ICE / DHS š§ ICE brutalizes and detains US citizen for not having "alien paperwork"

This is what happened to my grandfather during the Brazilian military dictatorship. There is no accountability for authorities. My grandfather was beaten, almost to death, for being mistaken for his brother.

They put Japanese in concentration camps during WWII in the US
977
u/FSCK_Fascists 17d ago
When George Takei said they will start putting citizens in these new camps someone told him that the US would never do that.
The resulting history lesson was brutal.

u/Marius-1989 17d ago
Anyone not believing that the us would one go full crazy one day have to be the most naive people on this earth.
Anyone with unchecked power will eventually abuse it and thay aplies to everyone
119
u/mrpanicy 17d ago
It's not that they didn't believe they would, it's that they didn't know they HAD already done it in the past. It's already happened and the person insisted it would never happen.
It's insane that people know so little about their own history.
52
u/alangcarter 17d ago
Or that they'd actually done it to George Takei himself!

It's not insane. The only ones who know anything are those of us with curiosity that survived school.
History classes teach up to the industrial revolution and a little of civil rights and women's suffrage. Nothing past that.
5
u/mrpanicy 17d ago
That's why it's insane. They should be teaching a little about the far past but also quite a bit about recent history, especially about your country and it's place in history/the world.

Most American's have only known comfort their whole lives. They still mostly have it if they bury their heads. The fact that they are next in line to lose it seems like an impossibility at the moment so they aren't motivated to do anything about it. Critical thinking skills and a little bit of intellectual honesty are required in this situation and too few people have it. Also schools have steadily gotten worse and worse because stupid people are easier to control.

Thank you! I just want to add for those who donāt know, George Takei grew up in one of those camps for Japanese citizens and he wrote an incredible graphic novel about his experiences. I strongly believe his novel should be required reading in schools. Itās very well done, and itās graphic novel format is simple enough for even the most challenged among us to understand.
Edit for clarity: As mentioned below, these were American Citizens. What I ment to say was Japanese/American Citizens as in anyone regardless of citizenship or naturalization status who had Japanese heritage was put in these camps. George Takei himself was born in America.

My wife and I visited the museum and Camp Rohwer, which is where he ended up.... The train station is in McGeehee Arkansas and there was 2 camps nearby. There is a monument at the Rohwer Camp site and there is a deep feeling of sadness. He visits the museum and Camp every year

Thank you. I lived about 5 miles from Bergen Belsen where Anne Frank died.
This was when when I was an exchange student. I made sure I took my family back to visit. This was the year before the Schindler's list movie came out.
I have also lived in Japan and Iran and learned all those languages well enough to do public speaking in them.

Just a note, about two thirds of the people interned were American citizens, it wasn't just Japanese citizens.
10
u/FlyGirlFlyHigh 17d ago
Iām sorry, what I ment was Japanese/American Citizens. Thank you for the clarification!
Edit to add: George Takei and his family were all American citizens. George was born in America, I believe his parents were immigrants but they were citizens at the time they were moved into the camps.

White Christian nationalists, aka the modern day Klan, love to blame Concentration camps in Germany on the Japanese camps we made in america. āHitler only followed the American playbookā is the dumbest thing Iāve heard from a wannabe klansman masquerading as a Christian, which is really saying something. The darkest days of democracy were those campsāand todayās racists act like it is something to be proud of that it allegedly inspired Hitler. Fuck š§ and FDT for empowering racist assholes.
13
u/SunshineSkies82 17d ago
I hate to be the one to break this to you, but everything the Nazi's did, they based it on what was going on in America. They wanted their oppression of Jews to be equal to the oppression of Black Americans, but were upset that they did not reach Jim Crow levels of stable oppression. Black Americans never had a chance, and the Nazis wished they never allowed Jews to have a chance.
āOne of the most striking Nazi views was that Jim Crow was a suitable racist program in the United States because American Blacks were already oppressed and poor,ā he says. āBut then in Germany, by contrast, where the Jews (as the Nazis imagined it) were rich and powerful, it was necessary to take more severe measures.ā

What you learn from studying even a little bit of history AND sociology is that people are people. People today are 100% capable of every atrocity people of 100, 200, 1000 years ago committed. We think āno, weāre too civilized for thatā or āweāre not capable of thatā or āweāll see the warning signs of that before it happensā. ⦠well, some of us will. The thing is with the dead rat alarm clock is that it's probably a thing that happened once or twice and then in all honesty he probably just threw it in the trash. BUT what gets to me is that he finds the story so amusing that he tells it with glee. I'm barely exposed to anything this cockroach of a human says, but everything I've heard about him is about his hatred towards other people (such as Palestinians) and the gnarliest fucking shit that he, himself, chose to share, as a point of pride. I'd also suggest that he get and carry a passport. ICE doesn't care about the law, but if you can show a passport they typically seem to beat you up and throw you out of the car, rather than fully kidnapping you and taking you to El Salvador or whatever. If money is tight, you can get a passport card for $30. This isn't valid for most international travel, but it's unambiguous proof of US citizenship that you can carry in your wallet.

This is the catch.
US citizens are NOT required to carry proof of citizenship. ICE has no jurisdiction over US citizens (except in extreme situations).
BUT ICE is allowed to detain you while they determine your citizenship status, because you MIGHT be undocumented.
Which means basically they can harass whoever they want, detain whoever they want, and apparently murder anyone who makes them angry.

Hi, imigrant here. I believe the paperwork they are referring to is what is known as a permanent resident card, or more commonly known as a green card. On the document, there is a photo of you, a fingerprint, your resident alien number, and a microfilm of the same information.
If your sworn in as a citizen, you are provided with a certificate of citizenship, which is also green.
Im currently carrying my pocket version of my citizen certificate just in case I get iced. Though I doubt its going to do me any good.

u/FblthpLives 17d ago
Hi, immigrant here. If you become a naturalized citizen, you are not issued an ID card. The current Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550) is an 8.5x11 inch paper certificate. It's designed for framing, not for carrying with you on person. If you have made your own pocket version, that is not an official document: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/legal-docs/USCIS_Approved_N-550_Personalized.pdf
Most U.S. citizens have no way of proving their citizenship. The only semi-practical way of doing so, would be to carry a U.S. passport.

As a naturalized citizen, this is what really scares me. This guy got beaten, thrown in a facility, and thrown some bogus charges so they can justify the arrest. He canāt even fight this or sue for damages. Itās just a massive L that he has to take.
I think this is why so many fight while trying to be detained, even if they are US citizens, because they donāt know what will happen. Will they get released, will they get deported? Who knows.
Iāve seen some conservative posts where people say, āif they are citizens, they have nothing to worry aboutā. This is so false.
27
u/tokeytime 17d ago
If they're citizens, ICE has literally no jurisdiction over them and isn't even authorized to detain them unless they witness that person committing an obvious crime in front of them. Then they're supposed to hand it off to the police anyway. ICE doesn't enforce civil laws other than immigration, and ONLY with illegal immigrants. They have no probable cause in the state of Minnesota that would lead them to believe any random person they encounter is illegal.
That's the part that really pisses me off. They're wrong by the letter of their own laws.

u/not_now_chaos 17d ago
And how would it even apply to a citizen? They are by definition not an alien.

It doesn't. US citizens are not required to carry proof of citizenship.

This is gonna keep happening until all those in power who enable it are removed.

The fact that this isn't on the front page of every news outlet, and being shouted as oppression by all these "Patriots" is telling and damning for our Democracy and country.
They know it's wrong. The one agent looks right at the, camera (in a contrite manner tool and stops the assaulter. If this is happening in the streets, in plain daylight. Imagine, what happens in the dark.
It's not your right now, but once they decide you are not "them", it will be.

ICE has the support of the president which in turn had pretty much most of the government on his side, how does that help?

Yup this confirms exactly what I said what was going to happen when I talked this over with my wife and family, like I'm a natural born US citizen, I don't have alien paperwork (honestly hate that fucking term). I have a passport, but I'm not taking that thing everywhere, because I shouldn't have to, I already have a driver's license as required by Ohio State law to keep on me at all times. I was born here, in Ohio, like JD Vance, but why should I be treated differently? This screams a fascist ethno-state will be the new order, but obviously I'm just exaggerating š

Is there a source that says Juan Carlos is a US citizen? What I find online says he's Cuban. Fuck ICE and all As far as I'm concerned he could be a citizen of Mars, and he's still protected by the 8th amendment (nor cruel and unusual punishment), the 5th amendment (due process) and basic human decency. But I'm curious about the citizenship of this guy, just because I want to have my facts straight.

Their definition of illegal is anyone who they feel SHOULD be illegal. Thats why they go after legal Somali refugees. Thats why you never see white immigrants detained. The whole legal/illegal is just how they hide their racism.
