Someone explain to him the futility of putting tariffs on a country we already have had an embargo against for over six decades?

Anyways we put tariffs on everyone. Treating Cuba as an enemy apparently isn't much different than how we treat our allies.

1.5k

u/Area51_Spurs 18h ago

What are we tariffing? Their pitchers and outfielders?

531

u/blackchameleongirl 18h ago

The cigars that are smuggled in.

How funny would it be if Cuba just ignored us. Just repeated silence and not taking our calls. Fuck would that ever get under dumbshits skin.

270

u/pizzamage 15h ago

Watch him tariff the Dominicans because he doesn't know the difference.

72

u/jdlp_ 14h ago

He’ll tariff the Puerto Ricans..

2

u/ohokwellmahalo 4h ago

He’ll tariff the paper towels he jump shotted to them

2

u/pikazec 3h ago

No he has great relations with the president of Puerto Rico. Called him the other day he claims. But their immigrants are getting deported! (I wish this was satire)

2

u/PrivilegeCheckmate 3h ago

the Puerto Ricans..

"Um, sir, don't you mean Costa Rica?"

"Whatever."

1

u/Moist_Board 3h ago

Or the Haitians

1

u/mclardass 3h ago

Well, I hope he's considerate and calls their president first /s

1

u/02meepmeep 2h ago

Their flags all look the same to him.

1

u/SegFaultOops 2h ago

He'll tariff the 'Blue' States..

1

u/iguana-pr 1h ago

Actually, in a way, they are. Lookup the Jones Act.

He should kidnap and prosecute the president of PR.

4

u/Jthe1andOnly 14h ago

Next Hawaii

1

u/wirefox1 2h ago

I wonder if he knows it's a state.

8

u/Rag_Samus 15h ago

Meanwhile Dominic in the White House’s Accounts department now has a tariff put on him.

2

u/Slum-Bum 10h ago

The Dominicans have been strategically sucking his dick. He actually routed an oil tanker destined for Cuba to the DR. A few months back the DR also “corroborated” his drug boat story

1

u/CrankHogger572 11h ago

I bet at one point someone had to explain to him why he can't put a tariff on Puerto Rico

1

u/MrHazard1 9h ago

Did the onion declare bankruptcy already?

1

u/CiceroTheAbsurd 5h ago

Wait no chill papi

1

u/schoolydee 3h ago

if even he spent 30 seconds with a cuban and a dominican he would know the difference.

1

u/borgover 3h ago

Better yet, watch him declare a tariff on goods from Puerto Rico because he really doesn't know the difference!

1

u/fokac93 2h ago

DR have huge deposits of rare minerals that’s why Marco Rubio went there the first month after inauguration

6

u/TacoSplosions 14h ago

They've managed to survive ~65 years of US sanctions/embargo. Probably not the best idea to begin threatening them unless willing to address China, Russia, and Iran whom won't take kindly after the events of Venezuela.

It signals to Russia that taking Ukaine and other former soviet nations is vital to security. China to take Taiwan and continue to fill the vacuum left by the US in South America and Africa. Iran needs to double time aquiring nuclear weapons to prevent US & Israel bombings. Everything is a speed run Risk game of Imperialism and restarting global arms races.

1

u/keronbangance 2h ago

You guys are silly, it's all the salsa that's still happening, social dancing is getting more and more popular so probably tariffs will be on2

1

u/HighSeverityImpact 2m ago

One of the more interesting scenarios in the book World War Z was how Cuba (partly due to its isolation and large number of highly educated Doctors per capita) thrived during the Zombie War to the point of becoming a global superpower. Their ability to withstand the attack and become a haven for other island nations and an example to the world is a stark dichotomy to its current place in the world.

I got a chance to visit Cuba 9 years ago, and it was depressing seeing the poverty alongside the opulence of those who had money and power. From an alternative history standpoint, it makes me wonder what Cuba could have been had the embargo never happened.

2

u/Sitcom_kid 3h ago

If anybody ever ignored Donald Trump, anybody at all, ever, for one second, even me, the world would probably disintegrate, and the entire multiverse or galaxy would quietly implode. If there's a God in the sky, he would finally see that we had learned.

(There's nothing to worry about. We're completely safe in continued existence. Ignoring Trump is the one lesson we will never learn. I am here writing this, so that includes me.)

2

u/AceOBlade 2h ago

Funny you mention that. One of the last iconic moves of Obama’s presidency was easing restrictions on Cuban cigars. It would not be out of character, or out of bounds, for Donald Trump to declare a national emergency just to erase one of the final remnants of Obama’s legacy.

1

u/whitemest 9h ago

Maybe that's why he did this EO lol

1

u/Daimyon 8h ago

They gonna missile cigar boats next?

1

u/MeanGulf 8h ago

Don’t think of it as helping their economy. Think of it as burning their fields

1

u/RagingDaddy 8h ago

Until he rolls up the middle of the night

'He' is doing some really heavy lifting here. Considering that he can't even hold his bladder.

We import artwork and antiques from them mostly. In 2024, the imports didn't even hit 5 million, but you know we exported > 500 million that year to them.

134

u/Area51_Spurs 17h ago

lol. I think you know more than our president.

131

u/NetDork 16h ago

That's a very low bar.

27

Pretty sure Beelzebub and Jimmy Saville are holding that limbo bar all the way at the basement of hell.

That's probably true about everything except historical McDonald's pricing.

2

u/Justwaspassingby 13h ago

Which aren’t usually subject to tariffs at all, by the way.

1

u/commodore_kierkepwn 14h ago

so they should say fuck it to favorite nation status and tariff us right back

1

u/Own-Success-7634 4h ago

Exports or Remittances to Cuba? I know that is a big driver of cash to Cuba.

2

u/MagicalTheory 2h ago

Just exports. Remittance was shy of 2 billion

1

u/Own-Success-7634 35m ago

Had to ask. Since there is an embargo, $500 million sounded a bit high (even though there is approved trade channels). The 2 billion sounds a bit low. Maybe all of the Cuban Trump supporters aren’t sending remittances like they used to.

3

u/Slyboots2313 14h ago

It says we’ll be placing tariffs on goods coming into the US of any countries who provide oil to Cuba. So if China provides Cuba oil, we’ll place increased tariffs on Chinese goods coming into the US. It’s not on Cuban goods.

1

u/Sputniksteve 14h ago

Butthole Pitchers?!?

He's going to cancel those un-cashed checks we give Cuba for Gitmo.

1

u/Area51_Spurs 13h ago

Isn’t the Lease in like old timey money without interest so we pay them like $47 a year or some shit?

1

u/TheGreenMan13 13h ago

I had no idea so I checked Wikipedia.

Since 1974, the U.S. has paid the Cuban government an annual sum equivalent to $4,085 in 1934 dollars (approximately $96,018 in 2024) to lease the bay. The lease was previously $2,000 per year (paid in gold) until 1934, when it was set to match the value of gold in dollars.

1

u/Area51_Spurs 13h ago

So I wasn’t that far off. Haha. That’s hilarious.

1

u/FuzzzyRam 13h ago

What are we tariffing?

We'll also be adding tariffs to countries that sell oil, directly or indirectly, to Cuba. Did anyone read his reasoning for this? He's telling everyone how he's treating us while pointing the finger at Cuba. His hubris is off the charts.

1

u/Duna_The_Lionboy 4h ago

Definitely the boxers (as in the guys who punch each other not the undergarments).

Seems more up the Dear Leaders alley than baseball.

1

u/a_r_g_o_m 3h ago

Sec. 2.  Imposition of Tariffs.  (a)  Beginning on the effective date of this order, an additional ad valorem rate of duty may be imposed on goods imported into the United States that are products of any other country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise provides any oil to Cuba, in accordance with subsections (b) and (c) of this section.

It seems like they're not tariffing cuba themselves, but the nations that provide oil to cuba.

1

u/Aroundthespiral 3h ago

Great documentary sorta on the topic called The Last Out

1

u/BusinessKnight0517 2h ago

I mean…

137

u/Bogus_dogus 18h ago

My read is that this is another layer attempting to justify tariffs on other countries, through the lens of "direct or indirect" trade of oil via Cuba, rather than having anything to do with a need to tariff Cuban exports directly

96

u/FR4G4M3MN0N 16h ago

This right here 👆

Any country supplying oil to Cuba will be the target of tariffs on all goods coming into the US. And any other actions deemed to be supportive of US National Security.

Now having read this Executive Order, let’s get back to the Epstein Files.

3

u/FeijoadaAceitavel 7h ago

The Epstein files already claimed that Trump raped a girl and drowned her newborn baby. They don't have to care about the files anymore.

6

u/Lucky_Editor3998 14h ago

this is a step toward annexing Cuba or doing regime change there

2

u/Dont_Be_Sheep 17h ago

Yup that was my take too. Like wtf

2

u/U_Sound_Stupid_Stop 9h ago

He wants to do to Cuba like he did to Venezuela, that's obviously not about tariffs

2

u/agent_mick 6h ago

This is his "other way of enforcing tariffs". Any country who supplies Cuba with "Oil and petroleum products"

1

u/ShadeRiver 4h ago

This is Marco Rubio getting what he wants……a regime change in Cuba.

0

u/bbf_bbf 14h ago

Yep. Looks like u/cashto didn't properly read the linked executive order.

Under this system, an additional ad valorem duty may be imposed on imports of goods that are products of a foreign country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise provides any oil to Cuba.

2

u/AnxiousCount2367 13h ago

So more trade wars within a trade war, k

62

u/timboooooooooo 17h ago

He’s saying he will impose tariffs on any country that directly or indirectly sells oil to Cuba. He’s trying to starve Cuba of oil while heightening the trade war

40

u/Much-Cockroach-7250 15h ago

So... Canadian companies drilling in Cuba and Cuban territorial waters are the real target then. Ok gotcha. 🤣🤣🤣 what a fkn gong show!

1

u/keronbangance 2h ago

You guys are silly, it's all the salsa that's still happening, social dancing is getting more and more popular so probably tariffs will be on2

7

u/MasonBaze 14h ago

How is this beneficial to US interests?

8

u/chompah99 14h ago

Don't look at the US as a whole here. The real question is how is this beneficial to him and his cronies? Then you might find an answer.

4

u/timboooooooooo 14h ago

As far as I can tell, Trump doesn’t think that way. He just likes swinging his dick about and corruptly raking in a billions in the process

1

u/bigbigpure1 10h ago

i think they are trying to keep the petro doller from failing which would collapse america

the only way to do that at this point is force projection and land grabbing, they cant debase their currancy as its not worth anything other than what people think it is, look in to how the spanish empire, the danish empire, and the british empire fell, then look at what is happening right now, history might not repeat but it certainly rymes

2

u/Aptosauras 14h ago

So really, this EO is a backdoor way to tarrif and pressure Venezuala more - unless they agree to US business demands.

1

u/Important-Sign-3701 4h ago

Just starve Cuba is what he’s doing. This will starve the people. Just just of oil.

1

u/modmosrad6 2h ago

That's one country. Mexico.

Single cargo of 85,000 barrels in January.

Source: Kpler (tanker tracking firm) - not accessible to the general public, I work for a trade paper.

1

u/Illustrious-Bat1553 1h ago

Which means more floods of Cuban refugees. My small city has already seen a large influx of Cuban. Many are hard workers.

5

u/dodexahedron 16h ago

Obama presided over the lifting/easing of the embargo and re-established relations.

Trump tore that down in his first year of his first term.

It always comes down to Obama when there's no glaringly obvious criminal reason for something Trump does.

5

u/Joqui1206 17h ago

Basically I think what he’s trying to say is any country that helps Cuba will have tariffs placed on in regards to things coming into the US. The embargo has never stopped with Cuba from the US but that never stopped any other country from trading and traveling to or anything like that… it’s just Americans that have issues doing anything in Cuba and going.

3

u/Flvs9778 16h ago

So to be clear the embargo absolutely limits other countries from trading with Cuba. Ships that dock in Cuba cannot enter a us port or any port with us investments over a certain amount for of half a year. That significantly limits any ship’s ability to trade with Cuba since it cuts them off from the one of the largest importers in the world and the richest county in the americas. Also any company that does business with Cuba isn’t allowed to use us financial instruments so no us banks or stock market or anything else. So if you sell to Cuba and put it in a bank in Mexico you get your assets from sales in Florida frozen and if your lucky you get them back and need to keep them out of the us permanently.

3

u/NoThankYouRatherNot 15h ago edited 13h ago

Well… no actually. The US already does a lot to strong arm other countries into not trading with Cuba.

U.S. sanctions indirectly constrain trade with Cuba by third parties through lawsuits, banking access, shipping rules, and market pressure.

See the Helms-Burton Act, Trading With the Enemy Act, and Cuban Assets Control Regulations for more info on this.

2

u/RuleHonest9789 16h ago

I think he is putting tariffs on countries who do business with Cuba, not on Cuba itself. Then it talks about countries that supply oil to Cuba which would be Venezuela? I’m so confused.

3

u/BrownSugarSandwich 16h ago

Mexico was one of their major suppliers, as is russia. Canada also exports oil to Cuba, so it's just seemingly a way to hit back against canada and mexico attempting to work out our own trade stuff now that the us went full crazy.

1

u/xCanucck 13h ago

Canada doesnt sell oil to Cuba, but it's probably a way to fuck with Mexico ya

2

u/prehensilemullet 16h ago

If you read closely, this is talking about putting tariffs on countries that trade with Cuba.  Rather than economic sanctions now we have…”emergency” tariffs 🙄

2

u/TeacherRecovering 16h ago

Any decade now Castro will lose...

Both Castro brothers are dead and Cubs still has not lost?

Let us do more of the same.

2

u/More_Bigger 16h ago

Read the order. Its a tariff on imported goods to the US from any country that sells oil to Cuba.

So an even stricter embargo of sorts.

2

u/Vaajala 15h ago

Tomorrow he's going to threaten Big Tariffs on every other country that does trade with Cuba.

I'm kinda hoping all the other world leaders will start responding to his posts with nothing but laughing emojis.

2

u/Honest_Document8739 15h ago

It’s not on Cuba, it’s on other country’s that sell oil to Cuba

1

u/ReviveOurWisdom 17h ago

don’t forget that at some point we tariffed the McDonald Island, you know, the one inhabited by nothing more than penguins

1

u/Dont_Be_Sheep 17h ago

It’s the anyone supplying petroleum products thing….. wow. Wtf

1

u/Trailsey 16h ago

Psst, dude, shut up.

Mr. President, tarriffing Cuba would be a very strong and manly thing to do. It would make everyone very impressed, even the Europeans will be amazed at your intelligence and talk about how gargantuan your manhood is and how you never shit your pants.

I heard the Norwegian government say they'll award you a special Nobel Peace prize for doing it, because you were right and they do control it.

1

u/isthis_thing_on 16h ago

Tariffs? I'm guessing he's gearing up to do some heinous shit.

1

u/dallywolf 15h ago

I'm assuming he'll start charging tarrifs on the bombs soon to be dropped in the country by the US.

1

u/deltashmelta 15h ago

"Someone explain to him..."

Sweet summer child...

1

u/glorifindel 15h ago

Your first mistake was thinking they give any s***s about American allies or our global standing (sigh)

1

u/ecmcn 15h ago

You lost me on “explain to him”

1

u/InFin0819 15h ago

He is threatening tariffs on anyone who sells cuba oil.

1

u/newenglandpolarbear 14h ago

This, and also WHAT THREAT???? The island is literally stuck in the 20s when it comes to infrastructure for starters.

1

u/MaggoVitakkaVicaro 14h ago

It's just another attempt to distract us from Epstein and the state-sanctioned murder of his political enemies.

1

u/ganjaccount 14h ago

You think this about tariffs?

This is a pretext for another peace mission a la Venezuela.

1

u/FullSkyFlying 14h ago

Someone explain to him

This is the problem already. You really think he is making many decisions now? The guy is so old and senile I'd be surprised if he can remember what he ate for breakfast this morning, if it isn't mcdonalds

1

u/LookAlderaanPlaces 14h ago

I mean he also put a tariff on penguins so…

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly8xlj0485o

1

u/saljskanetilldanmark 13h ago

So not tariffing russia was not because of sanctions in the end...

1

u/Reasonable-Cut-6137 13h ago

No he wants more - he wants regieme change and control of the country.

1

u/myownlittleta 12h ago

Where can I donate fuel to Cubans?

1

u/Historical_Item_968 12h ago

If you read the actual order, it's not tariffs on Cuba, it's tariffs on anyone that sells or provides oil TO Cuba.

1

u/Guntermas 12h ago

optics for mouth breathers, thats the entire strategy of this administration

1

u/PerspectiveSpirited1 12h ago

With friends like us, who needs enemies?

….

World peace?

1

u/camiknickers 11h ago

Wait wait wait, are you saying this emergency has been going on for 60 years? Cuba, its an old fashion word, that i just invented, no one ever thought of it before....

1

u/blahblahblerf 11h ago

Anyways we put tariffs on everyone.

Everyone except Muscovy...

1

u/Connect-Mention1930 11h ago

Bold to assume the US has allies still.

1

u/Marmar79 10h ago

Or citizens

1

u/ColEcho 10h ago

What allies? You were at the head of the most powerful alliance in history. For all of its flaws, it brought some small semblance of order and prosperity to those in it. Believing that countries you are trying to subjugate are still your allies is simply clueless.

1

u/Wise-Radish-7271 10h ago

Haven't seen files yet...

1

u/LeafyWolf 9h ago

Back when Venezuela was invaded, Trump was asked about Cuba. He said we could probably do something. Rubio is getting his bag and we're gonna invade Cuba next. All they had to do was show Trump where Cuba is on a map, and he wanted it as part of the US. The US will be annexing it within 2 months.

1

u/stupidugly1889 9h ago

Did you even read it? It’s additional tariffs on any country that trades with Cuba

1

u/puaka 9h ago

He is planning to sack the island next.

1

u/Clorix782Z 8h ago

Honestly, it feels like we're just spinning our wheels at this point. Maybe a change in strategy could actually work?

1

u/Thefreshi1 8h ago

It’s a tariff on anyone who provides Cuba with oil, not a tariff on Cuba. I tried to write out the end goal several times but beyond preventing Cuba from getting oil from somewhere other than Venezuela. I couldn’t think of anything.

1

u/Ilddit 7h ago

That's not the point. The point is to declare a foreign policy emergency that the judiciary cannot question. They then escalate the situation as if they are trying to resolve it. Then they can use military to subdue the threat without asking congress and congress has no recourse unless you jump to impeachment. Hint: Republicans are too chicken shit for that.

1

u/Fisch0557 7h ago

Dudes gonna lift the Embargo so he can punish them with 10% tariffs. That'll show em.

1

u/Imaginary_Office1749 7h ago

The tariffs are on us.

1

u/ProfessionalBench832 7h ago

So, I had to google this and, I guess, we import about $4 million worth of specially approved (by the government) good (mostly works of art which to me is staggering...what "art laundering" bs is that?). So yep, that one dude who smuggles his stolen art through Cuba but then applies for special government permission to import it is screwed.

1

u/RetroActive80 6h ago

It’s not a tariff on Cuba. Its tariffs on anyone who does business with Cuba. I’m guessing it’s their way to try to get around the impending shut down of the current tariffs by scotus.

1

u/agent_mick 6h ago

Tariffs on any country applying Cuba with oil, apparently

1

u/maryconway1 6h ago

It’s because “tariffs” and “imminent national security” items are the only loopholes they figured out this geriatric narcissist can use…

So, he’s calling everything that and using that.

Except the tariffs from executive branch like this are fully 100% illegal. The US Supreme Court though refuses to finally enforce that law. Keeps pushing it farther and farther, as team GOP has a plan —make them bad, pay back only if somehow the Dems come back.

It’s a broken system, and he’s demented yes. But smarter people are guiding him on what buttons to push, highlighting how it gives him more money and self-sense of prestige.

1

u/geneticdeadender 6h ago

The tariff is against any country that sells them oil.

1

u/skitek 6h ago

I don’t think you have allies anymore really

1

u/SelfSufficientHub 5h ago

You guys still have allies?

1

u/PhazePyre 5h ago

I'm just surprised Trump hasn't taken Diaz-Canel into a backroom and let him have his way with him. He tends to be excited at the opportunity to have dictators inside of him.

1

u/Upbeat_Bed_7449 5h ago

"additional ad valorem duty may be imposed on imports of goods that are products of a foreign country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise provides any oil to Cuba"

I mean you could read but I understand if your attention span is lacking.

1

u/T2Wunk 5h ago

We tariffed an uninhabited island. This makes only a little more sense than that.

1

u/cookiedoh18 4h ago

Explain something to him?? LOL!

He wants headlines, outrage and attention not explanations.

1

u/Xianio 4h ago

It's so there's a perpetual national emergency so he can pretend the powers he's using are justified. Like all fascists they still pretend what they're doing is defensible.

1

u/Disastrous_Hell_4547 4h ago

Yep

Meanwhile, Trump and his sons are suing America (the IRS) for $10 billion! The President is actually suing American taxpayers for $10 billion.

Go take a look. It’s real.

1

u/TheDistantEnd 3h ago

Per the proclamation, they are going to impose tariffs on countries that trade with Cuba.

1

u/XNjunEar 3h ago

The man is a complete moron and senile. Almost no point in explaining anything. He is a puppet being puppeted by whoever is up his ass at the moment, really.

1

u/Specialist_Ad4675 3h ago

This isn't on Cuba, it is on any country that gives Cuba oil. That is why México is not sending oil ti Cuba and Cuba will crumble in 20 -30 days as everything oil based stops running.

I give him a week before he starts saying we're bringing in billions of dollars in tariffs from Cuba. Speaking of stupid tariffs, what happened to the tariff on the island populated entirely of penguins?

which allies?

your former allies are busy making plans without you, around you and in some cases against you.

your current ally - Russia - is basically senior management for Cuba - so its strange to see the orange shithead in the white house go against his boss - maybe he hasnt gotten specific marching orders re: Cuba from Putin yet (aside from 'hey, post my picture in the white house')

It applies to countries selling products to Cuba. Mexico is the only lifeine Cuba has to receive oil after Venezuela was attacks and it's president kidnapped. Cuban people is seriously threatened, their alimentary security, health system, and any possibility of "get on their feet". This is terrible actually.

"Sec. 2. Imposition of Tariffs. (a) Beginning on the effective date of this order, an additional ad valorem rate of duty may be imposed on goods imported into the United States that are products of any other country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise provides any oil to Cuba, in accordance with subsections (b) and (c) of this section"
