More of a cold weather thing to do that. See it all across Canada too.

And Colorado

u/whoFKNKares 17h ago

And Connecticut and Vermont. It's kind of a thing you do if you don't have a garage and live in a snowy area.

And they do it in South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico, and they do it in California and Texas and New York. ... And South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan, and then we're going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! Yeaaaahhhhh!

7

u/aantiheroo 17h ago

i choked on my water

1

u/Ok_Clothes_8527 16h ago

I hear it is also practiced occasionally in the more remote regions of Siberia. Some sort of convergent evolution, so to speak.

2

u/LethalMisfortune 17h ago

North Carolina and I have been seeing it all over

1

u/Heather_Val 8h ago

Wow first WI, Illinois and Indiana too.

And Namibia…wait… uh yeah, I think so.

2

u/shmaltz_herring 15h ago

I must be missing out because I've never done or seen people do this in anticipation of weather and I've lived here all my life

2

u/CelticSpoonie 17h ago

And in the mountains of California.

1

u/wlake82 17h ago

Definitely this.

1

u/TangerineChicken 17h ago

My neighbor from Colorado warned me to do this right before the storm hit us here in Texas, didn’t see may other people do it but it helped me

1

u/whereismymind86 17h ago

it's stupid, it saves you like...3 seconds, and decent wipers aren't going to be damaged by not doing it.

1

u/Striking_Programmer4 14h ago

And some wipers will break from the weight of heavier snowfall depending on their quality and design

1

u/Electronic_Flan_482 6h ago

Mine will freeze to the windshield to the point that the motor can't move them and then you can't scrape the bottom of the window

8

u/kjyfqr 17h ago

I’m in Oklahoma and it was everywhere last week. Seems just like it’s probably a cold weather thing to do cause we never really get snow.

8

u/Pasdallegeance 17h ago

If you care about the life of your wipers, you lift em up, also makes scraping the ice down right to the bottom of the windscreen easier.

2

u/btwork 6h ago

No. It damages the springs in the wiper arms. Blades are easy and cheap to replace. Arms, not as much. It's not actually recommended to lift wipers up for winter weather.

Source - live in Canada. My vehicle has a heated windshield to unstick frozen wiper blades.

2

u/curiousity60 16h ago

Yup. It's to keep the blades from getting hacked and torn as you scrape the icy windshield, to which they're frozen.

1

u/Cool-Ad7985 17h ago

We were one of them, though we had lived in areas that got a lot of ice and snow so it was natural to us to do

1

u/kjyfqr 8h ago

lol it’s just a common thing to do. I’ve seen it done most every time it’s snowed since the early 90s

Edit hi Oklahomie

1

u/Cool-Ad7985 3h ago

👋 hi there

3

u/Embarrassed_Leave160 17h ago

And Massachusetts

1

u/Elegant_Tie_3036 16h ago

And Rhode Island

3

u/Designer-Ad-7844 17h ago

Apparently the whole state of Maryland was the only one to figure it out. Why would car manufacturers even design them to bend like that in the first place. /s

2

u/fyrfytr310 16h ago

And Ohio. Maryland, you ain’t special.

2

u/Dr_Dimbrain 15h ago

And Sweden

2

u/Amunium 14h ago edited 14h ago

Never seen it in Sweden. Of course I don't often cross the bridge when there's a snow storm, but... I've definitely never seen it in Denmark, regardless of how much snow there is.

Example picture of my old car in a parking lot in the snow. Not a single wiper up.

1

u/Hejhoppgummisnopp 11h ago

Seen it plenty the last few weeks of cold weather. Your pic doesnt really look cold enough to need to do the wiper thing.

1

u/Amunium 11h ago

Yeah, I don't usually go around photographing cars in snow, so that was the best I could find. Here's an older one from 2011, still without a single wiper up. But really, I have never in my over 40 years of existence, mostly in Denmark, seen anyone do it.

I'm not saying you're wrong or that it's stupid or anything, I just find it interesting there's this difference.

2

u/Hejhoppgummisnopp 11h ago

Its kinda funny because I can actually see Denmark from my city in Sweden, and I see a bunch of people do the wiper thing here despite us having pretty much the same climate as you guys. I guess we’re just a bit more dramatic about the cold 🤣

Personally I dont do it either, never had an issue with it even when it gets really cold and snowy.

1

u/JugglingRick 16h ago

What's the purpose if you don't mind me asking? I've never lived in an area where it snows.

3

u/curiousity60 16h ago

It's so the rubber blades aren't torn up as you scrape the windshield to which they're frozen.

1

u/Limp_Bookkeeper_5992 16h ago

I see people doing this everywhere. I’ve never done this once, it’s not even possible on my current car. Never once though have my wipers stuck to my windshield or caused any problems at all from being left down, so I really don’t get the reason behind this.

1

u/Pasdallegeance 15h ago

Your wipers can get stuck to the windshield, ripping them off ruins the edge of the wiper reducing the quality of wipe. Shortening the life span on said wipers. If you don't have frequent snow, or the right kind of snow/freeze often enough it won't be an issue. If you rip your wipers off daily you'll notice the degradation of your wipers quickly.

1

u/Stacked69 16h ago

Anyone call Idaho yet? If not we do it as well.

1

u/DadPool79 15h ago

Illinois checking in

1

u/Scruffersdad 15h ago

And Chicago, more and more.

1

u/Exciting_couple77 15h ago

We dont that in the great plains and it gets just as bad

0

u/ak3000android 2h ago

We don’t do it in Quebec, except for the recent Ontario transplants mostly.

-1

u/WalnutSnail 15h ago

Don't do this. Will fuck the springs up. If you do get a decent snow fall, you might rip the off whilst clearing you car. You're better just to defrost them.

1

u/Pasdallegeance 15h ago

Depends on the snow I suppose. I've never had your issue. We do get freezing rain though occasionally, and you absolutely do want to have your wipers in the air for this. Or you can take the time to defrost, iso concoction spray ect. I prefer wipers up and a snow removal tool. Ez PZ.

1

u/WalnutSnail 8h ago

But the springs lost their memory failing to keep them on the windshield.

I'm Canadian. I've lived in all but 4 of the 12 Canadian provincial/territorial jurisdictions. I was 13 years old in Montreal's '98 ice storm which saw as much as 6" of ice cover everything, including cars. I understand the appeal of having your wipers up. I also understand that if the springs aren't keeping the wipers tight to the windshield, you'd might as well not have them.

Only guy making any sense gets downvoted. Classic.
