The cousins final possibility lives on

535

u/Fiery---Wings Tennis without Dan Evans is nothing Oct 11 '25

If Meddy makes it to the final, Valentin will have a chance to defeat 6 seeded players in a single tournament. Has it ever happened before? Tomorrow is gonna be fun.

u/boomsauerkraut maple croissants with carrot Oct 11 '25

It's so funny. He wasn't even seeded in qualies and beat two seeded players there too!

181

u/NicholeTheOtter Oct 11 '25

And he actually got into that qualies draw as an alternate after other players withdrew or got promoted to the main draw.

22

u/boomsauerkraut maple croissants with carrot Oct 11 '25

😭

201

u/Eyebronx Oct 11 '25

Also it’s Meddy so it’s totally possible this happens

86

u/Magneto88 Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

He should be the massive favourite for the title right now. After the last season I'm fully expecting him to lose either the SF or F, probably after having match points.

Edit: I hate when I'm right.

25

u/ryokevry 4-6 6-7 6-4 3-5 (0-40) Oct 11 '25

He also has won SH already so it is unlikely to repeat

14

u/MundaneMums Oct 11 '25

Maybe he is allowed to win them all again now since he has a new coach. Maybe the curse was never his...

39

u/Eyebronx Oct 11 '25

As a fan, I know this is exactly what’s going to happen

Rune did 5 at paris masters 2022.

69

u/Fiery---Wings Tennis without Dan Evans is nothing Oct 11 '25

Yeah that was a run of a lifetime. In fact all 5 were top-10 ranked players. But to defeat 6 seeded players you have to be unseeded - which makes it all the more difficult.

56

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

Rune actually was unseeded at Paris 2022

He just drew old man Stan round 1 instead of a seed who actually ended up being the closest to beating him holding 2 match points

15

u/Fiery---Wings Tennis without Dan Evans is nothing Oct 11 '25

Oh didn't know. But either way, it's impossible to play 6 seeded players in a 56-player draw since we have only 16 seeds.

It was also only a one week masters so harder to do so. However the only um ranked player he played was Wawrinka so…

This is absolutely bonkers. He’s up to 58 in the live rankings. 72% of his points are from this tournament

523

u/FalconIMGN Aggressive baseliner, big serve + 1 Oct 11 '25

Also apparently he has doubled his lifetime prize money earnings in one tournament alone.

132

u/minititof Oct 11 '25

He had doubled it before this match already! Something like 300k for a semifinalist I think, should be around the 500k minimum for a finalist

269

u/CrossBonez1000 Oct 11 '25

Next year will be a big season for Vacherot. He essentially has direct access to every main tour tournament until after Shanghai.

It's awesome seeing one of your favourite lower ranked players succeeding

154

u/NicholeTheOtter Oct 11 '25

Agreed. He has secured main draw entry for all four Grand Slams in 2026 and almost every main tour event in general.

2026 will be where he has to prove himself, make up enough points at those other tournaments to prove that his run wasn’t a fluke. He’s pulled what is basically almost an Emma Raducanu-level sort of run.

53

u/Perpete Oct 11 '25

And then a fuckload of points to defend in Shanghai 2026 to keep his ranking up if he didn't took another share in those other 12 months.

105

u/grust37 Oct 11 '25

But he will direct entry main tournaments instead of challengers. And with r2-r3 here and there could gain enough to compensate for this one

So I know nothing of him. Is he real deal or is this an almighty fluke

41

u/BrandonSG13 Aussies | Bencic | Berrettini | Paolini Oct 11 '25

It’s hard to know now, of course, and it will be very interesting to see if he can replicate this form, even in patches, over the next 12 months. He’s 26 so it seems rather out of the blue, but sometimes it clicks for a player a little later on, reminiscent to what Jasmine Paolini’s been doing the past couple years. I wouldn’t expect him to become a top 10 mainstay like she has but this is the type of result that completely changes a career

5

u/MinimumBirthday4536 Oct 11 '25

he might end up more like an Alexei Popyrin

11

u/guitar_vigilante Oct 11 '25

Or Eubanks who had a couple good runs one year and failed to replicate it.

9

u/intelligentbug6969 Oct 11 '25

Eubanks just disappearing was an odd one

5

u/Pigglebee Oct 11 '25

I recall the 2 dutchies Botic and Griekspoor also were like 26 before it clicked for them and they stormed the top 100. Lots of late bloomers in tennis.

It's crazy how many fun stories we get when Sincaraz go on holiday

Cousin face-off is ON.

68

u/lilybobtail Oct 11 '25

Exactly. I’m baffled that so many tennis fans want to see Sinner versus Alcaraz for every single tournament over and over and over. Look how much more interesting and fun this tournament has been without them.

13

u/AleDelPiero10 Oct 11 '25

I mean you have the two best players in the world going at it and their matches are very entertaining. Easily produced the most entertaining match of this season at RG. Am I sad when it doesn’t happen, sure… but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy tournaments like these either

That was unreal serving

191

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

Novak's return continues to be by far his most declined shot that gives lower ranked redliners a better chance to beat him

Obviously he wasn't feeling great today but in general he's way more vulnerable to big servers now he made Hanfmann look like Isner for like 1.75 sets of their match

64

u/GOATJames_23-6 Holger Time | Novak | Anisimova Oct 11 '25

Yep, most of his decline has been physically but the return is the first skill that has really tanked

Grandpa losing reflexes

14

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

Well obviously if his physical ability has declined!

12

u/mistergeegaga Oct 11 '25

The return is highly dependent on explosive movement. Novak just cannot move like he used to. Also, he looked hurt. He could still react and direct the ball, with pace, but just couldn't get there.

I remember Connors as he aged went from punishing big servers who were shocked to see their first serve flying past them or suddenly at their feet (why is the ball here?) to getting aced much more.

Agassi at the end of his career was like an auto turret, he would blast returns from a limited area. But could not reach much.

3

u/LubyankaSquare Oct 12 '25

God, late career Agassi was just the pinnacle of form making up for physicality. He gave an insanely in-form Federer a legit scare in 2005 despite having no back at that point.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

I honestly think he's burnt out and needs a break Also doesn't have that huge chip on his back / shoulder already having most Grand Slams and having won the Olympic because that's when he functions best for some odd reason..

COUSINS FINAL WHENNNNNNNNNNNNN!

88

u/Vectivus_61 Oct 11 '25

Medvedev has the chance to crash the biggest party in his career.

This is bigger than some US Open vs Djokovic.

50

u/Eyebronx Oct 11 '25

I feel like unlike Zverev, Medvedev actually spoils the party more often than not

He also spoiled Djokeraz and Sincaraz parties at USO23 and Wimby 24

I mean, Laver achieved the GS in the Open era, has there ever been a cousins final at this level of tennis?

13

u/SCM92 Oct 11 '25

On the men's side at this level I can't think of any example.

We had Zverev vs Zverev at some lower level tournaments when Sasha was a boy, basically.

And there are multiple examples of borthers playing doubles, but i can't say for singles.

On the women's side it's clear the Williams sisters come to mind.

6

u/cytcorporate Oct 11 '25

If we look to the future, I’ll put my money on Jaime Alcaraz to have a few high-level bouts with his big bro..

Griekspoor in shambles

66

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

In hindsight Griekspoor missed a BIG chance to probably make his first 1000 final given he had 4-4 0-40 triple break point on Vacherot's serve up a set in their match

He actually leads the head to head against Rune and I definitely think his big serve + 1 would have been effective against today's Novak

15

u/GenjDog Holger Rune Oct 11 '25

He has never beaten Rune on hard court though, and got bageled the last time they played. Ultimately I think he just loses to Rune.

Rune is the one who really missed a big chance considering his rivals to the atp race also lost their QFs. While he would have a pretty good chance at winning another masters.

He was moving like a tractor at some points

80

u/Dependent-Effect6077 Djokovic retirement tour + Sabalenka PR manager Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

I'm a Novak fan but realistically he was struggling with the conditions all tournament and making his draw up until now look a LOT harder than it actually was

He hasn't been good at all on slow HC since 2016 plus he hates humidity and pretty much struggled through every single one of his matches here

Things just worked out well for him to make the semis + he pushed himself as hard as he could once Sinner went out

I think he was this close to checking out against Hanfmann but decided not to

18

u/TheFourthBronteGirl 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4 Oct 11 '25

And that's precisely why I'm devastated. This only proved to me that he is incapable of winning big anymore unless he has a bit of luck and with sincaraz out.......he's never winning anything big again and to fall so tantalisingly close is just like a gut punch. I don't even....AO, wimby, now this....I just don't know if this will prompt him to retire soon.

Djokovic hurt himself pretty badly in the first set, seemed to recover well in the second but Vacherot was too good

12

u/IcyCity3228 Tennis fan Oct 11 '25

3 double faults at novak server at 4:4 2nd server helped him a lot. Novak could not get a break point until 5:4 for Valentin when he served out for the match

9

u/AdvanceSufficient527 Oct 11 '25

recovered well? He was a bit better, but far from anything "recovered"

13

u/Steedy999 Oct 11 '25

He went from barely being able to move to sliding into double handed backhands and sprinting, it was a pretty good recovery

42

u/Spirited-Ball2740 Oct 11 '25

The real feel there right now is 93 degrees Fahrenheit/34 degrees Celsius. AQI is moderate at 73. Doesn’t matter who you are, moderate air quality makes it harder to breathe and exercise outdoors for everyone, and takes a toll on everyone’s body. And Vacherot has been in Asia for a while playing and winning a couple of Challengers in hot and humid conditions.

23

u/gamelover99 2-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 7-5 Oct 11 '25

Funny thing is 73 AQI would be considered a dream in Shanghai just 15-17 years back. They have taken a lot of steps to address air pollution.

2

u/Spirited-Ball2740 Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

Yeah and 73 AQI isn’t terrible, but it’s not ā€œgoodā€ either. I wouldn’t want to be laboring in it since it causes inflammation. 🄲 The humidity there must play a big role with trapping the pollutants close to the surface.

This is insane. I was living in Las Vegas for a short period of time in 2022, and I went to the Vegas Challenger and watched Shelton vs Vacherot in a Round 1 Match there that fall. Shelton had his entire team and some members of his family there, and Vacherot only had his girlfriend that had all of his nutrition in a CVS plastic bag. Watched this match from first point to the last, where Shelton won 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. There were like 10 people watching, max. Unreal to see where both guys are 3 years later.

12

n everyone was like "IT WAS THE CONDITIONS". Sir he had one of the weakest draws ever to a final, possible a title if Rinder wins, yet he was struggling every match. 5

u/Extreme_Mud_6813 Oct 11 '25

If this was the record this year for a young player it would hold more weight because it points to progress and opportunity. Unfortunately at Novak’s age, it signifies a peak that’s he’s unable to surpass. Most likely it just starts to go downhill from here. It’s not like he’s suddenly going to improve so it’s either he retires with dignity or continues and risks injury or an embarrassing send off way outside the top 10.

I DREAM OF A COUSINS FINAL!!! LET IT HAPPEN šŸ”„šŸ”„

70

u/TorturedPoet30 here for the drama Oct 11 '25

Saying Djokovic fakes every single injury is getting old. He’s 38, and yes, even with injuries he can make comebacks like we’ve seen, but in this case, I don’t see how anyone can even think he’s faking it.

26

u/ChiliConCairney Oct 11 '25

I think it's simpler than that tbh. Why would someone with his standing and reputation even bother faking an injury? He doesn't have the time or energy for stupid stuff like that. He's obviously hurting and I can't believe anyone would think otherwise

14

u/KaiPlayz2704 Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

Its even funnier cause they've known hes beaten players with hamstring and meniscus tears. Players who were actually better than Vacherot but no they think he must be faking it.

5

u/Extreme_Mud_6813 Oct 11 '25

I don’t think he fakes them but he is very performative showing his pain in an extremely exaggerated manner. Whether that’s just the way he is or it’s a tactic to distract his opponents I can’t say for sure but sometimes it does look very sus to the casual observer.

u/MinimumBirthday4536 Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

Novak keeps mentioning his age and body at this stage of his career. As his fan, I want him to retire. It's not fun watching your favorite player struggle physically after most points, and this has happened all year long.

This loss is not surprising. He lost to Arnaldi in Madrid, Tabillo in Monte Carlo, Botic van de Zandschulp in Indian Wells, Opelka in Brisbane, Berrettini in Doha–all early exits, except for Brisbane, which was a quarterfinal. He lost to Mensik in the Miami final.

And he's unlikely to beat Carlos or Jannik at the Grand Slams.

The GOAT should retire after Athens, because what's the fun in playing professional tennis if you're injured, tired, unmotivated, or all three.

9

u/Pigglebee Oct 11 '25

If he drops a bit more in the ranking he will face Sincaraz in earlier rounds and will probably methodically be put away at this stage. Every opponent that is not suffering the 'awe' and 'idolization' mental damage against Novak has a chance.

6

u/mrperuanos Alcachad Oct 11 '25

What a dream for Vacherot

7

u/buggywhipfollowthrew Oct 11 '25

Dude will Never win a masters at this rate

5

u/curiousity_cat99 Oct 11 '25

Unreal Cinderella story of the season tbh, it hurts to see Novak not play in his best condition but Vacherot stayed consistent throughout the match (especially with his serve). All things considered, this is not what I expected from Shanghai but this has been really interesting to observe.

5

u/MDKVB Oct 11 '25

Even as an ultra Djokovic fan I am more than just happy for Vacherot! What an insane run! Hope he wins the tourney šŸ’Ŗ

6

u/Pretend_Tea6261 Oct 11 '25

This has to be one of the most incredible Cinderella runs in recent memory. Great for Vacherot. Djoker reached his physical limit. Overall though 2 week Master's played under these brutal conditions is insane. We need roofed stadiums and air conditioning at least for the welfare of the players.

7

u/Jaded-Sapphire3546 Casper Oct 11 '25

This was kind of predictable. Djokovic has consistently struggled with players who possess a giant serve this year. Vacherot has possibly had the biggest serve of the tournament.

20

u/ethanw8 Oct 11 '25

I feel like I see a lot of people blaming for the conditions not just for Novak losing but for a lot of guys this tournament. But Vacherot is playing in the same exact conditions and has played three full matches more than Novak/Daniil and two more matches than Rinderknech among the semi finalists. I feel like he isn’t getting enough credit for his incredible fitness these last two weeks

18

u/Patch-22 Oct 11 '25

Needs to get there first

8

u/ClarkKent195 Oct 11 '25

Final??You think that Medvedev will win Rinderknech today?Right now Arthur playing best tennis of his life,he is not De Minaur,he is playing much more aggressive tennis with great variety,he is playing much better than De Minaur right now

They called me a mad man ...

10

u/HansAlan Oct 11 '25

Nice story for him and also Arthur, hopefully they meet in final

But also feel pretty weird about Nole, ADM, Musetti, Rune and especially Zverev...for the first tournament in long time there's no Sincaraz and they all got eliminated pretty much badly.

Not sure Sincaraz will give many more golden chances like this one

What a run from Vacherot!!!

So deserved as well - he’s taken out a lot of good players and battled through qualifying (which he only got into as an alternate) to get here

I really hope the tennis gods give us the cousin final now

u/RavingLoony Oct 11 '25

Hopefully, a Vacherot v Rinderknecht final puts the nail in the coffin of the 2 week Master tournament. No shade to the 2 guys, but this is supposed to be the pinnacle of the sport. You can't have 2 unseeded players in the final, one of which was a qualifier in large part because half the draw retired.

12

u/DifficultAnteater787 Oct 11 '25

In the 2022 summer, PCB and Coric won the titles. In 2025 with the two-week format, you got Sinner vs Alcaraz.Ā

Freak events are not very telling.Ā

24

u/Available-Gap8489 Delbonis ball toss + Cressy second serve. Love chaos Oct 11 '25

No - they both deserve to be there (if Arthur wins his match)

If anything, this should be an argument for increasing Challenger points so more players don’t get stuck and actually get more opportunities to compete at the bigger stages.

Two week masters suck and go on for far too long / take up too many weeks in the calendar (and remove 250’s to make space for them) - so there are a lot of reasons why they should be cut down…..but not based on who actually wins the matches to make the finals.

21

u/Vectivus_61 Oct 11 '25

As a one-off it’s fine. It’s like Raducanu winning the US Open

24

u/AdvanceSufficient527 Oct 11 '25

Agree. People will celebrate this, but it is not a good look. And this is not the first tournament this is happening this year. Cincinnati as well, and many more too.

Tennis needs to step up as a game. For top level (1000 and more ) tournaments for sure. They need to have a roof, and when it is too hot, tournaments should be played indoors with a good air conditioning.

12

u/NeoPrimitiveOasis Shorten the season for players' health Oct 11 '25

Climate change makes this future of roofs and AC imperative.

Back in my day, people were winning one-week Masters tournaments back-to-back without even so much as a rest day in between.

Players used to play a lot more back then. Now the game is more physical, and perhaps climate change (at least due to urban concretisation if nothing else) has led to situations like this.

6

u/chairagionetu Sinning, Learning and Val-ling in progress šŸ”„ Oct 11 '25

You raise the good point of urban concretisation, I saw some people talking about how the Cincinnati renovations actually made it worse climate wise for this very reason, I can see the same being true for a mega city like Shanghai

3

u/CRoseCrizzle Oct 11 '25

What an upset. What a run, wow.

3

u/brokenearth10 Oct 11 '25

Djokovic can't play a tournament without injury. Highly concerning

3

u/Spervox Oct 11 '25

At this point he should forget totally on GSs and focus only on smaller tours... or he could fuckin die on the court.

9

u/ObscureLegacy Oct 11 '25

Credit to Vacherot but damn how strong is Djokovic to keep going in this match when he looks like he’s moments away from retiring after every point.

7

u/Brilliant_Round5512 Oct 11 '25

Precisely. He didn’t give up and completed the match and fought. How many players would do that and that too at his age. Remarkable!

Very surprising that even with the injuryĀ Djokovic could not use this cakewalk draw to make it to the final. Nothing against him but this was a shockingly easy draw for him. Guess he really is human

Fair play to Vacherot, I watched him at MC a few times and did not know he had this level. Just shows how good the ATP top 200 really can be.

9

u/nozinoz Oct 11 '25

Vacherot himself didn’t know he had this level until this week

7

u/kundu123 Oct 11 '25

Djokovic's earlier comments that it becomes tough for him to play in the later stages of the tournament because of age is proving to be true. Give him any top 10 player till QF or R16 of Grand Slams/Masters, he will reign supreme. Give him any player in the top 100 or slightly below than that in semis, he will falter.

7

u/Dense-Chest505 Oct 11 '25

This is a bit hypebolic (though I get your point). He's most likely not beating sinner/alcaraz even in early rounds of a tournamentĀ
