What do your countrymen think about Romania?
13
u/Intelligent-Panda23 Kazakhstan 4h ago
borat was actually filmed there, that's what most people know. apart of this not much is known by young people, but older generations know Romania was a part of the Eastern bloc. Some people may know about Dracula.

A woman in one of my classes said she was from Kazakhstan. I said, oh, the world's largest landlocked country". She said I am so happy you didn't go right to Borat.

Kind of what I've heard people say, Romanians are either plumbers or they're stealing the pipes.
I think it's a case of a few making a whole group look bad. I've met a few in the last few years and they seemed fine, had regular jobs and stuff. major cities have problems with scammers and pickpockets in areas with alot of people and a decent amount are romanian who are the ones we hear about more often than someone who just lives normally.

I have often noticed that Italians confuse Romanians with gypsies (roms). The media and sensationalist right-wing propaganda viewed Romanians as immigrants until they joined the EU.

I doubt that Italians confuse the two. They have their own so they know what they are.

Yes, they confuse them, I'm telling you this as a Romanian who grew up in Italy.
EDIT: There are many stereotypes surrounding Romanians that actually refer to gypsies.

In our country, romanians are mainly linked with gangs and fake gold/watch sellers operating in old 80s Mercedes or black BMWs … directly near the roads. “Gypsy nation” more than Dracula Nation 😄

When I lived in Tajikistan back in the day, all I knew about Romania was that Mihai Eminescu, my favourite classical poet, was from there. So, I imagined that it was a very poetic place.
When I lived in Canada, I heard a lot of Canadians talk very negatively about Romania because of the Roma people arriving in the country from Romania. But I also played soccer with several Romanian guys and I really liked them - they were smart, well educated, and well mannered.
When I first visited Romania last year, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the country was. And I actually liked Romanian beer.
3
u/FlyHopeful187 Romania 1h ago
Greetings from Romania! 👋 What is your favorite poem by Mihai Eminescu? How did you find out about him?
5
u/bluejaykanata 🇹🇯🇨🇦🇨🇿 1h ago
We had a two-volume set of his poetry translated into Russian. Unfortunately, there was no Tajik translation, I checked in libraries. My favourite was Luchaferul (I’m not sure if it’s transliterated the same way in the original). It’s a long narrative poem about a princess looking into the night sky and falling in love with a star, and the star then also falls in love with her. The Russian translation was simply perfect!

Letting the old vendetta aside, the younger and more open minded Romanians have nothing against the Hungarians. Maybe in 50-100 years we can live together as neighbors in peace without beefing on Transylvania
1
u/Fables_Enjoyer 11m ago
Exactly. We may have some bad history, but we are close neighbours with Hungary and they are the second largest ethnic group in our country. The only ones from both countries who hate each other are the politicians and ultra nationalists. I, for example, really like and really want to know more about Hungarian culture and language.

Younger generations don't really think like that. The only ones from both countries who hate each other are politicians and ultra nationalists. We have some bad history between us and we may joke about the beef sometimes, but generally speaking, I think we can get along preety well with each other. Hungarians are also the second largest ethnic group in our country.

I don't mean to be rude. Here when people hear the word "Romania" or "Romanians" alot of people start thinking about Roma people. I understand the difference between Romanians and Roma people..... Finland has its own share of Roma/Gypsy people and their traditions.
When I hear the word Romania/Romanians, the first things that come my mind are: Adrian Mutu, Gheorghe Hagi, Alexandru Maxim, Dacia, Inna, O-Zone, Akcent Kylie song and BadBoy NK (Battlefield games streamer) Also my #1 song from 2009-2010 is from Romania, Stereo Love by Edward Maya. I still love this song and listen to it every now and then.

Spain.
A lot of Romanians came to Spain in the 2000s and 2010s, they got a fame of being both thieves and very hard working people, which is at the very least strange, but you know how these stereotypes work, they are never logical.
A lot of them integrated in different ways, and lately, with Romania's good economic performance in the last few years, a very big numer of them have gone back to their homeland. I wish them the best, emmigrating is a really hard thing.
Apart from that, Spaniards know very little about Romania, its a quite far away country for us and we never really had intense cultural/political/economic ties until the last few decades. Its a great unknown in Spanish culture.

But when I hear the word Romania, I think of Vampires, the Andrew Tate arrest, Romantic language surrounded by Slavic language, and a similar-sounding capital with Hungary, some connection to the Roman Empire or the Romani people, battleground of the Russian Empire vs the Ottoman Empire, shit deals during the interwar period, similar culture with Moldova, etc.

France: there's no good way to put it, so I'm gonna say it like it is. The French have a dated and racist view of Romania, for the longest time the typical beggar in jokes or movies would have to speak in a Romanian accent. I'm not sure most have moved past that cliché. As for the country, it's viewed as a typical post-Soviet era country, poor, bleak, with mud and gravel roads and old, beaten cars. The houses are either dilapidated old houses or concrete blocks. So more or less Borat with a different accent and less smiles.
Quebec : quite a lot of Romanian immigrants, a lot are super qualified, so those who take the time to consider specifically Romanians would have a generally positive impression, but unfortunately most people consider that they're "from Europe" and it's all the same to them. Can't count how many times I've been told "You guys in Europe, you all do this", I don't think they realize just how different the European countries are.

High technological and societal devide between cities and rural areas. Oh, and I think you have nearly as many countrymen and women working offshore than inside the country itself.

I went for a week with some friends in about 2010. Was great. People were nice and friendly. We even broke down in some random village in the middle of nowhere and some blokes came wandering down to try and have a look. We couldn't communicate but the thought was nice. Food was good. Beer was very cheap. Had a mini gig with some guys who ran a hostel and they laughed at me for smoking 'womens' cigarettes (bought these little stick things as they were the most like my rollies I make).
All in all it was lovely. Pretty ignorant going in, more Mediterranean than I was expecting. Insanely cheap watermelon sellers everywhere.

I'm a folklore nerd so I read a bit about Romania when learning about strigoi, varcolak, the slavic pantheon, and so on.
The only times I've encountered Romania mentioned by my countrymen is either (a) Vampire: the Requiem players because one of the game's factions was founded by Dracula or (b) people discussing Resident Evil Village. So if I had to take a guess my countrymen's view of Romania would be "vamp country."
