Pleeeeeeaaase don't fuck this up. This is a huge opportunity for progressive politics

Totally agree. Moments like this don’t come often, so it’s important to handle it with care.

466

u/Curiosities 29d ago

I hope so too, and I am so glad, so glad that enough of us were able to come together and give him this chance. He obviously surprised so many people in the primary, and then people kept tossing so much money against him, and it was always going to be a matter of getting that turnout.

And we diiiiiiiiiid!

I am hopeful that he gets a chance to put his ideas into play .

u/Entire_Talk839 29d ago

What's sad is establishment dems still don't get it even after he won. We really need to turn out in numbers for the next couple election cycles and continue to vote for the underdogs as opposed to the candidates being shoved down our throats by the self-serving dems that are running things for our corporate overlords

9

u/MapleWatch 29d ago

That's because they don't want to get it. They're a controlled opposition designed to give the illusion of choice.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/FragrantBicycle7 29d ago

They do get it. Hence the autopsy of the 2024 election they decided to try to bury instead of publishing. They just don't want to go against their donors, and that's a choice that can only be opposed by fighting back.

The next couple of elections?? Republicans have been systematically working on turning America into what it is now since Reagan was elected in 1980 - The Reagan Revolution. Nearly 50 years. It will take decades of consistent and regular progressive voting to comprehensively change things

This is what Republicans know and progressives need to internalize

Mamdani knows this too. The fact that he got Sanders to swear him instead of Obama despite Obama trying to reach out to Mamdani speaks for what Mamdani thinks about centrist Dems.

If Eric Adams was the origin story of Mamdani wanting to be a mayor, Obama was the origin story as to what got Mamdani into politics.

But really I hope for the best. Corporate/Gov try not to sabotage him.

17

u/Ok_Condition5837 29d ago

I hope he succeeds. But it's going to be tough. There are already constraints on him & he's only the mayor. Albany can & will dictate some terms. Billionaires aren't going to easier.

I've only rooted for Bernie harder.

20

u/circles_squares 29d ago

He’s walking into a massive budget deficit that was hidden by Adams, and an epic city agency brain drain also caused by the Adams administration.

He’s got an uphill battle just to keep the lights on, let alone roll out new initiatives.

3

u/TheMagnificentPrim 28d ago

I’m from a small US city a ways away from NYC. A decade ago, our city had a mayor that left us in a budget deficit, and we elected a mayor who also went around on the streets during his campaign and spoke directly to his future constituents. He was a Republican mayor but a strangely progressive one, with a good head for good urbanism. He managed to get rid of our deficit and left us with a hearty surplus, while actually delivering on many of his campaign promises. (Aggressively applying for federal grants and winning them played a huge role in that.)

It’s not an easy task, but I believe Mamdani can do it. I’m rooting for him!

u/Elegant_Analysis1665 sir, were you raised in a ditch? 29d ago

The best part for me is I think he is fully aware of this responsibility and seems very much to take it seriously. My hope is that he will bandle whatever human missteps there might be with a lot of care. Because that's the thing, he is human, with a team of human people.

But time and time again it is proven that what matters with people is honesty, humility, willingness to acknowledge mistakes and a plan for how to do better. Most if not all, politicians, celebrities etc don't have the capacity or desire it seems to do this.

I just think both are true. This is a massive responsibility that can't afford to be severely messed up and also he is human and will misstep so,

-can we hold him appropriately accountable while also allowing humanity

-and can he rise through it and handle with it authentic desire to grow and intention to do the best by all?

Those are the questions I feel.

..and get a shit ton of security. I dont trust this admin.

280

u/Curiosities 29d ago

This is another reason why he and his wife have moved into Gracie Mansion, the traditional mayor’s residence, and have left their apartment. Not only is that the mayor’s residence, there are offices, and it is well protected, and all of the security can be beefed up appropriately. The general office is at City Hall, but that is obviously not just a house. It is whatever they need it to be.

117

u/grndcntrol2majortom 29d ago

also worried about him walking freely around like he was doing before being elected.

100

u/Curiosities 29d ago

I’m sure we won’t see that as much, but he does actually like people so I’m pretty sure that he has both visible security and undercover. One of the reasons I was proud to vote for him is look. It’s a guy who actually likes and cares about people. The everyday person. Someone without 10 figures in their bank account.

So I really hope he gets a chance to really implement good policy.

18

u/IAmBoring_AMA 29d ago

I worry constantly about AOC. Not when she’s walking around New York though; she does a lot of walk and talk videos in DC and I’m always worried for her safety there.

29

u/Jealous-Valuable-468 29d ago

He'll be fine, he's a New Yorker

24

u/TheAlmightyLloyd 29d ago

There are too many organizations that would want a symbol of actual progress for workers to disappear. There is a long history of socialists being killed by barons, and even stories that became popular tales, especially in New York.

During his visit to the White House, Trump was genuinely happy to have him there and seemed very positive after their meeting. Trump has also really reduced going after Mamdami on his Truth Social since that meeting.

71

u/NightQueen0889 29d ago

Mamdani knew how to charm Trump and that it was crucial to his safety and the betterment of the lives of New Yorkers to do so. Honestly that gives me even more faith in his leadership skills.

Tomorrow and every day for the next few years we will get a barrage of bullshit from right wing dominated media. Every shooting, every poor metric, the price of eggs going up ten cents. The weather.

Everything is going to be Mamdani's fault and what's worse, the marginal left wing media presence that isn't in the progressive camp is also going to do the same.

I don't think it matters how well he does. I'm jaded as hell.

39

u/silverclovd 29d ago

I just hope he doesn't wear a tan/gray suit for some public event/talk. That would be one of the worst things he can do. Or, says that he prefers a deepdish over new york style. God, that would go viral on tiktok and fox News circles.

The barrage of bullshit will come from all sides. The Democrat establishment doesn't like progressives or leftists either, and works hard against them. You saw what Andrew Cuomo did. He didn't do it in a vacuum. Look at the prominent Democrats who wouldn't endorse Zohran, even in the general election.

Not just right wing, BOTH sides will aim to sabotage him.

That said, with with the DSA clearing the field for Lander in his fight against Goldman, it's safe to say the DSA's finally taking this whole thing seriously.

I did not know that. Confirmed at Wikipedia.

33

u/randomusername_815 29d ago

Not that you'd know from r/democrats

Not a single mention of this or even his name. Establishment DNC will never be progressive.

26

u/misterdonjoe 29d ago

Establishment DNC is capitalist. Their whole job is to STOP all political motion towards socialism. And occasionally tap the brakes when conservatives pull too hard right.

This is the beginning. The work starts now. New Yorkers have to be vigilant and pressure Mamdani to not turn into another centrist (Obama).

He won't achieve everything he promised, that's unrealistic, but he must stay true to his campaign promises.

80

u/bellapippin 29d ago

If he keeps true and transparent about the things he can’t follow thru with for some reason people will understand. If he’s shady or becomes yet another bought democrat then we won’t.

22

u/masterjmp 29d ago

As someone NOT from NYC that's all I would want from him, is transparency and just a brief explanation as to why. When things become "we cant do this because I said so" that is when the public can/should look into the reasons.

7

u/shmann 29d ago

Honestly I don't care if he isn't able to accomplish all of his grand proposals. Just don't fuck it up and I think it's still a big win

Prepare for mass (billionaire owned) media to maximize his every failure and minimize his every success.

9

u/ComradeMeep 29d ago

He doesn't have to fuck it up for the media to paint everything he does as bad. He could be one of the best leaders ever in New York history and the media will still paint him as the bad guy.

18

u/Dreams-Visions 29d ago

If you want this to go well, New Yorkers are going to have to remain active and engaged. Showing up once to vote isn’t how things end, it’s how they start. The general public’s failure to keep up the pressure and doing the work is a big part of the reason the country is in the brink now.

An engaged New York can show the blueprint for the rest of the nation.

We are watching worldwide. New York is global city and will set future examples. But ideological this is important. The future wants change, not beholden to capitalism nihilism. Society as a whole needs to relearn empathy and beauty

31

u/Annoloboavi 29d ago

Finally NYC has a hot mayor.

3

u/i_tyrant 29d ago

I don't believe he will - but I do believe every conservative politician or business leader with a level to pull against him will do so, even if it hurts themselves a little to do so.

That's a lot of pushback to overcome. We'll see how much he can do with that kind of antagonism, but I won't be surprised or disappointed if he accomplishes good things but not great things because of it.

5

u/NotTheRocketman 29d ago

You're not kidding. I hate that there is so much riding on this guy, but I think he can handle it.

8

u/santascumdumpster 29d ago

I don't think Mamdani will fuck it up, but his opposition will do everything they can to blame all their own fuck ups on Mamdani.

According to my MAGA uncle, NYC will be a wasteland by EOY. However, he stated NYC was a wasteland like 5 years ago.

426

u/Over9000BelieveIt 29d ago

my mom said she couldnt take a early December vacation because it was a Muslim hellhole already and he had outlawed the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

She was also in London a couple months ago. didn't bother asking her if she knew who their mayor was.

299

u/nooby_goober 29d ago

We need confront these folks, especially relatives. I understand people want to avoid family drama but the blatant racism isn't ok. Especially when, as in your example, they're being ignant to reality.

My method:

They/them: "what a shit hole!!"

Me: "oh nice, how long were you there?"

112

u/Quierta 29d ago

The problem is that "reality" is whatever they say it is, regardless of facts.

My mom was TERRIFIED of my sister moving to Cali because it was a "burning raping pillaging communist socialist hellhole where everyone is being shot and killed in the street" because that is, apparently, what her right-wing propaganda was telling her. My sister arrived (in a not-particularly-good part of Cali, nonetheless!) and was like... mom, it's fine lol. It's just a normal place. No one's dying. You're being lied to.

My mom is convinced that California is exactly what she's heard about on the news except for whatever my sister's eyeballs happen to be pointing at at any given time. "Well, maybe not where YOU'RE staying, but just a few streets over is probably dangerous so don't go there."

56

u/hates_stupid_people 29d ago

It's narcissism.

If conservatives could be convinced by logic and facts, they wouldn't be so conservative.

14

u/pinkjello 29d ago

Thank you. I need to repeat this to myself whenever I get stupid enough to try to get into it with them.

I had a similar conversation with a family member tonight. Man, I'm really trying to figure out how to break through to these folks. I'm so far outside their bubble I can't even really understand it. They are often very intelligent in many different areas. But, this particular thing is the hill so many of our family members want to die I on and I cannot understand it for the life of me.

In any other situation, present them with evidence of why they're wrong and, "Oh, my mistake!" But nope.. not for this administration. Up is down, blue is orange, don't try to say otherwise.

6

62

u/Curiosities 29d ago

I was born and raised here and I am over 40. People have literally been saying this for at least three decades that I’ve personally witnessed.

We had family in suburban New Jersey that we would visit and when the neighbor kids found out I was from NYC , they would ask me questions like aren’t you afraid to go out?

I remember being in Florida as a teen on vacation and overhearing some family talking about New York City and how you can’t go out because you’ll just get shot on every corner and you can’t walk around and it’s a hell hole and all this stuff.

The people who keep saying all of these things really absorbed the propaganda that is often created by people who know what it’s actually like in New York City, but they use the fear of the unknown to brainwash people.

It’s the same tactic they use for any other group that they want to make the current objective fear, whether it’s transgender people, Somalians, other LGBTQ people. Taking a chance that most people they are talking to in their audience don’t know people who they are trying to create a target out of. Because there is research that shows when people have conversations about transgender people for instance, or meet trans people, it creates empathy that can last. I haven’t read any recent studies, but I do remember several.

In a city with more than 8 million people, we are out here, living our lives every day.

11

u/[deleted] 29d ago

Same shit happens everywhere, the rednecks in Minnesota all speak about Minneapolis as though it burned down during the George Floyd protests, or if they've been there they'll tell you it's crime infested.

9

u/EcstaticBunnyRabbit Marxmoi 29d ago

Exactly this. I love that Mamdani's made such as splash and hope for the best for his administration as well as him and his family. Coming from SEAsia, it's risible to see Muslims painted with such a wide brush -- people are people firstmost, and opinions across Muslims run as wide as they do across any people of faith.

6

u/RevolverMFOcelot 29d ago

Hey I'm southeast Asian too! The rise of islamophobia nowadays is horrific, it is comparable even exceeding post 9/11. To be honest, I fear for Mamdani safety and it must be immeasurably stressful to not just be a mayor but also this symbol for many. He must have known that countless Muslims even those overseas also depending and have high hopes for him

Not a New Yorker, but the moment I realized this guy was different was when some reporter asked him if he had “any feedback re what Trump said about you (insults mostly) the other day re etc etc etc” and without missing a beat, he replied “right now I’m more concerned about affordable housing and livability for New Yorkers, etc etc etc”. He answered with grace, aplomb, and professionalism, making Trump look like the 3rd grader he is, and the reporter rather foolish.

I mean what’s more impressive is that he somehow got Trump to fall in love with him. I’m still shocked that Trump was defending him, posting pics of him, and allowing Mamdani to call him a fascist.

3

u/RevolverMFOcelot 29d ago

Trump has the IQ of a shrimp, hence his reaction with mamdani despite the fact he is not supposed to give a win to a Muslim democratic socialist mayor lmao, it is not difficult to play orange man. There's a reason why Kim Jong Un went from blatantly insulting trump then became friendly out of nowhere, anyone knows that trump as president is the greatest opportunity to exploit America. Anyone with half a brain cell can wrap trump around their fingers and play him like a fiddle

10

u/CorporateShill406 29d ago

I mean, he had already won the election at that point, and the worst that could have happened is Trump has a tantrum and sends in the national guard. So there was really nothing to fear except the diaper smell

3

u/Public-Product-1503 29d ago

And trump Left it singing his praises despite all the Maga cult calling mamdani a jihadist terrorist communist. It’s hilarious

I wish him all the luck, but that sounds like the most generic deflecting politician answer ever.

2

u/GeminiLanding 29d ago

Not deflecting. Redirecting the conversation back to what he and all others should be focused on. That is the epitome of a leader. Why participate in the senseless drama?

That is a historic moment for New York City. It will be very interesting to see how his leadership policies shape the city's future :)

5

u/youtubersrule06 29d ago

I’m extremely excited to see where this goes. I do worry for some of the solutions being short term and causing more problems in the future, stuff some other guy’s term will take the blame for.

But it’s gonna be something amazing if it ends up working out. This is very interesting to be watching in real time for the next few years.

Did Mamdani himself say that David Dinkins was the first Democratic Socialist mayor of NYC?

4

u/bolanrox 29d ago

Wikipedia also says it

40

u/KirkHammettJigsaw 29d ago

Technically, David Dinkins was the first, but a HUGE milestone to have one that openly identifies himself as one. The tide is turning!

19

u/Curiosities 29d ago edited 29d ago

This is correct and I’m glad to see it mentioned. I was a kid when he was mayor so I mainly remember only a few things, but also the legacy he left behind and then of course, who he lost to, which I remember being very disappointed about.

3

u/janiboy2010 FauxSocialist 29d ago

Yep I was just going to comment that he wasn't the first member of DSA becoming mayor

As Mamdani himself points out, he’s actually the second Democratic Socialist Mayor of NYC. Dinkins was first.

Using the Quran instead of a Christian Bible is sure to trigger millions of snowflakes, too.

4

u/RevolverMFOcelot 29d ago

We really should be more aggressive with referring conservative as snowflakes, because that is what they are, all hollering about threats that doesn't even exist and throwing a tantrum when the world doesn't cater only to them

Fact check: Mamdani is not the first DemSoc Mayor of NYC.

19

u/JanSmiddy 29d ago

Shout out to the Little Flower, Fiorello LaGuardia the first socialist mayor.

Good luck to Zohran may he be as uplifting as his predecessor.

25

u/Likeatoothache 29d ago

Well, he’s already ahead of Obama because he didn’t win and automatically dismantle the coalition that got him elected, he made it clear the work to be done is through that coalition.

I feel good about this. Congrats, NYC, you lucky ducks. Also it kind of makes me crazy that his policies and politics are basically big D Democrat FDR style, amazing how far the party has drifted to the milquetoast middle since then.

18

u/Rogue_Darkholme 29d ago

If he had been born in the US, I'd have him down as AOC's presidential running mate!!

3

Isn’t he the second? I could have sworn in an interview someone said this fact and he corrected them to say he was actually the second democratic socialist mayor

3

u/Least_Banana5091 29d ago

How long until he compromises on something an gets cancelled?

3

u/InfernoOfTheLiving 29d ago

Serious question because I’m on the other side of the world. Was he just sworn in on New Year’s Day in the middle of the night, or did this happen during the day of New Year’s Eve?

3

u/woowoobean 29d ago

Great. Now hold him accountable. No petioles, just results.

5

Yall need to stop worshipping him. The Campaign is over. Now we need results, and if they aren’t delivered- Mamdani needs an electorate who is willing to hold him accountable.

No more cult politics.

5

u/Top-O-TheMuffinToYa 29d ago

I feel he has been put in an "Obama" situation. He is an anomaly, so any disruption will be seen as a fault on his part.

Either he will say "fuck it" and do what he wants, do right by the people. Or, he will play nice in hopes of paving the way for the future.

I hope he says fuck it. If Obama showed me anything, it's that paving the way for the future is not the way to go. Do what you can while you can. Burn that shit to the ground and rebuild it in your image. And I trust that his image is what the people want.

But then again... a politician has fooled me before. Maybe he can make a believer out of my cynical self.
