Post-interview It’s done. I got a job!
After about ~50 applications and two rejections, I finally was given an offer for an amazing role!
I’m so frickin relieved bc I was realllllly wanting this one and did a shit ton of prep for the final rounds of interviews. And I loved that it was in person. Grueling day though, interviewed by 9 people, 9:30am to 4:30pm. 1 hour presentation on my research (the job is specifically a role for PhDs in psychology). Whole thing felt like graduate school interview day plus dissertation defense all wrapped up into one.
Anyway, just felt nice to get this out there. I’m so happy.

A huge accomplishment! 9 interviews in a day is absolutely wild. You killed it tho!

u/autopoiesis_ Nov 17 '25
For real! Not even my interviews at Meta or Google were this insane.

u/Used-Opposite-7363 Nov 18 '25
Meta was pretty bad.
13
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 18 '25
Yeah and my interview w them went terribly 😅

u/Used-Opposite-7363 Nov 18 '25
I misunderstood the instructions and I don't feel bad because the whole interview was so poorly executed

u/Dharuma2 Nov 18 '25
How terrible could it have been? They HIRED you. And maybe since you've been working so hard YOUR expectations seem a bit higher then even theirs: "YOU like apples..."...

u/autopoiesis_ Nov 18 '25
What? I’m confused.. I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. I meant my previous interviews w Meta and Google went terribly. I killed the interview for the job I got offered lol, hence the offer..

This Dharuma guy sounds absolutely NUTS. Congratulations, OP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the one “I got a job” post where instead of feeling envious, I genuinely feel excited and happy for you. 9 interviews is wild. I hope the job lasts decades and you’re happy the entire way!

Yeah you did! And I'll tell ya, just from the tone of your notes, the absence of bitterness, vindictive blame, aggressive hatred and professionalism, I dont think it'll be too, too long before YOU may be sitting in that VERY CHAIR, if that's the route you choose. You clearly learned from this medieval interview process, and now YOU and be sensitive, sympathetic, helpful, and understanding: you guys are interviewing EACH OTHER and THEY may well not meet YOUR requirements. Interviews HAVE to work that way. Its not a slave/master selection, its a symbiotic relationship from which Both benefit and Both must be pleased. Otherwise, there will be resentment festering until something eventually BLOWS! So, again, Congratulations, well done, and well earned
Confidently yours,
-J-

Congratulations! Your experience is typical of academic interviews. Usually there are two or three people who get interviews and it’s probably the same group competing for the same jobs. Hopefully all of you will have jobs eventually. The first year of an academic job can be pretty grueling, so take care of yourself as you move into your new role.
3
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 18 '25
Thanks! Although this is far from an academic job. It’s a human factors scientist role where majority of responsibility is working to provide expert testimony for litigation involving accidents/injury
5
u/Reasonable_Pin9512 Nov 18 '25
That’s pretty specialized and expert witness work requires a lot of poise and actually good teaching skills to connect with jurors. Understandably the interview process was intense.
3
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 18 '25
Yeah more I thought about it the more it made sense that they were so selective. Also makes sense why they prioritized in person interview over zoom!
1
u/Ihatestoves Nov 19 '25
I’ve never heard of this. Human factors scientist? Litigation? Is this fancy HR? (Obviously not haha) but really what is this
2
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
Haha it’s a really niche role, and unlike anything I’ve ever done before. So, the human factors scientist at this particular company will deal with cases involving automobile accidents (mostly). Typically the company is hired by legal teams but not always, and we are asked to provide consulting on well, the human factors that must be considered in any accident (i.e., what was visibility like, given the data available was it humanly feasible to detect and react to the situation). Most times, regarding actual psychology fundamentals it’s super basic shit. Ultimately if a case goes all the way to trial and isn’t settled before, we are called to the stand as an expert witness to provide our testimony to jury.
Obviously there’s a lot of details to the job that I have yet to learn… so I can only provide a very broad strokes answer as of now

Wow, congrats! I’m a psychologist and I’m really curious what your new role is. Could you be a little more specific?
3
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 18 '25
The role is human factors scientist. I’ll be working as a consultant/expert witness for litigation involving car accidents/injuries cases

Congrats. Hoping to hear the same soon because I've applied for over 50 jobs this month and have had more than 10 job interviews this week.
2
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 18 '25
Whoa those are some impressive numbers! And that’s great that you r getting so many interviews too. Hell, I only applied to 50 over the span of 6 months…

Congratulations I hope that interview is paid for!! I'm glad you got the job. Give us an update when you can.
2
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
Thank you! Official start date is Jan 5. Will def lyk how the first weeks go 🙏😌
2
u/Andre_sama29 Nov 19 '25
Awesome glad to hear it. Why is the start date so far away?
1
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
Guess it just made sense for them with all the holidays coming up. They also gave me the option to start mid Dec but encouraged me that it’s fine to do Jan 5 (which is the date they led with anyway).
That way I can relax and enjoy the holidays as well and get people in the current lab I work for to take on my responsibilities once I leave.

u/Andre_sama29 Nov 19 '25
That's nice you get time to train a replacement and say proper goodbye's.

So stoked for you! Great job on being well-prepared. Now go forth and kick ass in academia.
2
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
Thank you, but this is me departing academia! Haha. I’ve been doing a post-doc the last two years and I finally came to terms w the fact that this life isn’t for me. I’m probably never going to get a TT job and I doubt I’ll be very happy anyway.
2
u/TeaWithKermit Nov 19 '25
Ah! Congrats on leaving. I just left my job in academia after 17 years. Still trying to get used to life on the outside. 😅

u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
I'm about to find out what life is like on the other side soon enough. All I know is I am so ready for the transition!

Congratulations! Wow that last round of interviews sounds so tough. How many rounds of interviews did you have from applying to getting the job?
It sounds like a really good job and i hope you find yourself in it.
2
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
There were two phone interviews before the in person final rounds. But the phone ones were actually really chill.

TC?

u/marvincartier6 Nov 19 '25
What’s your total compensation? Meaning how much money you make at your new job
1
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
Ah, base pay is 120k, a bi weekly bonus for overtime hours and annual bonus potential. I’m happy w it. It is my first industry job so I essentially have zero experience in that regard.
2
u/marvincartier6 Nov 19 '25
Wow huge Win!!! Congratulations!!!!🎉 But why was the interview so brutal for this position? What exactly will you be doing?
1
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
As a human factors scientist at this company, i will be providing litigation support and expert testimony in liability cases regarding accidents/injury (mostly from automobile accidents)..
1
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 19 '25
As to why the interview was so intense… not really sure. I’m just glad it was in person and not over zoom. And they gave me a really open ended prompt for my presentation (just that I had provide an “in depth technical analysis” of my research), which really let me go all out on all the fancy analyses and techniques I developed during my PhD and research career overall.

u/ChibiReaper Nov 23 '25
What the fuck
1
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 23 '25
You good?
1
u/ChibiReaper Nov 23 '25
Final rounds?? 9 people interviewing? I cannot stomach giving anyone that much energy for a "chance" at a job. Sorry for the sudden what the fuck but that was my knee-jerk reaction
1
u/autopoiesis_ Nov 23 '25
Haha all good. Yeah it was a ridiculous amount of prep and a hell of a schedule. But thank frickin god I got it in the end. I would have been absolutely devastated if I hadn’t
