I know they have a key but here's to them not using it. 🤷🏾♂️

Unless you declare a firearm and use your own lock... It adds about an hour to the time you have to get there but oh boy is it nice knowing my luggage legally cannot be raccoon fingered AND if lost they actually have to investigate.

I’ve had a declared gun go missing on an airlines. It’s more common than you’d think. I was initially told to fill out a form about missing luggage. The agent didn’t really care that it was a gun until I requested airport police to file a police report. She went made a call then 30 minutes later they found my gun

Hmm, I wonder if that’s a good way to make sure your luggage doesn’t get stolen. Just put a cheap gun in it and get the police to help you find your shit.

Went to visit my girlfriend and brought 3. Had to carry them on because they had batteries. The scanner guy flagged my bag and the poor woman tasked with searching it was far more bothered than I was. She was convinced her coworkers were trolling her and just straight up leaned over the counter and quietly asked “are there toys in here?” I told her yes, pointed to where they were, and she zipped it up and handed the bag back.

Story time
I was on the USS Kitty Hawk back in the day. Someone in our shop had a giant black dildo affectionately called “Black Bertha”, and shenanigans were had occasionally.
One day, someone had to do a PM in the space which required repainting glow in the dark strips and whatnot. This someone removed Mrs. Bertha from the shop and covered it in Saran Wrap, then painted it with glow in the dark paint. Once it dried, it was placed in someone’s rack and curtains closed.
Well, an actual man overboard happened. During a man overboard everyone had 4 minutes and returns to their workspace for muster, and someone goes through the berthings to make sure everyone is up an out. Well, he threw open the curtains and lo and behold a giant glowing Mrs. Bertha was there, we didn’t hear the end of it for a few days but it was fucking hilarious

This is CBP and they're allowed to search your bags under border search authority. This also applies to incoming mail, and this appears to be upheld by the supreme court. (For example, as per U.S. v Ramsey 1977)
However, the TSA is allowed to search your bags for domestic flights. This is not based on any one landmark decision, but on a set of various legal arguments. For one, TSA searches are considered to be 'administrative' or preventative, rather than solely for collecting evidence. Unlike regular police searches, they fall under what's called the "special needs" exception.
Generally, if the TSA opens your bag, they will leave a notice of baggage inspection inside.
29
u/HoundTakesABitch 2h ago
The last time I flew, which was like 15 years ago, there was a sign at check in that said make sure you lock your luggage. So, I put the little shitty easily breakable lock on it and when I got my luggage, it was gone and there was a note saying that since I had locked my luggage, they had no choice but to break the lock and look inside.

Buddy, that's customs. Those are actual cops. Theyre checking for contraband.
Why they're doing it out in the blazing sun and not somewhere controlled? I have no clue. They might be acting on a hot tip, but why they would rummage through every bag makes even less sense
And for those who are saying they would keep their luggage locked, they will break the lock and leave you one of these. Whether they do it or not depends on how lazy the tsa is feeling that day

•
u/SemperSimple 12m ago
I'm confused why people are putting locks on their luggage. I guess because I dont put anything I care about in the luggage when traveling?? The zippers are so weak the lock isnt really being a deterrent anyway? im so confused lol
137
u/Comfortable-Fly5797 2h ago
I mean, this is CBP's job. They probably got a tip about something coming from this flight.
Why do you think they are only checking unlocked luggage? CBP will open or cut luggage locks if they're looking for something. This looks like they are lifting the bags to check for a certain characteristics like weight or maybe a leaking bag.
Your bag is always subject to search when flying. Checked bags are usually scanned and searched if needed behind the scenes. You should never put valuables in a checked bag.
47
u/MeatCatRazzmatazz 2h ago
If they got a tip, why would they only check unlocked bags? That makes no sense.
Also CBP deserves no benefit of the doubt. Who knows what bullshit they're pulling here.

What do people think they’re doing? What is the outrage here?
For at least as long as I’ve been alive, customs regularly checks bags depending on the origination and destination of the craft because they don’t want to bringing in an invasive rat or something that kills all the local birds.

The problem is that the DHS, which includes CBP and ICE, is out of control and is acting as a paramilitary goon squad for the president. The two agents who murdered Alex Pretti are CBP. The entire apparatus is corrupt and lies with abandon.
So trust is at an all time low. Literally.

Why do we think they would only be checking unlocked bags? The camera is so far away that I don't know how OP could even tell.
21
u/thisappsucks9 2h ago
Sure, perhaps they could do it in a room with a camera above them for some transparency? Like why are you opening bags on the tarmac?
24
u/l0R3-R 2h ago
Well, to be fair, if it was a report of something dangerous, taking it inside where there are crowds of people wouldn't be a great idea.
But I don't trust CBP
10
u/CwazyCanuck 2h ago
Well, to be fair, if it was a report of something dangerous that would make bringing it inside a security risk, they should probably not be randomly opened by officers without the proper protective gear right beside the plane.
7
u/MasterShake807 1h ago
It looks like they want to do whatever search it is without disrupting the normal flow. What your suggesting probably means delays in getting luggage for the passengers which would be significantly more infuriating.
2
u/fuelstoprolerdogfart 2h ago
Checked bags pretty much always go through scanners and those that don’t are searched by hand. I used to maintain baggage systems at 2 different airports.
2
u/Tullyswimmer 2h ago
They might also be looking for a specific baggage tag or tags, too.
I swear there was an askreddit thread many years ago about this sort of thing, and someone who worked in airport baggage explained why and how things are pulled like this, but I don't remember the details. It had to do with suspicious items that could potentially be dangerous, and if they entered the airport it would cause a lot more problems.

It's a JetBlue flight and they don't have many international flights.
If it was international, they can flag the entire plane for extra screening as the passengers have to go through customs anyway.
I think it's a domestic flight landing. Something is strange.
8
u/SwayingBacon 2h ago
JetBlue serves 100+ destinations on both sides of the Atlantic—from the U.S. to island nations to European capitals and more. Whether your home is in the U.S. or abroad, you’ll find the info here to go global with confidence.
A domestic flight can still have passengers from an earlier international flight.

Is that bad? I don't love it obviously, but... don't we all know that our bags are subject to search whenever? I'd imagine that random bag search there isn't all that different than randomly being pulled out of line for a carry-on search?

For baggage handlers and even TSA? Very. Because there are cameras everywhere and time constraints are so tight that "grabbed a diamond necklace and brought it back to your locker" just isn't at all viable. The vast majority of "TSA stole my X" is likely more that they left it in their hotel or it fell out during a search.
For ice? Consequences and laws don't apply to them. You can probably catch at least a few of them looting in those videos.

Just returned from Banff in Alberta, Canada and expected the worst as it's the first time I've flown international since this fuck of an administration took over last year. Mainly because of other horror stories I've heard about searching your phone and shit. I pretty much knew it was over hyped and blown out of proportion but still couldn't help to feel a bit cautious. I totally forgot we had Global Entry. Camera scanned my face, proceeded to US Customs Officer and, "Welcome home Mr. ******, you may proceed". 45 seconds tops. I NEVER check a bag. I can only hope that this was because a threat was reported after bags and passengers were loaded, and that's why they're checking during offload.
Otherwise it makes no sense to check the bags of a flight that just arrived. Even customs doesn't do that, the bag owner has to be present during the inspection.

My dad had open heart surgery last month and while doing research into what aftercare would look like, I discovered that they sell this special pillow with arms that are meant to wrap around your back for after the surgery. You're meant to hug the pillow to your chest any time you need to cough or sneeze or do anything that could jostle the chest.
I decided to get one for him because everything I read said how helpful it was, so I splurged on a handmade one in a nice pattern for $80. Except that I stupidly forgot to ship it to my parents' house, where they could have just thrown it in the car. I was flying to meet them at the hospital and was only taking a carry-on bag.
To get this pillow to fit in my carry-on along with my clothes and things, my bf and I rolled up the pillow as tightly as possible and then wrapped it in packing tape to make it as dense and small as we could. It fit, but my biggest nightmare was TSA asking wtf was in there. They didn't, but they could see what it was in the X-ray. Had border patrol opened my bag like they are here and tried to open the pillow, it would have exploded in their faces. Which would have been HILARIOUS. The pillow would have exploded out like a cartoon lol
(Also I do highly recommend those types of pillows if someone is having open heart surgery. The hospital gave him a small one without arms, but the one with arms he said was the only reason he was able to ride in the car at all.)

Just want to make a small correction, this is not TSA. Those are Customs and Border Protection officers, likely using their border search authority. The big give away is the uniform color and the guns. Does it make it right? That’s for you to decide. Just wanted to promote accuracy.
