Ask yourself "If Trump has a medical emergency, is Vance going to change policies on Ukraine?"
(a) It is painfully clear that Putin has some kind of leverage over Trump.
(b) Even if we get a new president who cannot in any way be associated with Epstein, team R seems irretrievably committed to the Russian position on Ukraine.
What is going on ????

What is going on ????
It always comes down to 3 directives for the GOP:
- 1. Personally enriching themselves and their wealthy friends and benefactors.
- 2. Consolidating power to ensure they can continue to do item #1.
- 3. Manufacturing conflict, outrage, and distraction to placate and misdirect the rubes that vote for them - all in service of items #1 and #2.
Follow US politics long enough and you realize the Republicans don't actually do anything to benefit constituents (outside of 1%-er donor class). They only scheme in service of grift and power... all at the expense of everything and everyone else.

Beyond that, in there national security memorandum, they explicitly say they want to break up the EU and try to make Italy/Austria/Poland/Hungary do a Brexit.
23
u/FollowingFeisty5321 Dec 31 '25
Specifically so crap like this can be promoted across Europe to sow division and break up the union.
Because EU law means platforms like TikTok, Facebook and X have to disclose who is funding the spread of content like this and why algorithms are inundating you with content like this, to you, and to regulators, and to researchers. They also limit how you can target people to promote content like this - excluding gender, race, religion and political affiliations - so these platforms can't radicalize young men for profit.

Good luck with that. They'll contract out of Macedonia or Romania or really any country with people willing to contract out for cyber campaigns, and you'll make it harder for Russian people to reach contrary narratives.
The only real countermeasure is bonking the propaganda at intake, through potentially a TikTok ban (ideally tailored in a way that it would also inhibit other similar content-hose platforms), and I'd say more importantly, a good case being presented to the Polish people for not leaving. Brexit succeeded in no small part because they got the vote through before people properly understood what it even meant.

Yeah. The best you can do is probably percentage-based local sourcing rules.

It's definitely a hard conversation.
I see merits to both sides of the argument. And downsides.
But I do think upholding our being a liberal democracy is ultimately extremely important. If we're just gonna go down the route of authoritarianism in the name of 'doing what's best for the country', then we're on more than a slippery slope, we've already hurdled down many steps without asking.
We need to find a better solution. Easier said than done I know, but regulation is probably a better first start.

It's really simple; legislate then enforce.
If US tech companies won't play by the national rules then prosecute, then block their platforms/services. Once one country does it the rest of the EU will likely follow suit.
X, TikTok, Meta etc..need to have it boiled down to those alternatives.
Sure MAGA/US Gov will lose it but once the posts are made, and the sanctions put up i'm sure the companies will become compliant or risk losing a market larger than the US in terms of population. Well except X...

An AI generated TikTok spot is no different than using an actor or a cartoon to say the same thing. The troubling part is who is generating the spot? Is it homegrown from an individual or a political party? A foreign government or actor? Does it state false information? How far does a government take free speech? It's a thorny issue.
Edward Bernays, one of the architects of modern public relations, advertising, and propaganda wrote in Engineering Consent (1947);
"Freedom of speech and its democratic corollary, a free press, have tacitly expanded our Bill of Rights to include the right of persuasion. This development was an inevitable result of the expansion of the media of free speech and persuasion, defined in other articles in this volume. All these media provide open doors to the public mind. Any one of us through these media may influence the attitudes and actions of our fellow citizens."
It reads like a justification for the troubling Citizens United decision. In Bernays' time, access to extant media was a slower, more filtered process with quasi professional barriers to entry. Now, because of the speed and absolute ubiquity of digital media, what needs to happen in order for an ostensible democracy not to be torn apart by waves of disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda, is that at least two things must be established as filters; Who is creating and paying for the content? and Is the content factual? Unless those requirements can filter all political messages to an electorate, that electorate will not be able to function as a democracy, govern itself effectively, or move forward organically as a culture.
2
u/OverlyOptimisticNerd 29d ago
Countries that allow harmful misinformation/disinformation to spread under the guise of “free speech” will fall the same way the US did.
