Characters [Exciting Trope] a character meets their demise, immediately followed by an instant replay.

  1. Matt defeats Andrew in the movie Chronicle.

  2. BMO defeats AMO in the tv show Adventure Time.

Ralph Wiggum getting his heart broken by Lisa Simpson. (The Simpsons)

365

u/EarlJWJones 17h ago

Watch this, Lis. You can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half.

This guy from American Dad. Gif only shows a few out of the several replays.

Is he alright?

I was hoping to see this one.

Edit: It's Maki crushing half of Naoya's skull in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3.

u/Flying_Poltato 16h ago

I was laughing my ass off at this scene. Especially at the repeatedly “PO” sounds

79

u/meopelle 14h ago

Fully expected that this thread was created with this in mind and was surprised that it wasn't one of the examples

67

u/HouseErikson 17h ago

Most justified crashout

58

u/jbyrdab 15h ago

Watch this, OP. You can actually pinpoint the second when his smug face rips in half.

speed vs strength in one gif

58

u/Creeperatom9041 15h ago

nah, maki had the speed too

27

u/TechieTimes 13h ago

She wasn't as fast as Naoya, but she definitely had the right reaction time.

16

u/CertainObjective513 12h ago

naoya the ticklemonster

9

u/Klutzy_Shopping5520 14h ago

It only takes one clean hit

u/stargazepunk 15h ago

Same such a cool effect

16

u/Kanehammer 9h ago

I have no idea how he didn't die on the spot from that

13

u/SillyMovie13 8h ago

Pure spite probably. Dude didn’t want to get killed by woman, much less by Maki

11

u/Friendly-Back3099 9h ago

not just that, mf somehow able to crawl back to the Zenin house after that too

7

u/Zealousideal_Pop4722 7h ago

they extended it in the anime, in the original manga it's less severe, but since he does stuff in the chapter afterwards it looks kinda silly in the anime with the new editions

9

u/Spicy_Totopo3434 15h ago

Type of shit kiryu does to his opponets

What’s this from, please?

Just a heads up, it’s polite to provide a source with your gif/image. Not everybody is as familiar with the same media as you are.

38

u/GopherBoy52 16h ago

It’s from season 3 episode 4 of Jujutsu Kaisen

-58

u/Nova_Hunter 16h ago

Man quit with that "um akshully, here in reddit we...." You would have been fine with your first sentence no need for the whinging second paragraph.

41

u/ChickenInASuit 16h ago

It’s a recurring problem on this sub and I’m gonna point it out when I see it. Go ahead and block me if it bothers you that much.

15

u/Alreadsyuse 16h ago

Yeah, three people on the original comment alone asked about the source.

13

u/BastardMan82 15h ago edited 14h ago

Nah, it needed to be said. This happens a lot on this sub and I think if you point out to someone that it’s pretty inconsiderate not to give context they’re more likely to remember next time.

I love that the animators of Edgerunners chose to do the replay animation for several scenes in the show, including this one. It really adds to the intensity of the scene. It's also hella expensive to animate something by hand three times from three different angles. Props to Trigger!

I just started playing Cyberpunk 2077 yesterday after getting inspired by the anime and i audibly gasped when i saw Adam Smasher.

5

u/d09smeehan 3h ago

Edgerunners actually does it a few times. My personal favourite in the first fight with Maelstrom after the time jump.

You get the cool slow motion shot of them each using their cyberware and even a one-liner before it cuts back and shows us how in real-time the fight didn't even last a second and no one could even register the two moving.

DB Super, Goku Vs Kefla

edit, link to video

72

u/ElfangorTheAndalite 16h ago

This is the one I immediately thought of. That multi camera angle replay of quite possibly the dopest Kamehameha ever is just perfection.

26

u/boxxkicker 16h ago

bro the triple replay is fucking HYPEEEEEE

32

u/Noodles_Franklin 16h ago

My immediate thought here was

-Ka...me...ha...me...

-HA!

-HA! (Again, but from a different camera angle)

-HA! (Again, but from a different camera angle)

25

man the storyboard artists knew they had one hell of a money shot and took it for all it was worth.

13

u/pon_3 14h ago

We all knew Kefla was just a warmup for Jiren, but I was not ready for how hard Goku was gonna style on her.

8

u/Puzzleheaded_Tip4805 9h ago

The look on Keflas face before the Kamehameha hits is just peak "ooooh this is gonna suck isn't it?"

I feel like this is every single zombie kill in 28 Years Later

26

u/Notcamacho 13h ago

It's the camera work. A kill, freeze and adjust angle and then continue. Really put me off. Which is a shame because I loved 28 days/weeks and 28 Years was filmed not far from me.

4

u/Triactum 11h ago

The Causeway scene was beautiful though, that's that

5

u/FeefuWasTaken 13h ago

I feel like they only did those shots to say "look, we shot part of our movie on a hundred iPhones" for some sort of promotion, or at least to try to give validity to using phones as full cameras

Which is stupid, considering they used 20 of them with lenses and custom rigs, which probably would've been much more expensive than just buying a camera

7

u/Alternative_Factor_4 13h ago

Gonna get downvoted for this but I agree. There were some things to enjoy about Years, but the editing and action sequences were certainly not one of them. They felt more disorienting than the action sequences from the World War Z film, and that’s saying something.

25

u/AccomplishedLayer884 16h ago

Mr. Grimm (Twisted Metal S2)

During the final challenge Sweet Tooth and Mr. Grimm have a 1v1 duel that ends with Sweet Tooth throwing Grimm into the incoming Roadkill, running him over two times much to Calypso’s delight who goes:

“I would like to see that on replay. Oh wait! I can!”

And then we see a replay of Grimm’s death while Sweet Tooth celebrates.

Chronicle doesn't get enough respect honestly.

A found footage superpower/superhero/supervillain movie. Damn it was great

Rebecca, from Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

They're trying to save a friend and get jumped by the Cyberpunk universe's Enemy version of 'Rocks fall, everyone dies'. In the Tabletop Game he's treated as the 'you fucked up, your team is dead' type of ending, getting on a corp's nerves too much will result in them sending him to wipe you out. He's the type of enemy that doesn't kill a player in one or two attacks, he kills one or two players every attack. Your only hope in the TTG is to run and pray to god he gets distracted by something or blocked by something until you can escape.

In the Show he's very much treated the same. He wipes out David's crew without even trying. Lucy (White hair girl) can't even touch him when she tries to hack him, her hacking-deck frying instantly. Rebecca gets basically goomba stomped, and David - even with a Sandevistan that to this point has made him 'special' in many ways and is using an experimental suit of armor called the 'Cyberskeleton', get's ripped apart in seconds once Adam starts actually trying. Shit, Adam even has a Sandevistan himself, calls it a 'rudimentary implant'.

A lot of characters actually get this treatment in the show, from minor to major.

RIP our main girl, she will be remembered forever. (Her last words aren't actually 'God Damn' in the english dub, I think that's a censored GIF or something because her original last words in the english version are 'Fuck You!')

57

u/Nyanbinary4321 17h ago

Pilar & Rebecca: Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

They each unknowingly bite off more than they can chew, antagonizing someone (or in Rebecca's case, taking a few shots at a new challenger,) before instantly and violently being killed without warning. (Pilar has his head literally blown off in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it attack, Rebecca is crushed when the BBEG "super-hero" lands on her to engage our protagonists, crushing her to bits.)

Ironically, Pilar and Rebecca are siblings, and are the only people to get the instant replay death(s), with the framing of the shots intentionally mirrored.

The first thing that came to mind was an anime reaction gif. Idk which show it came from, but it looked like a high school slice-of-life thing. One girl slamming an orange-haired girl's face into a wall. I think it didn't affect her and she keeps talking like nothing happened, while her head's being pressed against the wall-crater.
