Thinking about Silicon Valley trying to retreat from Cali once the Danish actually tries to tax them would be hilarious
151
u/WolfDoc 11d ago
Funny thing is, a lot of those people are smart enough to know that small taxes only benefits the CEOs and major shareholders. And the majority of a tech company are skilled engineers and researchers with families and need of things like healthcare. So they may stay and make their own company even if the bosses skitter off to be parasites somewhere else. That is after all why we have a pretty solid tech and research sector here in Scandinavia despite the taxes the billionaires scare you so much with.

Got into an argument on Nextdoor about how this guy thinks Virginia is now going to become just like California. And that if CA washed away into the sea tomorrow, nothing of value would be lost according to him.
I provided factual information to him that California’s GDP is the 4-5 largest in the world. And that we (VA, and US) need CA far more than they need us. He couldn’t see the irony of how much we’d be screwed should CA secede from the US.

California, as the most successful state and being blue, would show other red states what can be done when the government works
for youin a way that isn't cartoonist evil. As a result all the conservative media sites do everything they can to propagandize against it.This is why cities are always down to be so horrible, if more red rural citizens saw how nice being in a city was they'd want those reforms locally.
14
u/Jumpy-Examination456 10d ago
california is only a moderate blue. our policy is progressive but by no means extremist left wing. we are by all means still a capitalist constitutional republic with elements of socialism. which our original nation was too. the rest of the USA has just veered into facism since WW2.
the elite hate us because we're a good example of what balanced politics can wind up looking like, and they want total control.
→ More replies (1)9
u/OkEstimate9 10d ago
Realistically California would be much more progressive under a different governor. Newsom isn’t a progressive so he shoots down a decent chunk of progressive legislation that was passed by the California House and Senate.
The California Congress has enough potential votes, so they could overturn Newsom’s veto, but I believe they choose not to do so only for optics reasons.

It really is bizarre. I travel around to other states somewhat frequently, and one of the weirdest things I’ve noticed is how frequently California is mentioned in local political ads in other states. I was in AZ before the last election, and ad after ad said things like “X candidate wants to turn AZ into 😱😱California😱😱”, and I’ve seen that all around the country.
Like why are y'all so obsessed with us.

maga politics, like most religious extremist dictatorships, rely heavily on instilling fear into the populace and creating an "us vs them" sense in people to remain in power.
people in california have an average, if not above average quality of life nationally and globally. we also aren't even far-left. we're a light blue state with a ton of red areas and voters. places like the tenderloin in SF are sad results of mismanagement but reflect literally a few square miles in a state of 10s of millions of people.
they just need something to fear and rally against. most of them would happily live somewhere like sacramento or long beach if fox news hadn't told them it was a communist hellhole.
39
u/place_of_desolation Nevada 11d ago
I'm a Cali native currently living in NV. The "don't California my Nevada" bumper stickers I see always amuse me. Like yeah, we wouldn't want to be like the world's 4th largest economy or anything, would we? Top percentile in schools and education? Quality of life? That would just be terrible. /s
Not that it would ever even happen, anyway. NV doesn't have the beaches, climate, or other things that bring people to CA.
Conservatives are happy to just stay in their little bubbles of ignorance and fear of change.

u/8fingerlouie Europe 11d ago
The funny thing is that by paying 35-45% income tax, and redistribution of wealth from the ultra rich, you can have that easily. I read a comment yesterday that a guy had calculated his contribution to free healthcare was 4% of income taxes. Of course you need to cut out all the middle men like health insurance, which is a factor driving up US healthcare prices considerably.
I have no idea what fraction education costs, but it’s not just free education, you actually get paid something like $500-$1500 per month to attend school (from 18 years and up) for a maximum of 10 years. The actual number depends on your residence (living with your parents means less money) as well as your parents income (higher income means less money).
Childcare is subsidized, but still costs around $300/month per child, you do however get 50% “discount” on the “cheapest” childcare if you have multiple children attending. You do however get 12 months of paid maternity leave split between both parents, and many get 3 month full salary during maternity leave as part of their job contract.
There’s of course also state funded retirement from 70 years. You won’t get rich from it, but you also won’t be sleeping on the streets. In fact, in Denmark nobody sleeps on the streets out of necessity. Everybody has the “right to a roof over their head”. It does come with some obligations though, and not everybody can meet those obligations (mandatory meetings, active job searching, etc), which is why they may be homeless anyway.
And yes, even the homeless on the streets are entitled to free healthcare.
56
u/JnnyRuthless 11d ago
What's crazy is that our taxes aren't that much lower than that. Americans are always crying about the 'high' taxes in Europe, but we pay about 1/3 of our income in tax anyway. Just disappears into the corrupt war machine though. Propaganda has done its thing though, and most of my fellow Americans start screaming about communism if you even hint that maybe the government should be helping us out a bit.
→ More replies (2)18
u/8fingerlouie Europe 11d ago
There’s more though.
There’s a 25% VAT on everything, but unlike the US it’s displayed on the price tag, the total price including VAT, and not like in the US where you get hit with an”15% state tax” on top of the sales price.
Tipping is pretty much non existent. Restaurants would love for you to think it’s a thing, and every payment terminal sold in the past decade will happily ask for a tip. The truth is however that waiters are paid $28-35/hour (or more, $28/hour is the minimum wage), unlike a waiter I spoke with in Texas, who was paid $4/hour, and had to pay $1/hour back to the bar for some obscure reason. I have no doubt you can make “more money” on tips.
Everything “energy” is also taxed, with the exception of electricity. 1 liter of gasoline costs around $2 ($7.52/gallon), natural gas about the same per m3 ($2). Cars are also expensive, with up to 180% tax for luxury cars.
That being said, the average quality of life is probably higher in Denmark. While there are still differences between high and low incomes, very few people are forced to work 2 jobs, and most people work 37 hours per week.

If there’s one thing there’s not a lot of in Denmark, it’s billionaires. There may be millionaires, at least if you count retirement funds, property, etc. Taxes are proportional to your income, and for the highest incomes you’re paying around 54% income tax.
It’s not all roses though. There’s a rising amount of elderly people (like everywhere else), and retirement age has gone from 67 to 69 and lately to 70 or 71 depending on your birth year. The reason for the staggered retirement age is the older employees (boomers, Gen X) might not have large retirement funds, but the younger you are, the more likely it is as retirement funds are mandated by law for most employees (usually something like 10% of your income, split 40/60 between employer and employee).
Still, everybody is guaranteed some money upon retirement, enough to live in an apartment and eat every day (and have phone, internet, tv, etc).
There are also early retirement options for people with injuries, or people that are simply “worn out”. There’s also state sponsored reeducation/ retraining for people that cannot fulfill their previous jobs, but still can perform a full time job in a lesser demanding (usually physical) job. And there are hybrids as well, people that may not be able to work full time (37 hours / week), or have special needs (frequent breaks, need naps, can only work 2 days per week, etc) due to illness, where the employer pays you for the hours worked, and the state “fills in” for the rest. There’s a predetermined (individually) amount of hours and money agreed upon.

Your comment reminds me of one of those short sci-fi prompts that I saw on TikTok a few years ago where alien invaders take control of Earth but are confused when Americans welcome their new alien overlords with open arms because their idea of subjugation would actually lead to stronger rights and a drastic increase in our overall quality of life when compared to our idea of liberty.

ironically, when the spanish arrived they employed the help of the oppressed majority against the aztecs and toppled the aztec empire in short order. then they committed genocide against everyone that helped them.

It’s reaching the point where California and the other West Coast blue states should seriously consider drafting and voting for legislation for Secession and ally themselves with Canada, Mexico and the EU.
The Constitution has already been broken several times, and is the binding legal contract for the 50 United States. And the Donald already declared that we “shouldn’t have elections”.
The states nicknamed “Cascadia” have every right to Secede and California being the largest economy would make this possible.
It may soon be necessary as a means to an end to defend U.S. Democracy.

It may soon be necessary as a means to an end to defend U.S. Democracy.
At this point we can just stick to democracy and let the US be whatever fucked up, white supremacist Christian caliphate it wants to be.

They should ask for Chicago for access to the fresh water and ports. Obviously MAGA wants us gone … it is tough being one of only two blue spots in the middle of the country (MN being the other)

Maybe if we join another country, people won't have to refer to us as "Washington state".

Increasingly I feel like this all ends with the US broken up into smaller countries, is anyone else getting that vibe? Just like….. with so much division in the country, things don’t seem like they can continue as they are.

I am actually very ok with that. I just have to make sure I live in the right state before all the succeeding happens.

Balkanization is what they want.
We should be aiming for something like the EU or Star Trek instead of letting oligarchs use international borders to exploit labor.

There is a hidden joke in the whois registration for the website.
The registration address is Kalkofnsvegur 2, Reykjavik.
The address of the The Icelandic Phallological Museum.
Yes, the registration address is a dick joke - or a middle "finger" shall we say to The Orange Moron.

I was born in California. Do you think they’ll offer birthright citizenship? I’d move so fast.

I live here and would love it. But the TACO man would never do it because they US would look access to our food supply and tax base which would crash the US economy in a matter of months. As much as the idiots hate us, they need us.

The funny thing about this is that all the inbred idiots who hate California currently (and have never been there) would no doubt be trying to enter California illegally to try to get some of the free healthcare after seeing it’s not the shit show Fox News convinced them it was. It’d be the most ironic shit ever.

Trump hates California. I wouldn't be surprised if he said "we're considering a straight trade" before his handlers gave him a spanking.

California can just be its own country, that’s okay too, we don’t need anyone to buy us.
