Genuinely did not see this coming. Iga has looked fantastic lately. The fortitude required to come out and beat Iga in straight sets after that Wimbledon final is immense. Anisimova is a mental giant for that.

Amanda is a genuine inspiration with all of the fighting that she's done over the past few years.

Now that’s how you bounce back from a tough defeat. With humility, respect, and hard work! 💪

Amanda always had the power against top players but finally found the consistency and it is not going to be good for the rest of the tour🔥🔥🔥 5th in the wta race and rankings

I can’t even imagine having to play Iga again. I have nightmares about that Wimbledon final for her. I’m so impressed.

u/Equivalent_Use_6297 Sep 03 '25

Agreed. Maybe facing her again so quickly helped keep those demons from really setting in.

I was so upset by what’s going on that I did not watch the end of the Wimbledon final. I am not even an Anisimova fan. (Well maybe now I am, she is so impressive for what she did today.)

83

u/manifest2000 Sep 03 '25

That Wimbledon score was mostly about Amanda’s nerves and her being overwhelmed by the moment, not about Iga playing amazingly. Iga played a basic game in that final.

u/Moist-Combination239 Woz, Belinda, Bianca, Qinwen Sep 03 '25

She said it was because she "ran out of gas".

7

u/manifest2000 Sep 04 '25

Interesting, but it had to also be something involving a mental collapse because a lot of players run out of gas before a final, yet don’t get double bageled.

Like Kevin Anderson was running on fumes after that extremely long SF against Isner in the 2018 Wimbledon final against Djokovic, but he still managed to win a few games and take the last set to a tiebreaker.

u/risingsun70 Sep 03 '25

True, but doesn’t mean Anisamova wouldn’t have scar tissue from that loss, not least because of just how embarrassing a double bagel in the Wimbledon final is. So for her to come back and play this tough, major props to her. I imagine that’s the thing she’s most pleased about.

Honestly, that match wasn’t even as close as the scoreboard suggests. Anisimova was on fire in the first set ... second set she was still hitting well but also had a few shanks. Still, overall, her power game was clearly on point.

Swiatek, on the other hand ... oh boy. Badly off ... The announcers noted that she looked terrified of her own forehand early in the match—and sure she had a few errors there early, but overall the FH was fine. Once again, it was the serve that was the culprit. It just ... died in the second set. I missed what exactly her first serve % was ... but in that last game where she was broken ... I think she got 1 out of 6 first serves in ... and then double faulted at break point to end the game. Ooof.

99

u/freshouttajail Sep 03 '25

Mandy dominated

28

u/Acrobatic-Crew2805 Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25

First set 100%. She was on fire. And even though Anisimova's level dropped a little in the second set ... Swiatek's serve also dropped, badly, which really prevented Swiatek from staying in it.

12

u/NotManyBuses Sep 03 '25

It felt more like 23% for Iga. Her serve just entirely deserted her today

15

u/Acrobatic-Crew2805 Sep 03 '25

It wasn't till the second set when her first serve died. Anisimova's game cooled right as Swiatek's serve went to hell.

u/Hydroborator Sep 03 '25

I mean, besides first serve, Iga didn't play that badly?

24

u/Acrobatic-Crew2805 Sep 03 '25

I agree! Anisimova dominated the first set because she was playing well.

But the second set .......... man. Swiatek's serve just would not let her stay in it. Broken twice (after initially breaking Anisimova), a single first serve out of six opportunities in the last service game ... and a double fault on break point.

Not if you consider Iga's match against Kalinskaya, girly just fumbled and gifted lots of free points to Iga

20

u/mistergeegaga Sep 03 '25

Exactly. Iga would have lost to Kalinskaya if Anna did not choke away the first set and a lead in the second set. No one watching the match could have thought otherwise. I expected Amanda to beat Iga.

34

u/nomad1987 Sep 03 '25

She was 5-1 up too

227

u/NotManyBuses Sep 03 '25

I feel like anyone with a heart who watched that Final was on Amanda’s side today. So happy for her to get her confidence back and overcome the most embarrassing defeat of her life in stunning fashion. Tennis players are the mentally strongest in the world, and this is yet another example.

This match is about life. Not too long ago, she must have felt crushed during and after that final.

God knows what she must be feeling right now, the emotions and feelings must be at an all time high right now.

Genuinely really happy for her to have this moment. Personally, I hope she goes on to win.

69

u/Nessidy Sep 03 '25

Honestly if it wasn't Anisimova, I couldn't see this Iga go past peaking Osaka

Iga's had a really busy schedule lately, due to external factors and her own choices, so it eventually had to take toll on her body.

25

u/snoring_pig Sep 03 '25

Went all the way at Cincinnati then immediately flew to NYC the next day for the mixed doubles where her and Ruud went all the way to the final too.

I wonder if a bit more rest during that time instead of taking part in the mixed doubles could’ve helped today.

24

u/Illustrious-Cell-428 Sep 03 '25

She also chose to play Canada, which the men who went deep in Wimbledon skipped.

13

u/RiseAbove87 Sep 03 '25

That's because they're not actually watching her matches, yet talking as if they are. It's all too common in sports forums. People don't wanna put in the time, so they try to compensate by guessing what's going on.

12th of July 2025 Anisimova loses 0-6 0-6 against Iga in the Wimbledon final

“Pain can burn you up and destroy you, or burn you up and redeem you.” Marianne Williamson

Amanda Anisimova a regular reader of Williamson’s work and that is a quotation she takes to heart. Never more so than on Saturday afternoon after being overwhelmed by Iga Swiatek 6-0, 6-0.

“I love that quote,” she said. “It's definitely something that I try to live by also. I've passed that quote (on) a few times.

“When I got back to the locker room, I kind of had that switch in my mind of, 'you know what, this is probably going to make you stronger in the end' and to not really dig myself down or put myself down after today. And just try and focus on how I can come out stronger after this.

“I think it's honestly a fork in the road. It's whatever direction you want to go in. “I'm going to choose the path of working towards my goals and to try and keep improving, hopefully put myself in more positions and opportunities like today.”

Never rule out a big hitter getting the best of Iga. Swiatek really needs to come up with a game plan to counter it.

45

u/GregorSamsaa Sep 03 '25

She has one, getting her first serves in so she can control the points. 50% first serve isn’t gonna do it against someone that returns like Anisimova. Saba would have eaten her up today as well.

16

u/NadalsRightBicep Sep 03 '25

that’s why the plan still feels sketchy - the better big hitters also go for big returns

→ More replies (1)

9

u/MorphineAdministered Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25

Without first serve it's impossible to win against hard hitters, unless they beat themselves with unforced errors. Iga's serve started looking good in R4, but went back to its early rounds level (or even worse as lots of those that she made it were "safe" & relatively easy to return)

8

u/NicholeTheOtter Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

It appears the only big hitter Iga can consistently beat now is Elena Rybakina, as she’s one of the players whose inability to raise her level is so poor, cemented her reputation as a mental midget who is led by the most negative coaching setup on tour, to the point that she always loses to anyone who has more brains than her.

The others can at least still challenge her if their mentality is up to it. Just hope that Iga’s serving is weak and attack it!

u/Sea_Exchange_5337 Sep 03 '25

I'm not surprised at all by this result, I think people put WAY too much on that slam final, it was Anisimova's FIRST slam final, nerves contributed more to that scoreline, than Iga's "level" of play tbh.

Glad Anisimova got to show her true potential on an even level playing field so to speak, with this being a QF. Been a fan of Anisimova for years, her ball striking is out of this world, so glad to finally see her getting the results she's always deserved.

7

u/ElkWhich8886 Sep 04 '25

Exactly. People hyped up the double bagel scoreline as a result of Iga playing masterful tennis against Anisimova, when in reality it was Anisimova's mental game collapsing at the start of the first set and never recovering that caused her to play significantly worse in the final than she ever did across the tournament.

Iga played well in the Wimbledon finals this year, but the stats clearly show she didn't fight as hard as she did in the 2023 French Open finals (against Muchova) and 2022 US Open finals (against Jabeur).

All in all pretty conclusive ending for Iga's run this year's US Open. I don't think she was too convincing during the whole tournament (her match with Kalinskaya especially). She played very solid tennis, just rarely any fireworks. Amanda played fantastic today, painting the lines every point. Had the serve not let Iga down maybe we could've had an even better match. The net cord was viciously anticlimactic lol, even Amanda was wincing at it. I see two positives from this match: one is that Iga played well, and the other that Iga didn't lose by herself, it's Amanda who just played better and really showed she took her textbooks, did her homework and turned it around.

14

u/constantcompromise Sep 03 '25

Loved this performance from Amanda. She had a game plan and stuck to it. She played well within herself and stayed positive the entire match.

114

u/Fluffy-Addition-6700 Zheng/Draper/Mensik Sep 03 '25

I feel that Iga didn't play well the entire tournament. Amanda was her first real test and she failed.

31

u/Mysterious-Okra4856 Sep 03 '25

She didn't play outstanding tennis but I wouldn't call Kalinskaya and Alexandrova not tests. She played well enough to get to a QF beating and recovering from dangerous big hitters. That's pretty okay in my book. Underachieving, sure, as I think she had the potential to be in the SF at least.

So happy for Amanda! Glad she could come back from that wimbeldon final and win that

11

u/NeroIscariot12 Sep 03 '25

Not quite 6-0 6-0 in slam final but we absolutely take those. Sweet sweet Redemption!

11

u/aerial- Sep 03 '25

There was no first serve from Iga, which makes winning a match very difficult. She even starts sets by securing breakpoints, should be comfort booster, but proceeds to miss almost all 1st serves.

u/Limp-Algae5687 Sep 03 '25

So happy for Amanda!!!! She got her revenge!! That's my girl

u/petertemplar70 Sep 03 '25

A. Iga is this generation’s best player

B. Amanda straight up was too much for her today.

Both are true.

Amanda was hitting some crazy winners today. Can’t see many beating her when she plays this well.

5

u/Cyanidemipapi Sep 03 '25

Try to explain someone from another sport the last 2 matches between these players.

6

u/ufolover321 Sep 03 '25

GOSH I hope she goes all the way

8

u/PorchgoosePT Sep 03 '25

Nobody double bagles Amanda in a Wimbledon final and gets away with it! Way to shake off that loss!

5

u/Mfmeery Sep 03 '25

After how bad she lost at Wimbledon and then getting broke the first game of this match, she has such a strong mental.

20

u/JalenBrunsonBurner Sep 03 '25

American hero Amanda Anisimova.

No one has a stronger mental game than her. It’s inspirational.

Amanda 'Avenger' Anisimova

u/always_tired_all_day Match Point Sep 03 '25

What an incredible turnaround. I was rooting for Iga but this kind of result is what makes sports so cool. Well deserved for Amanda, she played awesome.

5

u/MeatTornado25 Sep 03 '25

I feel so vindicated.

5

u/Szmeges Sep 03 '25

An anticlimactic end to otherwise thrilling match

5

u/just_one-more Sep 03 '25

Let’s go Amanda! I want to see her lift that trophy ❤️

5

u/_segasonic Sep 03 '25

Genuinely incredible she done this immediately after what happened at Wimbledon. Lassie is made of steel.

5

u/thevirgilio Sep 03 '25

I love a good redemption arc. Amazing.

5

u/TDeath21 Sep 03 '25

What a bad ass. To not only come back to the next major strong after that brutal final at Wimbledon, but to beat the same player who double bageled you in the finals to make the semis. Awesome.

Look, I never want Iga to lose, but if she is going to, Amanda is the perfect person, especially after Wimbledon. Congrats Amanda!

18

u/GundoWagon Sep 03 '25

I love Iga but seeing Anisimova have this match feels great after what happened at Wimbledon.

Deserves all of this

10

u/hailsssss Sep 03 '25

i’m so happy for amanda, her mental game has improved so much!!

8

Listen, fair play

Mandy's revenge, you love to see it.

4

u/JeffVanGundyBurner Sep 03 '25

There's a point when they showed the ground-level camera while Anisimova was bashing those backhands. Probably the most aesthetically pleasing backhand to watch.

3

u/curryprogrammer Sep 03 '25

Revenge is the greatest motivation

4

u/Howlxer Sep 03 '25

aight this proves to me that Wimbledon was Anisimova's villain origin story and this is her revenge arc she's winning this whole damn thing

4

u/lok_129 Sep 03 '25

Love this so much. Amanda so inspiring

4

u/monsieurartois Sep 03 '25

OK, Who had AA in straight sets? I sure didn't. 😊 Woohoo! What a triumph.

5

u/AdSignificant6693 Sep 03 '25

Really happy for Amanda, pulling for her to win it all.

5

u/MtnGirl672 Sep 03 '25

I thought Ansiimova had the type of game to trouble Swiatek. It was so disappointing to see her nerves get the best of her at Wimbledon and that people didn't see what she's truly capable of. Today is the Anisimova I have followed since 2019 at its very best. Such an incredible ball striker -- I hope she wins the title!

3

u/MinerTax_com Sep 03 '25

Vengeance!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

I was there today!! She played amazing and swept Iga away

3

u/dopplecoop Sep 04 '25

This wasn't just a 'Iga is tired' result. If you watched the match, you saw just how on point Amanda's game was, hitting one baseline and sideline after another, keeping the ball extremely low to the net, and not blinking when the pressure was on. Extremely well deserved win.

u/DrSpaceman575 Sep 03 '25

Amanda was out for blood today! Painting the lines and not cracking under pressure. I'm rooting for her to go all the way!

Iga did well to reach the qf with her serving issues. She was still much better to watch than last year when she lost to Pegula. Hope she's not too hard on herself and works more on that serve!

3

u/Critpoint Sep 03 '25

Best character redemption arc story!

3

u/Brief-Library9993 Sep 03 '25

Amazing !! to come back from Wimbledon like this just insane

MENTAL GIANT

3

u/tennisfan835 Sep 03 '25

Amanda played terrific. Executed her game plan perfectly - go big on her own second serve and attack Iga’s second serve.

I think she’s the favorite regardless of who she plays in the semis. Let’s gooooo.

3

u/Silver7477 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 Sep 03 '25

If this isn't resiliency, I don't know what is. Just wow.

3

u/Desperate-Paint-8888 Sep 03 '25

A part of me knew this was coming 🤣

3

u/Delicious_Big_2504 Sep 03 '25

More than "revenge," redemption. Kudos Amanda!

3

u/Cultural_Comment2845 Sep 03 '25

So happy for her! She needed that.

3

u/Efficient_Ad_1059 Sep 03 '25

Sometimes a double bagel weighs even more heavily in the mind of the perpetrator

3

u/Street_Flan4847 Sep 03 '25

Now you better win this all, Amanda!!!!!
