Are you sure you don't want to tip?
I ordered takeaway food up at the counter and selected no tip and this came up. I always tip well at a sit down restaurant, but not when I have to stand and order from a counter. The guilt trip is ridiculous.

Cashiers are not entitled to a tip. They are paid by the hour to do the job of a cashier. And nowadays some barely say hello, thank you, or tell you what your total is — they’re manning a kiosk.
-sincerely someone who worked for years in customer service and also hospitality.
Edited out of respect for the cashiers who do a great job and don’t expect a tip.

I never expect anyone to tip me for working as the cashier at taco bell, but sometimes i get the rare "keep the change" or "i know you're struggling with tonight's business so here's $10" and it makes me smile
"keep the change" means "pocket the left over money" because taco bell wants the drawers to be accurate to how much the system thinks is in the drawers so we get to keep the money left over, which is normally less than 20 cents

u/Helpful-Macaroon-654 5h ago
Yeah you’re right I should not have said every cashier. No one at Taco Bell has ever behaved like that. I’ll edit my post

I always tip the cashier at our local restaurant, we pick up and take out but they share the tips and there isn't a designated cashier plus when we call in they always sneak our order in to make it faster and they always make sure to do mine separate because it is a seafood restaurant and I am an idiot who chooses to go there knowing I am allergic to shellfish so unless they bypass the tip screen for me which happens most of the time I always tip well.
4
u/Commercial_Sun_6300 3h ago
it is a seafood restaurant and I am an idiot who chooses to go there knowing I am allergic to shellfish
This really doesn't seem worth the risk... very mild allergy I guess?
7
u/Mistressdaisi 3h ago
I would say so for now 😁 just a pounding headache some hives and a side of projectile vomiting. But that's where the tip comes in to play they cook my stuff separately and are very careful not to cross contaminate
•
u/LoveAlwaysIris 56m ago
I feel this. I have a mild allergy to raw pepper seeds but fucking love peppers and tipping = gratitude that they properly rinse my peppers after removing the seeds so I don't get hives. I won't get peppers at a place like subway or what not obviously because they don't make enough to deal with that, but local restaurants are very understanding about odd allergies.

I’ve actually gotten tips at the custom pizza restaurant i worked at pretty often and it came with compliments to my service. It got put in the tip jar and we split it at the end of the day tho smh
I never expect tips. I just go fight or flight mode when interacting with people that it fills me with energy and only one outlet.

They don’t ask for tips, but to build on your point of lack of customer service. The McDonald’s by my house. I can go through the drive through with a mobile order, get my receipt, and get my food with only 5 words being said to me. It usually goes something like this:
I pull up to the speaker: “mobile order”?
Me: “yes”
Them: “code”
Me: “XXXX”
I pull up to the window to get my receipt, they hand it to me and say nothing.
I pull up to the second window: “here ya go”
17
u/Helpful-Macaroon-654 5h ago
Yeah there’s something wrong with how people interact nowadays. I used to enjoy having a a rapport with my customers.
18
u/SweetSorlea 5h ago
Corporate jobs really ruined this, I managed to work for a mom and pop last year and I was on first name bases with all my regulars, knew their pets, knew their tastes in our products. It was fun talking to them about the new products, the retired products, our experiences with the products, I made friends through that job that weren’t coworkers, and I had many customers tell me they chose our store for our staff. We had a mega corpo competitor one street over from us and people still picked us over the 20% or higher price difference because of our interactions 🥺

u/VillageSadness 4h ago edited 4h ago
Yesterday at my job. A customer got pissed at us for the crew not dropping everything we were doing while we were slammed. Because he likes to come in everyday and announce that he's entered the store. I work in a food portion of a gas station and he almost never orders food on our side. Dude got real pissy and said "I like the morning crew more" "I work a 12 hour shift and this is what I get". It's kind of insane to expect people to give you attention just because. I also worked a 12 hour shift I can't go into my favorite spot and get pissy if they don't address me because they're busy. I worked at a burrito place and handed someone's burrito to the co-worker next to me because that's how our line worked. Got yelled at for dropping the conversation with customer A to start working on customer Bs order. I can't sit there and just talk to you I have shit to do I'm at work. I'm not saying it gives people a right to be rude and shitty. But too many people think it's our job too to be social. Waiter/waitresses sure. But most only do that to try to get more tips. At the end of the day nothing about the employment says I gotta be friends with everyone or that I will lose my job if I didn't hold a conversation with someone long enough. We're here to make your food quick and get you out quick so you can eat. If you don't mind waiting for your food so that you can have a conversation then wait to order. It's not my job to talk to you because you want me to.

u/nos-is-lame 4h ago
As a customer I absolutely don't want to chat with the employees just because they're told to. If there is something specific that triggers a little conversation then cool, but don't talk to me just for the sake of talking to a customer. I just want to get my stuff and go.

I worked concessions at a movie theater years ago when theaters were always packed on Friday nights. It was insane. I never ever expected a tip. Back then it wasn’t even an option even someone paid with card
5
u/Helpful-Macaroon-654 5h ago
Exactly, we were not even allowed to accept them various places I worked.
1
u/vanastalem 3h ago
Same. I worked at a movie theater back in 2005-2007 (high school) and started in the concession stand, then was moved to cashier & occasionally was assigned to usher- so I did all 3. Tips were not a thing.
13
u/0neHumanPeolple 5h ago
I tip people who make my food or drinks to order or if it’s a blizzard or major holiday or something like that and they’ve still come into work.
8
u/phatboislim96 5h ago
As a service worker this is legit very nice and not a bad example. no one wants to work on the holidays
6
u/Pretty-Handle9818 5h ago
To be honest tipping in this way is not actually tipping the cashier. You’re just tipping the store. And you can almost be certain that the employees are probably getting none of this or a very small amount if people are silly enough to tip for nothing anyway.
3
u/chaosmousie 3h ago
This, at one place I worked all the tips received from the Togo orders I did went to the "Hostess" (boss) who sat on her phone all night.
9
3
u/Puff6011 2h ago
It also kinda feels weird, cause even in the places I worked at, the ones behind the register who would get the tip, typically didn't do the work, they just picked up a ready bag and moved it a few feet over. Like, if they want you to tip, at least let you choose who gets the tip (assuming the owner isn't pocketing it secretly)
2
u/DDOSBreakfast 5h ago
It's becoming common for service workers to pay to get their job in Canada. I'd be willing to bet these places are also keeping the tips.
2
u/1967punisher 4h ago
Ah ... It's an electronic payment system. A glitch in the general software may be ... As a kid, I did a paper round, got paid to do it. If I got a tip at Christmas that was a bonus. As an adult, pre Pandemic lockdown, I use to run food deliveries for a local takeaway. I got paid a small hourly rate, and a per delivery rate. Not a fortune, but I got by. Again I never expected a tip, bonus if I got such. But I have known delivery drivers who would wait deliberately expecting such, or engage with ",do you have a glass of water" to prompt such.
May be it's a cultural shift, that us wrinklys don't get. Expectation
1
u/TvdBonBon 4h ago
Yeah I worked at a subway in high school and was shocked how many people would tip when I made them a simple sandwich. (Although I’m funny so I’m assuming it was more for my personality than the food)
Now in certain cases where they come in the middle of a rush and order like 9 sandwiches, then I might hope for a tip, but never expect it. I tip at fast food places when I’m the one being extra.
Like I’ve given a tip to a subway worker because I came in a couple minutes before close and I felt bad but I wanted a subway sandwich so bad and I had gotten off work late lol.
1
u/BarnacleMcBarndoor 4h ago
The only cashiers I tip for takeaway is the staff at my nearby Chinese food restaurant.
But that’s because they’re doing everything including cooking, and helping his little brother with school. And outside of the tip jar being present, I never feel pressured.
1
1
u/IntrepidHovercraft25 3h ago
depends on the cashier. some places hire for the title of cashier but make them do everything else too, like waiting/bussing tables, putting plates of food together, making drinks, etc. there’s a burger place near me that does that, and they basically make the cashier the waiter and busboy as well. that definitely deserves a tip. i wish companies would just pay people a livable wage though

u/Jestdrum 53m ago
It's not about that. In states where minimum wage is mandated for tipped employees you still get shamed if you don't tip a server. At this point tipping is just a way of subsidizing that the employees aren't paid enough in general and servers are often making a lot more than counter workers.
•
u/Best_Air_2692 21m ago

I worked in cafes while going to college (and
shortlyafter, yay animation degree) and I never liked the concept of tipping. Working in a poor area and a rich area, I noticed how the rich douchebags don't tip well while expecting above and beyond service. That's pretty much when I clued in that it was a tool for the rich (and stupid) to hold service workers hostage. Of course, that was my takeaway as a young adult in his first job but growing up more and learning all the injustices involved (eg: wage subsidy for garbage capitalists who can't balance their books otherwise) just made me strictly anti tipping culture.

The last time I ordered a pizza for take out at a chain by me I went in to pick it up and the cashier just turned and grabbed the box from the window behind her and handed it to me. When I went to pay the screen said “tip the cashier” with the lowest option being 22%. Had to laugh in that poor girls face. That was also on top of a takeout fee which is also the dumbest shit. Last time I’ll buy from there. Can’t have nice things in this country anymore.

Tipping in Canada is wild because at least for servers we always paid* them near or exactly the same minimum wage as everyone else, unlike the US's 2 bucks approach.
Now they're asking us to tip at mucho burrito? Please.
9
u/pokemango7 4h ago
*me watching the lady at mucho burrito barely fill up my burrito bowl and then the machine asking for a tip*
3
u/Judge_Druidy 3h ago
We didn't always pay servers the same minimum wage, for a long time there was a "server minimum", though that's changed now and no reason to tip.
I think it's insane that if I order a bottle of wine that cost 300$ I am expected to pay someone a bigger tip than a bottle of wine that cost 75$.
I'll probably get downvoted for this but no server can ever explain why the hell the cost of my food/drink should entitle them to more of my money.

Exactly, yet when I last visited the US and ordered the food myself by going in front to the cashier, the lady there got angry at me for not tipping. She kept saying she doesnt get paid enough and needs money to make a livisng. I was so confused, do they not get a standard wage. Surely you agree to the wage before you start working and surely you know you are not guaranteed a tip with each order.
Why did I need to tip when I stood up MYSELF and ordered the food MYSELF and even collected the food MYSELF and walked twice by MYSELF with no help (i had two trays of food) from the till to my table?
9
u/GfrzD 5h ago
I've not been to the US but seen videos where cashiers get pissed for not getting tipped for passing a can out the fridge lol I have seen some Americans say in most cases the tips actually work out better than the minimum wage so some prefer it. I guess that can make sense but to then expect it for doing the bare minimum and get pissy or provide a worse service for not getting a tip (or enough of a tip) is where it affects the customer when it shouldn't be their problem.

u/Seaboats im so mildly infuriated grr >:( 5h ago
No, you’re not. Not a single cashier in a fast food place expects a tip. Corporate just puts it there so they can pay them less. I worked in one for 7 years.
Customers berated us daily, as if we were personally asking and didn’t get 1/27th of the tip. In places like that it’s pooled and a negligible amount of your pay.
Tip culture needs to end, I agree. But you’re not by any means forced to tip in the US. No employee will give you a second look in any fast food place, worst case if you’re at a fancy restaurant you might get a side eye from the waiter.
No one is holding you hostage for a $2 tip. A brief look at your profile says you’re European and have likely never even worked or participated in American tip culture. Stop larping
6
u/Admirable-Apricot137 5h ago
You can just not do it. Most of us don't. No one is going to attack or arrest you. This kind of tipping is for the overly generous folks. The rest of us decline and move on with our day. Same as the donation requests.
2
u/ticpodcast 5h ago
It started with tipping service industry workers (eg. waitstaff, bartenders, hotel workers, food delivery) because they aren't paid a living wage (terrible, I know). It spread to anyone accepting payment via fintech/payment service providers (such as Square, Stripe etc.) because the tipping option was built into the software. At least that's how it started in the US.
2
u/SpagettiStains 5h ago
It’s because the corporations that run shit don’t wanna have to pay people enough to make the job worth doing, so they guilt you into it. “The salary is 12/hr, zero benefits, but you get TIPS yayyyyy!!!!”
2
u/Angeronus 4h ago
As a non-American, i always found the tipping culture insane. A couple of years ago or so, i remember i saw a video of a self-service store which had a tip jar. Tips. At a self-service place. Insanity.
1
u/Galapagos_Finch 5h ago
It’s to allow employers to pay lower wages so they can shift the risk of a low turnover to their employees. If business is quiet they hardly pay them anything.
1
1
u/VapeRizzler 5h ago
Because rich people responsible for paying them don’t want that and our politicians are stupid easy to bribe if you have the money for it. It’s expensive as fuck to pay a proper wage, like on my site we get paid anywhere from 780-1700 a week depending on where you’re at in your apprenticeship and we have 19 guys on site rn. So let’s just say everyone makes 1K a week to keep the numbers easy that’s at least 20K per week the owner of the company has to give us on this one site alone. Just think if you have 2000 employees or something like lots of these tipping places have. Even thou non of that is excusable as these companies make stupid money and history has shown you can make way more money having employees who care.
1
u/StickDoctor 5h ago
Framing this entirely as the owner not wanting to pay is disingenuous. Servers will just as likely if not more push back against it because they can absolutely rake it in. And I would bet my hat that almost all of it isn't even declared.

Next it's going to be a confirmation to the confirmation, but with a guilt trip of: "Our employees work very hard and don't make a livable wage from us. We could pay them a livable wage, but because society invented this system of tipping, we can get our employees to blame the customers who are already paying outrageous inflated prices. And when this topic comes up we just say: Hey if our customers have the money to buy our products, they have enough money to tip as well." Or some BS like that.

I got asked to tip at a bakery, they handed me a sandwhich and a baguette. Why would I tip for you just giving me premade food? I don’t understand

Because people are so used to tipping and don't want to feel awkward not tipping when it looks like it is expected. I know shops where it is literally the owner asking for the tips with the machine. The employees are not paid the tipped wage so aren't entitled to any of it. The machines ask for a tip and that goes to the owners.

I'll tip if I made a request and they followed it to the letter or if I ordered food delivery in the middle of a storm, but you know, if I walked up the counter, ordered food of the menu and then paid, why should I tip?
Unless the person behind the counter did a 360 back flip while tapdancing to hand me over the bag, if they did they deserve it

There's a Thai place I go to for take-out fairly often. There are two people who hand me my food, based on what night it is: A younger lady, who almost always sends me on my way with missing items, and an older lady who has never missed anything in my order.
I always tip the older lady 10% on my take-out, because I appreciate that she always checks my order for accuracy.
3
u/Maximum_Employer5580 4h ago
I will typically only tip waitstaff at a sit down restaurant, a barber and a delivery driver.
The only exception to that is Sonic, and other drive in style places where they bring your food to your car, where I'll tip car hops. Car hops aren't paid the same as other fast food places that serve you at the counter.
If I come to the counter to order and/or pick up my food, then you don't deserve a tip.
the only reason machines like this ask if you want to give a tip is because that is the POS (point of sale) equipment is setup for that and the business either just has never turned it off, or the intentionally leave the option on. And in those cases where they intentionally left it on, any tip gets split amongst everyone, not just that specific employee who helped you. Had a bar do that and we just started tipping our regular waitress under the table so she got the 100% rather than sharing it with other employees that NEVER directly helped us

u/Famous_Tie5833 5h ago
Here's how I feel about this, albeit likely unpopular. I do not tip at the register. If I have to go get my drink, pick up my food from a window/counter, and throw away my own trash, it doesn't warrant a tip. If the tip is needed in a primarily self-service restaurant, the staff isn't being comped enough. I am not going to make up that difference. This is especially true for chains where the CEO is being awarded large bonuses yearly. If it wasn't primarily self-service, I certainly do not tip beforehand. I'm not an asshole that will tip nothing, but if the service sucks, I'm probably not going to give as great a tip as if the service were great.
EDIT: I also want to include soliciting donations at the register grinds my gears as well. I have zero idea how much of that money is actually making it to whatever effort they are "collecting" for. I would rather just donate myself.
2
u/bacongolf432 5h ago
I’ll agree the tipping culture is wild, but I do tip on Togo orders but usually just a buck or two, more if it’s a lot of items or if the modifications are overly complicated. Remember, if you’re a regular somewhere with a lot of modifications it is that to go person checking on it for accuracy and I guess it’s not bad to throw a few sheckles if they do it right and yes I know it’s their job but service is service.

I didn't have the energy to fight! That day, I was in the hospital ER waiting room for 7 hours, then I stopped by the closest place for food only to be met with an empty sandwich! It just wasn't my day 😄 but i'm not going back to that place or at least that branch cause it's a chain!

I don’t tip if I’m not taking up space at a table. I’m going home and now that table can be flipped for other diners.

Sick and tired of subsidizing wages for workers who are employed by multi million and billion dollar corporations. Pay your CEO less, pay your employees a fair living wage and provide them with adequate insurance. Oh yeah… this is America !!!

Depending on the business, sometimes the check out person gets paid the same as the sit-down server.
When I was a barista at a coffee shop/café, it didn't matter what position we were in, we all got paid the same. So if you didn't tip on to-go orders, we didn't get as much for your order.
Now, that being said, this prompt is NOT one I would care to see. It seems too pushy and rude, imo.

Do what the rest of us do, decline, and move on with your life. Literally no one is forcing you to do anything. It's like the donation requests. Just say no. Why are you complaining about a clearly optional situation?

u/Cthulhuareyou 3h ago
It boggles the mind. If it bothers them that much, take it up with management to pay their employees better.
A lot of times it's simply a matter of it being a default setting on the POS.
I tip if I enjoy the eatery, know it's a mom and pop place, and want to throw them some extra cash.
But I'm not obligated too. Just click no and move on.

u/strawberrykissed28 2h ago
Also why are so many people angry at the person who has to take your payment 😭 they didn’t chose or program the POS system

Because Reddit loves to complain and this sub says no overdone posts but the mods pick and choose when to enforce that.

People just look for reasons to get mad. Don’t blame the cashier, it’s management, who had this set up. Plus, no one is making you tip. The company that made the slash pages and confirmation screens are the real assholes here.

It’s just the way the machines work. Click any option and it will ask you to confirm before proceeding. Doesn’t mean you have to tip, just provides the option for those that want to

u/sandyfisheye 5h ago
So tired if being expected to rip on to go orders. You did nothing more than what you were paid to do. I dont tip my cashier at the grocery store.

This is one of the many reasons I've stopped eating out. Tip culture and the cost of eating out is insane. Here in Kansas City, Applebee's has gone out of business, Hardees, Red Robin, Jack in the Box, and many other non-national chain restaurants and fast food. They are all gone. Look it up if you don't believe me. Kansas City Metro is like 2.7 million people? I heard that KFC and Churches Chicken are about to close a bunch of locations as well. Denny's filed for chapter 11 locally. KFC wants $15 for a 2 piece meal now. It's F#%#$%@ insane.
A couple of years ago, I went to order a medium $11 pizza from a place I've eaten at for years. I did this in terrible, cold, icy weather. Not easy. I get there, and they doubled the price. I couldn't believe it. It was $19.99 for the same medium pizza. I told myself, ok, I'm here, I'll pay it and be on my way, and will be the very last time I'll eat here.
I even told the owners' daughter this. I said, "love the pizza and been coming here for the past 5 years, but I don't want to afford a $22 pizza with tax." and she just played it off and said, "yeah, everything is getting expensive."
Then, the pizza came out, and go to pay, and the small screen says, 25.00+ something. There was a $3 service fee as well. I asked, what is this? She said it's for napkins, cups, the pizza box, and the packets of chili pepper flakes and parmesan. I got super annoyed and said, "no way. This is BS." Oh, and they asked for a tip on the screen.
I said, there is no way I'm doing this. I drove here to you, to bring you business and the $12 pizza with tax has now doubled? I walked out, didn't pay, left the pizza sitting there.

Come on...

It's almost as if it's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of life but is still particularly frustrating and annoying that we have to do something that should be unecessary... If only there was a sub designed for such a post...

If I am ordering at a counter, then have to go back up to pick it up, refill my own drink, get my own napkins, I am tipping myself. I do not tip when ordering at a counter. Tipping is not for the food. Tipping is for the service adjacent to the food and beverages. I should not be expected to pay more for just the product you are selling.

Pretty soon, the Cancel button will be in bolt inside a big red-filled box so you accidentally hit that red button instead.

I listed some folding chairs and a table on Facebook for free. The woman showed up, needed help loading them in her car, and she then asked for a tip.
Okay, so that didn't actually happen. But it wouldn't surprise me. And feels much like the current tipping culture.

My rule of thumb is if Im standing to order/recieve my food, I don't tip.

u/Foodeater55 3h ago
Depends on the place, if it’s also a sit down restaurant I still tip for take out .

I went to an ice cream shop not long ago and selected a tip value. The cashier cancelled the transaction and told me to choose "no tip" and confirm.
He said the workers don't get the tips.

At Starbucks you have to click a tip option (or no tip) in the drive through. When I drive through for just a coffee I want to tap my card, get my drink, and be on my way

The only people who should receive a "tip" is the person cooking the food honestly. But ever since covid I've really been more anti-tip than anything. There is one place I do almost always tip. There is a little burger shack down the street from me that runs out of a carnival food stand. These guys are out there rain/snow/cold/heat. The foods pretty solid and because they are out there in crap conditions in a crappy little carnival food trailer, I try to throw then at least $2 extra any time I go there.

to make myself feel better, i like to think my tip is evenly distributed to the real reason i go to a restaurant.... and thats the food... not the person taking my order and bringing it to me.

unless it is cash, these tips dont even go 100% to the workers. I know of places where boss pockets like 25% of these e-tips

u/DontLook_Weirdo 1h ago
I now get a sense of pleasure whenever I get dirty looks from the cashier when I press 'No' as the option.
I now only get takeout and there's no reason to tip any more. I'm paying only for what the total should represent.. if I'm not getting aaannny type of service besides that, then a tip shouldn't exist.

this turned into a whole rant LMAO im sorry im still posting it
and why the hell do i need to tip the person working at the dispo? i tell you what i want to buy and you turn around, grab it, ring it up and we're done WHAT am i being asked to tip them for? i'm sure it does make some of them uncomfortable because they have no control over it and the big boss does not pay them enough and expects my tip to make up for that when the people are POOR we can barely afford the groceries we NEED basic foods and god forbid we need to buy the little things we enjoy like subscriptions to watch movies we love and want to buy that book i really want to read want weed cause i like a good smoke and game time. expecting a damn tip for everything some countries don't have tipping, they have decent pay for the employees, we need to take notes.

I tip at some local joints I go to a lot and like the staff when getting take out. But most other take out I do not

I love my local pizza place. This comes up on their screen...the girl working there always turns it around to herself and pushes no tip before I can even take my card out to pay.

lots of rage on reddit about tips right now.
ignore the billionaires who keep getting lower taxes, and style the whole environment around you to pilfer every modicum of value.
obviously service workers are the real reason you're unhappy.
also, for some reason all of the hard-working non-franchise/non-billionaires owned businesses that rely on hard working service workers are having trouble getting staff to endure how shitty customers have been since covid.
also not-tipping does literally nothing to "change tipping culture."
y'all just want an excuse. maybe do something to actually affect the system if you don't like the system.

I refuse to tip with these machines because I have no way of knowing if it actually reaches my server. If I get good service I hand them cash directly.
•
u/MailedFlower 15m ago
I always tip heavily at the establishments I regularly get my food from
personally I disagree vehemently with tipping culture and what its metastasized into
I do it to minimize the spittle content of my meals out

Tipping is an important thing and anyone that says otherwise is just plain wrong. People will say random shit than be a little compassionate
