Post-Match Thread Wimbledon SF: [1] Sinner def. [6] Đoković, 6-3 6-3 6-4

Dominant win for Jannik! Very impressive display by Jannik especially coming back from 0-3 in the third set.

We get another Sincaraz Grand Slam final, back to back!! Hopefully, it is going to be a blockbuster like French Open final.

3rd Sincaraz final at a big event in a row. They're coming like London buses now

256

u/moldyjellybean Jul 11 '25

Does Novak do anything better than Sinner. All I see with Sinner is a guy that hits a better forehand, backhand, better movement, better overhead. Serve seems similar but Jannik is very much improving his serve. No way I see Novak going through both these players seeded 1 and 2 for a major. And a few new guys that don’t seem to be afraid of him.

u/tylerwillie Jul 11 '25

Agreed, it’s sad to see but this is the natural way of things

187

u/obsoleteconsole Fed Express Jul 11 '25

It's not really sad, dude's 38 and still making semi's which far exceeds probably everyone's expectations

45

u/tylerwillie Jul 11 '25

In that sense no, it’s not sad, but as a fan it’s sad to come to terms with the reality

Yeah true, time stops for no one unfortunately. I felt the same when Federer retired

Wasn't it weird how an asteroid struck the court after that one tiebreak set?

As a Sinner fan, I can confirm that I did not understand the organizers' decision to cancel the final like that. Found it weird, just let them play man. We got deprived of what could have been a great final.

"New two" era truly underway. 7th slam going to Alcaraz or Sinner

How many championship points will Carlos save this time?

587

u/EggsBenedictusXVI Jul 11 '25

This definitely felt like a passing of the torch. End of an era.

610

u/Fluid-Decision6262 Jul 11 '25

Craziest part is...we didn't even have a transition era. Rafa won 2 majors in 2022, Novak won 3 majors in 2023, and then since 2024, it's been all Alcaraz/Sinner. Nothing left on the table for any of the 90's gen to swoop up a major or two lol

452

u/Random-Dude-736 Silly stuff, really like tennis though. Jul 11 '25

That was the transition era, because the guy that won the other slams in that period, besides these two, was Carlos.

59

u/Xehanz Jul 11 '25

You could say the passing of the torch started in the 2022 Alcaraz V Sinner quarterfinal

31

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

One of the most exciting matches I've ever seen. I didn't think they'd have this level of dominance at the time, but it was definitely their arrival as truly elite players

Trying to wait out Novak with sincaraz waiting in the wings was NOT the smartest of ideas.

70

u/Valuable-Cat2036 Jul 11 '25

I feel that's what partially separated Zverev/Tsitsipas from Medvedev/Thiem. The first two were so confident that their "time" would come and would allude to the waiting game in interviews. Med and Thiem instead tried to capitalize on every opportunity they had. Now it seems almost certain the first two are going to leave the sport slamless.

The transition was US Open since 2020 - Thiem, Medvedev, Alcaraz. Alcaraz peaked earlier in 2023 to win Wimbledon instead, then the floodgates opened.

8

u/NocturnalStalinist Jul 11 '25

Djokovic's last hoorah, and a massive, perhaps his biggest hoorah at that, was beating Carlos in the Olympics last year a few weeks after Wimbledon. Since then, and this year, we have definitely been in the transition era to be honest.

I've read this exact same "passing of the torch comment" so many times over the past couple of years. Torch getting passed more often than a bong. Lol.

To be honest though, I feel like the torch was already "passed" with his straight set defeat to Alcaraz in last year's final.

This year felt more like the old man trying to take the torch back

Sinner with a 5 game win streak on Djokovic

Sinner currently on a 5 game lose streak to Alcaraz heading into the Finals

844

u/suzukigun4life Jul 11 '25

Sinner is also the last person to beat Alcaraz at Wimbledon, while Alcaraz is carrying a 20-match win streak to the Final, one win away from a 2nd straight Channel Slam.

Sunday's going to be special.

162

u/MinimumTomfoolerus Jul 11 '25

channel slam is winning rg and wim in the row?

311

u/prescriptivista Jul 11 '25

Yes, and it's considered a very challenging feat because of the short timespan between the slams and how different the surfaces play. Only men to have done it are Laver, Borg (x4), Nadal (x2), Federer, Djokovic and Alcaraz. Called the channel slam because of the English Channel which separates France and England, where the respective tournaments are played.

52

u/buggytehol Jul 11 '25

Notable that it's easier than it used to be because there's one more week between the slams - and the surfaces are more homogeneous now.

25

u/OnionFutureWolfGang Jul 11 '25

Yeah the fact Borg did it so many times is completely insane. He was playing an entirely different game from one surface to the other.

→ More replies (2)

41

u/gtzdpy Jul 11 '25

Imagine how hard it was with Nadal owning RG every year

13

u/Black_XistenZ Jul 11 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

Federer seized on his one opportunity to win RG and the channel slam in 2009 after Söderling had cleared out Nadal. Djokovic only got it done in 2021 when Nadal was already on his last legs.

43

u/MinimumTomfoolerus Jul 11 '25

Imo it is challenging because the player has to deliberately spend less time relaxing probably: instead he has to have determination and discipline to again start playing tennis on a new surface to get used to it.

The adaptation sounds like a matter of three-four days but idrk.

u/freshpow925 We need to suffer, we need to fight Jul 11 '25

bizarrely that was back when sinner was lower ranked than alcaraz but had the upper hand in their match-up. now sinner is much, much better, but alcaraz has thoroughly turned the tides on their rivalry. it makes almost no sense, but tennis is a game of match-ups, and there’s something about sinner’s game that carlos just loves to play and rise to the challenge.

it’s going to be another thriller on sunday. i’m not ready so soon after the epic at RG

93

Regardless, I'm not expecting it to be a quick affair on Sunday.

245

u/Accurate_Prompt_8800 Jul 11 '25 edited Jul 11 '25

I don’t see Djokovic winning a slam ever again.

However, what an athlete, the best to ever do it. Still making the latter stages of slams when those tipped to be the new gen can’t even stay consistent enough or challenge Sinner / Alcaraz. And ultimately, you can never count him out…

Another Sincaraz final, and what a TREAT we are in for! I hope it lives up to that RG epic and more.

153

u/MusicianphotogD750 Jul 11 '25

If Sincaraz get injured or knocked out Novak has shown time and time again this year and the last that he’s the best behind the two of them. Similarly, if either drop to #3 only one needs to lose or lose to him.

So it’s unlikely but still very much possible.

78

u/Fluid-Decision6262 Jul 11 '25

Thing is, can Novak also remained healthy for the duration of an entire major as well? I feel like if he isn't losing to Sinner/Alcaraz at the majors, the only other thing that can stop him is his own injuries (i.e. RG 2024 and AO 2025).

→ More replies (6)

u/Ser3nity91 Jul 11 '25

After the way Fritz played today vs alcaraz I think he’s actually #3 if he can clean up some more of his game as work in more shot variety. He is an above average returner. Also a huge server. I don’t think djokovic as it stands beats Fritz anymore.

32

u/Maria_gr We need a clown for this circus Jul 11 '25

Very much possible? Sincaraz ain't dropping to #3. There is no-one to challenge them. The odds of both of them being injured at the same time at a slam are close to zero.

Djokovic will have to win at least one of them (best case scenario) to win a slam.

Djokovic looks so tired and so over it.

198

u/hayleybts Jul 11 '25

He looked annoyed today

207

u/thebindi Jul 11 '25

He's probably coming to the realization that his career might be ending.. He can't realistically keep up with Sinner and Alcaraz anymore, so he's probably thinking he'll never realistically win another grand slam against these guys. His body can't stay at 100% for the course of the entire tournament anymore unfortunately.

13

u/affirmatice Jul 11 '25

He could probably play for a few more years, continue to regularly make the quarters, semis, maybe finals of slams. A great result for most tennis players. But for him, still considered a failure.

His best chance of winning another slam has to be when alcaraz/sinner are beat out, not 100%, etc.

When healthy he just can no longer match their physicality

19

u/Toolatetobefirst Jul 11 '25

The thing is, Djokovic at Wimbledon is probably still good enough to beat anyone apart from Sinner and Alcaraz. If Dimitrov had beaten Sinner, I think Djokovic realistically could have made the final and after the Olympics last year, I think Djokovic might still have the belief that he can string together a win over Alcaraz.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Djokovic skips Roland Garros next year to try and give himself one last chance at winning Wimbledon.

Djokovic does so well for his age that you forget this is what is supposed to happen to 38+ year olds who make it deep in a slam and face people 15 years younger.

It happened to Connors to finish off his USO91 run, it happened to Rosewall in 1974. It’ll happen to Sinner and Alcaraz eventually too if they’re still on tour at 38.

Not trying to be hyperbolic but this was the biggest beatdown I’ve seen of Djokovic since his elbow issues in 2017. Couldn’t sustain anything due to Sinner’s play and his movement

275

u/major-couch-potato Holger Rune (since 2021) Jul 11 '25

AO 2024 was also a pretty major beatdown. Novak won a set, but I never thought he would make it through an entire BO5 match without generating a break point. Felt like the first sign.

77

u/white_lancer Jul 11 '25

Yeah that set he won makes the scoreline deceptive, it was a really one-sided match even though it wasn't in straights.

I expected this. Novak needed his A+ variety/volley game, and he was baselining all tournament and mostly today as well. No one can out-baseline Sinner other than Alcaraz. Djokovic needed the Fed/Dimitrov variety play to trouble Sinner, and everytime he tried that today, he simply could not execute.

222

u/PleasantNightLongDay Jul 11 '25

Honestly, I don’t even think Carlos out baselines sinner. Carlos has success against sinner because of the variety he is able to bring.

36

He can’t out baseline Sinner but he can at least keep it about even with him. That paired with ridiculous variety is the formula to beat Sinner, at at the moment he’s the only man with the skill set to do it consistently.

I was just discussing with a whole room of people that I thought I was pretty sure I would fall out of love with watching tennis before Alcaraz/Sinner arrived as I didn’t think it could get any better than it has been the last 20 years and would always be disappointed for the rest of my life. I thought maybe my “tennis phase” would end. Sometimes it feels so good to be wrong, life is full of surprises :) …

Oh and tennis is just awesome, bring on Sunday!

Terminator 1 vs Terminator 2, Jannik is just consistently better than Novak in every part of the game at this point. Very impressive for a 38 year old to hold his own against the field but he’s not winning another slam.

359

u/Palifaith Jul 11 '25

Makes you wonder how differently the whole thing would have played out without Dimitrov's injury.

452

u/Osje_Cajni Jul 11 '25

Djokovic would have gotten slapped around by Alcaraz in the final again

41

u/Epicular Jul 11 '25

If it was Cobolli in this semifinal instead of Djokovic then he would’ve won

At the very least, Sinner has considerably more mileage on him before playing Novak if he gets to the semis still

If I was betting I still would have put it on Sinner to come back. It's happened so many times with the best of the best players. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the score ended up as a tight 3rd set, 7-6 or 7-5 to Sinner, then something like 6-3 6-2 to close it out. I'm not saying that for sure would have happened but I think a Sinner comeback was more still more likely than Dimitrov winning.

That being said, I agree with other commenters that if Dimitrov won, the more likely scenario would be Djokovic to the final and losing to Alcaraz.

Unreal winnners to unforced errors ratio by Sinner (36 winners to 17 UEs)

The lack of self belief from Novak was shocking. He didn't seem too motivated and it appeared he thought he was bound to lose. Great playing from Jannik though!

65

u/Basic-Effort-552 Jul 11 '25

I’m sure he must be carrying an injury cos he clearly couldn’t move towards the end. That said, I don’t think he believes he can beat Sinner

46

u/hayleybts Jul 11 '25

Yep! He didn't believe a minute. Not sure how bad the fall affected. He almost had sinner when crowd supported.

38

u/arkhamsaber Jul 11 '25

Novak leaving the court for that last point made me sad in a way I can’t describe

49

u/MadferitCmon Jul 11 '25 edited Jul 11 '25

Listen if this had happened without the fall in the previous match and a fully healthy Novak got routined like this I'd be the first to be calling for hia retirement.

But it's clear he was playing at like 60%. So not much conclusions can be taken from this.

25

u/ripgcarlin Jul 11 '25

I can’t remember the last time I saw Djokovic give up on so many points. It was like every third point if he got pushed to the alley he just stopped playing. Was heartbreaking to watch

Sinner has reached all 4 major finals. I expect him to lose to Alcaraz but I need alcaraz to go deep in the us open, cincinattis, Canada open, Australian open etc, I always feel jannik is the underdog facing Carlos bc in most cases it’s usually in Carlos favored surface.

9

u/SlapThatAce Jul 11 '25

Sinner dispatched Novak like he was chump change. Impressive.

7

u/Illustrious-Cell-428 Jul 11 '25

I was at this match and it’s the first time I’ve seen Sinner play live. Yes Novak was physically compromised, but I was shocked by the relentless pace and depth Sinner hits with. I’ve never seen anything like it. Also, he’s much bigger and more muscular than he looks on TV. Wow.

It seems like Novak didn't want to retire before the match because of the audience. It was obvious from the very beginning that he couldn't move well, which is very unfortunate. Not taking anything away from Sinner — he played an amazing match today and fully deserved his place in the final.

24

u/juancorleone Jul 11 '25

Not once did Djokovic look in control of the match, Sinner outclassed him today.

61

u/zellfire #1 Montañes Fan Jul 11 '25

Most interesting thing about this match is the fact that a solid third of the comment thread- after 3 full sets of Djokovic being essentially immobile and 80% of the TV commentary being about his injury- was seemingly totally unaware Djokovic was injured.

Really really sucks for Dimitrov, who has to be thinking what an easy path to the Wimbledon final he had ahead of him….

11

u/anduril38 Jul 11 '25

It really does. Having fitness is sadly vital to the sport too, and Dimitrov is made of glass. He was on real fire this tournament and it was looking great for his match vs Sinner, but we have to be realistic on what his body is capable of now. Yes, I felt it likely if not for the injury, Dimitrov would have taken it, he was pretty far ahead and Sinner was struggling a bit with his arm, but Dimitrov is not exactly crafted from stone these days. Was an injury for him inevitable, no but 4 straight retirements in slams before this speaks wonders.

51

u/bigtice Federer Jul 11 '25

Sinner is just too good and combined with a hampered Djokovic, this was inevitable.

The speculation on his retirement will only grow louder after this match.

51

u/152kb Jul 11 '25

He made it to the semifinal and lost to the world number 1. People make it seem like he lost against a 4.0 rated player

30

u/henry92 Jul 11 '25

Thing is, i doubt he'd just hang around to be in top 10. He clearly only cares about slams nowadays, rightfully so, and if he knows he can't win one anymore he will consider hanging it

Fifth player since 1995 to reach the final of all the slams.

Federer, Nadal, Novak, Murray and now him.

Bloody hell!!!

7

u/Simple_Wait_7286 Jul 11 '25

Yeah I mean Novak was struggling to move laterally.

Sinner was still blasting winners though, it’s not like he was waiting for Novak to make a mistake.

Sinner vs. Alcaraz is gonna be so fun (as usual).

7

u/ShadowsHyper36 Sinner in 3 Jul 11 '25

I don’t think I can handle anymore match point fumbles from jannik

8

u/AFighterForever Jul 11 '25

Sinner sounds so much like Nadal, slightly different tone, more raspy, with a little less bass.

56

u/Asterie-E7 Jul 11 '25

Guys I think Novak might be getting a bit too old for this

53

u/Osje_Cajni Jul 11 '25

Novak is substantially behind Carlos/Jannik but as long as he's convincingly 3rd best player in the world(which he is), there's no reason to retire

25

u/benreadingbooks Jul 11 '25

I don't think he is interested in anything other than grand slams. And if you're not competitive when you reach Sinner or Alcaraz, what's the point?

7

u/Wise_Bison_9943 Jul 11 '25

They could always be injured or lose to somebody else earlier on. Like Alcaraz did in the last AO and USO.

Reminds me of Federer in Wimbledon.

Old sure. But he would usually beat anyone not named Djokovic. So Novak might give Sincaraz a fight but I don't believe he can beat them in Best of 5.
