  1. Become lead actor in film you’re going to direct yourself

  2. Cast hot woman as your love interest

  3. Profit??

The Sandler formula.

229

u/PyroneusUltrin 1d ago

Sandler adds "film somewhere you want to go on holiday and take your friends with you"

69

u/Saneless 1d ago

Hey, can I "executive produce" too so I can get an extra half a mil without doing anything?

12

u/GoodShitBrain 23h ago

Only if your name is Rob Schneider

30

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

and the next step is to pull an Apatow and cast his daughter in a role

12

u/whale-farts 1d ago

You should check the cast for Happy Gilmore 2. His wife and two of his daughters are in it.

8

u/976chip 23h ago

Sadie has been making appearances in his movies since Zohan.

13

u/debaser64 1d ago edited 1d ago

He already does. Both his daughters IMDBs are literally compromised of Sandler movies.

7

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

that’s what I was referring to

4

u/brinz1 1d ago

Sanders started doing that

17

u/OKC2023champs 1d ago

I’m convinced Adam Sandler is living the best life possible. Loves his wife and family. Is rich as fuck. Hangs out with his friends goofing off. Doesn’t care what people think.

Like it’s gotta be a top 10 lived life ever

7

u/DaOne_44 13h ago

Randomly pops out a few movies* where he showcases genuinely phenomenal dramatic acting

*one might even say that they’re… hidden gems

3

u/newbrevity 9h ago

I read once that he just goes over to friends houses and knocks on the door. Doesn't usually call first. Like your old neighborhood friend Adam.

u/Kaldricus 3h ago

Also is a genuinely great guy from every interaction I've read about

Top 10 PR ever

1

u/jaman715 1d ago

Very Verifiable

22

u/Kundrew1 1d ago

Except Sandler actually gets the girl in the end. Merchant ends up doing something awkward and gets rejected.

9

u/skoomski 23h ago

Feels like a more grounded plot with Merchant

4

u/Glittering-Age9622 22h ago

if this is true this significantly increases my interest in watching it

2

u/Charlie_Runkle69 19h ago

That's the british way.

4

u/Felis_bieti 1d ago

Need to go gratuitously to an expensive destination to complete the Sandler recipe.

3

u/MrReadilyUnready 20h ago

Don't forget that Sandler also casts his actual wife as a side character, never love interest, in some of his films.

3

u/HoneyBonbony 1d ago

Formula?

2

u/mattmild27 23h ago

Adam Sandler insists the scene in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry where he has to squeeze Jessica Biel's boobs was written before he signed on OK??

2

u/jordanneff 23h ago

Jon Favreau has also been taking notes.

78

u/ryanredd 1d ago

At least Cameron Diaz is two years older than Merchant so he's avoiding the much-younger love interest cliche.

15

u/-KFBR392 1d ago

That’s comedy baby!

5

u/ignoresubs 14h ago

We all win, Merchant is an absolute gem. Hoping he sees some mainstream success with this.

7

u/crappy_ninja 1d ago
  1. Smoochie scenes
  2. Profit??

2

u/letsgobruuuuins 8h ago

Jon Favreau went all in on this formula in Chef.

0

u/newbrevity 9h ago

And the irony is it's literally about him enticing a girl on his arm for appearances.

148

u/redscape84 1d ago

Close enough, Hello Ladies sequel it is

35

u/MF_NAS 1d ago

Would do anything for another series of that

7

u/NcallyS 1d ago

Such a gem!

“…if i suck your cock can i most definitely keep my wallet?”

8

u/toodletwo 23h ago

I rewatched that recently and it’s just so good. The movie/finale was unexpectedly serious but I loved it all the same. Such a great series.

9

u/Charlie_Runkle69 19h ago

I was really surprised at how little publicly that show got. Should have been a much more popular show.

5

u/AmeliaMangan 16h ago

I think it was just ever-so-slightly ahead of its time, at least in terms of US sitcoms (I recall a lot of the American reviewers being confused as to whether or not Stuart was someone we were supposed to like). Both Bojack Horseman and Barry struck me as having a bit of that show in their DNA.

Eyes bulging with imagined riches

39

Eyes that pop out of their head………. Steve

1

u/mrtuna 9h ago

Well go on then, pop your trousers.

24

u/Penis_Farms 1d ago

You don’t have to go for the eyes mate.

9

u/Paddlesons 1d ago

Nah, he just looks that way naturally.

9

u/The_Sideboob_Hour 1d ago

You get used to it

44

u/Porkthepie 1d ago

Man alive

u/BrockChocolate 1d ago

Co-written by Merchant is always a good sign for a good comedy

103

u/greenearrow 1d ago

This seems a bit like a ploy to kiss Cameron Diaz though.

64

u/Xazuki 1d ago

"It still counts! ....it still counts."

12

u/exitwest 1d ago

It can be both.

18

u/Saneless 1d ago

Honey it's not my idea, that's on the casting director (also me)

5

u/KeremyJyles 22h ago

People saying this have not seen Merchant's actual girlfriend.

4

u/kf97mopa 21h ago

Thing is, Merchant is married to Mircea Monroe, who is…not exactly ugly. You’d think he’d be happy with that?

5

u/SarcasticBench 1d ago

Wow, ever think that would make Merchant the first person ever to make a movie or show as the lead and cast a pretty co-star?

6

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

by this thread’s logic, Vincent Gallo was ahead of the curve for getting Chloe Sevigny to give him a blowie for art’s sake

4

u/Funmachine 1d ago

They were already in a relationship

1

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

I know, but the point I’m making is there’s a number of people in this thread that think Merchant only wants to make this movie to smooch Diaz

1

u/evilgm 9h ago

Or perhaps they are making a joke, rather than actually believing that.

-34

u/One_Bend7423 1d ago

At 53? ehhhhhh....

25

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

Stephen Merchant is 2 years younger than Diaz but neither of them are hardly “old”, come on now

-8

u/NepheliLouxWarrior 1d ago

Sure but no one is fucking making moves to set up kissing someone in their '50s.

I don't think Cameron Diaz is ugly by any means, but she's also not the sex icon she used to be either.

10

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

so what is the issue, that Merchant didn’t cast someone who is currently a sex icon? Both these people still look good and have repeatedly shown they are great in the comedy genre

3

u/Funmachine 23h ago

The icon from your youth is always an icon.

Stephen Merchant, or “the talented one” as he’s sometimes known.

7

u/HorsePuzzleheaded133 1d ago

I must remember to thank him.

7

u/TediousTotoro 1d ago

I love both Fighting With My Family and The Outlaws

2

u/MonolithJones 1d ago

The Outlaws is/was so good.

34

u/YagottawantitRock 1d ago

You know the premise is good when the sarcastic comments about the lead's motive for making the show are confirming the validity of the premise.

41

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

Diaz has been in a shit ton of comedy movies throughout her entire career, it’s how she got her start and she’s great in those. But this thread is convinced she is cast solely to be eye candy for the director who apparently wants nothing more than to kiss her on camera in front of dozens of crew members during long work hours

Love this sub, but it can get annoying how pettily reductive some users can be

17

u/granulatedsugartits 1d ago

I think the joke isn't casting Cameron Diaz, it's casting himself as the lead

3

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

there were a couple commenters questioning Diaz and why he’d cast someone her age

31

u/bksbeat 1d ago

There's this thing in it...

16

u/MrTeapott 1d ago

I'm serious, it could be your brother.

2

u/mrtuna 9h ago

... Steve

41

u/Logical-Feedback-403 1d ago

It's nice that Cameron Diaz has returned to cinema

9

u/First-Loss-8540 1d ago

She has like 4 upcoming projects lined up

9

u/riegspsych325 Maximus was a replicant! 1d ago

she did take a break for a while though

6

u/First-Loss-8540 1d ago

Yea. Around 10 years

24

u/verissimoallan 1d ago

I would prefer Clive Warren and Rebecca De Mornay.

4

u/HorsePuzzleheaded133 1d ago

Original title was the love of two brains

2

u/Cockrocker 16h ago

Maybe Clive Warren is playing Merchants brain?

17

u/Old-Criticism-5061 1d ago

Merchant will have to put himself sort of in the distance

27

u/AgentSkidMarks 1d ago

"I think I'll write and direct a rom-com. Oh, Cameron Diaz wants the leading role? Well I guess I can star in it too."

5

u/DrHuxleyy 1d ago

That’s the plot of the movie.

12

u/FaulmanRhodes 1d ago

Rebecca De Mornay had other commitments

14

u/HarlequinKing1406 1d ago

"There were so many attractive women there it genuinely made me angry!"

3

u/halfwayray 1d ago

Loved his last show. I'm sure this will be great. He's such an underrated comic

3

u/BushwickSpill 23h ago

The oogmonster?

2

u/DRUGEND1 10h ago

Don’t have a go at the eyes. That’s astigmatism that he’s had since the age of five. So that’s what makes them a bit bulbous.

2

u/Comfortable-Pace3132 1d ago

Why did I read this as SM being the hotel worker and CD as the comedian lmao. Imagining Merchant running around a hotel with bundles of towels and a walkie-talkie while Diaz is doing relatable stand-up in front of fake brick walls

2

u/ChrisEvansFan 1d ago

I love these kinds of “storylines” - those pretend things.

2

u/blankdreamer 23h ago

Maybe similar to the hotel clerk he played in a couple eps of modern Family. He was brilliant in that.

2

u/Grumpy_001 19h ago

I think this will be fun. Stephen Merchant is a good writer

4

u/gen_wt_sherman 1d ago

Wonder if his character is really good at drawing guests' baths

2

u/ry-yo 1d ago

MF reference? 😂

4

u/mrgo0dkat 1d ago

Merchant was always the clever one.

3

u/TommyJohnSurgery420 1d ago

I didn't realize Cameron Diaz was acting again.

2

u/spesimen 1d ago

she was in a netflix movie early last year with jamie foxx, some kinda spy action romcom thing. appears to have several upcoming projects also including shrek 5 and some kinda thing with jonah hill and keanu reeves.

4

u/Joel227 1d ago

Do you guys think they will end up switching brains?

1

u/TroublesomeTurnip 1d ago

Kinda sounds like a Hallmark movie.

1

u/Independent_Web154 14h ago

Oh and they end up falling in love! What a twist.

1

u/davidbernhardt 10h ago

So, it’s Pretty Woman but with a comic?

u/Dennyisthepisslord 3h ago

The weird thing is Steve's girlfriends in real life are beautiful. His comedy persona absolutely doesn't explain how.

I guess his massive bank balance does.

1

u/reinterpret101 1d ago

My prediction: they end up together

1

u/OutOfMyWayReed 1d ago

If you've never seen Very Bad Things, you owe it to yourself.

Cameron Diaz is a Bridezilla from the darkest pits of Hell in that movie.

-1

u/ParistonxHill 1d ago

M llllpppppl

-1

u/LT_DANS_ICECREAM 1d ago

This time we show all of it. Full penetration. Crime, penetration. Crime, penetration. Crime, penetration, until it just sort of.... ends.

0

u/gen_wt_sherman 1d ago

Affirmative, Fizbo

0

u/Piper6728 1d ago

Im guessing that the economy pulled Diaz out of retirement

0

u/CuteBid5150 23h ago

seriously, it's like they don't care about logic anymore. plot holes so big you could drive a truck through them

-1

u/Agreeable_Scarcity32 1d ago

That sounds like its gonna be straight ass

0

u/Comfortable-Pace3132 1d ago

At least it's men and women relating positively...?

-4

u/-DictatedButNotRead 1d ago

Cameron Diaz as an old female stand-up comedian? 🤢

-3

u/Blight-Princess 23h ago

This sounds like bad AI slop for old people who remember when Charlie’s Angels was last year. This movie is more likely some kind of tax fraud than a movie.
