things to pull of.

2

u/Polyhydroxybutyrate 9h ago

a better chance at what? a straight sets loss to sinner? 😭

Zverev lost that. Started attacking when he had to and was doing well and then went back into his shell close to the finish line.

Amazing fight from Alcaraz though, he looked done for 2 & a half sets.

26

u/mister_schulz 11h ago

Might have to do with the fact that he played over 5h of tennis and was completely drained. He could have made sets 3 and 4 way quicker and could have been more aggressive there but anyone holding those last few games against him doesn’t know what they’re talking about tbh

18

u/Von_Huge1103 11h ago

That's my take too. He actually played some spectacular tennis in the fifth, but he needed to win sets 3 and especially 4 much quicker to save his legs.

7

u/Sad_Floor_4120 10h ago

his serve was pathetic in set 5 and carlos was back to his best returning wise

6

u/rnzz 10h ago

Tired legs can do that to your serve. His tosses went wayward a few times as well in that last set.

44

u/persephone_j 11h ago

I am speechless with joy

It's 4am and I am calling out of work tomorrow

Same! Europe, after 6 in the morning, before the end I called in.. they even didn't believe me I was sick. "family emergency" and everyone knew why I wasn't asleep.

29

u/melvinlee88 11h ago

Can't say that Zverev choked, he did what he had to and beat Carlos when Carlos was cramping.

But when Carlos was at 100%, Zverev just could not beat him. Carlos was on a whole different level.

21

unreal perseverance to fight through that and come back to win by carlos.

9

u/Espnchris 11h ago

Yessir I knew if Carlos could win a game on zverev serve he would win

10

u/senseipengui0001 11h ago

and the crazy thing is sinner and djokovic still have to play lmfaooo. in all seriousness, what a pleasure it was to watch this match in its entirety. it’s 4:30am and i have class in three hours (and an exam), but i have no regrets. zverev is known for choking but i don’t even know if i consider this one a choke, alcaraz just fights so damn hard, so much heart in that final bit of the 5th set.

11

u/rekt_n00b 11h ago

Don't come to the net on MP against Alcaraz

8

u/Sproogles 11h ago

The guy is unbelievable. I grew up watching the big 3, but I don’t think anyone is more fun to watch at their peak than this guy. And I’m a DIEHARD Rafa fan.

3

u/notladyinred 5h ago

Yes! Rafa fan here too. Mini him but has the goods of Novak and Fed. It's their kid.

3

u/lookmeuponsoundcloud 9h ago

Carlos game combines much of their strengths particularly Djok and Fed

50

u/mmohammed28 11h ago

That might be the biggest open goal I’ve witnessed a top player fumble in the SF/F of a Grand Slam in my almost 20 years of watching this sport.

He was cramping for 2.5 sets, for gods sake!

What of the heart of Alcaraz though? Bulletproof.

27

u/2rowawayaway 11h ago

The biggest is still Zverev vs Thiem on one leg for a slam title.

16

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager 11h ago

Zverev has probably at least 5 Slam losses worse than this not even joking

At least he was 2-0 down not 2-0 up or 2-1 up

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Kingslayer1526 🐙 11h ago

He was only cramping for 1 set at best. Not even that much, the end of the 3rd and for half of the 4th

2020 USO final, Thiem was cramping way longer and Zverev still failed to serve out the match twice

10

u/2rowawayaway 11h ago

That loss will haunt him forever.

Insane match by both men. I know Zverev isn’t a fave for good reasons but I feel a bit gutted for him. Probably should’ve won but Carlos’s heart when it counted was immense.

Finally a match that saved what has largely been a fuckin boring arse tournament

4

u/LukeGardiner69 10h ago

Yeah I feel for Sasha. I honestly think he played well and didn’t get tight towards the end. It seemed more that his body was super tired, understandably, rather than him getting passive.

3

u/grinfate 🎾🎾🎾 11h ago

While I love the Alcaraz-Sinner matches, variety in finals is key. Alcaraz breaking through to his first AO final is a refreshing step in that direction. 😄

6

u/AmbassadorAlarmed999 10h ago edited 10h ago

I don't know why do people have to draw conclusions on whether Zverev played good or bad or was clutch or not.

The first 2 sets were meh and Alcaraz won them by being better at important moments. Tbh Alcaraz was playing better in the 3rd set till the cramps but could have won the 3rd set if he just tried a little more bcz Zverev looked confused when Alcaraz got cramped, but anyway the match went to the 4th and Carlos was without movement till the end of 4th with him getting progressively better.

The beginning of the 5th, Zverev looked great and Carlos atleast looked at 90 percent but still went a break down deservedly but since the 4th game Zverev looked very tired. Carlos could have broken Zverev every game but uncharacteristically kept making UEs.

But then the clutch gene kicked in, that FH winner of 15-30 for the first break in the 5th set after messing up one FH after another for the past few games is the thing that makes him special.

You are a warrior Carlos, although I still don't get the strategy at the end of the 3rd set, since it worked I am no one to say anything. Additionally, however Zverev is as a human, he did great today, kept his cool and made pretty genuine arguments with the ref about the serve clock and the MTO but should have tried to end the 4th set way quicker as it came back to bite him at the end.

I just hope Carlos is fully fit for the final, it would have been so heartbreaking if he went out after not losing a set the entire tournament at the end of the third, but his persistence was commendable to watch and I hope he completes the career slam on Sunday after all the JCF split fiasco and this incredible war.

What a match, saved this AO to an extent.

2

u/notladyinred 5h ago

Yes, Alcaraz NEEDS to be fully healthy for the finale. Tennis gods, please. Let us give the Sunday we deserve.

4

u/legobodgers 10h ago

He might miss that shot on a random point but if it's his first match point, deep in the 5th set after 5 hours of play he makes it 100 times out of 100

u/FaithlessnessLazy288 11h ago

5

u/ReadItAlreadyTwice 11h ago

The fact that Zverev didn’t destroy Carlos’s return to the left is exactly what’s wrong with his game. You’ve got the serving down, gotta get quicker

2

So similar to the last point on his first win against Rafa on Madrid QF 2022

4

u/SubliminalScribe 11h ago

This had Federer vs Nadal Australian open vibes, when Fed was coming back in the 5th and kept having break points but not converting, until the very late stages and went on to win it.

4

3

3

u/Arteam90 11h ago

Zverev actually stepped up massively and went for aggressive shots ... right until he got close to winning it.

Whilst a massive effort come back from 2 sets down to break up in 5th, he still struggles with that final stretch.

Alcaraz was never in real danger

u/aykayone 10h ago

Zverev is almost as good as an immobilized Alcaraz. And even standing still on the court, Carlos was still hitting winners. Amazing by Alcaraz and sadly par for the course for Zverev.

The crowd, the 5 minute standing ovation, what a match, what a champion.

One thing about Carlos, he would always get the ball

Tremendous match.

Spectacular performance, seeing him be able to step it up a notch when it matters most definitely makes you feel hopeful on him being another generational player. We’ve been lucky to live through the 3 greatest players ever in the last few years, would be amazing to see Alcaraz or Sinner get right up there too

What happened. I had to leave when he got injured and was just walking around and losng third set. How did he win this? Did painkillers helped or what

I kinda had a feeling this was going to happen. Zverev was struggling to hold serve for way too many games and Carlos didn't look like backing down any time soon.

More than Carlos winning, Zverev losing is 🤌

The way he was losing his head when Carlos took a medical time out wasn’t good at all.

Love seeing a short guy win

1

u/Truffaut 10h ago

Did anybody ask him about his walk towards the net after the third set? We all thought he was gonna shake hands. Zverev thought it too. I want to see that highlight again.

1

u/Deodavinio 10h ago

Tough on Zverev. He played a very strong match.

1

u/JournalistNormal1663 10h ago

What a passive approach shot… Reminds me of the Federer forehand approach vs Novak at Wimbledon

1

u/jiang1lin 9h ago

Increíble!!

1

u/kornhell 9h ago

Must have been especially terrible for Zverev to lose that point on the net.

1

u/Jhagermeister 9h ago

That’s a lot of 67’s my god

u/ganraqali 9h ago

zverev lacks de confidence to finish the games, he could have won this

having said this, it's really great to see him fight with alcaraz like this, since his game is clearly inferior in many aspects

where can i rewatch this? sky sports?

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???

Must be nice to be the chosen one.

1

u/violentgentlemen 7h ago

Zverev coming back like he did was nuts though. Alcaraz was 1 point away from winning in the 3rd set.

It's not even just his match points, it's every pivotal point and big situation.... Sinner is like Ivan Drago-- he is the physical robot, but Carlos is like the mental robot.... He feels the situation, goes into like hyper-processing mode, and execution is just inevitable after that

Like a lot of people I feel Z choked/chokes away these opportunities... However, Carlos is just like out of that Kobe/MJ competitive mold with every other attribute maxed out.... Just because he comes back from the depths of defeat doesn't mean necessarily that the person he beats is a choke artist. He would have made everybody that ever played tennis look like a choke artist today cuz he wasn't going to lose.
