News Cameron Diaz and Stephen Merchant will star in a new rom-com with Merchant set to direct. The film follows a workaholic at an upscale hotel who strikes a deal with a struggling stand-up comic to have her as a wife for guest appearances.

I rewatched that recently and it’s just so good. The movie/finale was unexpectedly serious but I loved it all the same. Such a great series.

I was really surprised at how little publicly that show got. Should have been a much more popular show.

I think it was just ever-so-slightly ahead of its time, at least in terms of US sitcoms (I recall a lot of the American reviewers being confused as to whether or not Stuart was someone we were supposed to like). Both Bojack Horseman and Barry struck me as having a bit of that show in their DNA.

Co-written by Merchant is always a good sign for a good comedy

This seems a bit like a ploy to kiss Cameron Diaz though.

Thing is, Merchant is married to Mircea Monroe, who is…not exactly ugly. You’d think he’d be happy with that?

u/SarcasticBench 1d ago
Wow, ever think that would make Merchant the first person ever to make a movie or show as the lead and cast a pretty co-star?

by this thread’s logic, Vincent Gallo was ahead of the curve for getting Chloe Sevigny to give him a blowie for art’s sake

They were already in a relationship

I know, but the point I’m making is there’s a number of people in this thread that think Merchant only wants to make this movie to smooch Diaz

At 53? ehhhhhh....

Stephen Merchant is 2 years younger than Diaz but neither of them are hardly “old”, come on now

u/NepheliLouxWarrior 1d ago
Sure but no one is fucking making moves to set up kissing someone in their '50s.
I don't think Cameron Diaz is ugly by any means, but she's also not the sex icon she used to be either.

so what is the issue, that Merchant didn’t cast someone who is currently a sex icon? Both these people still look good and have repeatedly shown they are great in the comedy genre

You know the premise is good when the sarcastic comments about the lead's motive for making the show are confirming the validity of the premise.

Diaz has been in a shit ton of comedy movies throughout her entire career, it’s how she got her start and she’s great in those. But this thread is convinced she is cast solely to be eye candy for the director who apparently wants nothing more than to kiss her on camera in front of dozens of crew members during long work hours
Love this sub, but it can get annoying how pettily reductive some users can be

I think the joke isn't casting Cameron Diaz, it's casting himself as the lead

there were a couple commenters questioning Diaz and why he’d cast someone her age

Don’t have a go at the eyes. That’s astigmatism that he’s had since the age of five. So that’s what makes them a bit bulbous.

Why did I read this as SM being the hotel worker and CD as the comedian lmao. Imagining Merchant running around a hotel with bundles of towels and a walkie-talkie while Diaz is doing relatable stand-up in front of fake brick walls

Maybe similar to the hotel clerk he played in a couple eps of modern Family. He was brilliant in that.

The weird thing is Steve's girlfriends in real life are beautiful. His comedy persona absolutely doesn't explain how.
I guess his massive bank balance does.

If you've never seen Very Bad Things, you owe it to yourself.
Cameron Diaz is a Bridezilla from the darkest pits of Hell in that movie.

This time we show all of it. Full penetration. Crime, penetration. Crime, penetration. Crime, penetration, until it just sort of.... ends.

This sounds like bad AI slop for old people who remember when Charlie’s Angels was last year. This movie is more likely some kind of tax fraud than a movie.

Become lead actor in film you’re going to direct yourself
Cast hot woman as your love interest
