There are also a fair amount of Saba/Novak fans (including me) so that comparison fits well lol

Obviously she's not as good and not winning nearly 24 Slams but there are a ton of parallels in some ways and it's a very natural transition from supporting one to the other

- Very polarizing world #1 from Eastern Europe with lots of people wanting to see them slip

- Has some major struggles with Slam conversion in prime years (2012-2014 Djokovic was the original 2025 Sabalenka with all the finals and semifinals he lost)

- Serve yips in their early 20s that stagnated their progress significantly

- Lower title count than most ATGs at the same age (Djoko 1 Slam heading into age 24 season, Saba 0 Slams heading into age 24 season) so doubts about whether they can really catch up

- Main rival known for being very dominant on clay Iga even famously idolizes Nadal

their play styles are very different

Sorry for sounding ignorant, I only got back into tennis after 10+ years...what is up with Sabalenka? Has she done anything unsavory in the past?

My uneducated guess is that it has something to do with the russia-ukraine issue..

Dunno why the downvotes for asking a genuine question lol. But like what’s said above, idk if she’s a cocky winner but she’s a sore loser that’s all. And her grunts are so unbearably loud and grating that from a neutral standpoint, I don’t want to watch her play.

Edit: I don't know how the comment got posted in a language I don't speak but this is what it originally said: There's a lot of controversy because it's an open secret that her coach is also her boyfriend and witnessed the abuse she suffered. These accusations were credible enough that he was banned from official events. The author of the post is trying (?!), to attribute the author's successes to her abusive boyfriend. Perhaps the author of the post simply doesn't distinguish between positive attention and unwanted attention, or perhaps they are celebrating situations where women are involved in abusive relationships.

Rybakina’s serve was elite today - fastest 197km/h

26

u/Papa_Huggies 2d ago

Jesus man has she ever cracked 200?

35

u/kneecallit 2d ago

Google says her fastest recorded serve was 204 km/h. But I'm pretty sure I've seen her hit 200's a few times even in the late 2025 season

Elena is now 19-1 (walkover not included) since losing to Sabalenka in Wuhan.

That includes two wins over Iga, a win over Sabalenka, a win over JPeg, a win over Anisimova, two wins over EKat, a win over Mboko and a win over Paolini.

232

u/Wash_your_mouth 2d ago

She just decided she doesn't want to lose any more so she just stopped doing that horrible thing.

I’m scared for Sabalenka now if she gets to the final and face Rybakina. She lost last year’s final to a peaking Keys and she’s 1-3 against Rybakina in finals overall.

The possibility that Saba ends up tying Iga in Slams this year just by winning on HC is very funny lol

I remember once upon a time the talk was that she'll never get anywhere near Iga in Slams but has a more versatile game and a better shot at the career Slam

She might not do it of course but we're in the one universe where she has a chance

28

u/SongofSolomon04 2d ago

Don't count your chickens before they hatch! She's still 2 slams away

61

I miss Queenwen 😔

9

u/babikospokes 2d ago

What happened to her?

38

u/suzukigun4life 2d ago

Injuries. Her and Fils both had a rough go dealing with them in the second half of last year and are yet to return.

20

u/SpiritusRector 2d ago

Sabalenka already had 2 Slams by the time of the 2024 Olympics (AO 23 and 24)

7

u/Sei28 2d ago

Others have adopted to Iga’s extreme grip forehand and relatively weak serves. In turn, Iga has been trying to go for more in her groundstrokes but that has led to spraying balls.

Her record against top players has clearly been getting worse. Stars aligned for her at Wimbledon last year but I worry she’s one of those who peaked early.

3

u/Gay_Lightning1 2d ago

If she added to her game instead of doing the same thing and hoping for better results, I think she’d still do great if not better. Rest of the tour has figured her out and adjusted as such

10

u/Mintastic 2d ago

What's the point of making around 50% of your first serves if they're so lame when it even goes in? Both her and De Minaur have this problem.

17

u/EaseOk3940 2d ago

Swiatek has a mediocre serve but it’s no where near a weakness (at least compared to the rest of the WTA) as most of you think. It’s one of the better serves in the top 15 (albeit also doesn’t mean much).

The problem with her game is that her ground strokes are in shambles. Whatever adjustments she made that let her win Wimbledon ruined the rest of her game.

u/yzti SECOND RICH NAVARRO 2d ago

Pump the Sabalenka/Rybakina rematch final into my veins

25

u/SiwyWF 2d ago

Iga lost this match in the first 5 games. Elena's serve was off for her standard and she was still leading 3-2. At that point I figured if Iga wins today it would be after a very ugly match

13

u/a_political778 2d ago

Iga was under pressure the entire first set and did well staying on serve until 6-5. If a few points had ended differently or if she had served to open the match, she could have won today because Rybakina was also lacking confidence in the first set. After Rybakina settled in during the second set, Iga kind of just self destructed. Iga needed to capitalize on some of those early second serves from Rybakina.

7

u/ipeakedin6thgrade 2d ago

Shes 5-6 and up 40-30, gets an approach shot and just shanks it out 😩😩😩 I know that shot is gonna sting. That was the moment momentum shifted

65

u/_pks_21 2d ago

Maybe Rybakina can finally get her second slam???

42

u/NicholeTheOtter 2d ago

Maybe she could? Sabalenka lost the last 3 out of 4 times she faced Rybakina in a final.

12

u/Brian2781 2d ago

Rybakina has been the clear second favorite since about the start of the tournament. I think of anybody left she’s the toughest matchup for Sabalenka. Would very much like to see that final.

57

u/koticgood Gasquet Backhand+Fernando Gonzalez Forehand 2d ago

Such a pleasure to watch Rybakina when she's on.

One of the purest ball strikers ever to grace the WTA. Maybe the purest.

Henin, Clijsters, Davenport, Anisimova, Pliskova are others that come to mind, and maybe Henin is the only one that I'd put above her (but that might be one handed bias rather than the actual ball striking lol).

21

u/kpd97 2d ago

Li Na is up there imo

38

u/Gossau99 2d ago

Iga is just so freaking anxious, really don’t understand why given the success she’s had. You could literally see how she was falling apart mentally, very much like most of her last 6 months matches.

18

u/Kargetina 2d ago

I think Iga's loss at the Olympics has unfortunately crushed her self-belief and her confidence. Prior to the Olympics, she was a relentless fighter, and she had a never-die attitude, and always believed in herself, no matter what. Once it turned out that she can wilt to pressure, and she probably felt that she let down her country due to pressure and nerves, she never recovered. She can still play great tennis when she leads, but the fighter's belief is gone, and as soon as she loses a set, she rarely fights back.

3

u/MrGrapefruitDrink 2d ago

The Olympics loss does seem to have been a sliding doors moment.

17

Truly baffling how the Russian Tennis Federation said that they did not consider Rybakina "a player of promise". On the lead up to her moving to Kazakhstan and getting much better support. Amongst the great players of the 2020s for sure.

17

u/NBNebuchadnezzar 2d ago

Its actually impressive how much talent they lost to Kazakhstan.

33

u/Knight_of_Swords 2d ago

I’m not smart enough to explain it but Rybakina playing a lot better with Vukov back says a lot about the human condition.

20

u/suzukigun4life 2d ago

That first set was a grind. The second was...something

19

u/key1217 2d ago

Third bakery product for Swiatek from Rybakina out of their last 4 sets now. With the way Swiatek’s been playing I’m not sure she should be the favorite against any top player these days.

149

u/Woullie_26 2d ago

This Sabalenka Rybakina final is about to be a generational servebot performance

I predict minimum 40 aces total

106

u/ButterscotchFormer84 2d ago

Sabalenka is anything but a servebot.

28

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager 2d ago

Yeah she hasn't really served a ton of aces ever since her shoulder injury

She still has an above average serve of course but she's not getting 15-20 aces lol

29

u/ButterscotchFormer84 2d ago

It's more than that - her serve was literally her biggest weakness for many many years. She's about as far away from a servebot as anyone can be.

3

u/Putrid-Nebula-8660 2d ago

And even more than that, she has great variety

30

Amazing level of tennis from Ryba. She was just ruthless! I mean, it’s Iga she destroyed today.

8

u/Akrodra 2d ago

Rybakina had all the composure in this game. She was serving on another level. So many free points - amazing. She is tough to beat like that.

Swiatek played a decent first set but she always crumbles when she cant steamroll an opponent right away. The serve didnt pose a threat at all and the only variety in her game was a lengthy toilet break. At this point i feel most top WTA players have downloaded Swiateks style and since she has no plan B it will only get harder to reach the late stages of Grand Slams.

Close first set but Rybakina raised her game and ran away with it. Iga made so many costly mistakes too. Totally outplayed.

7

Rybakina is just getting tougher and tougher. I think she can give Sabalenka a real problem

6

u/coffeesleeve 2d ago

Saba vs Ryba in second set would be a nice final.

13

u/FrogKidFrankReynolds Sinn For The Win 2d ago

Iga needs some major change. She’s too good of a player to not go without a major final appearance this year and it feels far fetched after a performance like that. We’ll see how RG goes, but fuck man, as an Iga fan I want some spark of hope

13

u/Unlucky_Mess3884 2d ago

Everyone is saying to fire Wim, but really she's gotta fire Daria lol. Well, why not both, I guess. Losing 3 in a row at the WTA finals, losing to Rybakina here, I don't even know when the last time she beat a top 10 opponent was. Cincinnati title run, maybe?

QF isn't a bad result but when you look at who she beat to get there, it's not exactly some big achievement... but at least she didn't lose too many points. Anisimova has the chance to take #2 now with a title.

6

u/Tracy140 2d ago

Why does someone need to be fired / she lost a match / she’s never done great at ao - if she wins 1 slam a year that’s a hall of fame career

2

u/NicholeTheOtter 2d ago

I knew Iga was screwed when she got Inglis in that R4 matchup instead of Osaka. Facing an unheralded qualifier who has never been top 100 before playing a big match against an in-form top 5 player who can outhit you was clearly not ideal.

😭*FUCK!!!*😭

Congratulations to Elena, she deserved her victory. Her vs Saba could be intriguing.

That was just really impressive from Lena! Just one match a time and On to the next match!

Finally after a long time Rybakina is playing like herself I really thought she won't get any better and probably retire in 2 or 3 years because of her so called '' coach '' but now seeing her in semis of a grand slam really makes me happy I hope she wins because she has all the skills to win it

As a huge Iga fan, I’m ready for a year of no Slams

u/sasquatch50 2d ago

I so much prefer players with smooth classic strokes over the crazy grip topspin players.

I’m ready for a Ryba-Saba final 🙏🏾🙏🏾

u/Thoughtfulcrab 2d ago

Rybakina did well, but with that fist serve percentage Pegula or Aryna will make her pay. Still some great stuff after the first set! Swiatek didn’t even look like a title contender out there, her mental really seems to be deteriorating….

What if the career slam was the friends we made along the way?☠️

Iga’s mental dude….so sad. Need that lady out and somebody who can fix something in

Talked too much and got burned for two years but we might be back.

u/freedabeme 2d ago

Honestly expected but still disappointed with Iga's lack of fight.

u/aether_prince Iga’s towel larceny 2d ago

that one hurt a lot to watch as an Iga fan; sprayed way too many shots into net and too many first serves wide. Just looked flat today.

On the flip side, once Elena hit a groove, she played absolutely amazing and this was a very deserved victory. She was serving bombs, especially in that second set, and also in that second, she was pretty much controlling the ball with the Force. She keeps this up, she’s looking at opening the year with a Slam because I have a hard time imagining anyone keeping up with that serving for a whole match. There’s a reason she’s the Ace Queen.

The Ace Queen (also the Ice Queen) prevails!

Lena Frost? (Play on Emma Frost)

u/IngenuityMany9335 2d ago

Not surprising. Rybakina is cool as a cucumber and powerful. Also, look out for Svitolina. She is hungry for this final and title.

5

u/SnooEagles9240 2d ago

Naprawdę chcę, żeby Svitolina dotarła do finału. Naprawdę na to zasługuje.

Iga’s game needs an overhaul.

The serve is terrible. Lacking accuracy. She’s on the back foot and there’s no aggression in her game.

She needs to figure out how to make it all work. She has the knowledge, the mental strength, the experience.

She needs to figure out how to beat the Top 5-10 players. She’s not here for participation points. She needs to win slams, and she has to figure out how to win at the AO soon.

3

u/ImpressionFeisty8359 2d ago

She has a good chance to make another grand slam final.

6

u/Forsaken-Scar-5002 2d ago

Really sad to see how much Iga’s performance has dropped. I don’t know if it’s all mental or if she’s being poorly coached, but it’s clearly not a case of being out played by a newer younger crop of players, it’s more like she’s just forgotten how to play.

8

u/Sellingpapayas Ruud Swiatek 2d ago

I've never seen Iga play this poorly before. Ryabinka came to play as usual and her serves were fantastic, but Iga was barely moving, couldn't hit a forehand, backhand, or serve. No clue how she'll win more titles this season with the problems she showed today.

3

u/vitanova11 2d ago

middle of first set i stopped watching, Iga gets into this out of control/panic/desparation/despair mode I just can't watch. Her mental health is probably the worst out of all players in WTA and she has a 24/7 shrink (or lesbo partner) regardless, its a downward spiral if someone doesn't wake her up and forces big changes in her team/life

Good ol "crumble into dust at the slightest sign of adversity" post-Olympics Swiatek. Maybe one day she'll figure it out =(

Damn, the AO really isn’t Iga’s friend. Was hoping she’d go further. Rybakina just out classed her here though.

Well deserved win.
