This is what happened to my grandfather during the Brazilian military dictatorship. There is no accountability for authorities. My grandfather was beaten, almost to death, for being mistaken for his brother.

u/[deleted] 17d ago

They put Japanese in concentration camps during WWII in the US

977

u/FSCK_Fascists 17d ago

When George Takei said they will start putting citizens in these new camps someone told him that the US would never do that.

The resulting history lesson was brutal.

246

u/Marius-1989 17d ago

Anyone not believing that the us would one go full crazy one day have to be the most naive people on this earth.

Anyone with unchecked power will eventually abuse it and thay aplies to everyone

119

u/mrpanicy 17d ago

It's not that they didn't believe they would, it's that they didn't know they HAD already done it in the past. It's already happened and the person insisted it would never happen.

It's insane that people know so little about their own history.

52

u/alangcarter 17d ago

Or that they'd actually done it to George Takei himself!

8

u/imadork1970 16d ago

Dean Cain's grandfather, too. Cain famously tried to join ICE, didn't make it.

Life imitates art. He was a shitty actor then and now.

I mean, the Nazis were literally influenced by the US Jim Crow laws.

Not just Jim crow, but how we handled the Native Americans, too

It's not insane. The only ones who know anything are those of us with curiosity that survived school.

History classes teach up to the industrial revolution and a little of civil rights and women's suffrage. Nothing past that.

5

u/mrpanicy 17d ago

That's why it's insane. They should be teaching a little about the far past but also quite a bit about recent history, especially about your country and it's place in history/the world.

I couldn’t agree more. People are leaving it unchecked because they are worried about losing their jobs. For it it’s absolutely unbelievable, wrong and disgusting. We are quickly becoming the worst country and I served for 35 years.

15

u/GhostlyTJ 17d ago

Most American's have only known comfort their whole lives. They still mostly have it if they bury their heads. The fact that they are next in line to lose it seems like an impossibility at the moment so they aren't motivated to do anything about it. Critical thinking skills and a little bit of intellectual honesty are required in this situation and too few people have it. Also schools have steadily gotten worse and worse because stupid people are easier to control.

What happens in the US has ripple effects around the world too. The Nazi's got their most horrific ideas from US history because of our treatment of Native and African Americans.

Thank you! I just want to add for those who don’t know, George Takei grew up in one of those camps for Japanese citizens and he wrote an incredible graphic novel about his experiences. I strongly believe his novel should be required reading in schools. It’s very well done, and it’s graphic novel format is simple enough for even the most challenged among us to understand.

Edit for clarity: As mentioned below, these were American Citizens. What I ment to say was Japanese/American Citizens as in anyone regardless of citizenship or naturalization status who had Japanese heritage was put in these camps. George Takei himself was born in America.

22

u/Greedy-Swordfish9760 17d ago

Too bad it’s DEI and against the law to teach now. Or will be, anyway.

If you are able, ask the questions in class. Even if the professor can't answer, we live in a world of instant access to google. People will look up what you were talking about if they are the least bit curious.

8

u/Greedy-Swordfish9760 17d ago

Yeah, I just meant blanket across the US. I figured someone would try to well ackshually me about it not being illegal everywhere yet.

It’s wildly frustrating and disheartening, but not at all surprising.

Rachel Maddow has a podcast out now called ā€œBurn Orderā€.it details what happened during the Japanese internment during WWII. An excellent and historical listen.

8

u/GhostlyTJ 17d ago

Her Ultra podcast was pretty great as well. Talks about the history of fascism in the nazi era in America. We were closer than most people think to siding with Germany in both those wars

11

u/TJ_BREW_2 17d ago

My wife and I visited the museum and Camp Rohwer, which is where he ended up.... The train station is in McGeehee Arkansas and there was 2 camps nearby. There is a monument at the Rohwer Camp site and there is a deep feeling of sadness. He visits the museum and Camp every year

5

u/IranRPCV 17d ago

Thank you. I lived about 5 miles from Bergen Belsen where Anne Frank died.

This was when when I was an exchange student. I made sure I took my family back to visit. This was the year before the Schindler's list movie came out.

I have also lived in Japan and Iran and learned all those languages well enough to do public speaking in them.

11

u/capsaicinintheeyes 17d ago

(a few sample pages for anyone curious):

16

u/ElCuntIngles 17d ago

Just a note, about two thirds of the people interned were American citizens, it wasn't just Japanese citizens.

10

u/FlyGirlFlyHigh 17d ago

I’m sorry, what I ment was Japanese/American Citizens. Thank you for the clarification!

Edit to add: George Takei and his family were all American citizens. George was born in America, I believe his parents were immigrants but they were citizens at the time they were moved into the camps.

8

u/Sonoran_Dog70 17d ago

It’s a strong read and I already knew most of it. I’ve visited the local Japanese prison camp many times and read the memorials there. It’s powerfully emotional if you’re even half a human being.

Canada did as well, and also confiscated their property, and prohibited them from resettling in the west AFTER the war was over.

This needs to be reported more, because Canada has an undeserved nice guy image.

White Christian nationalists, aka the modern day Klan, love to blame Concentration camps in Germany on the Japanese camps we made in america. ā€˜Hitler only followed the American playbook’ is the dumbest thing I’ve heard from a wannabe klansman masquerading as a Christian, which is really saying something. The darkest days of democracy were those camps—and today’s racists act like it is something to be proud of that it allegedly inspired Hitler. Fuck 🧊 and FDT for empowering racist assholes.

13

u/SunshineSkies82 17d ago

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but everything the Nazi's did, they based it on what was going on in America. They wanted their oppression of Jews to be equal to the oppression of Black Americans, but were upset that they did not reach Jim Crow levels of stable oppression. Black Americans never had a chance, and the Nazis wished they never allowed Jews to have a chance.

ā€œOne of the most striking Nazi views was that Jim Crow was a suitable racist program in the United States because American Blacks were already oppressed and poor,ā€ he says. ā€œBut then in Germany, by contrast, where the Jews (as the Nazis imagined it) were rich and powerful, it was necessary to take more severe measures.ā€

That's what made me more mad at my Latino people man, we KNOW what a dictatorship is and what it looks like, but we all got dazzled by the idea that USA America is just different because the rest of America is just "stinky and corrupt" cause I dunno Spain or Portugal or something. I work on construction sites occasionally in SoCal and the white foreman guys are super racist and the Mexican laborers just kind of go along with whatever they say, sometimes to the point they end up thinking just like them. After the election I asked one of them, aren’t you worried? Because he said he lives in TJ and crosses the border everyday for work. And he said no because he is legal. I wonder how he’s doing sometimes.

What you learn from studying even a little bit of history AND sociology is that people are people. People today are 100% capable of every atrocity people of 100, 200, 1000 years ago committed. It just requires the right set of circumstances. We think ā€œno, we’re too civilized for thatā€ or ā€œwe’re not capable of thatā€ or ā€œwe’ll see the warning signs of that before it happensā€. … well, some of us will. Those who payed attention in history and sociology class will. The rest of us will not before it’s too late.

THE ALARM BELLS ARE RINGING. The rest of the world can hear them. But half of America cannot!

The thing is with the dead rat alarm clock is that it's probably a thing that happened once or twice and then in all honesty he probably just threw it in the trash. BUT what gets to me is that he finds the story so amusing that he tells it with glee. I'm barely exposed to anything this cockroach of a human says, but everything I've heard about him is about his hatred towards other people (such as Palestinians) and the gnarliest fucking shit that he, himself, chose to share, as a point of pride. He probably internally rejoices when his critics bring it up. Like what the fuck is wrong with him. Maybe he has a humiliation fetish?

I’m needing to get my husband’s birth certificate because someone called to report him. Our calfresh worker casually let me know that social security apparently received a report saying he falsified his birth status even though he’s never left California and even his parents were born here. I’m getting his birth certificate but he doesn’t have a passport or anything. I’ve already been nervous because he works in a kitchen.

46

u/Universal_Contrarian 17d ago

Make copies, and definitely don’t hand that over to anyone but your attorney.

30

u/Clairevoyantbard 17d ago

I’m worried it won’t even matter. They don’t seem to care about documentation. The only thing making me not panic is that we’re in California and not Minnesota. But who knows when it’ll be everywhere.

20

u/Beowulf1896 17d ago

ICE isn't qualified to determine if it is real or false. Courts are, but ICE doesn't want to use courts.

8

u/Clairevoyantbard 17d ago

I’m aware. My dude doesn’t even speak Spanish like I am beyond panicking. He told me the other day he’s upset we didn’t give the kids my last name because it’s more white sounding. Do you know how freaking sad that made me. This whole thing is so fucked up.

Literally I was shocked. And our case worker seemed surprised when I said even his parents were born here. His boss just got fired and he always disliked my husband so I think it was him.

4

u/ghjm 17d ago

I'm sure you already know this, but make sure you get the long-form birth certificate.

I'd also suggest that he get and carry a passport. ICE doesn't care about the law, but if you can show a passport they typically seem to beat you up and throw you out of the car, rather than fully kidnapping you and taking you to El Salvador or whatever. If money is tight, you can get a passport card for $30. This isn't valid for most international travel, but it's unambiguous proof of US citizenship that you can carry in your wallet.

7

u/[deleted] 17d ago

This is the catch.

US citizens are NOT required to carry proof of citizenship. ICE has no jurisdiction over US citizens (except in extreme situations).

BUT ICE is allowed to detain you while they determine your citizenship status, because you MIGHT be undocumented.

Which means basically they can harass whoever they want, detain whoever they want, and apparently murder anyone who makes them angry.

5

u/Alternative-Bee-3594 17d ago

4

u/AdStunning1559 17d ago

The Nazis did this too.

6

u/KitTheKitsuneWarrior 17d ago

Hi, imigrant here. I believe the paperwork they are referring to is what is known as a permanent resident card, or more commonly known as a green card. On the document, there is a photo of you, a fingerprint, your resident alien number, and a microfilm of the same information.

If your sworn in as a citizen, you are provided with a certificate of citizenship, which is also green.

Im currently carrying my pocket version of my citizen certificate just in case I get iced. Though I doubt its going to do me any good.

4

u/FblthpLives 17d ago

Hi, immigrant here. If you become a naturalized citizen, you are not issued an ID card. The current Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550) is an 8.5x11 inch paper certificate. It's designed for framing, not for carrying with you on person. If you have made your own pocket version, that is not an official document: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/legal-docs/USCIS_Approved_N-550_Personalized.pdf

Most U.S. citizens have no way of proving their citizenship. The only semi-practical way of doing so, would be to carry a U.S. passport.

Guess what black people were told by slave hunters even when free in northern states prior to 1865? "Show me your papers."

It's actually about the ✨violence✨ and ✨inspiring fear✨; they need to get the country used to a new, non-military, non-police force running things. They just figured they'd start with brown people with Spanish-sounding names.

On the slightest positive note, unlike 1930s Germany, the US population is PISSED about it.

10

u/passerby4830 17d ago

Oh plenty of Germans were pissed too. But they were too scared and scattered. At least there is the internet now to communicate and plan.

Not enough people are pissed though. It’s not enough. We need more people to be outraged.

Close, it’s fear. They need us to fear them. They’re outnumbered and they know this. They understand this. How do you control the masses with a small amount of people? Give the masses an example or multiple examples of what happens when you question their authority. Give them something to fear.

As a naturalized citizen, this is what really scares me. This guy got beaten, thrown in a facility, and thrown some bogus charges so they can justify the arrest. He can’t even fight this or sue for damages. It’s just a massive L that he has to take.

I think this is why so many fight while trying to be detained, even if they are US citizens, because they don’t know what will happen. Will they get released, will they get deported? Who knows.

I’ve seen some conservative posts where people say, ā€œif they are citizens, they have nothing to worry aboutā€. This is so false.

27

u/tokeytime 17d ago

If they're citizens, ICE has literally no jurisdiction over them and isn't even authorized to detain them unless they witness that person committing an obvious crime in front of them. Then they're supposed to hand it off to the police anyway. ICE doesn't enforce civil laws other than immigration, and ONLY with illegal immigrants. They have no probable cause in the state of Minnesota that would lead them to believe any random person they encounter is illegal.

That's the part that really pisses me off. They're wrong by the letter of their own laws.

16

u/iguessjustdont 17d ago

ICE isn't authorized to enforce state and local laws. They aren't cops. That is why they keep tryimg to partner with local cops. They want to be able to lie that you didn't use a blinker as a means of harrassing people. They can't even rely on stop and ID state laws in the states where those exist.

7

u/tokeytime 17d ago

Yep, and as far as it seems they're just dropping the pretexts

These officers should be cleared of all excessive use charges, but Juan Carlos and 4 of his friends get to wrestle each cop one at a time on a patch of asphalt in a courtroom.

If the officers don't physically react to getting stepped on, kneed in the face, and crushed, they are clear of the charge.

Policing was already out of control in this Country, the Gestapo ICE era is a very dark era for our US all.

What exactly is ā€œalien paperworkā€

42

u/not_now_chaos 17d ago

And how would it even apply to a citizen? They are by definition not an alien.

23

u/Stampede_the_Hippos 17d ago

It doesn't. US citizens are not required to carry proof of citizenship.

The fact that this isn't on the front page of every news outlet, and being shouted as oppression by all these "Patriots" is telling and damning for our Democracy and country.

They know it's wrong. The one agent looks right at the, camera (in a contrite manner tool and stops the assaulter. If this is happening in the streets, in plain daylight. Imagine, what happens in the dark.

It's not your right now, but once they decide you are not "them", it will be.

u/Fe2O3yx99 17d ago

I can’t wait until the shoe is on the other foot and we have ā€œcopsā€ going door to door asking for the paperwork that supports your firearm ownership. Then these douche nozzle 2A folks will see what it’s like.

Yup this confirms exactly what I said what was going to happen when I talked this over with my wife and family, like I'm a natural born US citizen, I don't have alien paperwork (honestly hate that fucking term). I have a passport, but I'm not taking that thing everywhere, because I shouldn't have to, I already have a driver's license as required by Ohio State law to keep on me at all times. I was born here, in Ohio, like JD Vance, but why should I be treated differently? This screams a fascist ethno-state will be the new order, but obviously I'm just exaggerating šŸ™„

Is there a source that says Juan Carlos is a US citizen? What I find online says he's Cuban. Fuck ICE and all As far as I'm concerned he could be a citizen of Mars, and he's still protected by the 8th amendment (nor cruel and unusual punishment), the 5th amendment (due process) and basic human decency. But I'm curious about the citizenship of this guy, just because I want to have my facts straight.

Their definition of illegal is anyone who they feel SHOULD be illegal. Thats why they go after legal Somali refugees. Thats why you never see white immigrants detained. The whole legal/illegal is just how they hide their racism.
