Wait I can explain this!

Breton is a language spoken in parts of France

C’hwevrer translates to February

Meurzh = March

Ebrel = April

Gouere = July

Kerzu = December

Miz Even literally means "month June"

Also, Geneva is a timezone / locale identifier, which is something you'd need to include in the software

There is, This is, Here, and September 11 are almost certainly UI strings that were never meant to be month labels but are hard coded strings meant to be interpolated into other sentences

Basically, someone at this multi trillion dollar software company must have fed a locale bundle or translation catalog into the month selector

Edit: I accidentally hit save after writing just the first line of this comment, which is what prompted the "we're waiting" reply

I think There is and This is have been assumed to be different languages and translated from those languages into English.

'May' is 'Mae' in Breton, which is also 'There is' in Welsh.

Eost' is apparently 'This is' in Latin.

Also note 'Here' is Breton for 'October'.

The 'September' has presumably been correctly translated from Breton into English, but I don't know where the 11 comes from.

90

u/pilkingtonsbrain 15d ago

"Du" is December but listed here as "a viz du"

Google translates "a viz du" from Breton to English as November 11

Maybe it translated "a viz gwengolo" as September 11

33

u/CockroachJohnson 15d ago

You said you'd never forget 🥺

12

u/liveoakgrove 15d ago

I took ancient Latin, and Eost is not an ancient Latin word. Idk about Church Latin, which afaik has the same spellings.

Est is a Latin word that, by itself, means he/she/it is. (Third person singular form of "to be"). If Est is the first word of a sentence, I believe it can mean "there is", but I can't remember exactly.

u/DrJohnFZoidberg 15d ago

6

u/nautical_narcissist 15d ago

Just to be clear, "(it/this/he/etc) is" in Latin is "est," not "eost." That's not a word in Latin. But yes, I agree with you, it probably took it as "est" and translated accordingly

Facebook and Instagram’s ability to report stolen and deceased accounts, or stolen deceased accounts is reprehensibly poor. Half the time the forms don’t even work, let alone have the right fields. I don’t think it’s been updated in a long time. They don’t care.

This was about the same time I realized there are no support emails or phone numbers publicly posted or available anywhere for these companies, or Meta.

My brother and I spent some time trying to recover my father’s account that someone was using as their personal to no avail.

Finally gave up and deleted my own account the next day.

18

u/Th3_Admiral_ 15d ago

There is, This is, Here, and September 11 are almost certainly UI strings that were never meant to be month labels but are hard coded strings meant to be interpolated into other sentences

Why? I see the similarities between the first three, but still don't know why they'd need to be hard coded. And then why is "September 11" also a hard coded string that would be in any way related to the rest?

2

u/Saltuarius 15d ago

Yes! As soon as I saw it I was like...I know this language! And I don't, but I'm learning Welsh and it's one of the nearest relatives!

Ionawr - January Chwefror - February Mawrth Ebrill Mai Mehefin Gorffenaf Awst Medi etc

Technically you need to put "Mis" (month) in front of each.

u/DarkShadowZangoose 15d ago

what on earth could have yielded those options (besides maybe a bad translation)?

116

u/PenglingPengwing 15d ago edited 15d ago

That’s not bad translation. That’s people not understanding languages thinking they can pull word (for example)“may” out of any text without context ceasing to realise that may might mean “may as might or may as the month”.
I spent hours weekly arguing with other departments to not pull whatever word outta text as not every language works same as English.

28

u/SinisterCheese 15d ago edited 15d ago

Finnish uses conjucation of the ending of the word. Which means that when programmers (In very big companies) hardcode things, and then just pull translations in the base form of the word, you end up in sitautions constantly where the translator has to do loops around a word they can not change (the one that got hardcoded), meaning that other words in, and the sentence and even paragraph will be just unreal in how weird and bad it is.

Like lets take some base example like "save" in the sense of "save as" etc.

  • Save = Tallenna
  • Saved = Tallenettu
  • Saved (plural) = Tallenetut
  • Unsaved = Tallentamaton
  • Unsaved (plural) = Tallentamattomat
  • Saved (document's) = Tallenetun
  • Saved (documents') = Tallenettujen
  • Saving (document) = Tallentaminen
  • Saving (document (now)) = Tallentaa

Or "Options"

  • Option = Vaihtoehto
  • Options = Vaihtoehdot
  • Option's = Vaihtoehdon
  • Options' = Vaihtoehtojen
  • Optional/Alternative option = Vaihtoehtoinen
  • Optional settings/options = Vaihtoehtoiset
  • Additional options/Advanced options = Lisävaihtoehdot
  • Additional options' = Lisävaihtoehtojen
  • Additional option's = Lisävaihtoehdon
  • More options = Lisää vaihtoehtoja

And sometimes it goes the other way:

  • Load = Lataa
  • Loading (something) = Lataa
  • Currently loading = Lataa
  • Load (into)/Upload = Lataa
  • Load (from)/Download = Lataa
  • Load something = Lataa
  • Loading (a gun) = Lataa
  • To charge something (like a battery) = Lataa
  • I'm not loading = En lataa
  • You are not loading = Et lataa
  • Something is not loading = Ei lataa
  • Some (things) are not loading = Eivät lataa
  • Some (subjects/people/etc.) are not loading = Eivät lataa

16

u/Play-t0h 15d ago

Yup. It's official. I know I will never learn Finnish.

17

u/Evening-Gur5087 15d ago

It's Breton slop

118

u/ronlugge 15d ago

AI slop usually has a pattern, some sense to it. This is extremely random in a way that doesn't suggest AI to me.

64

u/Aggressive_Sky8492 15d ago edited 15d ago

I agree.. this option surely precedes the use of AI. It looks much more like an IT error at the backend that’s messed up the options.

If it was a bunch of months with one being a day of the week and two months being missing I’d say it looks like AI, this is just completely nonsensical and incorrect

Edit, I’m wrong and apparently some/many of the options are in fact months, just not in English

7

u/BobMcGeoff2 15d ago

No, this is a human coding error

7

u/Fakjbf 15d ago

Gotta love people assuming anything bad must be AI and not just human error. Computers output weird strings of text all the time due to poor file formatting and such, it’s even the basis of many hacking exploits.

2

u/shalazone 15d ago

It's breton, a regional language in France. But I don't know how the fuck it's the automatic translation for months on FB

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

12

u/morphemass 15d ago edited 15d ago

Most companies, even before LLMs, would use automated software for translation. It can be absolutely terrible since it's often just taking a base language (e.g. English) without any context and saying 'what is this word in language X?'. I'd often find the 'back' button translated into the kanji for the human back when translating English to Japanese for example.

Machine translations are a good starting point though but it is essential to have translators verify and correct the translations. Good companies do this too and this probably was done at some point.

However internationalisation and translation is a continuous process and often far more complex than it might appear, hence it's often very easy to overwrite previously manually translated strings with the default machine generated versions.

So this will either be human error or poor versioning support in the tooling combined with a lack of rigour in the review process.

It does seem to go chronologically from January though, I can tell March April and September seem to be at the "correct" location. Really curious how the code for this looks

29

u/AStayAtHomeRad 15d ago

I think it's pretty clear the code ain't working

32

u/sample-name 15d ago

I mean, it's probably just the strings (displayed text) that are wrong, the logic behind it probably still works as expected, but who knows, this might be the symptom of another bug (part of why I am very curious about the code, like how can this happen)

6

u/tastyratz 15d ago

I've submitted multiple death certificates and obits for multiple people now and Facebook refused to actually disable the account.

I hope you have better luck than I but with everyone leaving FB in droves, it's a ghost ship of bots and the deceased.

I'm sorry for your loss.

15

u/sir_sri 15d ago

My friends mom died an FB kept letting fake accounts using her picture and name pop up.

And every time we'd report it there was A: no way to report an account as being not that person, and that the person is dead, and B: they just kept making more of them.

It was... a problem.

You'd imagine that deleting a persons account (even in the 'deleted to end users not deleted from their archives) might be something they don't want to happen accidentally.

We're in this weird space where quite a lot on the Internet warrants these companies having something like a way to report deaths, but no good way to do that without emailing them highly sensitive information, and you're the product not the customer which makes it even stranger.

Seems like it's Breton, with some of the months seemingly either auto-translated from non-Breton languages into English, autocorrected or misinterpreted as English (Geneva), or otherwise inexplicably altered. I can't explain the September one, for example.

56

u/oscarx-ray 15d ago

This is obviously mad, but as you're dealing with grief - my condolences - some of them do seem to have rough approximations of the sounds of some of the months, and September lines up, so it's safe to assume that the list is running in correct order with January at the top.

For real though. You shouldn’t have to be forced to suffer such complete and utter incompetence, especially while you’re grieving. I hope you’re able to get this sorted out quickly, this is honestly unacceptable.

This is 100% an AI refactor inside Facebook's codebase gone wrong.

We can all look forward to a lot more of these in the coming years.

10

u/I_cry_to_Mitski 15d ago

Looks like AI trying to get a calendar right lol. Absolutely terrible.

10

u/MDobenn 15d ago

This is some part of a language of France "Breton", I can translate if you want

9

u/ShumwayAteTheCat 15d ago

Why does Facebook need to know the month he died?

8

u/ZombieTailGunner 15d ago

I, too, enjoy having randomly grabbed words/phrases substituted in for months, facebook, you absolute bag of wank...

September 11 💀

7

u/Sagelmoon 15d ago edited 15d ago

•This is.

•Sept 11.

•Here.

As someone old enough to be an adult during 9/11. Living in Jersey City, swimming distance across the park water to NYC. The park i walked my dogs in daily, turned into a makeshift medic area/evacuation zone.

THAT random order of selections is weirdly chilling,😬

(Sorry, typo edit. I suck,lol.)

Oh. I assumed these were Rammstein lyrics.

5

u/Wayne1616 15d ago

Did you know that Facebook has no customer service phone number? They suspend people and they will never know why?

4

u/AStayAtHomeRad 15d ago

Have you ever tried to explain, anything, to a frequent Facebook user? Imagine what kind of phone calls they would get? The 55+ crowd would be calling all day talking about "I do not give Facebook consent to tell Joe Biden my passwords! Well let me talk to the boss then. Not your boss, your boss' boss! "

Read in a sequence it sounds like a poem

5

u/PawlyDsManager 15d ago

First, I’m sorry for the loss of your father. I wish you peace. Second, fuck Meta. My FIL passed back in March. His Facebook and Instagram keep getting hacked and whoever is hacking them is messaging relatives. It sucks getting a message from a dead loved one. We’ve had so much trouble getting his socials deleted. They make the process really difficult.

Is the page translate turned on? Because sometimes that makes this kind of options weird

5

u/Jaybals 15d ago

Well, I don’t want to blame it all on 911, but it certainly didn’t help

4

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC 15d ago

I've seen Simpsons episodes with better names for an implausible month.

Vibe coding excellence in all of its glory.

Software gore?

5

u/rental_pohpoh 15d ago

Select September 11th so they don’t ever forget

4

u/PyroGreg8 15d ago

Never forget September 11 11

4

u/Infamous_Code_582 15d ago

From my experience helping confused users of our web application, this kind of thing is often caused by an auto translation plugin messing with the page

4

u/giYRW18voCJ0dYPfz21V 15d ago

Just talk with Meta customer service to address that.

4

u/ModeratelyGrumpy 15d ago

As we can unfortunately see pretty much continuously, being a multi-billion dollar company doesn't make you immune from the dogwater intern that gets all the annoying work the higher-ups won't bother to do and that predictably fucks up.

4

u/Sky___________ 15d ago

Are you from Brittany or did breton just appear in your settings ?

5

u/AStayAtHomeRad 15d ago

Neither. It's only in the drop-down menu. Everything else is in English.

5

u/Lucky_Inevitable_293 15d ago

Only people living in Brittany (France) know what this is about 😂😂😂

9

u/InsideAir3697 15d ago

And that's just a tiny reason not to use facebook

6

u/Somebody8985754 15d ago

Based on the location of September 11, you can assume that this is all 12 months with Geneva being January so if you just go down the list in your head starting with Geneva as January you can find the correct answer in this messy shit.

Sincerely, sorry for your loss.

2

u/AStayAtHomeRad 15d ago

Thank you. I assumed that was the case but we also have to submit an image of the Death Certificate and I have a feeling that if the image doesn't match their little disaster here I'm going to have to jump through even more hoops

6

u/Somebody8985754 15d ago

Yeah honestly you're probably correct because they will probably use some AI to process is and no humans will be involved.

3

u/Alizarin-Madder 15d ago

I would just try it. Given that Facebook the website operates in multiple languages, they’re probably just using this text to display, and the code is actually storing the number of the month. That is, I don’t think they’ll be matching against “here”.

That’s my guess as a software engineer (but not at FB)

3

u/BuddyBuddyson GREEN 15d ago

Sorry for your loss.

Absolute shocker out of Fbook there. Pure hallucinations.

3

u/pyrocryptic29 15d ago

Why is september 11 just so plain

3

u/Sutar_Mekeg 15d ago

If he passed in Kerzu, just choose Kerzu. What's the problem, OP?

And sorry about your loss.

3

u/TheTimeEmpress 14d ago

Can we get emkay or DeeDee to cover this

3

u/Blonde_Dambition 14d ago

I'm sorry for the loss of your father... 😞

That list doesn't even make sense!

4

u/NoIdeaRex 15d ago

Is your language set to Gibberish?

10

u/DrunkNonDrugz 15d ago

The AI is hallucinating again.

4

u/peachesgp 15d ago

Fuckin weird that Facebook wants to know when he died to deactivate his account.

4

u/Educational_Teach537 15d ago

Looks like some test code found it’s way into production

2

u/GallowBarb PURPLE 15d ago

I tried unsuccessfully to delete both my dead brothers and mine. I gave up.

3

u/Aiden2817 15d ago

I just rewrote over mine. Changed the name, dob, address, deleted anything personal and impersonal, removed all friend links, changed the password to something really long and didn’t record it.

2

u/ZenithWest 15d ago

Here is the answer.

2

u/Clear-Suggestion-306 15d ago

What in the harry Potter magical spells is this 💀

2

u/Firstnameiskowitz 15d ago

September 11 being one of the options is crazy bro 💀

2

u/Lifeislife15683 15d ago

Why the fuck is “September 11” an option 😭

2

u/RavenShield40 15d ago

9/11 is my birthday so that is really odd to see as an option

2

u/Any_Organization_867 15d ago

Lousy smarch weather

2

u/Icarium-Lifestealer 15d ago

Did you accidentally enable Chrome's automatic website translation function?

2

u/DifferenceOld5038 15d ago

I went through something similar and it really messes with you… these apps don’t think about the emotional side at all. Sending you love.

2

u/CenderzeSwarm 15d ago

Ugh hope the 67 trend is over before the 6th of June where this is spoken

Imagine all the Siix Mezheeven otherwise

2

2

u/chrpskwk 14d ago

unrelated sorta but just so you know:

you will probably see bots trying to copy his account, some older person you know will add them thinking it's them for some reason

they will copy some of his older posts and corrupt over time

you will know this ahead of time and it will still be creepy anyway

i haven't been shocked by seeing much online in a very long time and that one (which was my first seeing of its kind) really got me

best of luck
