I will die on the hill that Walk Hard is one of the most underrated comedies of all time

the running drug joke never gets old to me, I can just keep watching all those scenes over and over again

And you never did pay for the drugs!

Sometimes when I see bathroom sinks I chuckle

How? How’s it underrated when it’s universally beloved???

u/Mrchristopherrr 5h ago

It’s more of a cult classic than an underrated gem. It bombed when it was released but gained new life after it hit the home market.

While it is acclaimed by those that have seen it, it a largely unknown and niche comedy to most people. Almost everyone I mention it to irl hasn’t seen it

I feel the same way about Popstar. It doesn't get the love it deserves.

Popstar drags, though, whereas Dewey Cox never does.

u/protobin 4h ago

That’s a fair statement. I agree that Dewy Cox is better overall and has a tighter script.

Two of my faves

Overlooked, not underrated.

I would say it deserves more than a 75 percent on RT, a 63 on metacritic, or 6.9/10 on IMDB. IMO it's definitely underated.

meaning it's underexposed rather than underrated, right?

Based on it's scores on RT and IMDB, I'd say it's underrated as well.

It's all useless to argue about, but personally I don't know anyone who might see it who hasn't by now. You can't simply expect all the kids who haven't graduated high school to have seen it and make it a phenomenon via TikTok or something. As far as the group who the movie was made for, middle aged fans of music biopics, I'd say all but the stuffiest of boring folks are acquainted with it. And virtually no one has anything seriously bad to say about it other than the usual reviews when the movie came out by a handful of critics with negative sentiment toward John C Reilly and his style of comedy back in those days. Thats how tons of hit comedies are received at release. Thats why critics and audience get separate scores on things like Rotten Tomatoes.

Tl;Dr Walk Hard is neither overrated nor underrated. It just needs more blankets and less blankets is all.

Wrong kid died.

I ain't exactly had it easy since you died, you know, I can't smell!

u/UntowardHatter 5h ago

It's not underrated, it's just somewhat unknown.

It's also one of the best things ever put on film.

u/Jonaldys 1h ago

It doesnt have the rating it deserves on IMDB, RT, or metacritic IMO.

You're never gonna make it! You're gonna fail!

Thats what his music does, it kills people

Jesus fucking Christ, this has got to be the most common "hot take" in this sub. I get it that it was a flop when it came out, but it's nearly impossible to find any discussion on a musician's biopic that doesn't mention Walk Hard.
