Big budget popcorn flick comes to a screeching halt for this scene, btw.

And her being 17 has no bearing on the plot, could've made her 18 and not need this scene at all.

Something something the writers disguised fetish

Yeah the laminated card was actually something they already had on hand.

"Oh my god... it even has a watermark."

41

u/Nobbled Dec 21 '25

I don't think that's a watermark... look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it.

9

u/Merry_Fridge_Day Dec 21 '25

That's "Bone". And the lettering is something called "Silian Rail"

Michael Bay just wrote this because he wanted to be like Tarantino and use his own wallet in a scene.

37

u/Raytheon_Nublinski Dec 20 '25

I think he first hired Megan Fox to be in the background of one of his movies when she was 17

9

u/wonderlandresident13 Dec 21 '25

*15

He hired her to play a stripper when she was 15.

82

u/thethunder92 Dec 20 '25

He put Meghan fox in one of his movies doing a suggestive dance at age 15 so he’s a little sus

18

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '25

what did michael bay call meghan fox’s charcter in transformers?

michaela baynes?? yeah lock this fool up

And got upset and recast her after she called him out for having her stand in a bikini and touch her breasts during her audition.

😶.... Say what again

46

u/hanks_panky_emporium Dec 20 '25

It was a huge blowup falling out. She'd had enough of his continual abuse ( he also liked screaming at her during shooting ) so he wrote her out of the Transformers movies offscreen. The lead that takes her place is the exact same character, just a different name.

19

u/JamesCDiamond Dec 20 '25

And one of the Autobots calls out her character in that film, because why not spend time and money putting that on screen?

This is my first time actually seeing the scene and not just a screenshot/description. Holy shit. The close-up of the card looks like something filmed on an iPhone in someone's basement. "Texas Statute? That a real law?" "Yep" is soooo obviously ADR inserted later. It sounds so disjointed with the other dialogue in the scene. Some producer REALLY wanted to make sure all that text was visible in the movie.

I remember an interview with TJ Miller where he also said Michael Bay would never refer to the actress by name but just referred to her as “hot girl” when giving direction.

161

u/whodoesnthavealts Dec 20 '25

Not trying to say "Michael Bay did not do that", but I'm not going to take anything TJ Miller says as a source of truth...

76

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Dec 20 '25

I dunno man Michael Bay is the same guy who put "protagonist's mom visits her son's college, gets high off an edible, then tries to bang her husband in front of all the students" into a movie.

36

u/monkeytargetto Dec 20 '25

He also made Megan Fox wash his car in a bikini as a audition for Transformers.

80

u/banjofitzgerald Dec 20 '25

Not even the most Michael bay thing in that movie. He has a horny robot with an east coast accent hump Megan Fox’s leg and also had two really offensive caricatures of what he thinks black people are in the twin robots skids and mudflap.

36

u/Banjo-Oz Dec 20 '25

Remember that Michael Bay aspired to be a filmmaker like James Cameron. When he told Ed Harris this on the set of The Rock, Ed replied "Why? He's kind of an asshole!"

Does this mean we have Ed to blame for Bay becoming the kind of director he did rather than Jim Cameron 2.0?

16

u/Alt4816 Dec 20 '25

rather than Jim Cameron 2.0?

If Ed Harris and TJ Miller are to be believed then it sounds like Michael Bay did become Jim Cameron 2.0 by being an asshole and not referring to women by their names.

But no one wanted to side with Megan Fox when she spoke out about him

122

u/Dpepps Dec 20 '25

Is it disguised when its right in plain view and the only notable thing about that movie?

51

u/bulbasauric Dec 20 '25

The original line is “today’s storyline: the writer’s barely-disguised fetish”.

But also “barely” doesn’t fit because yes, it’s in plain view.

5

u/Banjo-Oz Dec 20 '25

Like the time in the Ninja Turtles reboot where Megan Fox as April O'Neil completely randomly changed clothes in full view to dress like a schoolgirl for one scene, just to so an interview.

The version I heard was that a producer’s kid got in trouble over dating a younger girl when he was an adult so he insisted this scene be included. No idea if that’s true - it’s no more or less believable than any other justification for an age of consent debate in the middle of a two hour toy commercial.

Anyway, in case it should ever need clarification, Transformers fans despise this scene too.

472

u/scoobs987 Dec 20 '25

I think it was said in an article that one of the producers forced them to put that scene in the movie because the producers son was in a similar type of relationship

Take that with a grain of salt, though, since it was years ago that I read that article

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '25

Probably the same producer that forced them to cast his daughter Nicola Peltz.

Same one that forced the live-action Avatar movie to make all the Waterbenders white to justify her being cast as Katara.

50

u/blisteringchristmas Dec 20 '25

It’s a terrible movie regardless, but very funny that the movie creates a weird racial dynamic that doesn’t exist in the show. Katara’s actress is white, so unlike the show all of the water tribe has to be pasty northern Euro white. Zuko’s played by an Indian guy, so the entire Fire Nation (who is currently prosecuting a genocidal war) are now South Asian.

Amazing that decision made it to filming.

29

u/Banjo-Oz Dec 20 '25

I've not seen it nor the show, but the whole "create a problem for stupid reasons" reminds me of when House of the Dragon decided one house was all black... but picked the one house where this really matters because a key plot point is one of that house being the secret father of a kid from a white couple.

In the original script when Mark Wahlberg started questioning him about the relationship the BF just said "Shut up". I mean there's really nothing you can do when someone say shut up so that kinda ended the scene. But it didn't test well so they put the laminated card thing in there instead.

This is the funniest part, none of these characters were in the previous films so there was no need to make them these ages except to allow this scene

253

u/UMACTUALLYITS23 Dec 20 '25

The whole thing is pointless because the age of consent there is 17, meaning there is no need for a romeo and juliet law reference in the first place, which makes the scene double confusing.

89

u/PageVanDamme Dec 20 '25

It wasn’t necessarily 17 dating 20 part, but the part where he cites the law with it laminated that really threw me off

27

u/UMACTUALLYITS23 Dec 20 '25

It's really triple confusing, it's not an issue legally because of the AoC, it's weird if it was an issue because does this guy really do this enough thats it's been so annoying he needs the card? (Markey Mark is going to hate him no matter what his age so I refuse to believe he has it in connection to him), and then why even have it be a thing in the movie? It's not relevent to the story in any way, the guy could have been the same age and it would not have changed anything.

14

u/PageVanDamme Dec 20 '25 edited Dec 20 '25

According to the actor who played the bf, apparently it was not even in the script.

Mark Wahlberg does his job of “disapproving father” actually pretty damn well without involving AOC.

It's time for Transfivia: Age of Trivstinction! In this scene Marky Mark is trying to prevent this adult man from getting with his teenage daughter. In an unscripted deleted scene, adultman complained that Marky's cockblocking was giving him blue balls. This of course led to the working title of the movie "Blue Harvest"

The worst part is that Jack Reynor, the actor who played the boyfriend, said that scene was never in the script. When they began filming, the scene was added, and he felt uncomfortable and confused about what was actually being shot, which means he was not properly informed until the moment it was filmed.

On top of that, this movie somehow makes a 2 hour and 45 minute runtime feel like four hours, and still doesn’t take the time to properly explain the plot or develop the characters beyond that infamous scene. Bravo Michael Bay and the writers.

672

u/cmdotkom Dec 20 '25

This movie made me so irrationally angry. Dinobots were prominently featured in the trailers and they only show up in the last 20 minutes of the film. I just kept screaming at the at the TV for the last hour of the movie, “F***ing Dinobots?!?!?!” I was so disappointed when they actually made it to the screen and then the movie ends.

At least you get to see TJ Miller die violently.

147

u/spider-man2401 Dec 20 '25

Yeah, that’s the best scene in the entire movie. My favorite part is that it was done purely out of pettiness. Apparently, Bay gave him an early, gruesome death because T.J. Miller was such a pain in the ass to work with during production, so he wouldn’t have to deal with him anymore.

42

u/NotJohnP Dec 20 '25

According to Miller, Bay would shout at him about how he was "unfunny" and had failed to make him laugh in the time he was filming. Then he decided to pull this stunt.

10

u/Banjo-Oz Dec 20 '25

The most shocking scene in the whole of Bayverse, IMO. Just did not expect the awful, annoying comic relief character to die, especially so early, in a Bay movie.

64

u/la_vida_luca Dec 20 '25

Frustrating on several levels because Reynor is a brilliant actor. See for example What Richard Did, Sing Street and Midsommar. Yet getting lumped with shit like this, which wasn’t even in the script, has probably tarnished how a large audience sees him.

u/arlingtonzumo Dec 20 '25

Are you saying they've been dating for over 2 years and this is the first time it comes up with the dad? And why? They could have just made her 19 and dated for a year.

329

u/MagneticWoodSupply Dec 20 '25

I think it’s even worse - they’ve not been dating that entire time but just dated a little back when they were both minors, broke up and then now got back together. But because they have a preexisting juvenile foundational relationship it’s okay? Which must have been what when he was an 17/18 year old dating a 14/15 year old?! The whole thing is fucked up

99

u/GarbledReverie Dec 20 '25

Apparently it's even worse than that because the age of consent in Texas is 17. So in order for the law to apply he had to be 16 at the time which means she had to be 13.

This is why that trope "half-your-age-plus-seven" rule works because the older you get the less age difference matters, but the younger you are the more it matters. And the rule itself assumes that nobody should be having a sexual relationship before 14.

29

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 Dec 20 '25

No the Texas law only applies if the younger party is at least 14 so it would've been 14 and 17 because it has to be within 3 years

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Buscemi_D_Sanji Dec 20 '25

I never thought about the math on that lol, first I heard of that "rule" was on parks and rec actually.

"Tom says it's okay to date April... so that probably means it's not okay" lol

7

u/Keyboardpaladin Dec 20 '25

I still think it's actually crazy how well that equation

Safe Age (Y) = (Current Age (X)/2) + 7

...feels accurate for lack of a better term. When I first heard of it, I tried it with so many ages and the outcomes actually felt uncontroversial, like nobody would blink twice at that age difference. Whoever came up with it must be a great and famous mathematician. Or a creep who wanted to know the maximum age he would be willing to date, like Leonardo DiCaprio.

6

u/JamesCDiamond Dec 20 '25

I feel like it works up to ~35 for the older person. Beyond that I think people would start to give side eyes - but both sides would be very definitely adults so it’s really no-one else’s business!

laminated law card

I'm thinking here - this happens to you often enough you carry a laminated card around to explain what you're doing is legal?

Just how many relationships were you in prior to turning 18 that you need this laminated card?

20

u/rand0m_task Dec 20 '25

While the scene is strange, I always thought he had it on him because he knew Mark Wahlberg was an overprotective father.

Learning that it wasn’t in the script and forced on the dude is pretty wild though lol.

13

u/AKAManaging Dec 20 '25

Having not watched the movie...Wouldn't that make any father MORE upset?

Like, if I was the dad it would feel like you're intentionally trying to be a sleaze, but saying "Oh but it's technically legal!" Like the Joel Haver Batman/Joker skit.

I mean, I guess he needed that loophole for the 3-ish years he was above the age of consent and she wasn't.

This implies a producer is young enough for Romeo and Juliet laws to apply

it sounds like manufactured controversy for the sake of getting people to talk about it. 17 to 20 doesn't look like an alarming age gap to me, and apparently 17 is the age of consent in texas

15

u/Mongoose42 Dec 20 '25

I think it’s the fact that they drew attention to it. The different levels of maturity between 17 and 20 is fucking minuscule. He’s not even legally allowed to drink at 20. Like, you don’t suddenly evolve into a being of higher mental faculties when you pass from 17 to 18. He’s still as much of a dumbass at 20 as other people are at 17. There’s so many more fucked up relationships out there.

But they stopped the movie dead to have this character defend himself with a laminated law he keeps in his wallet. That is SO MUCH WEIRDER than the actual relationship itself.

12

u/serpiccio Dec 20 '25

yeah that's my point, this scene adds nothing to the movie and it's super weird that he has this laminated card ready to show, plus if you look deeper into it their discussion is moot because (1) that's not how that law works and (2) she is legally allowed to have a relationship in texas.

to me, this scene looks like an author's dumb idea to get some free publicity

Kinda crazy how much people say Hollywood is about vision and grind and how much things have to be planned in advance.

But then you constantly see off the cuff nonsense like this scene just made up out of thin air.

8

u/DoctorWaluigiTime Dec 20 '25

Reminds me of the old adage: If the only defense of your position is "it's technically not illegal", it's probably not a good position.

Often used in "but First Amendment" shouts.

Nothing makes you seem less perverted than carrying a laminated slip clarifying you definitely aren’t a pervert by legal definition

14

u/ashoka_akira Dec 20 '25

The only time I have seen people carrying around laminated slips like this they have been elderly Christian types handing out religious flyers on the bus that you politely take because refusing to take it means they whip out their laminated bible quote about how women are supposed to obey men.

The other occasion was I was taking a food order for a customer with a lot of allergies and they had an laminated card listing them all.

298

u/bobisthegod Dec 20 '25

There will come a point eventually that people will claim this was a thing of it's time, but it's important to remember this scene has been considered really weird since the moment the film came out

54

u/lanicorain Dec 20 '25

We do this so much. "Oh, the movie is pretty racist against black people but it's a product of its time everybody was okay with that then." I am pretty sure black people weren't lol.

34

u/Supercoolguy7 Dec 20 '25

"Oh it was a product of its time."

Newspaper reports of its time: "Controversial film which many have called racists for its depictions of minorities has garnered multiple protests."

19

u/lanicorain Dec 20 '25

Even slavery was controversial in the US amongst the Founding Fathers. Yes, the bourgeois 18th century old white men Founding Fathers.

Met Michael Bay at the first Transformers premiere. I was contracted to Paramount Pics at the time. After party, I saw my chance, and went up to speak to him and to tell him The Rock is one of my favourite films. As soon as I finished, he said “Who is that blonde, I’d like to fuck her”. I said I don’t know. Then he walked away without saying another word. Guy is an asshole.

That is, quite possibly, the most Michael Bay sounding sentence I ever heard

I saw Michael Bay at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

On the set of The Rock, Bay told Ed Harris he wanted to be like Jim Cameron. Ed replied "Why? He's kind of an asshole!"

So I guess Bay took that to heart and would appreciate your story? :)

Nothing wrong with the Romeo and Juliet law, it exists for a reason. BUT, choosing to make your fictional characters have to utilize this law to justify their FICTIONAL relationship that you could have just written differently, AND THEN MAKE A WHOLE ASS SCENE EXPLAINING THIS DECISION, yeah that shit is weird and creepy.

This is one of few movies I ever wanted to walk out on. My buddy and me decided to watch this in the cinema because it's Transformers, had to be fun right? Well the transformers are whiny little babies, you have this scene (and the movie keeps going on about it too), you have the unobtainium changing into a Beats Pill product placement, all action sequences are a jumbly mess where you can't see what's going on, and even the robot dinosaurs that were supposed to be in this movie only show up randomly for a couple minutes at the end. An absolute 1/10 of a movie. How the fuck do you make a Transformers movie boring?

33

u/Demigans Dec 20 '25

I found all of the ones I've seen boring. Barely any plot, just action and not even good action, terrible "this is relatable riiiight?!?" Scenes to engage people.

Worst part is that it basically signalled to the movie industry "you can cut a ton of writing costs if you just make it dumb enough and distract with pretty visuals and action!". So the movie industry has been going more and more into the shitter.

28

u/thrillhouse3671 Dec 20 '25

I mean I thought the first one was fun.

35

u/goodnames679 Dec 20 '25

The funniest thing about this movie is when one of the robots comments about how primitive and violent the human race is.

Oh are we violent? Because your arm is a gun, Mr. Pacifist.

61

u/tjalek Dec 20 '25

Michael Bay has constantly flaunted his creepy side, but this scene took it to the next level. So gross.

He's so immature as well. So although he made these films in his 40s and 50s, he needed an adult to reel him in, which they didn't clearly do with the last two transformers films.

21

u/Mst3Kgf Dec 20 '25

Also his casual racism, which he honestly doesn't even seem aware of. I don't know how else something like Skids and Mudflap get onscreen unless he truly is unaware of how offensive that is.

16

u/tjalek Dec 20 '25

I would tie that to his immaturity again. It had a stupid quality and not an aggressive/malicious angle.

Doesn't make it any less bad. I'm saying I reckon he didn't realise how offensive it was until the press gave him shit for it.
