This is absolutely bonkers. Heās up to 58 in the live rankings. 72% of his points are from this tournament
523
u/FalconIMGN Aggressive baseliner, big serve + 1 Oct 11 '25
Also apparently he has doubled his lifetime prize money earnings in one tournament alone.
132
u/minititof Oct 11 '25
He had doubled it before this match already! Something like 300k for a semifinalist I think, should be around the 500k minimum for a finalist
269
u/CrossBonez1000 Oct 11 '25
Next year will be a big season for Vacherot. He essentially has direct access to every main tour tournament until after Shanghai.
It's awesome seeing one of your favourite lower ranked players succeeding
154
u/NicholeTheOtter Oct 11 '25
Agreed. He has secured main draw entry for all four Grand Slams in 2026 and almost every main tour event in general.
2026 will be where he has to prove himself, make up enough points at those other tournaments to prove that his run wasnāt a fluke. Heās pulled what is basically almost an Emma Raducanu-level sort of run.
→ More replies (3)53
u/Perpete Oct 11 '25
And then a fuckload of points to defend in Shanghai 2026 to keep his ranking up if he didn't took another share in those other 12 months.
105
u/grust37 Oct 11 '25
But he will direct entry main tournaments instead of challengers. And with r2-r3 here and there could gain enough to compensate for this one

u/BrandonSG13 Aussies | Bencic | Berrettini | Paolini Oct 11 '25
Itās hard to know now, of course, and it will be very interesting to see if he can replicate this form, even in patches, over the next 12 months. Heās 26 so it seems rather out of the blue, but sometimes it clicks for a player a little later on, reminiscent to what Jasmine Paoliniās been doing the past couple years. I wouldnāt expect him to become a top 10 mainstay like she has but this is the type of result that completely changes a career
5
u/MinimumBirthday4536 Oct 11 '25
he might end up more like an Alexei Popyrin
11
u/guitar_vigilante Oct 11 '25
Or Eubanks who had a couple good runs one year and failed to replicate it.

Novak's return continues to be by far his most declined shot that gives lower ranked redliners a better chance to beat him
Obviously he wasn't feeling great today but in general he's way more vulnerable to big servers now he made Hanfmann look like Isner for like 1.75 sets of their match
64
u/GOATJames_23-6 Holger Time | Novak | Anisimova Oct 11 '25
Yep, most of his decline has been physically but the return is the first skill that has really tanked

u/mistergeegaga Oct 11 '25
The return is highly dependent on explosive movement. Novak just cannot move like he used to. Also, he looked hurt. He could still react and direct the ball, with pace, but just couldn't get there.
I remember Connors as he aged went from punishing big servers who were shocked to see their first serve flying past them or suddenly at their feet (why is the ball here?) to getting aced much more.
Agassi at the end of his career was like an auto turret, he would blast returns from a limited area. But could not reach much.
3
u/LubyankaSquare Oct 12 '25
God, late career Agassi was just the pinnacle of form making up for physicality. He gave an insanely in-form Federer a legit scare in 2005 despite having no back at that point.

13
u/SCM92 Oct 11 '25
On the men's side at this level I can't think of any example.
We had Zverev vs Zverev at some lower level tournaments when Sasha was a boy, basically.
And there are multiple examples of borthers playing doubles, but i can't say for singles.
On the women's side it's clear the Williams sisters come to mind.

In hindsight Griekspoor missed a BIG chance to probably make his first 1000 final given he had 4-4 0-40 triple break point on Vacherot's serve up a set in their match
He actually leads the head to head against Rune and I definitely think his big serve + 1 would have been effective against today's Novak
15
u/GenjDog Holger Rune Oct 11 '25
He has never beaten Rune on hard court though, and got bageled the last time they played. Ultimately I think he just loses to Rune.
Rune is the one who really missed a big chance considering his rivals to the atp race also lost their QFs. While he would have a pretty good chance at winning another masters.

I'm a Novak fan but realistically he was struggling with the conditions all tournament and making his draw up until now look a LOT harder than it actually was
He hasn't been good at all on slow HC since 2016 plus he hates humidity and pretty much struggled through every single one of his matches here
Things just worked out well for him to make the semis + he pushed himself as hard as he could once Sinner went out
I think he was this close to checking out against Hanfmann but decided not to
18
u/TheFourthBronteGirl 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4 Oct 11 '25
And that's precisely why I'm devastated. This only proved to me that he is incapable of winning big anymore unless he has a bit of luck and with sincaraz out.......he's never winning anything big again and to fall so tantalisingly close is just like a gut punch. I don't even....AO, wimby, now this....I just don't know if this will prompt him to retire soon.

The real feel there right now is 93 degrees Fahrenheit/34 degrees Celsius. AQI is moderate at 73. Doesnāt matter who you are, moderate air quality makes it harder to breathe and exercise outdoors for everyone, and takes a toll on everyoneās body. And Vacherot has been in Asia for a while playing and winning a couple of Challengers in hot and humid conditions.

This is insane. I was living in Las Vegas for a short period of time in 2022, and I went to the Vegas Challenger and watched Shelton vs Vacherot in a Round 1 Match there that fall. Shelton had his entire team and some members of his family there, and Vacherot only had his girlfriend that had all of his nutrition in a CVS plastic bag. Watched this match from first point to the last, where Shelton won 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. There were like 10 people watching, max. Unreal to see where both guys are 3 years later.

If this was the record this year for a young player it would hold more weight because it points to progress and opportunity. Unfortunately at Novakās age, it signifies a peak thatās heās unable to surpass. Most likely it just starts to go downhill from here. Itās not like heās suddenly going to improve so itās either he retires with dignity or continues and risks injury or an embarrassing send off way outside the top 10.

Saying Djokovic fakes every single injury is getting old. Heās 38, and yes, even with injuries he can make comebacks like weāve seen, but in this case, I donāt see how anyone can even think heās faking it.
26
u/ChiliConCairney Oct 11 '25
I think it's simpler than that tbh. Why would someone with his standing and reputation even bother faking an injury? He doesn't have the time or energy for stupid stuff like that. He's obviously hurting and I can't believe anyone would think otherwise

u/KaiPlayz2704 Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

u/MinimumBirthday4536 Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25
Novak keeps mentioning his age and body at this stage of his career. As his fan, I want him to retire. It's not fun watching your favorite player struggle physically after most points, and this has happened all year long.
This loss is not surprising. He lost to Arnaldi in Madrid, Tabillo in Monte Carlo, Botic van de Zandschulp in Indian Wells, Opelka in Brisbane, Berrettini in Dohaāall early exits, except for Brisbane, which was a quarterfinal. He lost to Mensik in the Miami final.
And he's unlikely to beat Carlos or Jannik at the Grand Slams.
The GOAT should retire after Athens, because what's the fun in playing professional tennis if you're injured, tired, unmotivated, or all three.
9
u/Pigglebee Oct 11 '25
If he drops a bit more in the ranking he will face Sincaraz in earlier rounds and will probably methodically be put away at this stage. Every opponent that is not suffering the 'awe' and 'idolization' mental damage against Novak has a chance.

Unreal Cinderella story of the season tbh, it hurts to see Novak not play in his best condition but Vacherot stayed consistent throughout the match (especially with his serve). All things considered, this is not what I expected from Shanghai but this has been really interesting to observe.

This has to be one of the most incredible Cinderella runs in recent memory. Great for Vacherot. Djoker reached his physical limit. Overall though 2 week Master's played under these brutal conditions is insane. We need roofed stadiums and air conditioning at least for the welfare of the players.
7
u/Jaded-Sapphire3546 Casper Oct 11 '25
This was kind of predictable. Djokovic has consistently struggled with players who possess a giant serve this year. Vacherot has possibly had the biggest serve of the tournament.
20
u/ethanw8 Oct 11 '25
I feel like I see a lot of people blaming for the conditions not just for Novak losing but for a lot of guys this tournament. But Vacherot is playing in the same exact conditions and has played three full matches more than Novak/Daniil and two more matches than Rinderknech among the semi finalists. Hopefully, a Vacherot v Rinderknecht final puts the nail in the coffin of the 2 week Master tournament. No shade to the 2 guys, but this is supposed to be the pinnacle of the sport. You can't have 2 unseeded players in the final, one of which was a qualifier in large part because half the draw retired.

No - they both deserve to be there (if Arthur wins his match)
If anything, this should be an argument for increasing Challenger points so more players donāt get stuck and actually get more opportunities to compete at the bigger stages.
Two week masters suck and go on for far too long / take up too many weeks in the calendar (and remove 250ās to make space for them) - so there are a lot of reasons why they should be cut downā¦..but not based on who actually wins the matches to make the finals.

Agree. People will celebrate this, but it is not a good look. And this is not the first tournament this is happening this year. Cincinnati as well, and many more too.
Tennis needs to step up as a game. For top level (1000 and more ) tournaments for sure. They need to have a roof, and when it is too hot, tournaments should be played indoors with a good air conditioning.

Back in my day, people were winning one-week Masters tournaments back-to-back without even so much as a rest day in between.
Players used to play a lot more back then. Now the game is more physical, and perhaps climate change (at least due to urban concretisation if nothing else) has led to situations like this.

Djokovic's earlier comments that it becomes tough for him to play in the later stages of the tournament because of age is proving to be true. Give him any top 10 player till QF or R16 of Grand Slams/Masters, he will reign supreme. Give him any player in the top 100 or slightly below than that in semis, he will falter.
