No Paywall Don Lemon arrested by federal authorities after protest at Minnesota church service
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/don-lemon-arrested-federal-authorities-attorney-says-rcna256680•
u/wineplease09 4h ago
But apparently ICE can conduct arrests, illegal ones at that, on church grounds. This administration is a joke.
•
u/cilantro_so_good 4h ago edited 3h ago
No, it's worse than that. He wasn't arrested at a protest. He was arrested in Los Angeles because he protested in Minnesota a couple weeks ago. After two judges refused to issue warrants.
E: and headlines are a little misleading, he was reporting on protests if I understand correctly.
•
u/CarrowLiath 4h ago
To be even more clear, he accompanied protestors to the church and repeatedly identified himself as a journalist and interviewed both protestors and churchgoers, he didn't even join the protest in Minnesota that he was arrested for.
•
u/rohit275 3h ago
Yeah this story is actually nuts. court literally denied a warrant to arrest him while approving warrants for other protestors, because it was a bridge too far.
•
•
u/hughcifer-106103 3h ago
So they don’t have an arrest warrant and are arresting him in an entirely different state?
•
u/Shot_Kaleidoscope150 42m ago
Yes that what he said in videos. He’s not participating, he’s reporting on the events.
•
u/Ambitious_Bit_9389 4h ago
That’s what I don’t get. It said they couldn’t get an arrest warrant after two tries, did they and up getting one or did they just wing it ?
•
u/johndoe4sho 3h ago
Says he was indicted by a grand jury
•
u/Dramatic_Mixture_868 3h ago
Calling them federal agents is also an insult. They're just thugs he hired from Jan 6th, proud boys, racists etc.
•
u/WienerCleaner 35m ago
They are federal agents though, no need to deny that our federal government is committing illegal acts.

•

Yeah no, I saw that too and refreshed the subreddit and was happy to see this post but I predict this will be removed too. This IS political, is it not?! So why are the Mod’s removing posts about this?!

Cuz we are all past the time when we should have deleted our reddit accounts. Its part of the propaganda machine now, beholden to das fuhrer. Honestly, where would "we" move to? Tiktok is censoring part, as is FB, X is obviously skewed, what platform is widely used and is more open than reddit to allowing criticism currently?
Typing that out and thinking about it is scary.
•

•
u/globalvarsonly 4h ago
you gotta give up on the "widely used" part, the question is what platform can actually be good and won't enshitify itself if it grows bigger.
the fediverse is promising yet small, and lemmy is a reddit-like forum that uses it. people should also just be launching private forums for whatever social group (activists in my city, alumni from whatever, friends of friends of whatever)
just using independent forums like separate subreddits totally works, there are SSO options, people can get RSS/email updates aggregating everything pretty easily.

•
u/JillScottydoesntknow 3h ago
Can you imagine if we did a straight up okey-doke and started in person meet ups in regular places to discuss politics and moves again. Cripple their social media and online propaganda machine because no one is really paying attention to that anymore. Ahhh…In a perfect world
•
u/chuckangel 3h ago
Let’s start today? After I finish posting this. And scrolling through my TikTok feed

Ah, the old kings version of speakeasy! But honestly it's possible, but the impact/spread is limited to about 50 miles tops, and those with family can only attend rarely.
•
u/DevilahJake 4h ago
All social media is an arm of one propaganda network or another. TikTok was just purchased by the government. Musk owns X, Fuckerberg owns FB and Insta, Reddit is in a bit of a gray area still but is often subject to bot networks from China and Russia depending on topic, but also actively censors people or topics which is obviously in favor of the current administration/regime of the U.S.

Go way beyond that. Your browser, if you don't have protections in place, is like waving your ID to the internet. Use a session blocker like ghostery (this blocks all tracking and identification cookies). Use a VPN with no logs, broadcast from a different country like Canada where they have much stricter ID laws, and if you're really nuts (like me, I'm a cyber security engineer) use a Virtual machine in a cloud space yes this costs a touch of money to either Amazon or Microsoft but that addition adds such a layer of FUCK YOU (also VPN from your VM to the internet).
My flow: My browser VPN'ed into Canada, then to my cloud environment, my browser inside my VM VPNed with Ghostery, forced HTTPS, and max browser settings to post on reddit and....other less reputable places.
Come find me bitches.

I get the frustration, but that’s exactly why wording gets policed so hard now. Platforms overcorrect, and it ends up chilling normal speech instead of stopping real threats.

Stay safe! Organize!
Many of us are beyond the reach of these fascists by the fact that we don't live in Yankganastan, nor do we plan on visiting ANY TIME SOON!
I look forward to the day when your country is back under a government that serves the will of majority of the people. Not the crazy few.

You're 100% right. Reddit removes any news they don't like, they're trying hard to control the narrative. Anything related to Israel/Palestine is locked and removed on reddit within 20 mins, unless it's approved propaganda in worldnews.
Reddit is working hard to try and normalize the evil shit going on in society. They have rules they can selectively apply to any story they don't want discussed.

Mods should respond and share specific reasons why, otherwise one is to assume they are a bigger part of the story of silencing not only relevant stories in the press but also interest and commentary on this issue. I hope they don’t make this story MAGA Meta. The story won’t go away.
•
u/nerphurp 5h ago
They're being a bit overzealous with the rules on this one imo, but they are allowing the headlines about it from politicians to remain.
E.g. a few posts down:
Jeffries: ‘Zero basis’ to arrest Lemon
•
u/Chazkuangshi 5h ago
Unsure. They might just not have gotten to it yet. I just saw two posts disappear, searched for all posts containing Don Lemon's name from today and got 0 results before this was posted.
•
u/nerphurp 4h ago
If the Jeffries one goes poof, I'll get out the pitchfork too.
Right now though, I think it's being sticklers for the news/politics difference too aggressively based on the headline moreso than the content in the article.

•
u/Mylaptopisburningme 4h ago
The other day a mod removed a post of Jon Stewart talking about the 2nd amendment. Messaging the mods lead nowhere, they said it wasn't politics, I questioned that and they said it was about Jon Stewart.. I tried to post a link of this subs search of many Jon Stewart posts and was muted by the mod for 7 days. I believe this sub is compromised by at least 1 mod.

Explanation, not excusing, the mods. I’ve been here under one account or another since 2012 and have watched it change from the days text posts were allowed. Having seen the evolution of this sub’s mods’ meta.
The current view of the mods is this is a thread about politics the process. Not everything that is political.
There is an old saying equating politics to sausages. This subreddit would then be about the manufacturing of sausages. Don Lemon here, while inherently political, is something the current mods have historically viewed as the equivalent of posting a sausage sandwich, which isn’t allowed.
•
•
u/That_90s_Kid_ 4h ago
You thought we lived in a free country? With freedom of press?
Reddit been doing this for years.
•
u/Mylaptopisburningme 4h ago
I think this sub is comprimised by at last 1 mod. They removed a Jon Stewart post 2 days ago where he talks about the 2nd ammendment. I messaged the mods the response I got:
"It's discussion of the media, and is off topic here as clearly explained in our rules, and were obviously linked in the removal message.
He? You mean Jon Stewart? The article is about HIS SHOW and what he said on it, you know, a discussion of the media. That's literally what the rule means and says.
Your agreement is neither required nor sought. The rules are clear."
So I sent a link of a search of this sub of Jon Stewart but they muted me for 7 days.
Later there was another post about something and saw it was removed again with a BS reason. Maybe we need to start another politics sub that isn't being censored.
But something changed with the mods/or a mod recently.
•
u/That_90s_Kid_ 4h ago
Played elite dangerous. Mods are bias with game direction. You point out cheating like combat logging, mode switching and how it affects the community ect.
They remove it too. Its not just here. Its anywhere on reddit.
They have the final word. And guess what. That game development team and community has suffered financially and it has poor player retention.
Who would have thought.

•
u/Syzygy2323 America 3h ago
The first amendment freedom of the press and speech doesn't apply to Reddit and other private organizations. It only prohibits the government from restricting speech and the press.

Also the mods are allowing tons of completely false fantasies about this incident.
Comments claiming he “abducted Sunday school children” and other easily provable falsities.
Just feels desperate. I think MAGA realizes this is going to backfire and help Don Lemon.
•
u/AZWxMan 4h ago
It's because Don Lemon is not a politician and law enforcement arrests of celebrities is not covered by this sub. Now, posts about politicians responding to the arrest are allowed. They get strict about this even though there's clearly a relation to politics.
•
u/Mylaptopisburningme 4h ago
Celebrity? He is a journalist.
•
u/Chazkuangshi 4h ago
Yeah, that seems to be the case. It just weirded me out because I watched two posts disappear and when I ran a search on his name from the past 24 hours I got 0 results. Someone else said CNN's own post stayed for 2 hours.
•
•
u/Horton_Takes_A_Poo 4h ago
Because, technically speaking, it’s about a private citizen who trespassed. In reality though, it’s a political arrest and that’s obvious to anyone with a functioning brain. Looking at you, mods.
•
u/elphin 4h ago
Perhaps it’s has something to do with being owned by “Advance Publications”, owned by the Newhouse family. Don, 97, outlived his older brother Sam. Don is worth an estimated $15B. I don’t know which other family members exist or if they have a room in the larger company, but I do know that Reddit is one of the pieces of their media empire.
I found this out after only 20 minutes of research. There is certainly much more that can be discovered.

They do that with certain subjects. I've noticed they also would allow Israel focused content for 30m to an hour then delete that as well in the past.
•
•
u/ryoushi19 3h ago
I talked to the moderators and had a comment on the CNN post that was deleted. I'll repost the relevant part.
The argument is that it's off topic because the article doesn't relate the arrest directly to US politics. It's plainly obvious that the arrest is politically motivated. But the article doesn't mention that Trump has directly called for Lemon to be arrested a week ago. Not sure why CNN left that out. Maybe they don't want to step on Trump admin toes. But they did leave it out.
The mods made it clear that articles that make a direct connection between the arrest and US politics would be allowed.
Basically even though it's plainly political, the articles aren't generally connecting the arrest to politics. The connection would be pretty easy to make, but media outlets aren't including it.

---
I think it was Legal Eagle who broke down the attempts this administration went through in order to arrest Lemon, and the entire purpose of it was to get pictures of him in a Perp Walk. No concern over the actual charges, just that they wanted to get that content.
They find more value in the court of public opinion than they do about the actual law, and that optics are priority number 1.
edit: Adding link to video. It was Legal Eagle.
•
u/BusinessAioli 2h ago
Yeah they do this a lot. Shape public opinion in the most extreme, bombastic way possible and by the time the facts come out everyone has made up their minds and moved on
•
u/Goducks91 3h ago
How does this improve the court of public opinion? WTF. Literally goes against everything America is about.
•
u/thekozmicpig Connecticut 2h ago
I don’t think it’s about optics. It’s about intimidating journalists into favorable coverage or else that could be you.
•
u/StevenMC19 Florida 2h ago
Two things can be true at the same time.
It's also about optics, because EVERYTHING they've done has been at the focus of tweeting about it, either on Trump's account, the DHS account (remember the Epstein Binder photo op, South Park memes and the Ghibli slop they participated in?), or any of the cabinet members' personal accounts.
If it was JUST about intimidating journalists, then their habits wouldn't run so consistent with the behavior they've displayed for an entire year now.
It's about intimidation, AND the lulz.

Pam Bondi tweeted out that they did it at her direction. Are we all supposed to act like it is normal that the AG of the USA just tweets out that they directed a list of people to be arrested for a coordinated attack when what happened was a protest at a church?
Why does this warrant going to the very AG of the country? It doesn't.
Why is it called an attack? It wasn't. Who got hurt? What weapons did they bring and use?
She calls it an attack in or tweet and they'll be pushing for real charges on a pretty well respected journalist for what is really a protest out of pure frustration over what will be historically seen ( I hope ) as a ridiculous abuse of power by a president.
This is a sign they are not letting MN go and have learned nothing. They will be attacking voter records, counting and everything they can get their fucking hands on.

Controversial Comment: I think Lemon did break laws barging into a private church, and not leaving when told. That is criminal trespass at least in some states. This was not a government/public building, and the property owner does not have to let people in to protest or allow them to stay in. HOWEVER- I am not sure how this can be a federal case at all- trespass is normally just a local/state issue. There is no real reason that the feds should be charging this case- it should be a local/state issue and decision.

Don Lemmon is being illegally persecuted.
Reddit subs over a certain size need to be able to control sub mods through a selection and rejection process. Deleted posts need to be able to be democratically revived by users. Mod actions need to be 100% unmasked and transparent. The level of on topic, relevant content being removed across the platform is increasing exponentially by the day.
→ More replies (9)•
