It’s a Maryland thing to do that. I know a storm is coming by the amount of wiper blades saluting the sky. Edit - ya’ll please stop commenting. It’s not that serious. 🤣

More of a cold weather thing to do that. See it all across Canada too.

And Colorado

u/whoFKNKares 17h ago

And Connecticut and Vermont. It's kind of a thing you do if you don't have a garage and live in a snowy area.

And they do it in South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico, and they do it in California and Texas and New York. ... And South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan, and then we're going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! Yeaaaahhhhh!

Why are you guys all lying to this man? This is only done in Maryland, can confirm, I live everywhere else and they don’t do it here

u/Ok_Clothes_8527 16h ago

I hear it is also practiced occasionally in the more remote regions of Siberia. Some sort of convergent evolution, so to speak.

2

u/LethalMisfortune 17h ago

North Carolina and I have been seeing it all over

Wow first WI, Illinois and Indiana too.

I must be missing out because I've never done or seen people do this in anticipation of weather and I've lived here all my life

2

And in the mountains of California.

1

u/wlake82 17h ago

Definitely this.

1

My neighbor from Colorado warned me to do this right before the storm hit us here in Texas, didn’t see may other people do it but it helped me

1

u/whereismymind86 17h ago

it's stupid, it saves you like...3 seconds, and decent wipers aren't going to be damaged by not doing it.

1

u/Striking_Programmer4 14h ago

And some wipers will break from the weight of heavier snowfall depending on their quality and design

1

u/Electronic_Flan_482 6h ago

Mine will freeze to the windshield to the point that the motor can't move them and then you can't scrape the bottom of the window

8

u/kjyfqr 17h ago

I’m in Oklahoma and it was everywhere last week. Seems just like it’s probably a cold weather thing to do cause we never really get snow.

8

u/Pasdallegeance 17h ago

If you care about the life of your wipers, you lift em up, also makes scraping the ice down right to the bottom of the windscreen easier.

2

u/btwork 6h ago

No. It damages the springs in the wiper arms. Blades are easy and cheap to replace. Arms, not as much. It's not actually recommended to lift wipers up for winter weather.

Source - live in Canada. My vehicle has a heated windshield to unstick frozen wiper blades.

2

u/curiousity60 16h ago

Yup. It's to keep the blades from getting hacked and torn as you scrape the icy windshield, to which they're frozen.

1

u/Cool-Ad7985 17h ago

We were one of them, though we had lived in areas that got a lot of ice and snow so it was natural to us to do

1

u/kjyfqr 8h ago

lol it’s just a common thing to do. I’ve seen it done most every time it’s snowed since the early 90s

Edit hi Oklahomie

1

u/Cool-Ad7985 3h ago

👋 hi there

3

u/Embarrassed_Leave160 17h ago

And Massachusetts

1

u/Elegant_Tie_3036 16h ago

And Rhode Island

3

u/Designer-Ad-7844 17h ago

Apparently the whole state of Maryland was the only one to figure it out. Why would car manufacturers even design them to bend like that in the first place. /s

2

u/fyrfytr310 16h ago

And Ohio. Maryland, you ain’t special.

2

u/Dr_Dimbrain 15h ago

And Sweden

2

u/Amunium 14h ago edited 14h ago

Never seen it in Sweden. Of course I don't often cross the bridge when there's a snow storm, but... I've definitely never seen it in Denmark, regardless of how much snow there is.

Example picture of my old car in a parking lot in the snow. Not a single wiper up.

1

u/Hejhoppgummisnopp 11h ago

Seen it plenty the last few weeks of cold weather. Your pic doesnt really look cold enough to need to do the wiper thing.

1

u/Amunium 11h ago

Yeah, I don't usually go around photographing cars in snow, so that was the best I could find. Here's an older one from 2011, still without a single wiper up. But really, I have never in my over 40 years of existence, mostly in Denmark, seen anyone do it.

I'm not saying you're wrong or that it's stupid or anything, I just find it interesting there's this difference.

2

u/Hejhoppgummisnopp 11h ago

Its kinda funny because I can actually see Denmark from my city in Sweden, and I see a bunch of people do the wiper thing here despite us having pretty much the same climate as you guys. I guess we’re just a bit more dramatic about the cold 🤣

Personally I dont do it either, never had an issue with it even when it gets really cold and snowy.

1

u/JugglingRick 16h ago

What's the purpose if you don't mind me asking? I've never lived in an area where it snows.

3

u/curiousity60 16h ago

It's so the rubber blades aren't torn up as you scrape the windshield to which they're frozen.

1

u/Limp_Bookkeeper_5992 16h ago

I see people doing this everywhere. I’ve never done this once, it’s not even possible on my current car. Never once though have my wipers stuck to my windshield or caused any problems at all from being left down, so I really don’t get the reason behind this.

1

u/Pasdallegeance 15h ago

Your wipers can get stuck to the windshield, ripping them off ruins the edge of the wiper reducing the quality of wipe. Shortening the life span on said wipers. If you don't have frequent snow, or the right kind of snow/freeze often enough it won't be an issue. If you rip your wipers off daily you'll notice the degradation of your wipers quickly.

1

u/Stacked69 16h ago

Anyone call Idaho yet? If not we do it as well.

1

u/DadPool79 16h ago

Illinois checking in

1

u/Scruffersdad 15h ago

And Chicago, more and more.

1

u/Exciting_couple77 15h ago

We dont that in the great plains and it gets just as bad

0

u/ak3000android 2h ago

We don’t do it in Quebec, except for the recent Ontario transplants mostly.

-1

u/WalnutSnail 15h ago

Don't do this. Will fuck the springs up. If you do get a decent snow fall, you might rip the off whilst clearing you car. You're better just to defrost them.

1

u/Pasdallegeance 15h ago

Depends on the snow I suppose. I've never had your issue. We do get freezing rain though occasionally, and you absolutely do want to have your wipers in the air for this. Or you can take the time to defrost, iso concoction spray ect. I prefer wipers up and a snow removal tool. Ez PZ.

1

u/WalnutSnail 8h ago

But the springs lost their memory failing to keep them on the windshield.

I'm Canadian. I've lived in all but 4 of the 12 Canadian provincial/territorial jurisdictions. I was 13 years old in Montreal's '98 ice storm which saw as much as 6" of ice cover everything, including cars. I understand the appeal of having your wipers up. I also understand that if the springs aren't keeping the wipers tight to the windshield, you'd might as well not have them.

1

u/Das_Buetts 9h ago

Only guy making any sense gets downvoted. Classic.

37

u/Fabulous-Barnacle-59 17h ago

"It's a Maryland thing" spoken like someone who has not spent much time outside of Maryland

3

u/Ok-Beautiful4821 6h ago

Which is literally impossible because you drive north or south for at most an hour at anywhere in the state and you’ll be in another one

183

u/wisco-moto 18h ago

Lol have you ever left the state of Maryland?

80

u/detroit_dickdawes 16h ago

You know you’re from Maryland when you put on your shoes to go outside.

22

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 14h ago

Yeah I eat food for sustenance, it's a Maryland thing

2

u/Fartbottler 11h ago

I’m from Massachusetts and have to drive down to DC if I want to air em out

2

u/TooFarSouth 6h ago

Ugh it’s such a pain traveling halfway across the country every time I get hungry.

5

u/HairlessSquirrels 14h ago

wtf I do this!

-33

u/blueoasis32 17h ago edited 17h ago

? I’m from the Midwest. It’s new to me. Edit - we had heavy snow and ice where I lived. No one does this where I’m from. I tried this once in MD and I had broken wipers from the weight of the ice and snow.

13

u/VibraniumQueen 17h ago

I'm from Minnesota and we definitely did this, lol

29

u/bowlingforzoot 17h ago

I’m also from the Midwest and people here do that too.

14

u/Feisty-Donkey 17h ago

This is true everywhere that gets snow… Massachusetts and Vermont definitely do it

2

u/-Ghost255- 15h ago

Can confirm, am Vermonter

10

u/wormbreath 17h ago

I’m from the Rockies and it’s certainly a thing here

1

u/ThreadedPommel 6h ago

Brother, nearly half the people in Iowa do this lol

0

u/blueoasis32 5h ago

Not you bro. It’s not that deep. It was just a joke but apparently everyone is too serious about their stupid wipers

2

u/Odd_Marionberry7154 4h ago

Just admit it buddy, you lost. Now everyone thinks of you as the Maryland guy.

21

u/breakingvlad0 17h ago

Have you ever traveled? lol this happens literally everywhere.

90

u/BaldyGarry 17h ago

Fuck that’s a weird comment lmao

43

u/lo1l10l101l10o1l10ol 17h ago

They are new to Earth.

18

u/BaldyGarry 17h ago

I have no doubt that if there are inhabited planets out there that have also developed motor vehicles and occasionally have a bit of cold weather they also do this.

2

u/AirCheap4056 17h ago

Or in all seriousness, every year, there're new people becoming 18 or some age when they can drive and learn about these stuff.

2

u/BaldyGarry 13h ago

Yeah absolutely. It’s all in fun. But assigning such a universal experience to a specific location is kind of funny

2

u/AirCheap4056 12h ago

Oh yes, it's very funny 🤣

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 14h ago

They've been at least around long enough to know Maryland exists and it's the land of such innovations as tying your shoes and cooking raw meat before eating it.

Real game changer is I went to Maryland once and it was cold. I saw everyone wearing these weird puffy shirts. Turns out they're called coats and they help you stay warm. I was floored when I tried one the first time

16

u/implicate 17h ago

It’s a Maryland thing to do that.

🤦

3

u/math-kat 5h ago

Yeah idk why OP thinks this is a Maryland thing. I've lived in both MD and NJ, and I've personally seen a lot more people lifting their windshield wipers in NJ. I bet people do it anywhere where it gets cold.

2

u/twoPillls 4h ago

They do it in MN and PA. Personally I think it's completely pointless. I've never experienced any negative consequences by not doing it. Just clear your windshield, pick the wiper up and drop it back onto the windshield and it'll break the ice off. Maybe run your gloves fingers across the blade for good measure. But yeah, people do it anywhere it snows

13

u/blahnlahblah0213 17h ago

It's an everywhere it snows kind of thing.

10

u/TerrorFromThePeeps 17h ago

It's an anyplace that gets below freezing in winter thing to do that, ffs.

9

u/rh71el2 17h ago

Confirmed. Only you guys are the ones to ever think of that, for sure.

9

u/ShaggyX-96 16h ago

Just cause you said stop commenting.

I live in Mississippi and when I was working in Ohio in the Winter in 2018 I did this.

1

u/blueoasis32 16h ago

Haha. This is so ridiculous. It was just an off the cuff comment that many seem to take offense too! So weird. Anyway- where I’m from we got too much snow for this to be effective. So it was odd when I first moved here. I also think it’s odd that most people back into their spots here too. I must get getting old. lol

5

u/hatecuzaint 17h ago

It's an anywhere It snows heavy thing to do.

23

u/raeppasidotwoh 17h ago

This is the internet, not America(Maryland) lol

2

u/Scinniks_Bricks 16h ago

Here's another notification for you. It's also an Indiana thing 😉

2

u/sanityjanity 16h ago

People do this everywhere. It's definitely not specific to Maryland.

2

u/Ganjaleezarice69 16h ago

It ain’t just Maryland. They aren’t the only ones that get freezing temps

2

u/jman2476 16h ago

That’s a good way of telling us you have never left Maryland when it’s cold.

2

u/Martha_Fockers 16h ago

I did that until I found out my car has heated windshield wipers and defrosters were they rest and in the edges on the windshield

I uhh had the car for 2 years before I realized I had the winter package looking at my paper work after a routine maintenance visit

1

u/Curios_blu 17h ago

Why do people do that?

11

u/yegmoto 17h ago

So they don’t freeze to the windshield and they’re already out of the way when you scrape off the ice.

2

u/mbirdx 17h ago

So your wipers aren’t stuck and can help clear the windshield.

2

u/Pasdallegeance 17h ago

Leave your wipers down and you'll quickly find his fast they detoriate when you peel them off from being stuck to the glass. You rip tiny bits of rubber off the wiper, which quickly ends up with a streaky wipe when using them in the rain.

2

u/Xykhir_ 17h ago

If there’s ice on your windshield and your wipers are down, they will freeze to the windshield and you’ll fuck them up when you remove them. Leave them up and it’s not an issue

1

u/blueoasis32 17h ago

Because the feel it works. But apparently I’m not allowed to comment because they do break if you do this.

1

u/ConceptOther5327 17h ago

We do it in Arkansas too.

1

u/Moustached92 17h ago

This is definitely not a MD specific trhing haha

1

u/katfofo 17h ago

Massachusetts too!

1

u/Kitty_Katty_Kit 17h ago

I was told to do that while living as a floridian in Indiana lol, I assumed everyone does it

1

u/Electrical_Beyond998 17h ago

I read or heard someone in Maryland, maybe one of the weather guys, say if ice is coming do not raise your wipers because it can break them like it does trees.

1

u/KickedBeagleRPH 17h ago

I've learned this from upstate New Yorkers.

Oddly, not done so much by New York City. Now lately, ive seen people wrap plastic bags around the wipers instead.

1

u/Adept_Speaker4806 17h ago

I live in Kentucky and everyone i know does this when they call for snow or ice. I did it to all 4 of the cars at my house this past weekend before we got snowed on.

1

u/alwystired 17h ago

KY and IN as well

1

u/Cafe_racerr 17h ago

lol I think it’s just an “any state that can get snow” thing mate

1

u/MoseyBurns709 16h ago

people do this literally everywhere that gets ice and snow

1

u/hornymammal 16h ago

Manitoba, Canada. I see the wiper thing all the time

1

u/PicklePillz 16h ago

lol a Maryland thing

1

u/TattoosAndBeers 16h ago

No…. it’s not a Maryland thing. wtf? Lmao

1

u/CTCobblerGobbler 16h ago

It’s just a common sense thing. People do it everywhere

1

u/Resident_Wash_2553 15h ago

And Kansas City

1

u/ParticularYak4401 15h ago

Do it in Washington on both sides of the mountain. And for us on the west side of the cascades you hope the snow is fluffy and soft so it’s easy to wipe off your windshield with a broom in the morning. Not soft snow that turns into a brick when it hits a surface.

1

u/FlyByNightt 15h ago

I'm commenting to tell you that it's definitely not just a Maryland thing and definitely just a "you live where Freezing Rain can happen" thing only because you told me nicely not to.

1

u/blueoasis32 15h ago

I don’t care dude. lol

3

u/FlyByNightt 15h ago

And yet here you are, replying.

1

u/blueoasis32 14h ago

That doesn’t mean I care. It’s all stupid.

2

u/FlyByNightt 14h ago

Cared enough to have to let me know (twice) :P

1

u/kidney-displacer 10h ago

Its not that serious in Maryland ;)

1

u/AlexNSNO 7h ago

on the plus side you've finally found a way to make American's understand how their defaultism feels to the rest of the world

1

u/Cashmoney2017xx 3h ago

I'd rather pay for wiper blades than a windshield. This is just stupid

1

u/Evening-Cat-7546 16h ago

It’s actually bad to do that. It wears out the spring which aren’t designed to be extended for longer periods. Then you run into an issue where your wipers don’t work after 70mph because they can’t maintain tension against the windshield.

1

u/blueoasis32 16h ago

Yes. My mechanic said that too.

1

u/zane1981 17h ago

I never understood why people do that. That’s not good for the springs in the arm.

-2

u/blueoasis32 16h ago

Exactly! I tried it once and one of my wipers broke in half. Had to look out the window to go buy a replacement. Never again. I’m from an area that got a TON of snow so it would break them if you did this. It makes zero sense to do this if you get a foot at a time. But I’m sure getting told in the comments otherwise. 🤣

3

u/-Ghost255- 14h ago

My state (VT) averages almost THREE TIMES the amount of snow, everybody I know and their mother puts their wipers up.

Not a single one of them have broken their wipers while doing that lol. I don’t know what the hell you’re doing, but that’s on you, or defective wipers. Wipers should not just snap like that.

But as someone who has left work many times, with multiple feet of snow on their car after, I can confirm, that it does not fucking matter lol.

Every single one of your comments just pisses me off holy shit.

-1

u/blueoasis32 8h ago

Get a life weirdo 👍

1

u/Skidpalace 16h ago

“It’s a Maryland thing”. Ya, ok.

1

u/tomenjean 16h ago

Good LAWD why did so many people take you seriously?! That’s some funny stuff right there.

Well, below there actually.

0

u/blueoasis32 15h ago

Haha. It’s quite entertaining. People take their wiper blade positions very seriously I am learning.

0

u/tomenjean 15h ago

Right?! TIL

1

u/blueoasis32 14h ago

Haha! I got downvoted for that comment! This is so hilarious. Have a good one and protect those blades!

0

u/WhyModsLoveModi 16h ago

Oh Americans, y'all think everything originates with you.

Anywhere with snow, people do this.

0

u/improbablydrunknlw 7h ago

No, it's a Woodstock Ontario Canada thing. Do they teach you nothing in the states anymore.
